This gym reminds you all the time that it's one of the cheapest in town. Machines are constantly out of service for over a month for the most minor of things. I've never seen the manager on the gym floor and the staff just everything down at 5:30 on Sundays, which is way too early and ahead of the 6:00 closing time.

This gym has a lot of equipment, but honestly stinks like no other gym I've ever been in. They also over charged me and never refunded, when I emailed over a week ago. The team is slow to respond to requests. The front desk is friendly, but doesn't make up for being over billed and the BO. Canceled after 2 months and no movement on over billing. Very disappointed and would NOT recommend!

Recently started to work out with a Personal Trainer, Jay really understands my goals and what I'm looking to accomplish with a Personal Trainer. Strength, balance, mobility, all starts deteriorating with age and we must re-train the body to keep up. A Personal trainer is a great way to get back into a workout routine.

Good in general! clean and really nice pool and hot tub. Gym is good and have enough machines and weights. It would be good to have someone coordinating the pool in the busy mornings, as sometimes there are lots of people waiting.
UPDATE: Pool is usually closed during early mornings and opens at 8pm. I hope this gets better.

Nice facilities, but pickup basketball is consistently put on the back burner for anything and everything else. If you are joining to play basketball, you’d have better luck elsewhere.

I love visiting down town YMCA do to its overall very pleasant environment. Though it has a large number of equipment and plenty of space, my prime reason for visiting to exercise is the pleasant friendly staff, and most members being congenial. Ally who sometimes is at reception desk always genuinely smiles. Andy is another favorite staff member who lets me know he really loves me as another human being by telling me to "shut up". (no irony intended) I love it. Different characters shinning their love light into the world in their own style. Authentic, uplifting, and I wouldn't have it any other way. People like these enhance my experience at the Y. :)

This location is very nice, but do not trust them. Their Buda location has stolen $1200 from me after I cancelled at the front desk, then AGAIN by phone. Get everything in writing. They are not a Christian organization, they're a shady business that will take any chance to continue charging you. If you can't trust their staff, don't give them your card info... they'll do anything to keep taking your money and then weasel out of correcting their mistake. First they steal, then they lie. Keep all communication in TEXT, don't let them victimize you like they did me. Again, they lie.

I joined this gym for the low rates and the true month-to-month membership terms (no join fee). The membership also gives you access to all participating YMCA locations nationwide which is a huge perk.

This location has a good amount of machines, free weights, and barbell racks. I wish there were open-stride ellipticals that allow you to adjust the incline in addition to resistance, but the ones they have are fine. Most of the cardio equipment is Technogym brand which theoretically allows gym goers to track their cardio stats between various machines, which I haven't tried.

Availability of group fitness classes is a nice aspect. I've only tried a few classes and they were fine. As part of my membership at Townlake YMCA, I tried a HIIT class at a different Austin YMCA location, and the instructor was teaching with an injury. While I was looking around the room there seemed to be a lot of really bad exercise form that the instructor wasn't addressing.

If you're more used to a conventional gym, this may not be your vibe. The "community" thing comes with some aspects I found unusual.

I'm not used to other people trying to use a weight machine that I'm on in the middle of my workout. There are even signs on the wall saying it's expected YMCA gym etiquette to let other people swap out with you on a machine between sets. Personally I don't feel comfortable with this - I sanitize before and after I use a machine and I don't want to share it with a stranger in the middle of my sets.

Also, the level of friendly chatter amongst participants during some of the fitness classes I've attended I found weird/distracting.

There are also a lot of signs everywhere condemning phone use on the machines. I can understand not wanting people to take up space on the machines while texting for 20 minutes, but I know folks like me use an app to plan /track their weightlifting workouts. So far no one has come down on me about this, but the ubiquity of the signs stresses me out.

I guess there are different flavors for everyone! I may not be a YMCA gal. But for now it certainly serves its purpose.

awesome! I always love coming to the Y to workout. The equipment here is nice and modern. I haven’t had any issues being able to use equipment or find a space to work out, even on busy days. There is a lovely park with sports fields nearby as well. Everyone is super nice, I even made friends with a fellow patron on my first visit! Most importantly, the staff are super friendly as well! nice location and clean gym.

was approached today by Sean Moreau, a personal trainer, when using the leg extension machine downstairs to which he opened the conversation with a passive aggressive “do you time your rest intervals?” implying that i had been using my
phone for too long on the machine. i didn’t even realize he was a trainer until later because of how he opened the conversation, i had thought he was someone trying to bother me. i had been on the machine for 7 minutes when this happened. not to mention the moment i sat down at this machine i noticed this trainer staring at me at hence decided to pretend to not see him and go on my phone. honestly i haven’t had such an odd experience until today and it was very disappointing. he proceeded to say that i should minimize the time on my phone since there is only the free weight leg extension machine downstairs and then the one upstairs (as if i don’t know?) in any case, there was no one waiting for the machine and if someone needed the machine and asked normally like any other person how many sets i have left, i would have been HAPPY to wrap up my time on the machine. and no, the trainer did not need the machine considering he was training his client through an upper body session.

and yes, i am aware of the no use of phone signs downstairs…to which i have to say perhaps we have a different philosophy of business. this location always has stairmasters, treadmills, and other machines that are out of order in addition to being a centrally located gym in austin. minimizing phone usage implies that the members are inherently causing machine shortage problems at this gym instead of internally reflecting and re-directing to what the facility and staff themselves can do instead of outsourcing the issues to members that pay for this gym. both the signs and now the actions of this personal trainer comes off as passive aggressive, as well as demonstrates a lack of accountability. perhaps starting with timely machine maintenance would help during peak hours, followed by more efficient floor planning, etc. would be a better route as trying to stop members from using their phones is certainly an interesting business choice to say the least.

