An exceptional gym to train at. I’ve visited many facilities, and this one stands out as one of the best in terms of inclusivity and its genuine family-like atmosphere. The coaches are highly knowledgeable and bring real fight experience, creating an environment where everyone can grow and improve.

I wanted to check back on this club as it was my first muay thai experience and it was indeed a bad one. Since moving on from this gym I have had nothing but great experiences at other muay thai gyms. They have a lot of 5 star reviews not because they are actual professionals here, but because there are few muay thai gyms in the Austin area so most people don't know what a great gym is like. Glad to see some other people recently calling this place out for their unprofessionalism. The owner had a very bizarre attitude towards his customers when I went there. The owner is unnecessarily aggressive which is funny because he is in no way threatening. I once saw him blame a guy for using one of the gyms jump ropes and the poorly made jump rope fell apart and he shamed him for his own faulty equipment breaking down. This place is a joke

We came here for a bachelor party and had an amazing time. Our group had a wide range of experience, from pro fighters and coaches to people who had trained anywhere from zero to ten plus years, and everyone felt welcome. The coaches and the students were supportive from the moment we walked in. They gave us helpful tips on technique and made sure each person got attention at their level.
They also have some awesome merch. We all ended up grabbing something.
A big thank you to Coach Dave and Coach Cody for taking such great care of us. I can’t thank them enough for their hospitality. If you want to learn Muay Thai or just want a great training experience, this is the place.

As someone who has never done combat sports or any similar training, The Old Guard has been great for learning and fitness. From initial trial class to starting fundamentals I've felt comfortable and confident from both the coaches and students here. 10/10 would recommend

The Old Guard Thai Boxing Club is honestly one of the best places to learn Muay Thai. The gym is amazing — clean, well-equipped, and has everything you need for great training sessions. The coaches are all so kind, full of positive energy, and truly care about every student. They patiently teach you from the basics to the advanced techniques, and always make sure you understand each step. The people here make it even more special. My training partners are not just teammates — they’ve become real friends who support and motivate me every day. Every moment I’ve spent at The Old Guard is filled with happiness and growth. Training here with such wonderful coaches and friends is something I’m truly grateful for. From Bee, with love.

We dropped in for a class at The Old Guard during a bachelor party trip, and it ended up being one of the absolute highlights of our weekend. From the moment we reached out, Dave was incredibly responsive and welcoming, making it easy for our whole group to join in.
The coaches are world-class—knowledgeable, passionate, and genuinely invested in everyone on the mats. What really stood out was the sense of community; it’s rare to find a gym that feels this authentic, inclusive, and respectful of every skill level.
Our crew ranged from complete beginners to seasoned fighters, and every single person walked away with something valuable. Personally, with over 15 years in the game, multiple fights, and a background in coaching, I was looking for a gym that delivered a real, technical, and authentic experience—and The Old Guard absolutely exceeded expectations.
If you’re in Austin and want to train, learn, and be part of something real, this is the place. Highly recommended whether you’re new to the sport or a veteran looking to sharpen your craft.

Fantastic gym! The facilities are clean, and they have everything you need to get a great Muay Thai training session in.
Dave, Spencer, and the other coaches are all extremely knowledgeable in the art of Muay Thai. The gym has a great atmosphere, and everyone is very welcoming.
All of the coaches have amateur or professional fight experience, and several are still fighting regularly.
If you're interested in learning Muay Thai, or just looking for a new gym to continue your training, check out The Old Guard Thai Boxing Club.

Hi!
It’s the mother and daughter. You told a great story. Maybe your story were 50% truthful.
We did arrive 8 minutes before class. And were told move to the couch to sign the waiver form. We asked what emailed were sent to us. I went searching for the 10/13/2025 email you may have sent to us. I saw three emails with that date and email 1- Was a receipt. Email 2&3 were confirmation for our appointments . We couldn’t find the email for the waiver and I showed you the emails I had. You try to send it again. Again, I didn’t get a waiver email. You then proceeded to let me sign the waiver on your computer.
I did ask you what was the difference between Muay Thai and Jujitsu. You gave me maybe a 30 seconds response. And did not offer anymore to that. I actually thought you were dismissive to us.
You lead us to our trainer and there was no introduction to our trainer. As soon as I saw the trainer, I apologize for being late. And he came back with “Yea, you guys are very late”
He probably was not happy that we started late. There was minimal communication between us and our trainer. Not once did he cracked a joke.
We got to training, and we admit we didn’t know what we were walking into. We did jump ropes, push ups, and sit ups at a rapid pace. After a couple of rounds, my daughter was thirsty. As she was walking towards the water bottle, she was told no, it’s not break yet. So we respectfully went back to training. No arguments or complaining. We were very mindful to be respectful towards our trainer.
I can see she was a bit overwhelmed, I told her to just do it at her own pace. I’m sure our trainer heard us. She tried for a bit more and I can tell she was not enjoying it. Our trainer suggested we can stop if we wanted to. My daughter decided to stop training, but I wanted to continue. I continued until I I was starting to feel sick and told our trainer I feel like I’m going to throw up. So we stopped training. When we were done, our trainer said, “ I don’t think y’all know what y’all signed up for” and yes I did tell him that my husband signed us up for it. I think he was relieved I decided to stop training.
My husband spoke very highly of you guys when he booked us with you guys. He was hyping us up and pumping us up for the beginners class.
This is a quote from your Trial class.
“First, come in ready to have a good time learning something new. Remember, everyone started where you are starting and our coaches design your intro class with that in mind, taking you through the basics and providing you with a fun intro into Thai Boxing. The hardest part about starting is walking through the door. Once you’re in, we’ll take it from there.”
Proper stance, kicks, knees, elbows, and boxing basics will be covered. Don't be late.
It’s unfortunate that my daughter and I didn’t enjoy Muay Thai. As you mentioned, we were overwhelmed, but kept going at the same pace.We did leave feeling defeated and frustrated. My daughter came home and told him how it went. From her experience, it wasn’t great. And as a father, I’m sure it’s not a great feeling knowing he sent her there and didn’t she didn’t enjoy it. He also was not happy that she wasn’t able to get water break when she felt like she needed it.
And you were informed that she is 16 and a beginner. We assumed that we will be introduce to the sport at a pace we could handle. But, that’s our fault to assume.
But that snarky reply was uncalled for. We told him our experience and it wasn’t great. We will probably never try Muay Thai again. We all can be kind to each other even if we disagree.
I am happy that you guys have a good following that will back y’all. I’m sure you guys are great at what you do. It was unfortunate it wasn’t for us.

