Sports complexAbout the Club
Construction of the George Albert Smith Field House, which bears the name of the eighth president of the Church, began in 1950. The "fieldhouse" concept allowed physical education and conditioning during all seasons in an indoor environment. Originally the west annex was covered with sawdust. Weekly devotionals and forums, student assemblies, concerts and civic activities, and graduation exercises all occurred here. Today athletes are able to train and condition in the building's state-of-the-art weight training facility; coaches administer their programs from offices here; students and staff lift weights, jog, and do aerobics; and fans still come to cheer on their intercollegiate volleyball and intramural basketball teams.

We love the small venue for attending volleyball games. It's a great way to join in a bit of live action and cheer for the team without dealing with the massive crowds that come from football.
I am a little bit claustrophobic, but we have season tickets in seats next to the entrance stairs. Easy in, easy out! And it's right down the stairs to concessions!!!
Their kettle corn is our favorite and my husband likes the hot dogs too. We rarely wait in a line to either enter or exit.
It's great living within 10 minutes of 2 large universities, a ski resort, bike paths, mountains to hike in with abundant waterfalls, several large grocery stores, and every modern convenience.

I really enjoy the George Albert Smith Fieldhouse. I regularly go there to exercise with my father. I usually run for a few miles on the track and the stadium stairs, then I go in the faculty/staff weight room to lift weights, and then we finish our exercise regimen by baking ourselves for thirty minutes in the sauna. Then we complete our trip to the gym by putting our used clothing on a loop and putting it in the dirty clothes bin, showering ourselves, then driving home to Orem. πποΈππ

Attended son-in-law's commencement. Bleacher type seating is not comfortable for long events. Rest rooms are too small during large events. Need to get to large events early, for close parking, during large event.

Those who prepared the service project should have a huge shout out.
The kits, supplies and instructions at the tables, flow to fill the caterpillars, the amazing ladies who sold them up as well as those who checked the finished product.
All went extremely smoothly because of their prayer preparation.
I wish all of you could have heard the laughter, the stories, and the joy of The sisterhood.

Student gym-Honestly sad that this is the gym we have as byu students. Doesnβt open till 6 am and often the ONE WORKER isnβt even there on time so we all get in late. Today nobody even showed up, I left after waiting 1/2 hour cause I needed to get ready for class. They need a better system so this doesnβt happen as it has happened a few times since Iβve been going. Machines get broken and never get fixed too.

Just want to clarify that this review is about the BYU gym for students inside the Smith fieldhouse. If you are a BYU or ELC student and are looking for a place to work out, this gym may not suit your needs. It is tiny considering the tens of thousands of students who are encouraged to use it, and it can be hard to get a turn on some of the equipment. BYU should invest in creating more gym space, especially since getting plenty of exercise does worlds of good for student's mental health and many BYU students need a good way to de-stress.

Great place to check out if you are a student at BYU.
For full time students that obtain a free wristband, there is an entire indoor track you can use when the track team isn't. You also get access to a gym on the second floor, although it is often times crowded and there can sometimes be a line.
All students are allowed a small locker (or several) to keep your items in. You just claim them at the beginning of the semester by putting a lock on the one you want and removing it by the end of the semester or they will just cut it off. There are always open lockers and the locker room is never crowded. There are showers too but I've never used those.
There are water fountains everywhere and bathroom near the track, the locker room and the gym whenever you need them.
I would highly recommend students take advantage of what BYU has to offer in this building for free simply for being a student.

UPDATE: occasionally a girl will rudely ask everyone running on the track, mid run, if they have a wristband. This happens sporadically and Iβve never seen one of the groups of club/teenage athletes that arenβt allowed to train on the track get kicked off. Often these groups run the wrong way on the track, take up multiple lanes, and literally run into the joggers and walkers. And often after the girl asks everyone on the track if they have a wristband almost everyone leaves and the track sits pretty much unused the rest of the night. Way to promote health and wellness in your community BYU. Not to mention, I saw this girl go up and hound on little kids with no wristbands. What the?!? Just talk to the parents lady!
But, I still adore this indoor track. It saves me in the winter when I can't run outside because of the pollution or cold or ice/snow. It is 5 laps a mile, but it doesn't feel that different from the average 4 laps per mile. Does make it a little tricky pacing for workouts, but it gives my brain something to do while I'm in pain haha. They do have certain hours it's open, so check online before going! If you want it to yourself go on a Saturday afternoon. It's also starts to get less crowded around 8-9pm.

The gym room with weights and machines is an embarrassment. It really comes across as an afterthought where they merged about two classrooms, they put mirrors on the walls, and put in some machines.
It really gives the impression that student health and fitness is not a priority.

I really don't like BYU. But, this is one of the top 2 indoor track facilities in the state. Probably region. A banked 322 meter track? Can't beat it. Unless you go to the Olympic oval. It's annoying you can't deadlift in the weight room.. but the track makes up for it. By a long shot.

I have only ever used the student weight room part of this facility. The equipment they do have is okay, but there just isn't much there. This gym is really small and we pay way too much to be restricted to such a small, old facility, when simply being on a sports team gets you into the fancy stuff. As a service member, I need to be in at least as good of shape as anyone on the [pick your sport] team, but I have to go somewhere expensive to have access to everything they have. I still work out here cuz it's free, but BYU can do so much better. I've been to similar facilities at MUCH smaller schools that were ten times better than this, and all students can use it. Also, it's dumb that it closes early for things like education week. The field house of all places should have no need to have reduced hours for something like that.

Very old compared to other universities. Only two gyms that are very crowded and one is used all throughout the day classes. I don't really see how this building serves the students compared to the other university gyms in the state. Wish we had a gym like them!

The fieldhouse is the location of a few student health amenities. The indoor track is located here. The track is nice, but often the annex is closed and the track is shortened significantly. This isn't a major problem, and in general, the indoor track is a great place to run.
The student weight rooms are also located here. These rooms are very outdated and extremely small. They are normally jam packed. The university really needs to invest is better student exercise facilities. This building is 65+ years old, and simply can not meet the needs of 30,000 students.
