I joined The Met a few months ago to try it out and overall it was an ok option for a downtown gym. I will say that for the price point, I didnβt find value in the amenities.
Lockers are not included and require an additional charge. I havenβt been part of a gym before that required a fee for a day use locker.
I joined strictly for the gym access. This review is not reflective of the tennis membership.
Pros: they have some Rogue and techno gym equipment and I never needed to wait for a machine. I would lift after work on weekdays and never saw more than 10 people around.
Cons: need to pay for a locker, locker room is carpet which I found kind of gross, also found several roaches in the locker room the one time I used the sauna in the womanβs locker room, cardio equipment is nothing special but they have a lot of it and it gets the job done.
There is a recovery room which I was told when you book it, youβre the only person who has access to it. That wasnβt true either. One time I was in there with the front door locked and someone, assuming the massage therapist, came in and proceeded to leave the door unlocked. When it was time for me to leave my recovery session, the door was unlocked and anyone couldβve walked in. It left me feeling uneasy because from what I was told when I joined, you have complete privacy in that area. The recovery room is an additional charge and although itβs a good price compared to places like Sudor, youβre better off joining Lifetime Downtown since the cold plunge is included and their locker rooms are much nicer.
After I joined I found it difficult to get in touch with people for cancellation/billing issues. Iβm still trying to get my final monthβs statement corrected. Everyone that works at The Met is very nice but it just takes a while to get answers/responses and I catch myself having to follow up many times.
I could never get the parking garage system set up to allow for easy entry and had to get a ticket validated every time. They can either give you a 2 hour or 4 hour ticket validation. One time I was at the gym for more than 2 hours, was only given a 2 hour validation ticket and when I left, I was prompted to pay the difference. When you call for help on the intercom system, they wonβt help you because the garage management is separate from the gym so I had to reverse, park again, and go up to the gym to get the 4 hour validation.
Now that I finished writing this review I remembered how frustrating being a member here was. The parking situation was really a hassle.

I have been a member of the Downtown Club for over 40 years. I have seen a lot of positive changes over the years. The staff is amazing and the group fitness classes offer a wide range of choices with amazing instructors. Plenty of cardio machines as well as weight machines and free weights. The food is amazing right down to the smoothies. Highly recommend you go by and take a tour of the facilities.

We've been members at The Met for over 20 years. Excellent and caring staff, favorite place to play tennis and take lessons, good food and facilities. Troy Toole is a superb tennis coach and I enjoy hitting with him twice weekly.

If you're considering joining The Downtown Met in Houston, do yourself a favor and donβt. This place is a complete disaster, hiding behind a nice location and slick marketing while delivering some of the worst customer service and member experience youβll find in the city.
The communication is abysmal β particularly from Sarah and Alicia, who are repeatedly unresponsive and unhelpful. Emails go ignored, questions are dodged, and if you do finally get a reply, itβs vague and often inaccurate. They donβt follow up, they donβt follow through, and unless you ask five or six times, you will not get any clear answers or confirmations. You are constantly left chasing them down just to get the most basic information.
To make matters worse, they will charge you whatever they want, whenever they want β without warning, explanation, or approval. You wonβt be notified of fees or changes unless you hunt them down to ask. If youβre offered a credit, promo, or adjustment β take a screenshot and save every email, because they certainly wonβt help you figure anything out after the fact. Once youβve signed up, youβre on your own.
Facility-wise, it's barely above average. Courts are often overbooked, the gym space is mediocre, and amenities are inconsistently maintained. You're paying premium rates for a second-rate experience across the board.
Bottom line: The Downtown Met is a textbook case of mismanagement and indifference. For a place that calls itself a βpremier fitness and tennis club,β it operates more like a poorly run pop-up gym with no structure or respect for its members. Look elsewhere β literally anywhere else would be a better use of your time and money.

I canβt believe I pay $300 for this place. Itβs lacking a lot of amenities. Their wet sauna has been broken for 2 years. This is a picture of their βfilterβ water machine. Is disgusting, looks dangerous. This is far from luxury. If I could give it zero stars I would.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Met Club for the first time and was fortunate enough to be given a tour by Maria, even on her day off. Maria's dedication and enthusiasm were immediately apparent as she warmly greeted us and expertly guided us through the facilities. She was incredibly knowledgeable about the clubβs amenities and services, answering all our questions with patience and a genuine smile. Her passion not only for her work but also for ensuring visitors feel welcome was truly commendable. Thanks to Maria, our experience was both informative and delightful. If youβre new to the club or considering joining, I highly recommend seeking out Maria for a tour; her exceptional service is a wonderful introduction to what the club has to offer!