Seems like a good deal if you're young enough for the young deal, and overpriced otherwise, but it's close to me. Staff has been nice. The breakdown of equipment is non-optimal. The ratio of stairclimbers to rowing machines to treadmills is off. Missing some kinda obvious pieces of equipment for a gym this size like a bicep or tricep machine. On the plus side, they have a steam room that gets decently hot, a sauna (wasn't that hot the one time I tried it and thus went to steam room), a jacuzzi and pool, etc. It's nice if you live nearby or also a good deal if you can get the young people pricing.

Weight and cardio rooms are often too hot and poorly ventilated. In summer, the AC would be out of service very frequently, and no notification would be sent out. They sent an email only once the day after it broke down. In winter, they’re either cracking up the heater and/or turning off the ventilation completely. It’s very hard to work out in a crowded room with 75-80 degree temperature and too much CO2. I see people in a lot of sweat doing barely any hard activity. Hope they fix their ventilation system and keep the temperature down.
I think for the price you pay, they also close very early and operation times on Google are not updated regularly. They keep sending out emails about random things but no communication about important stuff like changing hours or broken AC.

I am deeply disappointed with the YMCA's Child Watch services. Recently, my child bumped his head and cried for 20 minutes without receiving any attention from the staff. This level of neglect is unacceptable. When I reported the incident to the child watch manager, he immediately accused my child of lying about being yelled at, instead of addressing the issue professionally.

The Child Watch staff are young and clearly untrained, and the managers exhibit unprofessional behavior. I also suspect a bias against the Asian community, which is deeply troubling.

Additionally, the front desk staff were very rude when I asked simple questions about their coffee services. Overall, I do not feel safe or respected at this YMCA, and I would not recommend their services to anyone.

Around a month ago, I was sojourning in Austin for the purpose of viewing the celestial phenomenon: the Total Solar Eclipse. I was looking for a YMCA to exercise at since I am a member of one back home, but unfortunately, my “home” YMCA recently joined the chain and thus doesn’t have its nationwide portal properly configured yet.

However, despite my failed entry attempts, Townlake YMCA staff were very cordial and understanding of my issue. Instead of directing me to purchase a one day pass, staff allowed me to enter completely free of charge—on multiple occasions.

Heightening my satisfaction with this particular Y was the fact that its surroundings are absolutely prepossessing and that it is situated in a very convenient location: it is practically right on the Colorado River and on the outskirts of downtown. In addition, the facility is one of the best I’ve ever witnessed, boasting new equipment and a fun-to-navigate layout.

I will definitely be returning next time I visit Austin; though, I am not sure if I will do so anytime soon, considering the city’s growing homeless and crime problems…
At any rate, this gymnasium thoroughly impressed me and significantly enhanced my experience in Austin.

They have like 10 squat racks. It's insane. First gym I have been to where I don't have to wait to get on one.

Only downside is the shower/locker room is kinda gross. So I don't ever utilize them. Bathrooms outside of that are very clean though.

Also could use a few more treadmills, but the space is small so I understand the constraint.

My favorites so far are Cardio Dance Funk and Yogalates. My boys love the weights and exercise equipment. My husband likes a variety of classes and weights and rowing machine. This is my favorite YMCA in central Texas. The staff here work hard to maintain this YMCA and provide a welcoming experience and it shows. This facility is well equipped and kept clean! There is ample space to get a great workout in (though it does get busy during peak hours) and lots of friendly folks willing to have a conversation. Normally the Y is five stars.

I have loved the Town Lake YMCA for years, even taught pilates there, until I had to interact with DEB at the front Desk. I hadn’t been there in a few years, and wanted to get a day pass. She informs me I have a balance of 100$ to my surprise. I asked her to break it down and I told her that doesn’t sound right. She must have repeated, “ you have a balance of 100$ at least 10 times, as I was trying to figure things out. I asked could I just get a day pass for today and figure this out with accounting when they were in M-F, as this was a Sunday afternoon. She refused to help me problem solve and refused to simply let me workout which requires zero loss of money for the Y, from a long term customer. It was not the sweet compassionate service I have always known from the Y.

We had some words, and she yells as I’m walking out, you’re never allowed in here again. I forgot my phone and had to go back in, and she yells again, you still owe 100$.

