I want to start by laying down some foundation. I am from out of town & I was visiting this gym while on a work trip. I am someone who works out 6 days a week for the last 5 years. I lift for my health & physique. I am a natural lifter. Not on juice aka steroids.

You can tell this gym at one point had its peak and was probably a great & amazing all around serious gym. However, it seems like that has faded and lost its touch.

The owner Mary seems to bit an out of touch or just crazy. A big disappointment is not being allowed to carry your gym bag around the gym. Out of about 50 different gyms I’ve been to throughout my work trips and home gyms I’ve only experienced 2 gyms with this rule. Much less a “Serious” gym.
She claims it is due to liability issues & people stealing weights etc. Says I have to leave it up front. Then proceeds to tell me not to worry about my bag being stolen. How she has cameras in the gym to make me feel better. Yet, she was concerned about her own weights being stolen??? It was funny to me.

It was $20 for a day pass and proceeds to tell me about abunch of famous power lifters & body builders who have worked out there and how much weight she lifted in her prime. Then tells me I look like I have a decent build and tells me to grow up and not worry about having my bag with me.
The only reason I like to have my bag is because of my gym straps, belt, headphones, and other accessories I may or may not need during my session. It’s inconvenient to walk back-and-forth to the area just to grab your stuff.

Once I realize how Ludacris this was, I was very tempted to go elsewhere. At the same the situation was making me laugh, and my pre-workout was kicking in already So I decided to stay. I told her she she’s lucky my pre-workout was kicking in so I paid the $20 and left my bag up front. Then she proceeded to tell me how I was the lucky one and how much money in equipment she has in the building. I Laughed some more and took her word for it.

Then she says I need a towel in order to work out. Turns out it’s not just a little towel. It’s a full bathing towel. I noticed everyone covers all the benches all the equipment that they use in this full towel so no clothing or skin touches the machines and then you still have to Wipe the machines afterwards. She let me borrow a full sized towel since I didn’t have one. The gym was very clean due to this procedure, but it’s very inconvenient as someone working out and has to take extra steps and carry around a big towel. This was a buzz kill.

The gym was pretty empty, and the vibes were dull.

It was chest day for me & there was a few vital chest machines that were missing. They could add some proper cable machines for chest workouts.

Overall, I don’t think I would return. This was just my experience and as someone from out of town, I wanted to let others know.

Thank you.

Awesome gym. Plenty of room, machines and free weights. Lay out is easy to follow and other rooms for various exercises. Will return when I bust El Paso again.

Very well maintained gym with plenty of equipment. At the time I had a membership and experienced the gym, the hours were much different and made the gym inaccessible to anyone that worked 9-5, but it seems they have improved. They have a fairly strict gym etiquette that includes no gym chalk or lugging your bags around which is fairly normal among other gyms, but was something I had hoped a gym focused on serious strength training and bodybuilding would allow, whether in a select area or outside. Which also begs the question of why they haven't developed the outside area. They have a fairly large enclosed training outside that they could install equipment for anyone that would want to train with sleds or tires, or barbells and platforms. They're also short on some more common equipment like chest flies or cable machines, despite having some very niche workout equipment you wouldn't find in 500 miles.

Overall I'd consider it a great gym, it's unbelievably clean and isn't too packed making most of the machines accessible. Never experienced any of the drama from Mary or any BS from any of the members there.

First of all I’ve been to over 100 gyms around the united states. This is my favorite gym I’ve ever been to in the entire United States. 9 bicep machines, 8 leg press machines, a variety of 1974 nautilus equipment she even has a bunch of 2004 nautilus equipment. If you know you know nautilus has the best range of motions and training equipment out of any other brand ever made. Any body part you want to work out you’re going to find more machines here then any gym in El Paso. Especially leg day.. the price of the gym is very affordable. after looking around and realizing theres over 2 million dollars worth of equipment. You get what you pay for in life. Also mary is the gym owner and she is a bad ass woman she use to train professionally she’s a gnarly old school broad but she means well and she loves all her members and has a heart of gold. Mary will keep the gym open later for her members just to finish their workout. If you ever get your self a chance to work out here or join this gym it will be the best decision you ever made. You couldn’t pay me to train at any other gym in El Paso.

