I've been doing Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, and MMA at Sierra for about 7 months. I've tried Jiu Jitsu in at least 6 other gyms and this is, hands down, my favorite. I especially love how many skilled female training partners I have here. The vibe at this gym is a great mix of demanding and competitive, while being super supportive and fun. The people are all friendly, welcoming, and good-natured, and the training environment is super positive. The coaching and classes adapt to whatever your goals are - whether that's to actually fight competitively, enjoy a hobby, learn self-defense, or just get a great workout. The coaches take time to explain everything and I'm never afraid to ask questions when I have them. Something the coaches here do better than other gyms is they watch everyone carefully and give you consistent feedback every single class. I also love that the coaches have strict expectations that everyone take care of each other. Martial arts are inherently dangerous, and injury is somewhat inevitable, but I feel much safer training here than I have at other gyms. I also feel like I've been able to improve faster than at other gyms, particularly my striking, because I'm not constantly afraid of getting hurt.
Tre is a very invested coach. His preparation for every class is evident, he doesn't waste time, and the drills and games he uses always teach me something. He also spends a lot of time outside of class with students, doing extra training, explaining, strategizing, etc. My skills and confidence in Muay Thai have increased much faster than I expected because of him.
Pedro is also a very invested coach. His approach to teaching Jiu Jitsu is unlike anything else I've experienced, but it's so intuitive and makes Jiu Jitsu feel accessible to a beginner. He makes Jiu Jitsu make sense.
Overall, both Pedro and Tre are really good at breaking skills down into manageable parts and helping you get good at them incrementally. Their approach to martial arts really works with my body and my brain :)

I’ve been at sierra for 1.5 years now…. As a fighter coming from a bigger gym to a smaller gym was a bit of a transition for me. Pedro and head striking coach Tre had to have several conversations with me on what was to be expected from me as a student, athlete, and training partner! The way Tre teaches is a bit unorthodox but the results have spoken for themselves. From a fighters perspective, coach Tre has given me so much insight into mixed martial arts and has showed me just how many layers there are! If your looking to fight, train, or just an overall good community to be apart of Sierra mma is defiantly a great safe place for anybody and everybody!

I’ve been taking private sessions with Joel Haro for some time now and I can confidently say it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made. He a phenomenal coach who is goal oriented toward your success and he’s completely invested in seeing you succeed. It’s amazing having a coach with that much level of talent mix with patience. The gym is a great environment, it’s very welcoming and the high level of coaching makes it a no brainer.

I have been training with Joel Haro at Sierra MMA for about 4 months now. I have a great experience every time. He is not only knowledgeable and experienced, he has a way of breaking things down to me ( an amateur at best) in a way that makes sense.
He makes training super fun and also makes me feel really comfortable in training with him. I would recommend him to anyone looking to learn MMA, striking, jiu jitsu, or just to get a great workout in.

I'm in my third month of training at Sierra MMA, and I can confidently say this place is awesome. The gym is not only inclusive and welcoming, but it’s also a lot of fun to train here. Pedro, the coach, is deeply passionate about teaching and truly cares about helping his students improve. He strikes the perfect balance between pushing you to be your best and providing the support you need to get there.
If you’re in the Salt Lake area and looking for an MMA gym, I highly recommend giving Sierra MMA a try! You won’t be disappointed.

I wanted to give BJJ a try, saw that Sierra had a women’s only class on Saturday’s (for free) and I have been hooked since. Highly recommend the women’s class to any lady looking to give it a try. Tami is the best!!
The gym is such a positive, welcoming environment. Being a 30+ mom made me felt like I had no place in a MMA gym, BUT everyone in the gym has been my biggest supporters. I feel more confident in my abilities in every aspect thanks to Sierra MMA.

I used to compete TKD another lifetime ago, and decided to try combat sports again. Recently started my trial week. I did a few MT classes and a sparring session and I was hooked. The biggest thing I noticed about this place vs other martial art schools I've seen is that they start live drills with controlled contact from day 1.
Pedro and Tre have been very supportive of me getting back into the swing of things. I let them know that my neck isn't what it used to be and they've been mother hens about it, keeping me safe but pushing me and helping me discover what I can do and probably should not do, and safely moving that boundary as well. Everyone I worked with at the gym on my first BJJ day was very careful with my neck but pushed me hard for everything else, which is exactly what I wanted.
I feel very grateful and fortunate to have met everyone here at Sierra MMA. I haven't felt this good in a long while. Long live Sierra MMA

