I was excited to try SoLA out as I live nearby and routinely see the classes running in the Zilker neighborhood. I booked an Open Gym slot and showed up but they don't staff a front desk and it's not clear who actually works there. After walking around the gym, not being greeted by anyone and realizing that there were no racks setup for weightlifting I left thinking maybe I just chose the wrong time for my first session. Later through their automated messaging I shared my experience and was met with "So sorry you had that experience. We don't have front desk staff and likely our Coach was busy Coaching. Hope you find a spot that suits your needs better." A bad first time experience made worse by their lack of customer service with seemingly no interest in making the experience of a potential new member better.

When I started at sola, I was but a small pipsqueak. Truly a pathetic man, but with the excellent coaching and programming at sola, I am now a burly hunky man. All the women want me and all the men want to be me. I am what Greg glassman envisioned as the CrossFit ubermench. All thanks to sola CrossFit :) also the equipment is well maintained, the gym is clean and everyone’s very friendly. If you train at sola all your dreams will come true 👍

NOT A REVIEW; an observation. I looked into joining SoLa CrossFit gym near Zilker in a residential neighborhood. When I went I was ACCOSTED by a homeowner who started yelling at ME because SoLa CrossFit doesn’t have adequate parking; residential street parking only. They went on saying that the SoLa CrossFit folk exercise in the street, sidewalk and public easements (huh?). I just left…never went in the building to look at rates. I don’t think the neighbors are happy with their presence, AGAIN; not a review. I’m sure it’s a great gym. I wish I could join without neighborhood pushback. BTW maybe only 6 or 7 people working out at the time; didn’t seem like a nuisance to ME but I don’t own a million dollar house across the street. Giving 5 stars so it doesn’t undermine their, I’m sure, well deserved ratings.

6 month ago I was a yoga/ Pilates girl but now I am soooooo much more thanks to Sola! It made me realize how cool being strong feels! I wandered into this gym and just took it one class at a time. I was immediately struck by how friendly and welcoming the gym goers are and how accommodating the instructors are to meet you where you are fitness wise. When you arrive people say hi if they’ve never seen you in class and you are immediately cheering for each other to get your workout done. All ages and fitness levels are here- and everyone is just killing it by showing up. There are many movements I haven’t done since I was a kid, like a handstand, or a rope climb! And let me tell you, it feels so good to be asked to do these movements again and realize you can do it if you try! I learned a lot of my limitations were really mental, and the coaches help me work through that too. So mentally and physically, if you wanna grow, try it!!!

Absolutely cannot beat the community at SoLa. For a non CrossFit girlie, I was a bit intimidated but I have really enjoyed my strength training sessions. The gym is welcoming, clean, open, and airy and even has a sauna and cold plunge (if you dare). Jess is the best and I have never felt stronger.

LOVE my workouts at SoLa. It’s the cleanest, most well-equipped CrossFit I’ve ever been to. Their coaches are knowledgeable and welcoming, and the community is motivating and fun! They’ve hosted several comps and the owner Jess always puts together a well-run and organized event. Sola has won Best CrossFit Gym in Austin and it’s easy to see why! Check them out! I normally don't review businesses but this place is just so awesome, I had to do it.
I have been going to SoLa CrossFit for approx. 4-5 years. The quality of workouts, the instructors and even the other clients in the gym (yes that is important to me) compel me to come here several times a week. In fact, there are other CrossFit places much closer to my house and I have tried them before but none compare.
Everyone is always sincerely friendly and supportive.
There is a good mix of women and men working out which is telling of the welcoming culture.
The workouts are always hard but if you are tired that day, you can do things at your pace and no one is making you feel bad about it. People are just happy that you showed up and so am I.

After going to this gym for almost a year, I’m so grateful for the amazing coaches and community that are extremely welcoming and helpful to newcomers. There are very thorough programs that keep things interesting while building toward specific goals. The coaches give great tips and tricks to make sure you’re using the right form. They give you feedback throughout the class and are very approachable. The Wodify app and system that’s used makes it easy to see your progress over time. There are regular social events that make it easy to make friends and have some fun outside the gym.
10/10 would recommend.

