I started going to Starting Strength in July of 2025 after realizing that I needed more structure than a ‘normal’ gym could provide. Honestly it’s been one of the best things I’ve done for my health in a long time!

I’ve lost 25lbs, who knows how many inches and I’m lifting more weight than I ever thought I could. My hip mobility has increased dramatically and my confidence has grown right along with it. It’s been so cool to see my body shrink back onto its frame while building muscle and getting stronger at the same time.

Coach Blake is the actual best and I’m so grateful I ended up in his class! He’s super helpful, so friendly, and really great at giving instruction. Genuinely feels like I’m working out with a friend!

Do yourself a favor and check Starting Strength out.

I have loved my experience at Starting Strength. I have an assigned time slot with the same coach 2x/week which makes it easy for me to just show up. My coach tells me what to do and what weight to use. They watch my form during every set so I feel more confident that I will not hurt myself. They are supportive and encouraging.

I’ve tried a number of different fitness classes in the past two years and starting strength is the only one that I have ben able to successfully stick with - the combination of coaching, combined with routines that are self paced but actually work with measurable results has been fantastic. Big thanks to Mark, Elysa and the team for making this such a fun and positive experience that gets you real results

I cannot say enough good things about Starting Strength! The program is so simple (which doesn’t mean it’s easy — it’s challenging, but simple to understand!) and it works. The group classes are small and you get your own platform, so there’s never any waiting for space or equipment, you’re never rushed, and your coach can watch you do every single rep and provide personalized guidance. They’re also big on proper recovery through sleep, rest, and basic nutrition — protein, carbs, sufficient calories — and they keep in touch with you outside of the gym to check in. I never thought I’d be someone who actually looks forward to working out, let alone lifting weights, but I am now that person and it’s tremendously improved my life on both the physical and mental level.

I’ve been with SS for 6 months now, and it’s been such a great journey! I’ve always been considered “thin” at around 100 lbs and honestly never thought I’d be able to squat 155 lbs in such a short time. The first couple of months my progress felt fast, then it slowed down and I got a little discouraged, but that’s when my coach really made the difference. The coaches here are so knowledgeable and really know how the body works. They adjust the program to fit you personally, which helped me break through plateaus and keep building strength. What makes SS unique is that every member has a coach, and they’re all trained to guide you in the most science-based, effective, and efficient way. Now I feel stronger not just physically, but also mentally.

Turning 65 next year and decided to get stronger. Was always a runner and swimmer. Coach Mark safely and steadily has me lifting weights I would have thought not possible months ago. The environment at Starting Strength is welcoming to both beginners and experienced men and women in the world of lifting weights. Give it a try!

I am an older female couch potato who has now completed 5 weeks, working out 3 times per week, and I enjoy this so much more than I ever expected. Physically, it’s made me feel ten times better. The minor aches and pains seem to disappear. It’s wonderful for my mental health. And my increased strength has made day-to-day life easier. I have a strong, 100 pound dog who won’t stand still for a bath. My son has always helped me bathe this dog. Last week, I did that chore all alone, without thinking twice. I enjoy that increased level of daily independence. The trainers are smart, kind, and patient. They really do know how to gradually build strength. They teach me proper form and they pay close attention to how I’m doing. They watch me do every single lift, press, or squat. They keep me safe, prevent me from hurting myself. I’ve never felt terribly sore after a workout - just happy and invigorated. I’m truly getting stronger. Thank you to everyone at Starting Strength, especially coach E!

Starting Strength has removed all the obstacles that previously prevented me from working out consistently. They tell me exactly what to do, so I don’t feel intellectually overwhelmed when overthinking the best workout routine. They watch my form at every set so I don’t feel scared of hurting myself. And I have an assigned time slot with the same coach 3x/week which makes it easy for me to just show up. I’m loving it!

If you're reading these comments and are still on the fence somehow, take the plunge! I had read the source material years ago and implemented some of it successfully, but the coaching and dedicated power rack access is a complete game changer. Gone are the days of showing up to a big gym and waiting 15-20 minutes for a squat rack. Instead, you'll enter each session with a clear gameplan and receive actionable feedback during your lifts. Everyone is very knowledgeable and kind!

If you're looking for a transformative strength training program, Starting Strength is the gold standard. The coaching staff is exceptional—highly knowledgeable, motivating, and genuinely invested in your progress. The environment is super welcoming, creating a space where both beginners and experienced lifters feel comfortable.