So I definitely recognize that I'm in the minority in having a bad experience here, but man was my experience bad, so take it for what it's worth. I'd done a lot of MMA training for a few years about a decade ago, but took time off for school and my career. Wanted to get back into it because it really is a fun way to stay in shape. But at Sierra, it was anything but fun. There were three major things that made my experience here pretty awful.
So in a small group class, there were three of us taking turns rolling. I got winded and needed to sit it out for a few minutes at the end. This got Pedro very frustrated and he started talking loudly about how obnoxious and irritating I was being. This was not done in a "haha, come on ya' wimp," playful way, but was very clearly happy to try to put me down way. Not impressed.
The next issue was in a similar class where we were doing exercises trying to either maintain mount or escape from mount. Pretty basic and clear. But this one guy was trying to show how tough he was, so when he escaped from mount, he unexpectedly threw me in an armbar and cranked it 100%. I didn't resist in the least, because in my mind the exercise was over. Freakin hurt! I just laughed it off and said something along the lines of "ouch, wasn't expecting that with what we're doing." He said sorry, and Pedro just watched. Didn't say anything. Ok, that stuff happens. Then when I was doing my next rotation with him again a few minutes later, he threw me in an armbar and fully cranked it again! And again I wasn't expecting it because I thought it was clear we weren't doing that. Pedro still just sat there, didn't intervene or say "that's not what we're doing man." Almost a year later, my tendon is still recovering from the two hyperextensions. Poor discipline made it a dangerous place.
Finally, I decided I wasn't interested in continuing working with Pedro because I felt unsafe and hostile. So I called Pedro and said I was canceling my membership. He looked me up, very rudely said my membership was already canceled for lack of payment, then hung up on me without another word. Funny thing is, I could look through my bank records and see that I had paid my dues, including an unclear charge for $300 earlier that week.
So, that's my two-cents. Seemed hostile, unsafe, weird financials, and just not a place I could recommend. Fighting should be fun and inclusive, and that's been my experience everywhere else I've been. This was the only gym I've ever been to with any of this negativity, so I'd have to suggest to anyone looking for an MMA gym to look elsewhere.

Sierra is a great gym. I’ve been training with Joel, the Muay Thai coach, for years and I can’t say enough good things. Coming to a new gym was intimidating and Joel made me feel right at home immediately, his coaching has really helped me gain confidence in my Muay Thai but also the confidence to take on anything that comes my way on a daily basis. I consider Joel a mentor, coach, and a friend. I feel lucky to have found sierra and has been such a positive influence on my life I really can’t recommend it enough. If you’re considering visiting a Muay Thai, bjj gym you’d be doing yourself a favor stopping here first.

I absolutely love sierra Mma Pedro is great and he is definitely dedicated to his athletes and peers, I’ve trained at a few gyms before sierra and when I made the move to salt lake from kaysvile I fell in love with the place as soon as I stepped foot on the mats in his gym. The whole team will greet you with open arms, high level instructions from all the coaches who teach (Bruno, Pedro, ms tammy, Samson & Joel) if you have ever wanted to try Bjj, grappling or kick boxing this is definitely the place to be. From the competition classes to fundamentals you will learn so much, make amazing friends and always leave the gym feeling accomplished. If you’re an out of Towner definitely make this gym a stop while traveling, all visitors are welcome with open arms. The words (water mouth piece fight time) will never get old. 👊🖤

There are so many reasons why this gym is the perfect place to train. Pedro has built this gym with the central idea of community and team building in mind. The coaching I have received here is above many other coaching I have experienced at several other gyms. Pedro and his teams style of teaching has drastically improved the quality of Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai from his students. I have seen a tremendous amount of growth in both myself and my fellow teammates here. Pedro doesn’t shame any student for asking any type of question, he really lives up to the statement that “there are no dumb questions”. The high level athletes that train here are welcoming and kind and always willing to help newer/struggling students. We drive all the way from Lehi and it is worth every mile driven. It’s been amazing to see what he has built from the ground up and I am exited to train here for years to come. If you are looking for an excellent, above average MMA gym, look no further because this is it.

I looked at a lot of different places in finding a gym to call home. I wanted an environment that fostered learning, growth, and excellence while minimizing risk of injury, especially with me being new. Pedro Sierra’s team has met and exceeded all of my expectations. Pedro works hard to cultivate relationships with those he coaches. Even during my trial week, he remembered my name and was excited to see me when I showed up.
Additionally, the training combines formal education and outlining of concepts with hands-on application of skills with feedback.
Overall, I’m grateful and happy to have started my martial arts journey here.