This is probably the best gym in EP. But it’s no nonsense. If you don’t understand gym etiquette you will be informed and if you can’t comply you will be bounced. It’s also warm, if you don’t want to work and sweat then it’s not for you.
This is the Princess of Pump’s gym. Work or leave.

The owner Mary, was a very nice woman. The gym is kinda crazy in a good way! They have super unique machines and a bunch of different sections. It’s very diverse. If you’re looking for a serious gym and want to feel like an animal I’d recommend this place. It’s worth the effort to drop in for the day pass at the very least to check it out.

Serious fitness. One of the few gyms in El Paso that will not turn into a Social Hour or a Day Care or the place to be seen. Go into workout. Respect members/member guest personal space. It’s very, very clean. Equipment is like a pro football weight room and better than university. Membership is worth it to workout in a clean and almost private gym (it’s never commercial gym busy ever)

Cheers

This gym is amazing. They have every machine you could ever want, two sets of free weight dumbells, cardio, boxing, and an advanced lifting area. There's just so much equipment here! Also this place is immaculate. It is kept so clean. The staff is constantly cleaning everything. The owner is also amazing, friendly, and will help you out with whatever you need. Came into the gym good establishment and all but the owner is way out of line. I met Mary and she is one of the most disrespectful people in the gym. She will body shame, insult you with profanities, racial slurs, and start fights for entertainment. The ambiance is terrible, the music sucks it’s soft rock ALL the time. Place sucked only people that have fun are her little group of friends that’s about it. She lets the senior crowd bully the young crowd which is why the gyms always dead.

Owner is trash crazy cenile old hag that just likes to gossip and spread rumors she thinks everyone is stealing from her and if your not on her good side will make your gym experience horrible will criticize you about your appearance. Toxic gym environment sadly cause of her. Gym is good. The owner mary is crazy. Reason why her nickname in this city is Crazy Mary. Stay away much better gyms put there like Sun City. Ep fitness, planet for half the price and no toxic environment created by the owner.

This place is such a joke of a gym. Music is what you hear in an old person grocery store. Walmart has a better playlist than this place. The environment is so toxic ! Either you’re in the owners clique and you get to have fun, or you’re on the owner and her friends short list. Saw a review about some old dude and I encountered him too. He’s a self centered entitled guy that thinks he’s better than everyone. This gym should be packed cause it’s the closest in the area to major communities but everyone avoids it at all costs. Now I see why. Thankfully I was there only for a 3 month contract. Left to SunCity Gym. Younger crowd, better music and the owner is actually nice. Only cool thing about the gym is the night manager, employees are cool but don’t last long. Good equipment but ran by a tyrant!

Had a 3 month membership. Owner caters to some old guy friend of hers during night time. He seems to start rumors, make members feel uncomfortable and treats employees bad. Owner knows and she does nothing about it. I saw him once almost physically get into an altercation with 3 highschool students, this member is well over 60 years old harrasing young female and male members. He constantly harrasss for peoples clothing yet he wears super inappropriate shorts that show off his junk and purposely works out near women. Owner she plays favorites and he seems to be one. She does not care about her staff or about her members. Lady lives in the past which is why this gym is EMPTY at all times. Boring music boring crowd and list goes on. No AC, no water fountains.

I attended this gym in 2022. I loved this gym so much I extended my stay in El Paso by several weeks just to keep working out here. They have literally every machine you could dream of (and some I had no idea existed). True paradise whether you're a serious lifter or just looking for a quiet place to work out. It's a huge gym so never found it to feel crowded, even when working out peak hours. The staff and the regulars (S/O Aaron) always made me feel at home. Would definitely stop by again if I'm ever back in El Paso.

Please understand…this GYM is for the SERIOUS! THIS IS NOT PLANET FITNESS! You come here to work!

This gym has so many weights and machines. Various pull systems and NEVER CROWDED! Their free weight dumbbells go to 200lbs…any type of training can be done here!