One of the standout features is the supportive community of members who cheer each other on, fostering motivation and camaraderie. It's more than just a workout; it's a place to grow stronger together. Highly recommended! 💪

I joined Starting Strength after avoiding weight lifting for years. It’s a great program for lifters of any level, especially those new or getting back into lifting as the programming is easy to follow and the method is effective. The coaches are all very knowledgeable and will monitor your movements to ensure that you are completing each lift properly, while also guiding you through any plateaus you may hit as you continue to progress. As long as you stay consistent and trust the process, you will see results!

I've been a client of Starting Strength Austin for 20 months now, and it's been one of the best and most rewarding decisions I've ever made. Don't worry if you don't have any prior experience - I was 37 when I joined, had never lifted weights before, and was just generally unfit. The coaches are very patient, my amazing coach Jeff Bernitz stuck with me until things finally started to click, and I've honestly been amazed at my progress. If you're looking to lift heavy, the program absolutely works - I started my deadlift at 135lbs and already reached a milestone of a 500lb pull, along with a 385 lb squat and a 285 lb bench press. The group format works really well - you're essentially paying for private training at a fraction of the cost, and while you're resting someone else is lifting. The coaches also are trained to provide nutritional advice if you need it. I really encourage anyone interested to check it out in person - I'm confident you aren't going to find anything better, especially if you want to make the most progress possible.

Just had a great free 30 minute session with Mark! He talked me through their process, answered all my questions, and took me through a few sets of the overhead press to show me how they coach form and load their clients. Beautiful, open space with dedicated platforms takes the stress out of having to wait and rotate in at a typical gym. A lovely experience start to finish!

I can't say enough good things about Starting Strength Austin - Sunset Valley. The coaches are knowledgeable, patient, and truly invested in your progress. The facility is clean and well-equipped with everything you need for proper barbell training. What sets them apart is their attention to form and technique - they've helped me make more strength gains in months than I did in years of working out on my own. The supportive community keeps me motivated and coming back. If you're serious about getting stronger in a safe, effective way, this is absolutely the place to be.

I joined Starting Strength because I wanted to get stronger with the guidance of a personal coach while still enjoying the energy of a group setting. I’m not particularly competitive, but that didn’t matter - this program is about personal progress, and with the excellent coaching, I've continued to get stronger and stronger.

The combination of a structured approach and a supportive atmosphere has been transformative. If you're looking for a program that prioritizes proper technique, consistent progress, and expert coaching, I highly recommend Starting Strength.

This gym is THE place in Austin to build strength and fitness within a supportive, caring community. It’s my second gym home after Starting Strength Austin (W Anderson). As a sister gym, it shares the same familiar look and feel but offers more space and an abundance of natural light.

As a barbell-focused gym, it has everything you need for barbell training. The equipment is top-notch—you’d be hard-pressed to find a better place to lift. The coaches are incredible—friendly, knowledgeable, and, most importantly, deeply invested in your well-being. They coach every rep of every set with genuine care.

The community here is FANTASTIC. Everyone—from novices to experienced lifters—supports and encourages each other. It’s an inspiring, uplifting environment to pursue your fitness goals.

I have been doing Starting Strength for a little over three years now. I frequently refer to it as the "best thing I've done for myself in years."

For me, the thing that sets Starting Strength apart from other gyms or fitness programs is the coaching. To be certified as a SS coach takes a large amount of time and apprenticeship, and it pays off. The program is set up in a way that _every time_ you do a work set for one of your exercises, a coach is focused on you and giving you queues. This is important because as your performance improves and the weight gets heavier, it is easy to sacrifice form, and their coaching corrects that.

I also like Starting Strength because it is a fun community of people. You see the same people at your scheduled class and also interact with people in the classes before and after you. Everyone is extremely supportive of others as they're lifting. Even though it's "barbell lifting," it is a very relaxed and comfortable environment. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Starting Strength to anyone. You notice results pretty fast, and then the challenges keep coming (the weight can always go up!).

Here's a picture of me benching 250! (yes, I'm proud of that one ;-) ).

I've had a great experience at Starting Strength, both in restoring function I lost to an accident, as well as hitting new personal records in terms of strength. This is the newer of the two gyms in the area, and is both larger (with more racks for accommodating people/schedules) as well as nicer equipment (that being said, the equipment at both gyms is very good).