I really enjoyed my time at Sierra MMA. I primarily train out in California and was in Sandy, Utah visiting for a couple weeks and had heard about this gym from a friend. I attended the Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai classes during my stay.

Of the classes I took, Pedro and Joel were the instructors and you can immediately tell they both have extensive experience. Their instruction, approach, knowledge, and interaction are all reasons for anyone to come in and experience this gym. If you are looking for a place to train permanently or if you are just in town and want to get good quality work in, you can’t go wrong at Sierra MMA.

I cannot say enough good things about Sierra MMA. I have been training almost 5 years now, and I (along with so many others) followed Pedro when he followed his dream to open his own gym. His support is a testament to the phenomenal coach, mentor, and friend that he is to so many. He is a true martial artist in every sense of the term. He eats, sleeps, breathes jiu jitsu. He is dedicated to studying the most effective jiu jitsu, tried and true from the highest levels of competitors in the world.
Bruno leads the gi jiu jitsu program, and he also has been committed his entire jiu jitsu journey to studying and learning from the best in the world. He has traveled the country to learn the skills he brings back and shares with all of us students. He also leads the children's program and I've seen first hand how engaged he is with each student.
Joel Haro is a well known to the Utah MMA scene, and is the head Muay Thai coach at Sierra MMA. He has an amazing ability to get everyone fired up and excited about learning Muay Thai, from brand new people walking through the doors to experienced fighters. He, like the other coaches of Sierra MMA, studies from the best and relays those skills to his students.
I cannot say enough good things about this gym. Positive people, positive place. That's the culture that has been cultivated here. People young and old, experienced and novice, walk through those doors excited, not only to get a great workout, but to learn new things day in and day out, and progress in their martial arts journey. If you show up, give it your all, you won't regret learning from these great coaches!!

I am a Brazilian JiuJitsu black belt under Professor’s Robert Handley, and Pedro Sierra.
I trained with Professor Sierra from my first day as a white belt, to my black belt.
I can say from over a decade of training with Pedro, that I’ve never met a BJJ practitioner or professor who was more committed to learning and evolving than him.
He is constantly striving to improve himself and his teammates, as we’ll as fuel their passion for the sport.

Pedro has been a coach for my 2 boys for over 3 years at the gym he was teaching. Pedro was one of the main reasons I gave Jiu Jitsu a chance because he was relentless at keep encouraging me to do so. As a coach, a teacher and a mentor, Pedro is stern but encouraging. He has high expectations but he is also patient. Pedro is very technical with his Jiu Jitsu, he often provide the smallest details that can help me alleviate the struggles on how to perform a certain movement correctly. EVERYTIME we walk through the door, as long as Pedro is there, we were always greeted with a big welcoming smile. When we recently found out he was leaving the gym to open his own gym, I was torn... I was so happy for him because he is a really good teacher and all the students he will be teaching will be so lucky! I was also very sad, because we are losing our teacher and our mentor. We wish Pedro the very best. He will always be a mentor to us!

I was lucky enough to preview the facility before it was officially “Sierra MMA,” and was impressed with the amount of effort and intention that was shown in the planning process. While I haven’t had the opportunity to train at this new facility yet being that I’m not located in the area, I very much look forward to when I am. I have however had the opportunity to train with their striking coach and have no doubts about the quality of technical and strategic advice that will come from that facility. They’ve got a solid group there, and I am confident they’ll do well to cultivate a culture of positivity and discipline to help mold the hearts and minds of future martial artists.

Pedro is the best coach to have in your corner. He is sincere and genuine. He will help you reach goals you didn’t think you could reach. He is dedicated to every person he teaches and cares about helping them succeed. There’s no one else like Pedro. I’ve had the pleasure of being coached by him at the gym he worked at, and it a positive and welcoming place.

I have trained at a lot of different gyms in the valley, and the instructors at Sierra MMA are some of the best around. The game is not static - it is always changing. Pedro, Bruno, and Joel are constantly learning and developing their own skillsets, then bringing that knowledge back and sharing it with their students. All three have a knack for presenting information in a way that is easy to comprehend and retain.
If you're new to martial arts or a seasoned veteran with competition experience, I highly recommend you check this place out.

Even though jiu jitsu is a challenging art and the learning never ends, professor Pedro and his staff make it exciting and for something as hard as this, I’m always excited to go to class and be with the people. It has easily transitioned into therapy and has helped me become more confident and capable. It’s truly a family environment as well. Everyone progresses with each other and become better in life in general. 10/10 recommend.