My wife and daughter just finished a trial session we thought was for beginners did not have a good experience. From the front desk requesting a waiver we never received to the trainer who wouldn’t allow my daughter to drink water. She’s in tears right now talking to me about it and I’m extremely unhappy about it. I’m having a hard time believing all these 5 star reviews.
Would not recommend.
________________
As I can't respond to your response, I'll just edit here.
Dad in fact did his due diligence. Are you saying your mission statement and glowing reviews are false? Not only did I try contacting your facility prior to signing them up, I did it afterwards as well as I wanted to get more information. Here's a novel idea, pick up the phone. I explained to them both prior to coming that while it may not be a mutual fit for both parties(I know how intense this type of training came be), at least mom and daughter could still have some fun and spend some quality time together. I was wrong.
Ask yourself this? What exactly do we have to gain by making that claim regarding your trainer? Nothing. That said, he certainly should deny that. That's a terrible look. I can respect an owner defending his trainer but that doesn't mean what we said was untrue.
Mocking my daughter for being in tears shows your true character. Oooof. You should have left that out. Thanks for validating their experience there. Before you have google remove the review(I understand the gaming of the review system), hopefully you can take something away from this and improve the experiences for others who may have interest in your gym.

I’ve been around Muay Thai for a decade (literally 10 years) because of my husband, but would always try out the gyms he was training at and never really got into it. I was more of a yoga gal. We moved to Austin a few years ago and he begged me give Muay Thai one more shot and try this new gym. I really didn’t want to go, but I’m so glad I gave it another shot. Ended up falling in love with the sport and the community. For such a violent sport, Coach Dave, Tiff and the other coaches make it a point to foster a safe, inclusive training environment. The amount of females that train here is a testament to that, and so is the energy you feel in the room every class. Happiest place on earth, some of us call it!
If you want to be surrounded by good vibes and Muay Thai fans who want to not just level up themselves, but help each other level up in the sport in an ego-free zone, come join the club! This is also the best place to train at if you want to get better at clinch! 💥 Oh and coach feeds us bomb ass tacos once a month every first Saturday 🥹❤️

If you want to learn legit Muay Thai in a community of amazing people this is the spot for you.
This was my home away from home for many years before I moved out of the area. It still holds a spot in my heart.
I have never had nor have found another gym like it. Everyone is there to level each other up.

The Old Guard is a perfect gym for beginners or anyone with any level of Muay Thai experience. They even Email you a waiver before your trail class. The trainers let you drink water whenever you need to along with giving breaks in-between segments. You might tear up from all the hard work you put in. It’s because of how encouraging the community is. Everyone’s constantly working to meet each other at their skill level & improve them to their highest potential.

No better place in the world, dang sure not Austin. I dropped in for a class at this Muay Thai gym because my partner has been training here, and I’m so glad I did! The energy in the gym is fantastic. Coming from years of boxing and mixed martial arts, I can tell these coaches really know their stuff.
They paired us appropriately for training and demonstrated impressive techniques. I learned so much in just an hour! The atmosphere is welcoming and supportive, making it easy to feel right at home. I’m thrilled my partner chose this gym—she's definitely getting the support she needs here! She might actually kick better than me since she started… I’m a little scared!

This is a special Muay Thai gym in Austin. Whether you’re brand new and just want to learn more about the beautiful sport of Muay Thai or you’re looking to compete, there’s no other place in Austin that compares. The gym’s only been around for about three years, but I’ve trained all over the world and what they’ve built here is next level. They’ve got amateurs competing at the national level and pros who’ve represented Team USA internationally.
What blows me away is how fast beginners improve here. The way Dave and the coaches built the program lets you grow, stay safe, and still have fun with it. The energy is great — everyone pushes each other and it really feels like a family. And yeah… they make tacos for the club once a month.

I've been training at this Muay Thai gym for over a year, and I can confidently say it’s the best in Austin! The trainers here are exceptional—they genuinely care about each student's progress and pay meticulous attention to detail. Even in packed classes, they take the time to offer individual guidance, which has greatly helped me refine my technique.
The community is incredibly supportive, creating a positive and motivating environment that makes learning enjoyable. Whether you're a beginner or looking to advance your skills, this gym is the place to be. Highly recommend!

I’ve been training at this gym for just over a year now and I’ve loved every minute of it. I had never done combat sports and was a bit overwhelmed in the beginning, but the feelings of uncertainty were immediately squashed once I took my first class. I have never felt more welcomed into a new environment, and that feeling remains even a year later. The coaches are kind, considerate, funny, and supportive. I’ve learned so much during my time here, not only in the way of Muay Thai but about myself as well. It is no small thing to feel safe and accepted, especially at a gym where you’re inexperienced with the sport. My teammates and coaches are the absolute best people around and ATX is lucky to have a gym this special. As long as you’re willing to learn and leave your ego at the door, you will have fun and be challenged in the best way. There’s no place like TOGTBC!

One of the coolest gyms around. The coaches are very interested in helping people learn and are passionate about what they do. From your first trial class they focus on fundamental techniques to set you up for success.
This is an absolutely great sport, and requires a lot of physical demand, but you get out of it what you put in. The owners really care about your training and facilities as well. Over my years of training things have constantly shown this, from new bag holders, to new mats, to new pads. All to make sure everyone can train safely and enjoy their workouts. The people here are super chill too, one of the gym mottos don’t be a dick and it shows that people take this to heart by always helping the new people learn and not having a big ego. The amount stress relief I get from coming here keeps me going. I truly love The Old Guard and its people.
Oh also taco Saturday’s are awesome..

