I stopped through Eagle Pass for a few days and wanted to find a boxing gym where I would just want to ‘keep moving’ while I was on travel.
I was in for an unexpected surprise. I kept burrowing further into the mall to find this place.
The gated storefront was closed. When I saw one person on the inside; I approached and he came and chatted with me.
I told Paul, the owner, I wanted to workout for a few days. His ‘Yes’ felt like an invitation, where I joined the boxing group the next few days where I wasn’t just moving, I was being pushed by young people and the coach Nikko.
They were welcoming and raising the bar as they challenged me.
After 3 days, I’m a little sad I cannot stay longer to keep coming here. The staff and gym members go out their way to greet you.
The owner challenges the younger kids by keeping them engaged and holding them accountable to be disciplined; especially when their parents are present and watching. Lessons we can use even to this day.
The Fight Lab is obviously a staple in this community. I look forward to seeing Nikko on the national level, and I will think of the young champs like John and Robert when I need to push myself.
As Stitch Duran would say, “One More Round”