I was a member for about 1.5 years and just recently left the MET. I love the tennis courts here and I have met some great players here, however, other than the 10 courts (all indoor) that are well maintained, it is just an overpriced (you pay $225+/month) average gym that tacks on a lot of extra fees.
There are "group" fitness classes that are taught by awesome instructors but are sometimes canceled last minute and/or with no notice. I put "group" in quotes because it's rare that a class has more than 4 or 5 people attending.
The locker rooms are old, there's no sauna and the steam room sometimes is under renovation for days or weeks at a time. In addition, the cold room in the men's lockerroom has been out of order since I joined 1.5 years ago. They did just recently install a sauna and cold plunge bath in a separate area but you have to pay $75/month extra to use those.
The staff are very friendly all around, but the management does very little to create a sense of community or networking opportunities other than the occasional holiday event (that you likely have to pay extra for and that comes with not enough food or not good food). They put up a new "calendar" of events every month, including the schedule of fitness classes, but it is rarely any different than other months.
Most importantly, it is near impossible to reserve a tennis court at an optimal time unless you reserve a court via the poorly designed phone app at an early morning time 7 days ahead of the court time (the earliest possible time you can reserve). In addition, when I pull the history of my monthly statements, every single one of them says invoice date 04/30/2023, which means you cannot get a subsidy from your employer if your employer offers it and asks for statements as proof.
The golf simulator doesn't work very well -- there must be somthing wrong with the screen.
Lastly, the basketball court is consistently taken over by pickleball players at the most popular times. Also, most of the basketballs don't have enough air in them for when you do have the opportunity to shoot around. There are also a lot of dead spots on the basketball court.
On the plus side, the food at the snack bar/cafe is fresh and good, the gym has 4 pelotons you can use, the gym is never too busy so you can be assured you wont have to wait to use equipment, and the staff make sure the equipment is clean.

Lots of equipment and amenities tend to break consistently and are only fixed with band-aids - the menβs steam room in particular is awesome and one of the gymβs main assets that keeps some OG members from leaving. However, like most other things, this thing breaks all the time and is shut down for extended periods. Management neglects it, of course, and tend to only give lazy answers about the issue. The same goes for the βcold roomβ in the menβs locker room. This amenity has been shut down for over 2 years now and still has an βout of orderβ sign on the door. Things like this occur as the membership rate continues to climbβ¦
They currently have staffing issues and the cafe shuts down nearly 2 hours before its intended closing time. Food is OK at best when it comes to their healthy options.
I have been a member for about 5 years now and I can assure you that it has always been like this. I will say that there are lots of great staff that Iβve built bonds with here as well as some great friends that are members. Iβm just not sure that management has the gyms best interest in mind. A Lifetime membership is a lot more enticing these days especially with BCBS insurance membership discount.

I was a member here for a year, of course I had to. I was because according to the contract you cannot cancel early and you will be fined. I became a member and then I was stuck . Except for a few employees at the reception and the cafe, who are very nice and kind, the management and customer service department is not very nice, and they just want to take money from you and have nothing to do with the quality of the club. Almost all the devices and equipments are very old and some of them are broken and it doesn't make sense to charge that much. They also increased the monthly charge without notice.I do not recommend it to anyone. For that much money, the service must be way much better which isnβt!!

We had a family reunion in Houston and wanted to organize a family ping-pong tournament - this gym was close. We overall enjoyed the facilities and felt the $25/person day pass was reasonably priced - my only reason for 4 and not 5 stars was that we absolutely couldn't figure out their hours through the Christmas holidays. Nothing announced on their outgoing message if you called, nothing on Google, their website, it was 100% obscure. Eventually we figured that if they're open they would answer calls, so if it goes to voice mail, they're probably not there...

Customer service from management is non-existent. Act like they are doing you a favor. Club is ok, cold room has never worked and steam room does half the time. Average club but for the price would go elsewhere. If you want tennis lifetime at the galleria is twice the club and service.
If you try to quit for lack of service they still take your 30 day notice dues and $500 loyalty fee

Been going to this gym for almost 2 years now. This place is top notch. Super friendly staff. Equipment top of the line. Best part is they have a great bball court with great runs throughout the week.
April 2023 update: Having to knock down my rating from 5 to 3 stars because they have decided to allow Pickleball to take over the basketball court. Such a shame.

Extremely overpriced for what it is. $200 for a gym without a locker, no pool, no hot sauna, no jacuzzi, cold plunge. When you add the locker and the petty credit card processing fee, you might as well join the brand new lifetime with better amenities and more locations.

I take tennis lessons and clinics here. Great alternative , they are indoors courts when weather is bad. The other is, parking garage is awful, people drive fast, they are ON your tail, and seems like everyone owns a truck in the garage. If I could give this place zero stars I would. First beware of the features you actually have access too - many are paid even with what used to be their high tier ONE membership! Extremely unresponsive to any requests for info or help even when you are there in person!
Over and above that, they slowly add random things onto your bill, including a fee for using a credit card. Then magically they lose the autopay credit card and will bug you incessantly (I was out of the country and told them that) and then cancel your membership and send collections after you anyways before sending you a method to pay (since they cancelled the account and you canβt use the online system).
The manager is MiA and unresponsive and their corporate offices are less than helpful! Absolutely abhorrent club! At least in Houston the only thing they are useful for is their parking location!
I guess the one star is a handful of their trainers and Cleveland