Everyone at the gym was lovely and helpful, but I would not return there based on the way they have their stations set up within the gym.
I have been doing crossfit since 2018. I'm not very good at crossfit, but I have dropped into a lot of boxes while traveling. Most crossfit gyms are great and always provide a good workout. They all have their quirks. Most of the time, their quirks are not so negative that I wouldn't go back.
At Sola, the bars and plates are set up in workout stations that are grouped in rows. The bars (one 45 and one 35) are stuck into the weights, sword style. In order to access your 5s, 10s, or 15s, you need to remove the 35 bar and put it to the side, then sort through the weights. The 45 is stuck into the 25 and 45 pound plates, so if you are using a 35, you need to remove the 45 lb bar and sort through the larger plates. This is a huge time waster for when you are trying to do a strength exercise and have 10 minutes or so. Even if you lay out all of your weights before hand, it takes way more time then just getting them from a rack or those wheely holders. Then, you still have to put it all back together at the end. The plates have to be pin perfectly straight in order for the bar to slide back in. Because they are rubber bumper plates and grab onto eachother, If they are off by a smidge, then you need to remove and re-stack all of the weights. This is quite frustrating after an intense strength workout and metcon. I think the owners were trying to be innovative by having everything the athlete needs in a single station. While I appreciated good organization, this thing with the bars and the plates is a complete fail. With so many crossfit gyms in Austin, I recommend dropping in at a different one and not Sola.

The Good and The Workable
SoLa CrossFit thrives on its vibrant community, making workouts enjoyable and memorable. The community of members is the gyms strongest suit. Special shoutout to Dave – if you land his class, it’s top-tier training.
The price tag of $250/month feels steep, especially for a community gym. While Austin’s living costs are rising, the membership fee here feels a notch above comparable gyms. They offer premium add-ons like saunas and ice baths, but these come at extra charges.
Customer loyalty doesn’t seem a strong focus, and improving recognition or rewards for long-term members could bolster community ties. Equipment is satisfactory, but overcrowding sometimes requires equipment swaps during workouts, a minor inconvenience. There is noticeable coach turnover, which adds to the inconsistency.
Location and programming are strong points, but with some tweaks – especially in coaching and fostering community – SoLa could truly shine brighter.

I joined SoLa in July of 2022 and I have never been able to consistently lift weights. I have been a runner for almost a decade but I wanted to change up my workout and get professional coaching. Let me say, SoLa was a great decision, the coaches are knowledgable, patient and helpful. I am completely new and they have taught me so much in just a month. What I like most about each workout is that there are multiple options for each fitness level and I never feel judged for scaling the workout. Each workout is challenging without being impossible so I would highly recommend SoLa

I fall into the camp of "did literally nothing during the pandemic" and a year later I had an extra 30 pounds to show for it. I tried the working out at home by myself routine but I found myself just making excuses and perpetuating the cycle I was used to for the last year. I knew I needed to put myself out there and actually attend classes in order to see results. I had already heard great things about SOLA Fitness when they were CrossFit affiliated, so I did a little digging on FB, IG and Google and it looked super positive.
I’ve officially been attending classes 3x a week for a couple of weeks now and all I can say is this is the BEST decision I’ve made in the past year! First let’s talk facilities – super clean, I mean really clean (for those of you that have done CF at other gyms you know that this is a big deal). Class sizes are restricted to 14 people and all of us are social distanced within our own little taped off area complete with everything we need that day for the WOD. Next is the owners/coaches – the gym is owned by a husband/wife team and they are like the “dream team” – both are really down to earth and super easy to talk to. Joining a new gym can be so intimidating and I really think Jess and Dave do a great job of getting know their members and their specific goals. You realize really quickly that both know what they are talking about and have the experience to back it up.
The overall gym vibe is super laid back and it’s not like some gyms where you are stepping into a fog of testosterone (aka Bro Down). Don’t get me wrong – people are serious here about their fitness and when the workout starts it’s all business; but they smile, they laugh and they are genuinely happy to be here. I consider myself to be a little socially awkward and introverted in group settings but everything about this place is inclusive and positive – that’s a win in my book.
If you are on the fence about joining a gym or feeling stuck from the past year, don’t hesitate to check this place out. I have no regrets other than wishing I had done this sooner!

