Built in the early 1960βs, the Stephen L. Richards Building was constructed to provide space and facilities for physical education instruction. The board of Trustees had recognized the need for larger and more adequate physical education facilities and authorization was given for the construction of the Richards Building. The building was one of the finest facilities of its kind when it was completed in 1971. The Richards Building houses the departments of Physical Education, Dance, and Health Science. The building contains five gymnasiums, three pools of various sizes, multiple dance studios, and various other rooms.

Scheduling team is horrible. They never give time to play badminton. We schedule and then are kicked off by other sports itβs ridiculous.
Been trying to fix the issue for years and they never change. I have loads of beef with the RB building they are not nice people.

The facilities themselves are older, but thereβs lots of stuff to do here. Great variety! The layout and room numbers are very confusing at times.

Fantastic place to workout on campus! The gym has pretty much everything I wanted and, of course, for those taking classes here, I'm sure it's great as well!

This is the place to see the best of the best BYU dance teams perform.
You will enjoy every moment you spend watching these great dancers.

I appreciate an organization that doesnβt feel they need to rush out and spend multi million dollars to build a new facility for no reason.
That said, if this facility is going to continue to host the state high school swim competition, there are some big upgrades that need to happen. Number one they need to improve their streaming capabilities and not stick them off in the corner so nobody can see the stream. Number two they need to improve the walkways so that you can actually walk two people past each other above the pool.

We go for the pool, but recently we've had to use the shallow pool. It tastes more chlorinated than usual and there's a lot of black chunks of padding from the lane lines floating around. Would only recommend swimming if the lap pool is open

For the amount of time that I have spent in this building I think that I am qualified to say that it is a fun place. There is such a broad array of things that are shoved into this building it is incredible. Public services, games, rooms and classes are held in addition to the regular college activities. Whether it be the high school swim meet, the ballet performance or a zumba class, the RB is the place to be.

Love the gym here but I wish that they would modify the dress code and be more lenient! Especially with some things changing in general conference this year!

Building is great. They built a long time ago and itβs still there. And it has the same smell 30 years later that it had when I was a student.

I cannot believe that they enforce a dress code upon the women students who attend this educational institution. I had an experience where I was told to lower my shorts because they were too βdistractingβ. This school is a joke, the people are misogynistic that work here, and these regulations for a dress code are outdated and insignificant. Tell your male employees to stop looking at my body, making a judgment, and proceeding to tell me that Iβm being inappropriate. Like sirβ¦. Youβre the one being inappropriate. A male student walked in before I did with even shorter shorts, and was told nothingβ¦ Such a hypocritical staff and school.
DO BETTER BYU!!?

I love this place and the staff are great, but im leaving a 1 star review in hopes that a higher up will read it and think about changing the wristband policy. It's truly awful. You can only use the facility if you have your wristband that you get as a byu student after signing the waiver. If you forgot it, you have to stop what you're doing and get a temporary one from the front desk, which no one is happy about it. If you lose it, they want to charge you $40. And they interrupt your game all the time to check if you have yours. One time, they stopped our vball game 3 times in an hour to check even though our group hadnt changed. And the funny thing is theyre not even catching those in our groups who arent byu students and dont have wristbands. Like i pay enough in tuition guys, please find a better system and let me use the gym without jumping through all these hoops

I never knew the Richards building had a dance studio. It was so fun to watch the dance recital. The dancers were all smiling and gave a great performance.

They're a lot of awesome things to do here like basketball, swimming, volleyball, racquetball, and more. The building is really nice all you need is a wristband from the desk.

I play volleyball here every Friday morning. The whole place is well ventilated, drinking fountains are easily accessible, and the courts are in decent condition. The only downside I've seen is the low hanging basketball hoops over the volleyball courts. Their racquetball courts are great too!

I used to work out at the student gym upstairs. It was dirty and the machines were really run-down because the place was always uncomfortably crowded. I knew a guy whose finger was torn open by a cable that snapped on one of the weight machines. He needed several stitches. Also, the person running the front desk won't let you in if you're a girl wearing shorts above the knee. Kind of ridiculous if you ask me!

The RB is really great for some things and not great for others. The womenβs gym is a nice touch but doesnβt have much in it (recommend the smith fieldhouse gym) and the pool is currently closed. However it does have a dry sauna, a ton of volleyball and basketball courts and it also has many dance rooms!