Starting Strength has been a truly life-changing experience for me. I joined in August 2023, midway through my weight loss journey, searching for a program that would support body recomposition and help me stay strong as I age. While the top-notch equipment and facilities are impressive, what truly sets Starting Strength apart is the coaching staff. The level of attention and guidance in their classes is unmatched. Your coach designs a personalized plan to help you reach your goals and adapts it as you progress. The experience has been incredible for me, and I recommend Starting Strength every chance I get.

I had a 1 on 1 session with Ray G and he helped me create a personalized plan incorporating my fitness goals, body type, and injury history. Ray gave dedicated attention to each aspect of the lifts, fine-tuning them to my individual needs, which he worked to understand in our pre-workout discussion. I have a history of back injuries, but was able to squat and deadlift pain free for the first time in years. I am excited to see where proper form, coaching, and consistency takes me from here.

I've been a member of Starting Strength Austin for 15 months now, and it's been a truly transformative experience. This isn't just a gym; it's a place where you learn and apply the proven principles of the Starting Strength method, as outlined in the books by Mark Rippetoe.

Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to attend a session with Mark Rippetoe himself at the Sunset Valley gym, along with the gym owner Ray Gillenwater. The insights and knowledge they shared were invaluable. What's more, I received a compliment on my squat form, which I wholeheartedly attribute to the exceptional coaching I've received from Andrea Mates. Her attention to detail and dedication to proper form have been instrumental in my progress.

Starting Strength Austin truly embodies the core principles of the Starting Strength method: focusing on the basic barbell lifts (squat, press, deadlift, bench press) and emphasizing linear progression. The coaching here is top-notch, and the environment is supportive and encouraging. If you're serious about strength training and want to learn the right way, this is the place to be. I highly recommend Starting Strength Austin to anyone looking to build real, functional strength.

If you want to get stronger, do yourself a favor and book a free training session at Starting Strength Gyms – Sunset Valley. You’ll be grateful you did! Their approach is practical, effective, and completely pressure-free.

The Sunset Valley team is top-notch. Before they can coach, they undergo an extensive training, like someone earning a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. You don’t just show up and get one; you have to put in the work and truly understand the craft.

I’ve read the Starting Strength “Blue Book” and The Barbell Prescription (for us 40+ lifters) and have been training inconsistently on my own for a few years. However, I knew I needed expert guidance to improve my squat and continue progressing.

Ray Gillenwater coached me for my session, and the experience was incredibly valuable. He immediately identified areas where I could improve, such as adjusting my stance, fixing my grip, and fine-tuning my overall movement. His coaching was direct, insightful, and easy to apply.

But what stood out even more was his focus on my goals. When I mentioned that I train with my wife, he went above and beyond by suggesting a second session that included her—helping us both move forward together. That level of personal investment in clients is rare.

If you’re serious about getting stronger, don’t hesitate—book your free session today. You have nothing to lose and strength to gain! 💪

I scheduled a free 30-minute coaching session with Ray Gillenwater, Founder of Starting Strength Gyms, and it truly exceeded my expectations. Ray was incredibly generous with both his time and considerable expertise, extending the session well past 30 minutes, delving even deeper into the material. He considered my background, personal goals, limitations, and schedule to craft a tailored program for my success. I’m excited to begin training with Starting Strength-Austin!

Starting Strength coaching has been one of the major turning points in my health and quality of life. After training at Starting Strength Austin for several months in 2021, my entire health and way of life changed - no longer pre-diabetic, no longer suffer from crippling knee pain and back pain, and my mood and outlook on life has been the most dramatic change.

There is just no substitute for in-person coaching at a Starting Strength gym. After trying this on my own for a while in my garage, I came in to the South Austin location for a form check with Ray Gillenwater and learned so much in this one session. This session will absolutely change the trajectory of my progress going forward.

The money and time I have spent with Starting Strength in person coaching, online coaching, and the books/online content have been the best investment in my health I have ever made.

I’ve known about the Starting Strength program for years but didn’t realize they had certified coaches and physical locations until recently. After recovering from a nine-year (unrelated) back injury, I was ready to rebuild my strength and knew this was the most efficient way to do it. I joined in November 2023 when this location opened, and the investment has absolutely paid off.

After 5–6 months of training, I felt much more stable and secure in my movements. I then took a break to focus on HIIT workouts and aerobic conditioning before returning this past December. Since coming back, I’ve continued to see great results while incorporating some light running and walking on the side.