Dropped in for a class while I was in town, and so glad I did. TOG is truly five stars. The instructor and students were very welcoming and encouraging. The facility is great - clean, plenty of space, and good equipment. The class was structured in a way that I got a fantastic workout and the ability to focus on technique. It's exactly what you would want from a Muay Thai gym.

Five months ago I saw a group of people wearing some pretty fancy shorts standing outside a small building decorated in cool traditional tattoo style signs and I thought... Well, what's going on over here?
Shortly after I booked a trial class and was hooked immediately. These days I have my own growing collection of fancy shorts and take great joy in training with hands down some of the best people in Austin.
The coaches, the students, the fighters, the gym... What more can I say? You don't get almost 200 reviews and keep a perfect 5 star score without doing things really right. The Old Guard and Muay Thai changed my life. I love it here.
Buy a ticket, take the ride, and stay whimsical. You won't regret it.

Had the chance the stop in and train on a work trip to Austin and couldn’t have found a better gym. You never know what to expect dropping in and the TOG team welcomed me with open arms. Coach Dave is the man and put us through some progressive combos, pad work, and some friendly ab conditioning to finish things off. Had the chance to do some great high level play sparring too where I wasn’t even worried that I didn’t bring my mouthpiece (obv not recommended). All in all- awesome crew, great technique, and zero ego. Not sure what else you could ask for. Looking forward to training again on my next visit! And next time making it for pancakes.

What can I say about this gym??? This gym is pure magic, filled with sweat, and yells from many of gym goers, there may also be some tears;from laughter unless you got hit in the face by some pads. Which is a learning moment... trust me I would know. I didnt come from a gym or workout background, i found this place because i hurt my back, i was determined to go big or go home. What i didn't know is that i found my home, been here nine months and havent left. I do my best and train nearly everyday. The coaches are amazing they actually care, yes this is a business but they don't see you as a dollar sign; they actually coach you; they will help you as much as you help yourself. They yell, scream, and curse and it's always an amazing moment. From the grumpy faces, mumbles, groans and weird looks it's nothing short of amazing. Each coach can personally train you which is something beginners and seasoned goers should take advantage of, each coach has their own rates so ask. Coach Dave does not like negative self talk, you being there and doing your best is all he asks for. I'm in awe of every woman that trains and coaches at the gym, they are strong and powerful individuals. They have somehow managed to gather people who come from different backgrounds and careers where everyone can offer advice or help you with something, or hit you repeatedly either way it's an honor. This gym tells you, keep your hands up, keep going, have joy in your hearts, go hard, dont be jerk and stay hydrated. The amount of time and energy poured into this gym is just amazing and so magical.
Thank you Coaches Dave,Tiffany,Spencer Danny, cody, jarrod, chase, Rachel,Crystal, and Michal. Thank you for all you do.

TOG is a gem in this city that is constantly growing and changing. I had the opportunity to walk into this gym at a time when the bags were mounted on the walls and the ring was open space for shadow boxing. I would stay late to help cut rags for the heavy bag and talk to Dave. Exchange stories of shows we moshed at. Our favorite Beastie Boy record. The vision of the gym. (I was really staying late because I was dizzy and had body cramps for being so out of shape).
At the time I did not know the impact TOG would have on my life. To see how it has grown and matured is what is special about TOG. It is truly a place for all walks of life. From the hip to the misfit, the young to the old, the athlete to the out of shape midlife soon to be dad. The more you put into Muay Thai the more you get out of it. It is a forever morphing challenge that will affect you to the core. It will challenge the mind and the heart more than the body if you let it. TOG taught me this and I am forever thankful. I am forever thankful of the knowledge that was willingly passed down from all the coaches at TOG who are just happy to see someone pumped to tap into their world.
TOG is a gym, but beyond the gym represents a release of the deeper challenges we all walk through in life, you just have to be willing to take it to that point.

Finally trained at The Old Guard after having my eyes on it for a while, and I’m so glad I did! Trying a new gym can be intimidating, but everyone was super welcoming from the moment I walked in. The space has great energy: relaxed, fun, and full of people who train hard and support each other.
I appreciated Coach Spencer and Coach Dave’s approach to teaching. They watch closely, give personalized feedback, and make clear and constructive corrections. And are really fun to be around!
What stands out the most to me is the sense of community. As a woman walking into a combat sports gym, that feeling of safety and inclusion makes all the difference, and The Old Guard absolutely nails it. Whether you’re brand new to Muay Thai, or you’ve got experience in the sport, this is a place where you’ll feel encouraged and challenged. Super excited to keep training here!

Came to Austin for a month and have been incredibly thrilled and grateful to have found The Old Guard. I've been training for under a year and have found the coaching staff to be great at helping me better my Muay Thai. I also convinced two of my friends to join and they've been having a great time learning the sport.
Facility is great, and I really like how the classes are structured to get you in shape and focus on technique. If I had more time I would have loved to dedicate more time to the gym and participate in some of the more advanced classes they had. Next time!
If you're looking to train or start learning Muay Thai, there's no place in Austin I'd recommend more. Hell, maybe even fly out to train with them.

I started training here in November and even though I only make it in twice a week because of my tight schedule, I’ve improved a lot more than I expected. I’ve mainly worked with Spencer and Dave (the owner). Spencer’s a beast—I admire his style and energy, and he pushes me every time I train. Dave really stands out in how he teaches—he breaks things down in a way that just clicks. I still have a long way to go, but my heart’s in it, and this gym has been a huge part of my growth. Also I want to add I’ve been to other gyms that felt more like cardio workout classes, but this place is legit. Real technique, real training, and real growth.

No gimmicks, no fluff, no BS just straight training with great people that are patient and will push you. Badass gym and happy to be a part of it.