I did see reviews of the rule of having a towel…it’s just sanitary practice. And yes you need to disinfect the machine after use. If you have a problem of being clean take that to your gym of choice, but here the owner cares about you as the customer and your health. So yes, she will say something to you if you get your sweaty self up and don’t clean after yourself. (Would you let someone pee on your toilet and walk away?)

But if your dedicated and serious about changing your habits, your body, your mind…COME TO BACKSTREET GYM and join the family!

I joined this gym about a year ago when I was stationed here with the Army, when i went to see the gym it was explained to me that this was a month to month contract. I thought this was great. In October when my husband joined me in El Paso (also military) he joined my contract as well. In December, I had leg surgery and was no longer able to utilize the gym facilities, but we continued our memberships. In March, they closed the gym. The Army was given direct orders that they could not workout at any outside facilities. Backstreet Gym still charged our account during the time their facility was closed $108. May 27, after moving and we went back and asked how to cancel. The front desk employee handed me a card with an address and said all we had to do was send a certified letter saying we are cancelling and we wouldn't be charged further. No problem. We did this the same day and the letter was received May 29. Today, June 15, another draft showed up on my account for $108. I called Backstreet Gym to inquire about this as we had done what was asked of us to cancelled. The person who answered the phone was extremely condescending and questioning me on why I couldn't go to the gym when they have "E-9s and Generals going every day!" I explained I was given an order that we cannot use local gyms and I am not getting an Article 15 for going to their gym, plus we moved. She kept going back to the fact that other military members are ok with breaking the rules so I should be too. THEN, THEN SHE TELLS ME there is a $500 cancellation fee. WHAT? So I said, this information was not told to me when I asked about how to cancel She told me that I should read my contract. I handed the phone to my husband at this point. I'm astounded at the customer service, the fact that they think I should break direct orders from the military, and the lies that we were told by Backstreet Gym.

I wish I could give this gym 6 stars! I was a member here during my internship in El Paso. This has got to be the best gym I've ever experienced. It has all of the best weight lifting equipment and also enough racks that you almost never have to wait for weights! A lot of the equipment is so specialized I've never even seen it anywhere else. And as a bonus, the gym is always clean and all the weights are always returned to their home in an orderly fashion. #femaleownership On second thought, I wish I could give this gym 7 stars... Can't recommend enough.

The owner is totally nuts. She makes "offers" but then when people come in for them, "they are no longer available.". She treats her staff horribly, only one person has been able to accept her degradation for more than 6 months (how he's been there for years even at the request of his family to leave is beyond me)

The gym itself is good, especially if you prefer more old school lifting. However, she'll drag you into her personal issues and gossip if you so much as say hello. You have to sign the long contract (the thing is over 5 legal pages long) in the gym and you cannot take it home. The price is high and she runs off any personal trainers that she "hires".

Honestly, best avoid unless you can't get to Golds

I was a member of this gym for well over a year. My first impressions were amazing. The gym is well stocked, super clean and never super busy. It was and is a fantastic facility. So why the two stars?

In my 30+ years as a fitness competitor and expert, I have never seen such an unprofessional approach to running a gym. The gossip and negative energy generated by the very person who owns the gym boggles my mind.

I did my best to mitigate and ignore the baloney, but when an individual actively tries to pull you into the muck one must rethink why they are paying money to a facility that is sub-par when it comes to a positive experience.

I have a very active social media presence and I happily promoted this facility. Only to be accused of using the facility to make money somehow under the table or at the owner's expense. This is absurd as anybody can clearly see my online presence and I have never made money off the gym.

I could go on, but the bottom line is I will not pay good money to be in an environment where the management is less than professional.

The extremely high turnover rate at the front desk should have been a warning along with the low membership. I was just happy to be in a great facility that was never full. Now I know why. I've had several people decide not to join based on their experience with the owner during their visit with me for a workout. This is poor business at best.

It is a shame. The place was brilliantly designed and has great promise. It should be the hottest place in town, yet it falls short.

Pity, a lot of potential.

