If you love 40 minute check ins and staff hovering over you your entire climb this is the place for you. My favorite part is when I was going over skills with my boyfriend - it’s apparently banned to then get certified. Loved that we didn’t even know about this rule. I have had my bely certifications at other gyms but because I was nervous for this bely test and was practicing just tying my knots I was banned from testing. Super cool gym. Highly don’t recommend. Go to the Quarry. Way better staff and experience.

Not sure who's managing the Mill Creek location these days but the place is either overrun with rambunctious children or empty because there are not enough routes for beginning and intermediate adult climbers. The top rope area now has an overabundance of 511 to 5:12 routes.
When you walk into the gym the entire west side is packed and the other half of the gym is like a ghost town. Can we please even things out?? Put some 8s, 9s and 10s in the top rope areas please. And maybe some easy leads in the leading area. 57, 58, 59?
_---+--++++++
Could use more 5.9s/10as but the routes are challenging and fun. Clean, expansive but also EXPENSIVE!! Wish there were better deals for the average Joe to climb. Maybe a weekday/midday pass option?

I love Momentum. I love the atmosphere, I love the staff and it's just good climbing. The dues are hurting since y'all raised the rates though. I wish there were two tiers of membership. One that is just bare bones climbing access and then another one that includes all the extras like the gym, and yoga classes and such. I'm struggling to afford my membership and I don't have time to avail myself of all the bonus stuff anyway.

Great climbing gym, but not super happy with the management. They’ve had a longstanding policy of 2 free monthly guest passes as long as you pay for a membership…. You can no longer bring the same person twice. They should either offer a discount, or go back to the old policy.

As an out-of-towner, I was blown away by how nice this facility is. Largest (and best) slab bouldering section of any gym I’ve been to—great for working on comp style slab. Even better, there were so many strong climbers to watch and learn from! Would definitely drive back to slc just to go back to this gym (especially since I didn’t get to try the lead wall 🥲). Highly recommend!

The Youth Climbing instructors are so positive, enthusiastic, informative and patient. My daughter has been part of the youth classes season season for years and has gained confidence in her climbing ability, but more important her self esteem seeing herself overcoming challenges. Derek Quick, the Youth Program Manager has also been accommodating, personable and quick to communicate. Highly recommend.

I’d love to rate this gym more highly, but as someone visiting from out of state and with a lot of east coast gym experience I have a few glaring gripes.
Firstly, the setting strategy here seems to be to set a climb about 1-3 grades below the desired level, and then swapping 1 or 2 important holds for the nastiest holds in the gym’s selection.
Secondly, the whole community thing feels nonexistent. I have seen no one interact with anyone they did not enter the gym with. People seem to roam in pairs or small groups and only talk amongst their established friends; whereas on the east coast and in the dmv area, people who don’t already know each other will work on climbs together and interact with each other. It’d be nice to see the gym work for a cultural change that encourages a little bit more interaction between new people.
And last, but not least, the route grading here is wildly inconsistent. I, as someone who has climbed relatively hard on the east coast (not V-double digits, but close on many occasions) and I find that some climbs in my warm up range take 5 or more tries, while others close to my limit take far less. There seems to be an overall style to how this gym sets, and when breaking from that style all sense of how hard a boulder is seems to go with it.
On a more positive note, this location has a massive lead area, which as someone who is usually climbing on my home gym’s lead wall is refreshing.

There are not enough lower grade (9, 10a, 10B) lead routes on the longer walls for people who are recovering from injuries. Please put up some 9/10a routes next to the speed wall, by the belay test and in the back right corner where it gets steeper, and on the steeper wall right behind the front desk. That would make my enjoyment much better and my review higher. Additionally, the cost for a single person is getting out of control. Couples get a price break but a single membership of over $105/month is too high. And why not give a Senior discount to those of us who still love to climb, but may not be using a majority of routes due to difficulty. Thank you.

Great indoor gym with a ton of bouldering and a great selection of both top rope and lead climbing. Yoga classes are good. Actual gym area is kind of barebones, but that's not a deal breaker for me.
March 2025 Update: Gym is still an excellent place to climb, I'm only revising the rating because they've slowed down on updating routes. I split my time between the Millcreek and Fort Union gyms and the Millcreek bouldering routes are much older on average. I hope they can start updating routes more frequently again.