TOGTBC is a special place that has become very dear to me. It’s one of those rare places that espouses community, family, respect, tolerance and is serious about every one of those pillars. One of those places that once you come and see, you’ll understand too.
For the better part of a decade now, I haven’t lived in any one city for more than 2 years before I picked up and kept it pushing. Old Guard, all the coaches, all the funny and diverse people are what made Austin feel like home just as I was in the midst of planning for another destination. I couldn’t be more grateful to have stumbled upon this community, this family, that made this city a place I feel like I can firmly plant my feet.
I’m the best version of myself when I’m training. Even when I’m dog tired after a day of work (industrial construction), I still feel that inner pull every day to go train now; and I know all I need to do is get my feet through the door with willingness to grow, and the coaches, the community, the energy will do the rest. Whether you are looking to train for fun/fitness, want to fight, or looking to change your life, come. There is a place for you here.
Love to each and every one my Old Guard family ❤️

Can’t recommend old guard enough. I’ve only been here for a month but already feel like I’ve been here for a year. The coaches and community are super welcoming and always happy to help you work on your game. If you’re new to Muay Thai, you’re going to be humbled. If you’re not new… you’re probably still going to be humbled. But I mean that in the best way. You’re going to put in some serious work when you start training here. As someone who grew up playing team sports, I feel that same kind of team energy at this gym. I was anxious to join a Muay Thai gym and thought I’d be intimidated that I wouldn’t gel into the group with no prior martial arts experience at all.
But what I found instead was the most welcoming and friendly killers. Everyone is always eager to share their tips and technique pointers and to push each other to become better.
There’s always killer tunes on the jukebox and lots of club get-togethers to build the sense of community that is hard to find these days.
Love the gym, the coaches care about your progress, and whether you’re looking to fight professionally, train as a hobby or for fitness, I would give it a try.

It is always scary to train somewhere new, but when I traveled to ATX for work, the Old Guard crew made me feel right at home. They broke things down so that all levels could grasp the concepts, and the class was challenging enough for any skill level. Come as you are, and get some great work in. Thank you for the hospitality. 🙏🏻

The Old Guard is a spectacular place to learn Muay Thai. The gym is unassuming, absent of egos, and filled with diverse people dedicated to learning. It also has those little quirks that remind you of why people love Austin so much, like a gym owner who cooks up for the community once a month after training.
My time was short-lived but I hope TOGTBC and I cross paths again. I’m sure I’ll be better for it.
If you’re looking for a sign to give this place a shot - let this be it!! Make that leap and be ready for the friendliest butt-whoopin you can imagine.

Ramon Dekkers (look him up!) was the baddest man on the planet. Who’s the second baddest person on the planet? Could be you. The first step to getting there is walking through this door.
I first started coming to Old Guard on a drop-in basis, after having already done muay Thai for several years. Even as a drop-in, everyone made me feel like part of their community. I’ve since officially joined, and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself. Old Guard has a mix of everyone from hobbyists looking to get in shape to fighters making a name for themselves in the sport, training together in a safe, supportive environment without the judgment or egos. We just come together and make each other a little bit better each day. Whether you’re brand new to the art or a seasoned nak muay, there’s a place for you in our community. Come join us and see what you’re made of.
Our door is always open.

When I say i literally can’t say enough great things about the Old guard I’m not exaggerating, from the coaches to the community that Dave and Tiffany have built is truly something special I walked into the Old guard a year ago not knowing anything about muaythai at all and I simply fell in love, im a big believer of in order to be good at anything you have to be great at the basics and that’s exactly why I chose the Old guard to be my home because this is not a gym that will just throw you in and tell you to “figure it out” they’re with you every step of the way doesn’t matter if it’s your first day or if you’ve been doing muaythai for years they dedicate everything to you getting better every day, not only that the members that you train with are simply amazing all smiles and great vibes everyone is helpful and committed to achieving their goals just like you. Since I’ve started, muaythai is now the highlight of my daily life and something I look forward to but doing muaythai at the Old guard makes the journey 10x better.

Absolutely fantastic place to train. All of the coaches are knowledgeable and go out of their way to be helpful.
There’s a great mix of all levels at the gym as well. You’ll have a great experience whether you’re just starting to train or already have been for years. This translates to the sparring culture as well - no egos, just fun while trying hard
One of my favorite parts of this gym is how thoughtful they are about the curriculum. Everything they have you do is well thought out and intentional. each week builds off the last in a way that’s very rewarding on top of being very effective
I can’t think of a single negative thing to say about this place, the staff, or the community. They also have some absolutely killer merch!

The Old Guard has truly helped me fall back in love with Muay Thai. This is hands down my favorite gym, and I've had the privilege of training in many different countries while learning this craft. The Old Guard Thai Boxing Club (yes, you say the whole thing) has been nothing short of incredible. The community that has been built here is one of the best you can find within combat sports (I've been to many gyms over 20 years). The instruction is absolutely top tier, incredibly experienced and qualified coaches, great equipment, with a clean (sanitized and hygienic) training space. I have been fortunate to be apart of this community since July of 2022, and I can't speak highly enough of TOGTBC. Please, do yourself a favor, go check out a class; sign up for a trial class if you are new to Muay Thai (or striking arts in general), or message the club directly if you are an experienced practitioner and see if it is a good fit for you. This is a special place, it won't take long before you see that.

A friend of mine recommended me Old Guard thai Boxing while she was out in California and told me if I were ever in Austin to come check this place out. I come from a traditional Muay Thai gym and I know it’s hard to find gyms close to it but this place right here had very friendly and welcoming people and will take the time to you teach you. The owner/head coach Dave thank you for welcoming me with open arms and allowing me to train here as much as I did while I was out on vacation. Shout to Coach Spencer for also welcoming me the first day at the gym and make it a very friendly and dope experience. To all the coaches thank you for all your kind words and open arms. This place is great and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a Muay Thai gym! You won’t be disappointed.

I joined Old Guard Thai Boxing Club bc my little brother was training here and I had no idea that this gym (and my brother) were so good. The coaches are all fantastic, high level folks and eager to pass on knowledge about Muay Thai. They care about your development and they push you to be better.
The head coach and owner, Dave, has built a wonderful community here and this gym has been a home away from home. I highly recommend this gym to anyone interested in Muay Thai, from beginner level all the way to serious competitor folks.

