The “gymnastics” instructors at Academy West are mostly teenagers with poor attitudes who don’t know how to engage with young children. My daughter made very little progress and lost her confidence while attending this gym. We eventually switched to Epic Gymnastics—and I only wish we had done it sooner.
At Epic, every coach she’s worked with has been supportive, encouraging, and professional. They take the time to build real relationships with the kids, and it shows. My daughter’s confidence has soared since switching. She even earned a medal, which at Epic comes with pins for each skill she passes off—a thoughtful, motivating system that truly celebrates growth.
By contrast, the instructors at Academy West hardly smile, often come across with attitude, and do not communicate with parents unless absolutely necessary. When concerns were brought up, the only solution offered was to switch classes—blaming the child for not “bonding” with the coach. At Epic, she’s bonded with every coach she’s had and leaves every class smiling and proud.
Academy West not only stifled her skills but also her self-esteem. I would strongly advise against wasting your time or money there.

We absolutely love Academy West where my daughter has done gymnastics for nearly 3 years. The coaches push but are also patient. My daughter has a very competitive personality, and Academy West has helped her immensely in being able to take criticism and learn. They are always available and responsive with questions and concerns. Very supportive atmosphere and team helping her thrive!

I had older cousins who went here and competed. I went for preschool (over 10 years ago) and did jazz/ballet mix for 3. I had a lovely experience and still treasure the childhood memories of my favorite coaches and teachers :)

Both of my girls have participated in gymnastics, tumbling, dance and summer camp - they LOVE IT!!! We just signed up for Summer Camp again this year. They come home with great crafts, and all kinds of stories about park time, yoga, parties... it's the best! A great program to stay on a schedule for summer and keeps them fresh for school type tasks like reading and math brought out in crafts and activities.

We went here during the end of COVID; we ended up getting really sick and my daughter even hospitalized, obviously I wasn’t sending her germs to class. I paid for 2 months because autopay but we didn’t end up going any more. I didn’t feel they were taking appropriate measures to minimize germs. When asking for a refund they said sure and they’d call me back, they called me back and said no. So they took my money in return for no classes, and sickness! Wouldn’t recommend.
**Edit, I DID write this 2 years later as I am shopping around for a professional gym to put my child in to pair with homeschooling. But regardless of time, it doesn’t change the fact we paid for classes we didn’t attend and were refused a refund after someone on the phone told me I should have been getting one. As stated on the phone call (which happened after she had not attended several classes, not 2 years later) I was clear she had been VERY sick and in and out of hospitals working on a chronic asthma diagnosis. I didn’t think I owed anybody an explanation for why my student was dropping out, as I wasn’t using materials, or funds, and her “class” wasn’t competitive. we couldn’t risk the germs, or losing the money. But only one of those things I could control. Even if it meant eating $140, that said I wouldn’t recommend that to any family, especially ones who work hard in this type of economy. Hopefully you guys have made a positive change so parents don’t leave feeling the way I did. 🥰

Went in with hopes that my 3 year old daughter was going to not only learn gymnastics but have fun while doing it, but the TOTS Class was very disappointing and a waste of money. The instructors are young girls that honestly are terrible at instructing and are not so friendly. This place definitely did not meet my expectations unfortunately. Please hire people that will actually teach and instruct.

iwent there a lot as a kid. i did MANY things there. preschool, gymnastics, tumbling, jazz, ballet, tap, hip hop, jazz, almost everything they have, honestly. I had my fair share of good instructors - but unfortunately most of them were bad. My preschool teacher was amazing, but everything past that was horrible. Nice people, maybe, but terrible at instructing. It was so, so physically demanding that it was ridiculous! they used to push me down really hard during stretches. A big problem with academy west dance/gymnastics teachers are they NEED you to be super flexible. If you are not super flexible, they are going to push. and push you HARD. oh, and don't forget, they'll make sure you get less parts in dances and routines BECAUSE you are not very flexible.
Do better! especially to the kids who have disabilities.

Totally under-rated gymnastics academy. Great price and the most friendly instructors, and their communication with parents is unparalleled! My daughters learned so much and felt included. My oldest is very shy and was scared at first, but the amazing instructors helped her feel at ease around the other kids in her class, and she even made friends! I love that the classes are based on skill level rather than solely on age so they can progress more smoothly and actually learn in a more progressive minded way. We had to cancel when we moved away, but compared to other more predatory gymnastics academies, it was a painless process. I still recommend this place to anyone in the area looking to get their children into gymnastics. If we ever end up moving back, I will definitely be bringing my daughters here again!

