This place is an absolute gem. On point, carefully thought-out, no-nonsense workouts with a brilliant balance of strength and conditioning. The class sizes are small, and the coaches ALWAYS look out for every last one of us. Everything is planned with an eye towards building strength, endurance, and longevity, with zero intimidation factor (even though all the members are absolute beasts — like, next level athletes). Come for the fitness, stay for the friendships!

The coaching is top notch and the fitness community here absolutely can’t be beat. There is a variety of people who work out here, so the environment is supportive and not intimidating, and the quarterly events like relays and kickball tournaments are a fun, optional way to make new friends.

I drive across town during rush hour to get to this gym; that’s how much I love it. 😁

The coaches are super knowledgeable, empowering, and helpful. The workouts are thoughtful, accessible to all, and effective. Lastly, the community here is second to none — so welcoming, inclusive, fun, & humble.

This gym has given me confidence in a gym full of barbells & heavy weights. Big win!

Grateful for this place, and highly recommend checking out!

Whether you're a competitive lifter chasing your next PR or someone just beginning your fitness journey, you will feel seen, supported, and inspired here. The coaching staff at The WIP are top tier — no ego, no judgment, just real people helping you grow stronger in every way.

The WIP offers thoughtfully designed programs to suit various fitness goals. Their "Muscle" classes focus on total-body strength training using barbells, kettlebells, and dumbbells, while "Hustle" classes emphasize conditioning through conditioning, HIIT, and power training.

But what truly sets The WIP apart is the community. It’s not just about reps and sets — it’s about real relationships, encouragement, and a shared drive to keep showing up. From your first week (which is free, by the way), you’ll feel like part of the family.

The space itself is clean, well-equipped, and has a great energy the moment you walk in. Every class feels like a small victory — whether you're lifting heavy, moving better, or just showing up on a tough day. No matter your goals or experience level, The WIP will meet you where you are and help you grow.

I found myself here while recovering from painfully debilitating back injury, and my physical therapist recommended lifting weights to continue healing and protect myself from future injuries. Long story short I’ve gone from barely being able to use my left leg to fully functional, lifts kinda heavy, member of their gym.

Bean and John are great coaches who took my injury and utter lack of weight lifting experience and reshaped them into one of my favorite hobbies.

The gym itself is pretty awesome too. No toxic roided out bro culture, just a healthy mix of all types of people with different fitness goals showing up to do their work.

can’t say enough good things about this gym! The community here is incredible, and it truly feels like a family. Coaches Bean, John, Conner, and Mitch are not only highly knowledgeable but also genuinely dedicated to helping each of us reach our fitness goals. Their hands-on approach ensures that everyone receives the best support they need to succeed.

The positive atmosphere and camaraderie motivate me to push myself further every day. If you’re looking for a place to transform your fitness journey while becoming a better version of yourself, I highly recommend joining this gym!

Although the WIP has only been around for a couple of years, it is definitely an old-school Austin spot, run by and populated with the loveliest smart and creative weirdos, who all make the workout so fun you barely notice how much it’s kicking your ass. I came to the WIP with a torn rotator cuff and major depression, worried that my heaviest lifts were a thing of the past. The coaches provided excellent modifications prior to surgery and got me back in the gym just a few weeks post surgery with careful programming to supplement my PT. More importantly, they have helped me improve my form so I am able to avoid injury in the future. I’ve even hit PRs now a year post surgery. Many thanks to Bean, Connor, and especially John for all the time and care they took with me, and thanks to all of the WIP community for keeping my spirits up. Far too many gyms rely on fear and self-loathing to get members to buy in, from deleterious diets to spurious programming. The WIP has zero toxic bro types, just good vibes and true grit. If you have been burned by bad gym experiences or just too afraid to even try lifting, then you should check out the WIP. What other gym has paper airplane competitions?

I’ve been fortunate to be working out here since the day it opened; the community and culture at The WIP are unparalleled. Even after moving 30 minutes to the hill country, I still make it a priority to get my 3 days in a week. It’s the perfect mix of cardio and strength.

I have been a proud WIP member since April 2023 and was immediately hooked. Not only is it a great workout, the community made it easy to come back for more every day. I can say I’ve not only laid a great fitness foundation but the friendships made here are built for a life time.

I moved to Austin in back in December, and within a week of being in town I came across THE WIP. I decided to sign up for the trial period and knew I was going to join after the first workout.

This gym is very much a community. Everyone is welcoming, inclusive, and supportive of one another. We cheer each other on during hard workouts, have a standing hang out time on Fridays for those who can make it, and we’ll even get brunch with one another after the Saturday workouts.

Aside from all the friendships that you’ll make, you will also get a PHENOMENAL workout! I added about 60 pounds to my back squat, 50 pounds to my deadlift, and 25 pounds to my bench press within my first 6 months. Also, my conditioning increased to the point where I felt confident enough to participate in a half marathon trail race in May, where I placed 7th in my division.

All of this progress can be attributed to the wealth of knowledge provided by coaches John, Bean, Connor, and Mitch. They focus of teaching us proper form, and will correct deficiencies in our movement so we can get the most out of our workouts.

Whatever your fitness goals, THE WIP is an excellent place to go regardless of your experience level. There is something here for everyone!

You’ll sweat, you might bleed, you may even cry (happy tears)….because the coaches here will teach you great form, encourage you, and help you get stronger than you ever thought possible.

Plus what better way to celebrate personal records then by having drink after classes.

Your future self will thank you for signing up.

Great experience. I went for a single drop in session whilst in Austin on vacation. John, the owner and trainer and the rest of the group were so welcoming and the workouts were fun and I could go at my own pace. Would highly recommend.

PROS: Science-based barbell and conditioning workouts, intelligent coaches with a vested interest in your progression, central Eastside location with easy parking, great community with social happy hours on Fridays, welcoming atmosphere, epic soundtracks, emphasis on proper form.
CONS: After 7 months of going here and growing muscles I didn't even know I had, I just took my Summer clothes out of storage and realize that I'm now too muscular for nearly half of them. Charge it to the game.

I don't go to gyms because I don't like the indoors and all the mirrors etc. - While on holiday in Austin I was introduced to this fitness and wellbeing oasis. I am so thankful to all of you who made this such an incredible experience. I will go here again anytime - the patrons and the coaches are all equally wonderful and I can't wait to share space with them all again in the near future. You guys rock - thanks for everything you do.

Great gym and space. The staff are very approachable and adaptable to your own fitness goals. There are programmed classes (if working with a group motivates you) and also open gym hours. Overall, a great experience and the members are very down to Earth. Come for the workout, stay for the short shorts.

I have known John and Bean (Christina) for a number of years and they are two of the best coaches I have worked with. The new WIP studio is a great community of people that are there for the intense training sessions and for a sense of camaraderie and fun. The best part, this is a place where you can be 20 to 60 years old, first time class participant, in or out of shape and everyone will part of your support network at WIP. There are no egos or points to prove, people come because they want to be there for the program and the people.
The programming is well thought out, challenging, interactive and usually pretty #$# hard,. But, you will love it!