These guys are the real deal, authentic Thai style and great conditioning. I'm a competition fighter visiting from Sacramento and needed a good place to train during my stay. The owner, coaches, and students are all great people who have been extremely friendly/welcoming. The technique they teach is on point and fundamentally solid. For all my fighters out there looking for a high level gym or anybody looking to get started I highly recommend this spot. Came to Old Guard as a drop in student passing through Austin. As someone just passing through I wasn’t expecting to get much or any coaching, but Dave really impressed me with the attention I received. It was clear to me Dave enjoys his work. If you are looking to train Muay Thai specifically and not kickboxing or MMA striking in disguise then this is your go-to gym. Dave, Spencer and all of the unmentioned coaches do a phenomenal job with teaching/correcting regardless whether you have prior experience or not. I personally have never met so many amazing people under the same roof of any establishment ever as everybody is super chill. More importantly they will have you do clinch work often as you will need that for sure in Muay Thai.

If you're in Austin and want to train Muay Thai, look no further—Old Guard is the place to be.
As an out-of-towner visiting ATX for work, I was looking for a gym to continue my training without any interruptions. After researching a few places online, I settled on wanting to check out the Old Guard, and was so glad I did. Reaching out via email, I got a lightning quick response from the owner, Dave. He mentioned the Friday classes were 'tough, but fun' and would allow me to drop in. I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The team at Old Guard knows their stuff and has serious Muay Thai credentials.
The gym itself was super clean, well-equipped, and had everything you could need. Everyone in the class was welcoming and friendly—no egos here. Bonus points for the Taylor Swift shrine, which added a fun, lighthearted touch to the space. It was a reminder that while you're there to work hard, you can still enjoy yourself. Hoping its not too long before I get the chance to visit again!
Shout out to Coach Spencer—he not only knows his stuff, but is also just a super cool dude.

If you're looking for an authentic Muay Thai experience, I highly, highly recommend The Old Guard Thai Boxing Club! I am visiting Austin for work at the date of this review, and I was looking for a pure Muay Thai gym that wasn't Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) based. I have 16 months of Muay Thai experience before hand at The Little Giant Muay Thai over in Falls Church, VA, which is a suburb of Washington, D.C. Also, as a fun tidbit about myself, I began my Muay Thai journey over in Bangkok, Thailand on a whim after learning from a 1990s Golden Age Muay Thai Lumpinee Champion that taught a group private at my visiting grad school that was studying abroad in Thailand in April 2023. After taking Muay Thai classes from many traditional Muay Thai nakmuays, my standards for an authentic Muay Thai gym experience is incredibly high.
Coach Dave absolutely did not disappoint at all. Fundamentals Classes are exactly what it sounds like: bagwork, shadow boxing, and jump ropes. Coach Dave makes sure to monitor all of his students and help each of us correct mistakes early on that he sees. Intermediate (Padwork) Classes are great as well. You partner up with a classmate and take turns holding the pads & striking as well. Coach Dave continues to guide his students to make sure each of us are progressing and improving our techniques with a mixture of simple strikes, complex combinations, clinch work, and varying up strikes at the head & body.
I am hoping to return for one more day of Fundamentals and Intermediate Classes later this week if my work schedule permits.
Many thanks again Coach Dave and the staff that I met at The Old Guard Thai Boxing Club. You all are incredibly kind and made me feel welcomed with your hospitality. I'll never forget this experience. If you are local to Austin and interested in trying out Muay Thai at the most authentic level, I highly recommend this place. If you have Muay Thai experience like me, regardless of level, and are either local to Austin or visiting the area, you truly cannot go wrong training at The Old Guard Thai Boxing Club.

If you're looking for the best Muay Thai gym in Austin, Texas, you've found it! It's a welcoming environment to learn authentic Muay Thai, whether you're a total beginner or an experienced Nak Muay. The Old Guard Thai Boxing Club is a bright, clean, spacious Thai Boxing gym that's professionally run. Those new to the art of eight limbs are welcomed with extra attention, unlike many big box kickboxing studios where people aren't given enough attention and just practice with bad form for months or sometimes years. I appreciated how diverse and friendly the members and staff were on my first visit.
I was visiting from out of town at a business conference and did a drop in class; I was welcomed into their more experienced pad rounds class and found the combinations we worked on to reflect real life experience from competing in the ring. Even if you're only a beginner or doing it for fitness or fun, it's important to train with technically proficient coaches to learn correct technique to avoid injury - repeatedly doing it wrong at cardio kickboxing gyms often causes repetitive use injuries.
The other thing that attracted me to The Old Guard is they have brought in world class Thai fighters such as Stamp Fairtex, Supergirl Jaroonsak, and I believe Ognjen Topic will be coming this Fall 2024. This is the sign of a gym that invests in elevating the instructional quality for their fighters, coaches, and recreational members. Thanks for the hospitality!

I would 10/10 recommend folks in the austin area check out The Old Guard Thai Boxing Gym. I came down from New York for a few days, and wanted to keep training while on vacation, and everyone at the gym, from the coaches to the students were so open and welcoming. The coaches have a wealth of knowledge, and are truly dedicated to educating and training people in the art of muay thai. Most of the coaches are active fighters, and their high fight IQs show in how they coach. Whether you're an experienced fighter and just want to explore new gyms and environments to train in, or whether you have never done muay thai or a martial arts before and want to learn the art or get some fun exercise in, I would highly recommend checking out this gym. This is by far the best striking gym in Austin. The coaches will accommodate all levels from beginners, hobbyists, pro's, and people who are eventually looking to fight. Several of the coaches and head coach are active fighters. Which is rare and a huge plus as the advanced level training will ramp up during competition periods. The staff and customers are friendly and encouraging to meet your training goals. Whether you are looking for fitness training, self defense, or fighter training this is the gym to go to. I recently visited The Old Guard Thai Boxing Club and I must say, it was an incredibly rewarding experience. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a sense of professionalism and dedication that permeates every aspect of this establishment.
The coaches at The Old Guard are truly top-notch. Their expertise is evident not just in their technical proficiency but also in their ability to inspire and motivate. They take the time to understand each student's goals and tailor their instruction accordingly, ensuring your session feels personalized and effective.
The atmosphere here is another standout feature. It doesn’t seem to be just a gym, but rather a community of like-minded individuals who share a passion for Muay Thai. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned practitioner, everyone is supportive and encouraging, creating a positive environment that makes you want to push yourself further and return for more.
What impressed me most is the emphasis on progress and improvement. The coaches at TOGTBC don't just teach techniques; they instill discipline and a strong work ethic, which was evident as I learned of other members’ stories. They push you to your limits while ensuring that you train safely and effectively.