Great gym, clean, friendly community. My only complaints are: They don't change boulders enough and all their setting from v6+ is way to hard or forced weird moves like crazy hand+foot matches. For reference, Ive done one v7 in their gyms but Ive done 50+ outside across the US and 30+ on the Kilter Board. I currently consider it the hardest gym ive been to in the country.

I love the staff, setters and climbing space.
Bathrooms - always malfunctioning in some way. Towels would be nice. In short, make your bathrooms/showers look like the Front.
Brushes - it's incredible that there is always a shortage of brushes. These are lower cost items that are not only valuable for the climber but also the hold you own. The Fort Union gym had one brush for some time after opening. For the whole gym. . .
Weight area - need signage to remind people their mom doesn't work here and to re rack weights and put away equipment after usage.

Momentum is a good gym with great climbing. I'd give 5 stars if they had a Sauna and better workout area. Hopefully the update to the workout area brings new gear. They really need to update the lifting area, it’s a lot of old equipment that is broken, poorly laid out and only 3 squat racks. They should take some notes from the new Fort Union location

Your routes are totally one sided for the more difficult routes. There are not enough lead routes in the 9, 10a, 10b for those of us that are returning from injury, or just not strong enough to do the harder routes. And if you could put up some 10a or b lead routes on the longer walls ( next to speed climb area, behind the front desk, and on the wall before you get to the bouldering area) so we can gain some endurance, that would be very helpful.
PLEASE ADD MORE MODERATE LEAD ROUTES!

Not helpful. Tried helping the kids get in and climb. The individual helping with the setup wanted to “fail us” on my belay technique, which I’ve used for scores of climbs. Then he tried selling me on a belay class? Seems like a place for purists or upselling. I couldn’t tell which. Try another gym if you are getting your kids into climbing.

It was an incredible experience for me! I watched a video on You Tube where these people were climbing a rock and their emotions were real! I wanted to experience the same feeling!
I was in Sal Lake City for work, I opened Google Maps and found these guys, I called, then came and here I am, already at the top and my legs and arms are shaking, and my heart wants to run away as soon as possible, my blood is boiling and filled with adrenaline and I also experienced the feelings of LIFE!!!
Thank you guys, you are great!

Loved the quantity and quality of climbing at this location. I had a membership at the Front for about a year and had never been to Momentum. After visiting, I can say I truly believe it is a more climber focused gym. There is just so much more bouldering, top rope, and lead climbing options than the Front. Really glad I decided to check it out. Hannah and Nataliya at the front desk did a great job answering all of our questions and making us feel at home. Thanks to you both!

Try to go during work hours. If you do, it’s a nice facility with plenty of space. If you go outside of work hours… god help you. You will feel more like a kindergarten chaperone than a rock climber. The coaching/camp staff are regularly distracted, chatting amongst themselves while their kids run directly underneath you, don’t fall! They encourage their kids to cut in front of other climbers, do multiple laps on boulders people are waiting to climb and never once have I seen one use or suggest using a brush. I would never let a child I know come to any of the programs here. This issue has been brought up countless times, as the staff told me, yet nothing is being done about it. Cool facility, but expect to be treated as a lower priority than the dozens and dozens of children running around.

-A huge assortment of beginner to advanced climbing options
-Very open and airy with plenty of places to stash your gear
-Comfy places to rest between climbs, which is especially helpful if you're making a day of it to get your money's worth.
-As a beginner I enjoyed that they had some unique, creative and challenging V1s, like having to take a running start to reach the first hold. My only wish was that they had some auto belay routes too, sadly not yet.

A very nice gym. I'm giving 4 stars because of the lead test - I failed the belaying part, because of using the tunneling method.
I understand the policy about it, and respect that. It just made the experience suboptimal for me, since I couldn't climb the cool-looking big wall with my climbing partner.
You can only redo the test on the next visit. I'm visiting the city from overseas, so that doesn't really help.
It just sucks a bit, to be proficient in belaying, have good eye on the rope management and all (the person overlooking the test said that) and then at the very end of the test being told "everything was perfect, just one thing, you used the wrong method, so you can't pass the test today".
I get that the tests are in a way picky, and stimulate people to really remember the mistakes, it just doesn't feel nice to experience it, when that's your last time in the gym.
I'm writing it here if it maybe helps someone else to avoid the situation, and for the gym, mentioning the belaying method would make the difference for me. (Of course attending the training would make me know it, but for people from elsewhere in the world that would be helpful.)
The 2 week trial pass is a really good idea especially for visitors to the city.

