As a client of Smart Strength for over 6 years I can’t recommend them enough. As I pushed past the age of 40 my motivation for strength training, and really all exercise had waned, and finding Smart Strength at 45 was the solution. The rationale of maintaining muscle mass to increase ability, and lessen the impact of daily life has more than proven out for me over my time with Smart Strength. Anecdotally, this past year I underwent a hip replacement surgery that was necessary due to severe arthritis damage resulting from a previous injury. Smart Strength adjusted my workouts in advance to (I might be inventing a new word here) “pre-habilitating” me for the surgery. Truth be told Smart Strength had tailored my workouts for at least 2 years prior to my diagnosis, and drastically minimized the pain associated with my hip. So much so that when I finally went in for diagnosis, the surgeon was amazed I was able to walk. Inevitably my surgery was a huge success, my recovery time was basically non-existent, and my only need for a walker was to get into the house upon my return home the hospital the following day. I was prescribed 8 weeks of physical therapy, but after only 2 sessions I was discharged for surpassing all of the goals, and I give 100% credit to Smart Strength for that. Start Strength is not a CrossFit routine that will consume hours of your week pouring out sweat over meaningless exercises meant to make every woman look like Wonder Woman, and every man look like Superman. It will make you functionally stronger than you’ve probably ever been, substantially decrease recovery times, give you more energy, and more ability with very little impact to your time.

His vast knowledge and many years of experience have helped me gain muscle strength and flexibility as I age. With almost a year of consistent Smart Strength training completed, I have seen a noticeable change in my upper and lower body strength. Renewed strength which supports day to day tasks such as lifting and carrying, and new found strength which supports and enhances my performance in physical activities such as hiking and yoga. Skyler and his team have been keeping me free from injury and vigorously fit for over 8 years in a way that has prevented occupational injury by maintaining a healthy cervical spine with no issues at all since starting my strength training with Smart Strength. Prior to training with Smart Strength, I would suffer intermittent work-related cervical spine and back issues that have simply not recurred for the last 8 years. I’ve tried a lot of different programs through the years to add muscle mass and had limited success. After an extensive search elected to try Smart Strength and have been very happy with their approach, adding about 6lbs of muscle in 5 months.

This gym is different (in a good way), trainers are extremely knowledgeable, tailor a program to the individual, and don’t try and sell you a bunch of products.

It is also extremely efficient to only go twice per week with extremely focused sessions (not a lot of chit chat) which was exactly what I was looking for.

If you want a sustaining program to build muscle for the long-haul, this is the place!

Smart Strength Austin was highly recommended to me by a good friend. I started out about 4 months ago hoping to get some improvement to my very stiff knee following total knee replacement, I also have a totally fused spine which makes things challenging. I did PT and tried everything but I still couldn't really walk very well. The progress I've made with Smart Strength is amazing and totally exceeded my expectations. I can walk much better, have much better strength in my entire body and have increased bone density. Hard to believe in such a short time and I continue to improve. It is an intense, controlled workout totally overseen by a talented exercise physiologist that keeps me on track. It is some of the best money I've spent as I age.

Posted January 2023. After 2 years of bond strength training with Edwin Guadarrama at Smart Strength, bone scan shows that I am no longer in the osteoporosis category and am in osteopenia and I do not need another bone scan until fall of 2024. Here's more to the story: At the recommendation of a friend who had trained with Skyler for years, I came to Smart Strength in December 2020 after a diagnosis of osteoporosis (which was showing up in my hip) and began training twice a week, approximately 30 minutes each session. The endocrinologist I saw when I was diagnosed with osteoporosis recommended strongly that I start taking prescription medication to slow the loss of bone (and also indicated that there was no way to rebuild bone). I was concerned about the potential side effects of all the suggested medications and indicated I wanted to try something else. No other treatment was offered. Therefore, I began to look for a new endocrinologist and I started taking estradiol and progesterone daily (older school than newer meds and my research seemed to indicate that if you take one without the other, there were reported cases in the U.S. of uterine cancer; the urologist I saw prescribed these). New endocrinologist at first visit said that, as I was doing well on the meds prescribed by the urologist, I should continue them. I did and am still on them. Bone scan for 2021 (so just over 7 months of training) did not appear to show any more bone loss and endocrinologist said it looked that there might be some gains, but, as it was done on a different machine (and apparently comparing scans yearly from the same machine is more likely to show changes than using different machines), the endocrinologist wanted me to have a scan in 2022. At my annual appointment in January 2023, the endocrinologist said that I was out of osteoporosis and obviously the medication plus the bone strength training were working. I do NOT have another bone scan this year and the next time will be in 2024. Yay, hooray. For anyone who has been diagnosed with bone loss (osteopenia or osteoporosis), I recommend that you talk to your endocrinologist about bone strength training.