I can’t fully express how amazing Old Guard is.
The club was recommended to me by multiple friends and I couldn’t be more thankful for that.
Whether you’re a complete beginner with zero martial arts experience or a seasoned fighter looking for a solid community to train with - Old Guard is by far the best place in Austin.
The community is among the most welcoming and supportive I’ve encountered anywhere (in or out of martial arts).
Old Guard’s members are all dedicated to creating a space built on respect and collaboration where you can feel confident in each and every person you train with - and it shows from the moment you walk in to the club.
I joined Old Guard as a complete novice and was blown away by the passion the coaches and members have for Muay Thai as well as the community’s focus on lifting one another up.
The coaches are incredibly skilled, patient and adept at explaining even the most complex parts of Muay Thai.
Just as important - every club member helps their training partners improve, offering their own insights born from their personal journeys.
I learn and grow from every class I attend and am sometimes blown away by how much I’ve improved in my ~9 months at Old Guard.
TL:DR
Whether you're brand new to martial arts or a veteran fighter, Old Guard is a community founded on respect and trust where you can learn no nonsense Muay Thai from some incredibly skilled and welcoming people.
I found more than a boxing club at Old Guard, I found a community of incredible, well meaning people who support each other in a way I’ve seldom seen anywhere else.
Old Guard embodies the things every boxing club (and the martial arts industry as a whole) should aspire for.

There are so many great Muay Thai gyms in Austin but The Old Guard really stands apart from them all.
Dave and the rest of the coaches have great experience and are incredibly passionate about the sport. Every week the training agenda is carefully curated and focused on a specific theme. They also touch on fundamental components of Muay Thai (rhythm, clinch, pad holding, etc) that are often not covered in other gyms.
Finally, the community here is compromised of hobbyists, aspiring fighters, & amateur/pro competitors. Despite the diverse crowd everyone is very respectful, kind, and supportive training partners. It’s genuinely gratifying to see everyone improve week over week.
They also have the coolest merch I’ve ever seen from a gym.

Thai-style training right in Austin, TX! The coaches run excellent classes that vary between technique work (drills, sparring), padwork, bagwork, and clinching. It was a relief to see a gym in the US allot time to focus on the clinch, which is not something I see often for US Muay Thai.
The owners and coaches are solid people, and they have a set of values that they stick with. This means any jerks with huge egos that come in or people that make others feel unsafe quickly see their way out the door and are not welcome back.

I would highly suggest this gym to anyone who is looking to train Muay Thai in Austin.
Dave and Tiffany have cultivated a wonderful vibe in the gym where you can learn and be playful, but also get really solid training in.
The culture of the gym has attracted other kind, talented, and hard working individuals who range in terms of Muay Thai experience, but who are all wiling to share what knowledge they have.
During class the coaches are attentive to all levels, not just the people who are competing.
For anyone new, they partner you with a coach and at most one other person for your first session where they show you the basics. I really appreciated this because it made it feel way more approachable to then join the main classes.
There are also a bunch of women at varying skill levels at the gym who are all delightful to train with.

This is it. This is your sign. This is THE "gym" you're looking for. Only it's not just a gym, it's more. You WILL learn Muay Thai here, and you may just grow as a human as well. All skill levels are welcome, and no martial arts background is needed. From the moment you walk through the door for your first trial, you'll know immediately, that you made a great decision. The Coaches are exceptional at teaching you the discipline of Muay Thai. If you have trained at another gym, you'll notice there is a distinct difference at this gem. There's attention to detail, and there's an interest, not only from the Coaches, but from the community of others that invest their time here. Give it a shot, make the call...you never know.

Been missing the club like crazy due to a recent ankle injury, but figured what better time to sit down and write a review! I was recommended to The OG by another member and joined with the mindset of trying something new and staying fit. In the few months I've been involved, this amazing club and sport has evolved into something so much more to me. Consistently showing up to class, even though it was only a couple times a week, has had a tremendous impact on not only my physical health, but also my mental fortitude and mindset. There is a community at The OG that I haven't felt in other martial arts clubs that make this place so special - everyone genuinely wants to show up for themselves and each other - something you can feel the moment you step into the gym. Whether you've been at it for a while or you're a complete newbie, there's always something to learn in this sport - something that is evident from the effort the coaches take to train members and their constant desire to improve. So, if you're thinking of joining The OG or just want to try it out I highly recommend! You won't regret it ;)

The old guard created a gym where no matter your expertise level or how far you want to take the sport - you get a fantastic and unique Muay Thai experience that you can’t find anywhere else.
Despite me being a large strength athlete without any aspirations of being a pro fighter - I got personalized feedback from their experienced coaches every single class. Many MT gyms you simply go to workout and check the box - here you train, you improve the science and the art.
The coaches are seasoned fighters with a myriad of experience, they humbly approach you as a coach not a rival. They are charismatic, personable and take a genuine interest in anyone who commits to the process. They do an excellent job of creating a safe learning environment for everyone - one of the awesome things here is the sparring culture is designed for you to learn and not just get beat on until you figure it out, and it’s something the coaches believe in.
I was a member since day one and it’s been amazing to see how this gym has taken off - I’ve had to move far away but I will always try to come by - thank you old guard for all the amazing work!

Absolutely love TOGTBC, the atmosphere is incredibly friendly and everyone from the coaches to the members are incredibly welcoming, no matter what your experience level may be. However, don’t be lulled by the great culture, the coaches do a great job making sure everyone pushes themselves and strives for continuous improvement. I have really enjoyed my time here at The Old Guard and highly recommend anyone thinking of going for their first class to just take the plunge and do it. You won’t regret it! I was a bit nervous when I started, mainly due to my lack of experience. However, a co-worker of mine highly recommended the Old Guard, so I felt compelled to give it a shot, I’m glad I did.
The team of coaches at the Old Guard are amazing and are truly passionate about what they do. Their expertise is evident, and they have a remarkable ability to guide and instruct while noticing your improvement and trouble areas. Notably, they are patient when it comes to correcting mistakes and teaching beginners. What truly sets them apart is their skill in pushing you beyond your limits without overwhelming you.
Beyond the coaching, everyone, regardless of their skill level, is met with friendliness, support, and an all-encompassing sense of belonging. it’s good to be a part of a community of like-minded people who strive to become better.