My interaction with her was appalling. I was excited to get back to the Y and swim and workout and she was like militant at the front desk…. Over a day pass!!

Fantastic staff that stay positive and friendly every day of the week. Very clean facility, high standard of maintenance and great selection of equipment. Even Hack Squat & Belt Squat Machines in the basement (though only a Lying Leg Curl, no Seated Leg Curl). They open 2 hours early for women on Sundays which is very cool! I LOVE the Townlake YMCA

Good Morning Everyone! I hope y'all are chilling
out & enjoying your weekend. All I will say is this....Townlake YMCA. I belong to 24 Hour Fitness....have been a member for a few...yes, um, a couple of decades!!! 👈🏾😳😳🫢🫢😯😯😲

From Sunny California, To Las Vegas, Here in TEXAS.. & "ONLY BY GODS GRACE," Oregon in the near future. However... One thing I have dreamed of, hoped & prayed I'm living. All the trauma im living with & Walking My Way: Day by Day....Through It; The Trauma.....to Be living 3 minutes from the LADYBIRD Lake Trail; is one of the most Truly Beautiful Experiences. I walk every single day, & the problem is I Am So Very Deeply Overwhelmed By The Anghts Of Hate & Racism....I am wqlking further each day but, the
Arthritis In My Feet Is getting worse...from the extra walking. It's A Double Edged Sword. 🤺

Walk to heal, more undeserved intended tort & emotion distress....more walking. Help!! (???)💔

Happy & Grateful but, the 55 & up complex I live in....Is An Unbelievable Nightmare. I'm doing all I can to Force Change but; its taking its toll.

Excellent weight room. 6 squat racks, 4 of which are double-sided, so you can always find one. Rarely too crowded. All the machines are on the newer side and are great choices in brand/design, in my opinion. Super friendly people too, with diverse fitness goals; that goes for both the staff and members. Keep doing what you do

Who wouldn't love the YMCA at town Lake? I miss the Rio grand campus. And the old days of being chased down the road By hoodlums and dogs and skin eggs.

I love this place! The people, the equipment, everything. Their dry sauna has been updated and is even hotter than it was before. After 2 years or so they finally fixed the steam sauna. Unfortunately it’s too cold to get much use out of. State law or something. Very strange since the dry sauna is super hot. Now all they need is a cold plunge!

The equipment has improved substantially after the latest renovation in May of 2023. (However, there is no longer an adductor-training machine, unfortunately.) There are something like 14 potential power-training stations (squats/deadlifts/military press etc.), albeit in reality it's tough to always make use of all of them - but, still there's an ample number - more than any other gym in Austin except the UT-Austin ones - and they are sometimes even available at peak hours (e.g. 5:45pm).

The YMCA is awesome and everyone that works there (except the people that are in charge of membership cancelations). Hence the one star. Everyone at the YMCA is very nice but the membership team is predatory and they make it impossible to pause or cancel a membership. They make you jump through hoops for no other good reason but to try to charge you an extra month. What a way to smear my experience with YMCA

Wow! Check out this YMCA NOW!
The best equipment and deal in gym-rich (and pricey) Austin.
They completed a huge upgrade from top to bottom: State of the art equipment and flooring. Love the staff.
Check out the photos. I’ll update as it goes.

Great facilities, helpful staff, lots of strength equipment, and proactive communications on when classes occur so I can plan around them. Not much more to say!

It was between the East Communities Y or Townlake when I was choosing between gyms. It’s not even close; Townlake is better across the board. If you’re choosing between the two Y’s, choose Townlake even if it adds a few more minutes to your commute

Finally decided to cancel my membership… They recently made some changes to the type of equipment they offer and the atmosphere of the weight room. They added speakers and started blasting music in the weight room, it is god-awful and SO LOUD. It can’t be blocked out with noise cancelling headphones. I tried to work the the director Shaq Brown on this but he just responds some variation of “we are addressing this issue” without making any changes- For some reason this director is really obsessed with the music despite numerous member complaints. The final straw for me is their recent changes to the equipment, which actually made the equipment selection worse. kept only 1 smith machine and didn’t get any more, so it’s nearly impossible to plan around being able to use it since somebody else is always on it. They got rid of certain machines such as the hip and glute abductor. They also got rid of the calf raise machine. I dread going to the gym now, and every time I come here i just leave annoyed! So sad because I’ve actually been a YMCA member since i was a child, I even learned how to swim here, and I love all the staff.

I use the Y only for the pool, so this review is specific to that. The pool is in good condition and the swimmers are very respectful when you need to share a lane. There are six lanes which is a great amount, if all are available. The parking lot always has open spaces.

My only issue with the pool is that there's typically programming from ~5-8pm on M-Th, leaving only 2 lanes open for all rec swimmers at busy times. Having only 1/3rd of the pool available during the busiest time of day on weekdays is pretty inconvenient and I think warrants looking elsewhere if you're considering the Y for rec swimming.

This YMCA has the best location in Austin but the sauna and hot tub are in desperate need of renovation and better maintenance. Staff are friendly and kind.