As someone who has recovered from an injury in the past, I really appreciate the emphasis on safety and form. Even when pushing myself, I always feel like I’m getting the right oversight to avoid injury. Mark is a fantastic coach, and the structured, no-nonsense approach of Starting Strength has made a huge difference for me. I’ve recommended this gym to multiple friends and will continue to do so!

I enjoy the formatting of this program. The continued documentation really helps. I have a great coach — deeply knowledgeable, positive, and provides solid, succinct feedback.

Starting Strength is a lot cheaper than a traditional personal trainer (and feels a lot less boring). I enjoy the community aspect of the small group that train at the same time slot as myself. I’ve gained 15lbs of muscle in six months, so the gym gets its job done.

Once you get in to the groove, showing up three days a week feels easy, and the growth is worth it. Whether your goal is to combat atrophy, add size, or just increase strength for daily living, SS fits the need. Attached are some comparison photos of just my own sheer back growth journey. The Starting Strength format clearly works.

Highly recommend this place. My son (14 years) trained here and made massive improvements in the main lifts. Mark was great in adapting the program to my son. In a few months, my son surpassed my own PBs in all lifts. Unfortunately, my son's school schedule and commitments didn't allow us to continue. If he does decide to go back, we will go back to starting strength.

My only complaint is that I hadn't heard about this gym sooner! This method delivers what it promises. I'm reading the book as I go along and am completely sold on the program. I am measurably stronger. The coaches are all very knowledgeable and care about my progress. I am beyond impressed by how much attention and feedback I get for the price of membership. This is essentially personal training at a fraction of the price. The other members are all welcoming and happy to help. If you are on the fence, just do the free session and you'll know what you need to do.

Would HIGHLY recommend to someone who wants to increase strength on their core lifts (squat, deadlift, bench press, push press) safely, confidently and consistently.

I've been in the program for the past 4 weeks and have already acquired lots of key feedback that's helped me improve my technique on lifts I've been doing for 15 + years (former collegiate athlete).

There are nuances to these complex lifts that have always eluded me due to lack of proper education + supervision. That's what this program offers.

In particular, Mark is someone who possesses deep knowledge of weightlifting and provides super helpful / easy-to-digest cues to ensure technique is maintained as weight increases 💪

Would recommend to anyone with beginner to intermediate knowledge / experience

My experience at Starting Strength Austin gym exceeded all expectations! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with warmth and enthusiasm by the friendly staff. The atmosphere is inviting and motivating, with a focus on serious strength training in a supportive community environment.

The coaches at Starting Strength Austin are truly top-notch. They are incredibly knowledgeable, passionate, and dedicated to helping each member achieve their fitness goals safely and effectively. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced lifter, the coaches provide personalized instruction and encouragement every step of the way.

The gym itself is well-equipped with high-quality strength training equipment, including squat racks, barbells, and plenty of space for deadlifts, presses, and other lifts. The emphasis on compound movements and proper form ensures that you get the most out of every workout, whether you're looking to build strength, improve technique, or increase muscle mass.

One of the things I appreciate most about Starting Strength Austin is the sense of camaraderie among members. Everyone is supportive and encouraging, creating a positive and motivating atmosphere that keeps you coming back for more. Whether you're lifting heavy weights or just starting out, you'll feel welcomed and encouraged by the community here.

Overall, I can't recommend Starting Strength Austin gym highly enough. If you're serious about strength training and looking for a supportive, results-driven environment to reach your fitness goals, this is the place to be. I'm grateful to have found such an exceptional gym and look forward to continuing my fitness journey here for years to come!

I don’t do reviews. I was on the internet one day looking for information on how to begin lifting weights. I came across a method on reddit called “starting strength” and I noticed there was a gym in Austin also called starting strength and I signed up (not knowing it was the first starting strength gym) I originally thought I would take a few classes and learn how to lift weights then move on. It’s been a year and a half and I’m at least 3x stronger than when I started. I originally started at the West Anderson location then moved to Sunset Valley when the new gym opened. Mark and David have been very encouraging and patient with me. The community is great, everyone really tries to help one another! It’s not a gym where you’ll feel any judgement. I didn’t want to go to a gym where I would have to wait to use equipment, you just show up get a rack and go. If you’re on the fence, just know that it’s worth it!