I have been going to the Old Guard for close to 3 months now. Absolutely love this gym and community. As a sports massage therapist and neuroscience student I was quite hesitant about doing such an intense sport (afraid of injuries and such). However, Coach Dave is extremely keen on keeping us injury free while working as hard as possible.
If you are thinking about coming in for your first class, do it. You'll have no regrets. Train Muay Thai, live forever.

I have been lifting for a year and wanted get more active with my body, also I don’t like doing cardio on treadmills or bikes, so I wanted to give it a try to muay thai. Not I just do cardio here, I also learn something while I burn calories! Lol. It’s a pretty cool and nice gym. Coaches are great and everyone is super friendly. Coaches help you get better everyday and push your body to it’s limits, which is what I like the most. I just finished my first month and looking forward to next months! I came across The Old Guard Thai Boxing gym serendipitously through word of mouth at another local gym, and two weeks in, this community has really reinvigorated my interest in Muay Thai. I’ve trained boxing and kickboxing on and off for close to a decade, and after learning about The Old Guard being nearby me, it peaked my interest and was time for me to shake off a lot of rust.
The coaching staff in this gym really are at the pinnacle of their craft. They do not cut corners on fundamentals, they actively engage with all members (new and veteran) during training, and the breadth of knowledge and conditioning shows on the members at this gym. All the coaches really have a passion to see members excel and will take time to answer any questions and help with form. Everyone I’ve seen come through is taken care of here, from the novice to the experienced drop in from out of town.
The Old Guard is an amazing gym for anyone ranging from newcomers just wanting to learn a bit of self-defense, hobbyists who enjoy a challenging workout, and athletes who aspire to fight. The only thing they really ask for is to come in and put the work. This is a ‘work hard, play hard’ community who is willing to lift you up no matter what experience you have. The camraderie they’ve built here is pretty exceptional.

There are three factors that set The Old Guard apart from other martial arts gyms: the deep expertise of the coaches, the dedication to each athlete’s journey, and the sheer heart and passion evident in every session.
Every gym has expertise, but all the coaches: Dave, Spencer, Michal, Cody, Simon, and guest coaches, bring not only excellent knowledge of the sport but also extensive personal histories and unique strengths. They live and breathe the sport of Muay Thai and it is not just a side job for them. The focus on strong fundamentals and a complete skill set is very strong.
The coaches at the OG are personally invested in each athlete’s development. Be ready to be on a first basis with the coaches and see their happiness when you show up consistently and improve, and also their disappointment if you are missing your potential! They are meeting athletes at many stages of their journey- whether it was getting into shape from years of a desk job and hindrance from previous injuries for me, or training for competition like others here. Do not fear if you don’t feel like you’re strong enough yet; everyone starts somewhere.
Lastly, the heart and passion are constantly evident. I trained at a different gym for 18 months and never met the owner. Head coach and owner Dave is present at every practice. He chooses to forgo time off to make sure the attendees are receiving a top level of attention and also to constantly develop the coaches. Coaching is hard and nobody is perfect. But I can say with absolute certainty that Dave and the other coaches care about everyone here and have shown time and time again that they are willing to go the extra mile for the people in the OG family!
What are you waiting for????!

I started going the The Old Guard Thai Boxing Club a few months ago after getting bored with my normal weightlifting workouts and wanted something more dynamic. I immediately felt welcomed at the gym when I first stepped foot into it. Every time I walk in I am enthusiastically greeted by the coaches and other members. Everyone from beginners and seasoned fighters get equal attention and this has helped me progress quickly from starting off having bruised toes from stumbling over my own feet and to feeling confident in hitting pads with a partner without looking like a newborn calf. The music that is played during session is top notch, from The Descendants to Prince, Spotify's algorithm couldn't put together a better playlist. One of the biggest improvements in my life that The OG has given me is all the complements my wife gives me when I wear my Muay Thai shorts around the house. I am very excited to further my Thai kickboxing skills and I couldn't think of a better place to learn then at The Old Guard!

Short response: The OG is the best and you should most definitely come give TOGTBC a try!!
Longer response:
I’m picky, overthink way too much, sometimes forget to breathe, get more than a little anxious at times, and am so very very out of shape, but I read something on the website that convinced me to give the OG a shot a little over a month ago.
“The hardest part about starting is walking through the door. Once you’re in, we’ll take it from there.”
And I can say with absolute confidence that’s exactly what happened. Starting something new can be daunting, but here, it’s not only that each of the coaches exhibit patience and knowledge, meeting me where I’m at. It’s the kindness and encouragement from the entire OG fam. No matter who I’m partnered with, even as a complete beginner I feel at ease. I have a million questions all the time, and I never feel like I can’t or shouldn’t ask. Everyone is more than willing to help, allowing me to grow so much more than I thought I could, and I cannot recommend this gym enough!

I started training at The Old Guard about 3 months ago and couldn't be happier. I came in with a few months of kickboxing experience but pretty close to a beginner, and immediately felt welcome.
Every coach is kind, supportive, passionate about Muay Thai, knowledgable, and great at teaching. Each week focuses on a different concept (like balance, moving in/out of range, etc.) and each class is really thoughtfully designed around different ways to explore and practice those concepts. All of the coaches are attentive and helpful while wandering around, providing feedback, and answering questions as you train. I've left every class feeling like I've learned something new. On days when I'm feeling lazy and have to drag myself to the gym, I always end up glad I decided to go.
The culture and community of the gym are great too. While there is a wide range of skill-levels/experience, you can tell that everybody there is just excited to both improve and help each other improve. The vibe during classes is fun and relaxed, but still focused and meant to push you to get better. There's strong emphasis on protecting your training partners and I've never felt unsafe. People are also always happy to help you train around injuries which I appreciate.
I'd absolutely recommend The Old Guard to anybody looking for a Muay Thai in Austin!