I have told all my friends about the workout classes they offer and will continue to do so
I can’t wait until I could enroll my daughter here! I know she’ll love it just as much as I do

This is a long story but so worth the read! We absolutely LOVE Academy West! What they have done for our daughter I can hardly put into words. We were with another gym for 7 years and after the last year we needed out urgently. My daughter is 13 and we decided to walk away from the other gym. After months of mentally breaking down my daughter (and other gymnasts) we couldn’t do it anymore. We walked out 2 weeks before the state meet. The previous gym offered zero solutions or help, wouldn’t let my daughter finish out the season. We found Academy West from one of our meets with them, their girls were cheering for my daughters old team and their support for girls they didn’t even know was inspiring! We called Academy West knowing my daughter likely wouldn’t go to state, we were wrong! Academy West took her in, gave her private dance lessons, taught her a new beam routine, and an entirely NEW floor routine in 2 weeks! My daughters love for gymnastics is back, her passion and self confidence has returned as well! I truly didn’t think we could turn her around after the damage from the previous gym, but we’re headed to state confident that she will excel! As long as we live in Utah, we will be at Academy West!

DO NOT LET YOUR KIDS NEAR THIS PLACE. They always asked me for money even though I didn't owe them anything!! This is by far the worst gym and if you want your kids to be successful go elsewhere...
This is 100% the truth. They lie, steal and cheat! BEWARE!!

I was just at academy west today to watch a gymnastics competition. The meet began at 3 and it was recommended for gymnast to be there 30 minutes early so we arrived early as well to secure a good seat( especially when I’m paying to get into the gym to watch) There were no seats available, and over 50 people were forced to stand for almost a 2-3 hour event. When we arrived we were assured that the amount of people was because of a previous meet and it would clear out and there would be enough seats. Not to mention the parking lot is horrendous and you have to park in literal mud. For how much gymnast families pay in gym fees/team fees it is disappointing that their hard work can not be enjoyed by their families.

My Boy Girl twins attend the Tumbling Tadpoles and I can't express enough how much I love the class. Coach Tonya is wonderful with the kids. She does a fantastic job of teaching the students to have respect, taking turns, and following the rules. My children are truly learning from these these tumbling classes.

Great staff that are really dedicated to the gymnast and their development. My daughter looks forward to her time in the gym every week. Solid development program you can see your child's skill level go up every week. Only draw back is that the gymnast get attached to the coaches and it makes it hard for them to move to the next level. This is only because of the level of attention your child will receive.

I am a Grandma to 7 active kids. I love to watch ALL the kids perform in meets; watch them train from a glassed in viewing room; and participate in many of the different activities sponsored by Academy West. I love the newly renovated space! The management is professional & helpful and I love the coaches. If I was a judge I'd give them a solid 10!!!

My daughter broke her foot two weeks ago. She paid to participate in a meet at this gym (trains at a different gym) but even with advanced notice they wouldn’t refund the entry fee even though she was seriously injured. Avoid this place.

Awful. Came home crying almost everyday. The coaches are very rude and compare you to other gymnast.

They push the kids through the levels whether they are ready or not then make them feel bad when they can't perform a trick. Need better coaches.

My daughter took a hip hop class and it was not a hip hop class more like a country class with sliding on the floor. Instructor didn't know what she was doing!!! I do not recommend this studio at ALL!!!!!

Have a few great coaches whom I love and adore, but the owners are a pain to work with and are NOT very accommodating. They have very poor business management and poor attitude towards customers. Very unprofessional. They also have a lot of very undertrained staff members who they let run some of their higher level classes who are clearly spotting WELL above their comfort zone and trained ability. This company only cares about their competitive gymnastics program and limits their other programs with their lack of attention. This would be a great company under different management, but the current owners do a very poor job. I would not recommend this company.

I basically payed $70 for my toddler to play on the equipment which I could have gotten at a park for free. I tried out one class at the Little Gym in Draper and loved it but this place was closer. The class structure at the Little Gym was great toddlers are super distracted but basically the teacher would show us how to do a trick than we would make our way to the station a practice it than once everyone went she went to a new station and trick. So my toddler ran and played but we learned something.
I was expecting the same type of thing at Academy West. First class I got no direction nothing even though it was clear we were new. Finally I asked the teacher what I should be doing. She hands me a paper with a list of gymnastic moves on it. First I have never done gymnastics I don't know what any of these things are. Second how am I suppose to read a freaking paper while chasing a toddler around!?! So basically the only time the teacher just didn't stand around was when I had to specifically ask her to show me what to do with my toddler. And I never saw her so any other parents anything. I guess they just knew what they were doing. I gave it four weeks to see if it got better it didn't. I hear tell the older child classes are great but the parent/toddler classes are a total rip off take your child to play at the park instead.

I started taking tumbling seriously in my late twenties and love how Academy West has embraced me and has worked with me to achieve my goals. The coaching staff is absolutely amazing and love how they offer open gym time for me to practice my skills in a safe environment.