I called and was told that the gym was free on Mondays after 5 PM (I wanted to confirm this as I had already been told of this offer). I arrived; the paperwork necessary to try the establishment out for free was filled. Upon doing so, a tour was given. At the end, the owner arrived and stated that the offer was not valid anymore and wanted for the membership to be purchased immediately. Unfortunately, time was wasted because of this experience. There needs to be a consensus on what they are doing. I don't know if the workers or if the owner was right, nor should it be my concern - this is deceitful advertising.

In my opinion Backstreet Gym is the best gym in El Paso. I worked in EP for a little over a year. The main area is very clean and well kept. The back, caged area has a rugged and rough feel to it encouraging you to get after it. I made sure to buy a shirt before I moved away so I could give it some rep in CO. She has ever piece of equipment or workout tool you could need from very heavy dumbbells to machines to tires.

The only caveat I would offer is to actually read the contract. The only complaints I have ever heard were because people didn’t understand the contract details. Yes, it is cumbersome to cancel if you’ve already moved away (certified letter of move) and cancelling prior to the full 12 months results in a very large fee but it is Mary’s gym and she has a business to run. Seems more like a labor of love to me.

Also, don’t be surprised if she yells at people for slacking or not cleaning up! Ha

All criticisms are met with Mary's fake responses and then disregard. She is a train wreck and definitely practices what she preaches when it comes to using steroids to get huge at the expense of your body and bones. It is a very unfortunate culture she has created. She represents everything wrong with the gym industry and why people cut corners to look big because they feel ashamed of themselves. The gym is not about fitness but about false appearances and she insults people that she doesn't think are big enough. It is honestly very disappointing to have a place like this in El Paso.

Best Gym experience in town. Has plenty of equipment to satisfy most if not all work out routines.

Didn't even make it in to the gym! I was wanting a drop in rate for a day as I live out of state. Was quoted $20 a day pass! almost half of what their MONTHLY membership is. Too bad, I am down working in El Paso every 3 weeks and will be taking business elsewhere..

If you are about real heavy weight lifting go for it. Gym manager is very strict and make sure that everything is working in proper manner, clean and hygienic. No nonsense gym

STAY AWAY!! Walked in on a random day to check this place out because it is close to where I live. I was a little weary of the $500 cancellation fee and said I'd only sign up if it was a month to month deal ($50/month) with no $500 cancellation fee. This was agreed to and memorialized in the membership agreement accordingly. The agreement was even initialed in TWO separate places by the employee who signed me up. A big "X" was written over the $500 cancellation fee paragraph in the membership agreement initialed by both me and the guy who signed me up.

So I go to pay my monthly membership fee today (which I thought was recurring and they'd charge my card automatically) and they try to charge me a $35 late fee. I ask if they can waive the late fee because I was under the impression they were charging my card automatically. Too bad so sad for me. I have to pay the late fee.

I end up requesting cancellation of my membership. I am THEN told I have to pay a $500 cancellation fee and will be referred to collections and the only way to cancel my membership is to send a written request via certified mail. I bring in the contract and the owner says the modifications are void because SHE didn't sign the agreement and I owe $500 if I cancel. What a scam!

I then look at my bank account and see a charge for $89, which is the monthly membership fee plus the "late fee." Now that they have the late fee they're happy to charge my card somehow. I never authorized this $89 charge as the late fee was in dispute (I can't find anything in the contract about late fees). I had to cancel my debit card and order a new one.

Anyway, I mailed my cancellation via certified mail today. It's almost Christmas (Dec. 23) and this place might as well be ran by the Grinch and Scrooge. I will likely have to deal with a legal action to enforce the $500 cancellation fee waiver initialed in two places by the Backstreet guy who signed me up. STAY AWAY from this gym!!

I will say: The gym itself, however, is great. All I wanted was to pay $50 a month and go to this gym to workout 2-3 times a week (without committing for a full year at $500 penalty to opt out). I didn't even go that much. I would gladly go back and change my review to 5 stars if the $50 month-to-month deal that was originally given to me and memorialized in writing was honored by this gym.