Have you ever went to a new gym and felt like you knew this was your gym? That is what I felt during my first free class I took here.
My background in MMA in which I have learned boxing, kickboxing, and Muay Thai while living in the DC metro area. Muay Thai is huge in the DC metro area, and when I moved back to Texas in 2016 I was sad to see there were very limited gyms with a Muay Thai program. Sadly, I switched my focus back to kickboxing which is similar but not the same.
One day this year, I decided to search again for a Muay Thai gym in Austin near my house. This was when I discovered the OG Thai Boxing had opened a few months ago, and it was a short drive to my house. WINNER WINNER chicken dinner!!
I took my first class in the evening back in July. The gym had a solid number of people in their class. If you have ever trained in Thailand, you will see the similarities in this gym. This includes no AC, but luckily a few fans are running. I am currently enjoying the morning classes.
A few things to note: It is a little expensive (not much more than comparable gyms in the area) and you pay month to month without a contract. To cancel, you give them a 30-day notice. They do have a veteran's discount which was nice and I was thankful for when I signed up.
Overall, everyone is welcoming and ready to learn and progress their Muay Thai skills to their fullest potential.

I'm stoked to share the experience I had training with and learning from Dave and the rest of the Old Guard Thai Boxing crew.
My partner and I had were looking for a gym that trained Thai boxing/muay Thai. Not kickboxing, not MMA striking, and no belt rankings or other nonsense. Just muay Thai.
After trying a few gyms we didn't quite click with, we ended up at The Old Guard on their opening week. I signed up to train twice weekly mostly to make sure my partner had a good work out buddy, and for myself, to break the monotony of my other workouts. I was totally OK with muay Thai being a smaller part of my life than it once was.
One week in and I was hooked again. Dave has cultivated an awesome gym environment filled with experienced pugilists, enthusiasts eager to sharpen their skills, and people that just want to work out. The gym has an energy that brings the team up and gets everyone stoked on their partners' success.
It's rare to get a stellar mix of quality instruction, a sense of community, and a bunch of sweaty, amazing people under one warm warehouse. It's lightning in a bottle.
I highly recommend diving head first into joining this community to hit some things and make some friends.

The old guard teaches the most authentic Muay Thai I would say in the Austin area. The community is very open, friendly and most people are willing to help others with any questions arise during your training session. The coaches take the time to teach you the correct technique, while also helping you get an amazing workout. They’re very health conscious, for insistent between rounds reminding everyone to keep hydrating and take the necessary breaks. Also play close attention to cleanliness, like routine cleaning at the end of each day/ class with mopping the Matts, and cleaning the bags/ ring. Tiffany and Dave are very professional who are very open to any questions you have. I would say if it’s your first time trying Muay Thai I would definitely recommend this place and get a good trail session in to see if this fits your lifestyle. Also if you’re an experienced fighter I would have to say you would definitely need to check the gym out and get some good work in. There are plenty of experienced fighters/ coaches greeting all levels with a friendly smile.

I'm a traveller and like to keep my Muay Thai practice going through my travels. I'm visiting Austin for a couple of weeks and was looking for a good traditional Muay Thai gym to continue my training at. My buddy, a UT grad student and Muay Thai practitioner mentioned that there weren't many traditional Muay Thai gyms around. That's when I googled "Muay Thai Austin" and found The Old Guard. I checked out their website and dropped them a line on Instagram. The head coach Dave responded immediately and asked me to drop by for a free trial. After the free trial, he worked out a sweet deal for me to work with them for a week – truly appreciate his flexibility.
The gym itself is very spacious, open and clean. I like that the doors are kept open – it's nice to feel the breeze and it reminds me of the open gyms I trained at in Koh Phangan, Thailand.
Every week, Dave picks a focus area – I like that because it keeps the training feeling fresh.
I have had a chance to work with Spencer and Mikhail (I hope I spelled his name right) – two of the assistant coaches and fighters. All three (including Dave) are kind, friendly and direct with their suggestions. There is a good amount of emphasis on technique which I appreciate – it's not all about just burning calories. Dave walks around and drops a piece or two of useful notes and reminders. I have already noticed how my guard seems to drop after I throw a punch (Dave gently reminds me every time he sees that) and how I swing my arm too far back leaving my face exposed when I knee.
They also have some neatly designed, cool-looking gear – just another indication of the care that Dave has put into setting this place up.
Grateful to have a place where I can train twice a day for 2h – just like I was doing in Thailand. It's nice to see the Lone Star flag and the Thai flag side by side in the gym 🇹🇭⭐️🦵🏾👊🏾

This is a wonderful new Muay Thai gym! In the search for this gym, you've probably wondered to yourself, what're your goals? Do you want to become a warrior in the ring? Do you want to get yourself into the best shape of your life? Do you want to learn more about yourself and master your body? I know this gym can guide you through any of those.
The coaches here are experienced, attentive, patient, and will bludgeon you with love. But you get to hit them right back! There is no "bro culture" here, just a community of people that are constantly striving to improve themselves. If you're still unsure, you can get a free initial lesson to feel it out, so don't hesitate!

OK. I'm really enjoying this gym and I'm picky :) This is not an MMA gym. It is a place to come and learn, grow, refine traditional Muay Thai with great attention to detail on technique (absolutely key!). The owners, Dave and Tiffany, are really awesome people, and they have also assembled a very seasoned group of Muay Thai instructors who have all been in the ring many times. These are great coaches! There is opportunity here for everyone to enjoy this sport from someone first stepping foot in a Muay Thai gym for the first time all the way up to seasoned fighters and everything in between. And it's an excellent group of people. So come on down and experience the Old Guard Thai Boxing Club!

Great school, I checked out all the others in the area and this was by far the best. All the instructors have very high attention to detail, which i've had a hard time finding in many other places i've trained. Everyone trains hard, but smart. There are also several classes every single morning and evening, so training here can fit anyone's schedule.