The modern gym had burned me out. Working out solo. Feeling like a robot. Just about everyone wearing ear buds or toying with their phone. No community as in mere friendliness. Plus monitors, TVs, music, antiseptic AC. What to do?
Being a truth teller, I must admit: I was a little intimidated when I first observed a Sola workout. The weights looked huge (only to later discover they're lighter than they look) and the workouts intense. Meaning focused, sweating, pushing limits.
Six months past, I'm all in. The trainers are top-notch, the workouts varied, and the open-air facility safe and outdoor refreshing. There's genuine camaraderie among members and felt welcome from day one. First few months, and to this day, more experienced members recognize my efforts after a workout with a sincere "way to go." That simple prompt means a lot.
Jess, a co-owner with her spouse, Dave, a trainer and experienced athletic coach. She answered all my questions while Dave worked with me one-on-one for a few sessions on form, posture, safety, and kept a close eye as I began. That a training orientation is required of all new members speaks volumes. It also feels great to support a local venture, not some corporate giant with long contracts and hidden fees.
After the first few weeks, I soon realized it's all about my personal edge, not comparing myself to others. Your limits and aspirations, and supporting others in theirs. You'll find ages young, mid, and older. I love the varied "cross-fit" aerobic, weight, stretching, and more, approach. They recently added a mini gym area, so workouts can be augmented by traditional weight lifting. Love the wood deck.
Sola classes are 60 fast-paced minutes. No time to be stuck in the head. It's the most productive hour of my day. Classes are small -- 12 or so -- and run from early morning to early evening. The workout area is sectioned off into zones, and the Manhattan-beach, open-door, open-air layout, plus fans as large as windmills, is refreshing given Austin's temperate climate. For anyone with Covid concerns, this is a big plus.
The monthly fee is more than a run-of-the-mill gym -- but not when a personal trainer once or twice a month is factored into the equation, which is a fair comparison considering the personal attention and small class size.

Was looking to try out some CrossFit style training while staying in Austin for a month and a half and after taking a look at a few other gyms in the area, my husband and I knew SOLA was the place for us! The coaches are patient and encouraging, they really want to make sure you grow your skills with the right form.
We loved every single coach, Dave, CJ, Waleed, Rudy. Jess was really great to work with also, making sure we had everything we needed. You really can't beat the energy here. The members were welcoming and even helpful when they could see we needed some guidance on anything from which weight to choose to where to find good eats around town.
It's the perfect balance of making sure you're comfortable with the movements and a challenging/competitive environment. 100% recommend and can't wait to come back!
P.S. especially good w/ COVID protocols and regular gym hygiene in general, far better than most other gyms we've seen.

Quite possibly the worst managed gym I've been a part of. The owners seem to forget that there are literally 23 other fitness facilities on South Lamar alone. The reason people go to a specific location is for the sense of community and coaching relationships. The ownership is incredibly good at constantly making changes that deter that aspect. Huge thumbs down!

A handful of friends and I have been dropping in here since 2014. Every time we visit Austin this becomes our home gym. Everyone is so welcoming! Ben coaches the Stak class and he’s awesome!
Tim has an awesome OLY set up in the back! Such a great addition to a gym!

I've been a member for just over a year and really enjoy the box. Great coaches, good community and nice variety of programming. Traditional CrossFit, Sweat provides a cardio focus and Raww Barbell for traditional power lifting. Really has something for everyone.

A must visit establishment. Look no further.
We dropped in from Fort Worth, Texas and immediately felt like we were members at Crossfit South Lamar.
Zach was an awesome coach. Not only was he knowledgeable in his programming, but he fully prepared every level of athlete for the workout with properly mobility and movement prep.
A huge THANK YOU to everyone at Crossfit South Lamar for making us feel like part of your Crossfit family.
We will be back.

Dropped in while in town for work. Nice box; clean and well-laid out with plenty of room. Zach is a great coach - leading and explaining mobility exercises, focusing on key motions in the metcon and motivating the class during the 20 minute workout (yeah, it was one of those!). He also made it a point to make me feel welcome - as did the class.

The best gym in Austin! Where do I start? I came from an amazing gym so my standards were high from the start. Why? Because Crossfit is very expensive, if you're going to charge that much it better be worth it. From the start the owners, David Appel and Marcos Cordova, were extremely inviting and helpful. The atmosphere was great and the people were even better. Great sound system and super clean equipment! The trainers are very knowledgeable and uplifting, but one in particular, James Quigley! This man is a game changer, full of positivity and accountablity. I can't say enough good things about him, he's about growth, education and overall life improvement! Keep it up James.

Dropped in on the 530 class. It was nice to see a lot of people there that early. Dave and Taylor (coaches) were very welcoming. Great facility. They definitely work you too. Will definitely drop in again when I am back in town.