I had the most amazing experience at the Millcreek Momentum! And it’s all because of Trevor.
TLDR: Trevor was helpful and knowledgeable, he explained why my shoes didn’t fit and were painful, made educated recommendations on other models, and even gave me a pair of his to use!
Full Review: I have just gotten back into climbing/bouldering, and bought some brand new shoes of FB marketplace, knowing nothing about them. True to my size, but to say they were tight is an understatement. However, I don’t know much about climbing gear so I figured they just needed to break in a bit… fast forward 1 minute into bouldering at Millcreek Momentum and I was in so much pain! I popped over to the front desk to grab a rental pair, cause there was no way I was ending my climbing session early.
That’s when Trevor comes in, I said “Can I ask you how I know if my shoes are right for me?” And that’s all it took, he answered all my questions, as a self-proclaimed “shoe nerd”, explained why the shoes I bought were actually not very well liked in the climbing community, how they had been discontinued, and even proceeded to show me other brands and models that would be best suited for my climbing abilities. He told me all about Demo Nights at Momentum and recommended I come. But his 10/10 service doesn’t stop there! His next brilliant idea! He wears a size 10, and because of the type of shoe he likes and climbing he does, he often wears a 39.5 (W8) in climbing shoes. He offered for me to try a pair of his shoes for the day “if that’s not too weird of course”… but I was willing to try anything. After seeing how well they fit and how much more fun I was having he told me to keep the shoes!!! I pleaded with him “are you sure” and he never hesitated.
Not only did I get a “new” pair of shoes, I made a new friend and enjoyed a fantastic night of bouldering. Thanks again Trevor, you can’t imagine how much of an impact your excellent customer service made. You deserve a promotion!

26$ for a day pass is just ridiculous. For two people you’re paying over 50 dollars just to boulder.. I've been a member with Momentum for over a year now, and here are my findings and opinions about the Momentum in Millcreek. MoMilly offers its members a unique experience with steep overhanging sport routes, a diverse training area and environment with boards & a weight gym with the chance to see "Instagram influencers" and pros regularly. However, due to its popularity, coupled with the lack of options for SLC locals to rope climb indoors, you'll find it almost impossible to get a parking spot near the gym during the busier hours. Once you make it inside, you'll search even longer for a warm up that isn't currently being climbed. Surprisingly the chalked up/greasy holds are not the worst I have seen for the amount of traffic the popular routes get, but they aren't in great condition either. Another rad feature of this gym's environment are the plethora of clinics it provides to customers. Unfortunately these clinics often take up climbing wall space and many parking spots away from members that result in inexperienced climbers and children running around the gym and new climbers climbing dangerously. I do think the staff could do better correcting the shenanigan's that sometimes occurs here. It would be cool to see the gym get autobelays as there is ample space for some to be installed. As a longtime member it does feel that the Millcreek location caters more to non members which is frustrating at times but is made up for when Whippers and Waffles comes around. Personally I think this gym could have better member perks like member parking, lucrative shop discounts, and better member-only hours to name a few of the top of my head. Now I know this is a climbing "gym" and that there is an REI and IME around the same shopping center but the "shop" currently in the gym is super lame and has so much potential to benefit its members and even non members. Momentum Indoor Climbing Millcreek does many things right yet there is still room for improvement. 4/5 stars because I think the Sandy location does it better.

5 year membership and counting! I tried 2 other GYM's in SLC and just have to keep coming back here. Wish the gym added like 1 biggg comp style bouldering problem each month like Lehi. Only thing I hope for this gym.

This is my boyfriend's happy place. He comes as often as he can. There are always new set ups and challenges. I come with him every now and then as his guest but I always have the best time.

So much fun! Shout out to our instructor Diego, he did a fantastic job showing us the basics to climbing! Millcreek location has always been my favorite. Highly recommend for anyone looking to get fit and out of the house anytime of the year!

I just loved the experience, very easy-going staff and clientele. Fast and easy sign up process. Very challenging lead-climbing, top rope routes, and bouldering problems.

This place sucks it’s always dirty and filthy disgusting inside. I wouldn’t want my worst enemy to be there. Also there’s never any parking anywhere. I’m gonna call the health department on these people.

I was really disappointed in the way the staff presented themselves.
I have read recent reviews and see a common trend with a young blonde employee. She is extremely disrespectful and rude to guests. As I left the facility, I watched her make jokes and point at me while laughing with other staff members.
For being a progressive gym, I have never been more surprised by the disrespect and discrimination among beginners.
