The Y is a great facility. As a senior I enjoy the wide variety of exercise classes that are offered. HOWEVER, like many members, I am extremely frustrated with the inadequate parking in their lot. Sometimes I am unable to attend a class I signed up for because I can not find a parking spot, and consequently when that happens it goes on record as a "no show"...(and you're penalized if more than 3 in a given time period). Sometimes there may be a line of 5 or more cars waiting for a spot, with the line extending into the side street. It's crazy!
Unfortunately there is no remedy to this problem. It's something you just have to live with. If you're lucky you may find a side street parking space or one at the library, and you better rule out parking at the co-op unless you want to risk getting a $45 parking ticket like I did recently.
So, that's the reality, and that's why I can't give the Y the 5 stars it deserves.

Three stars for being a typical public gym.
The pool and gym are great as long as you don't use the locker rooms. The showers are covered in boogers, and the women's locker room smells BAD. If you're a germaphobe... just make a system where you don't ever have to use the locker rooms or downstairs bathrooms.
But what made me just cancel my membership was that Thursday night Adult volleyball turned out to be a Michael Scott skit for me. I would strongly recommend someone change "adult volleyball" to "youth volleyball" on the website so that no other bright-eyed thirty-something relives traumatic highschool flashbacks. I wish the staff could've given me a heads up while I was pacing around for 30 minutes beforehand, anxious as heck after psyching myself up for weeks to get myself to try out volleyball. Left the Y in actual tears after walking over to stretch with a bunch of teens waiting for an inexistent adult to walk-in, then slowly swerving back to the other side of the gym by myself when I realized these kids (who were going on twenty minutes of completely ignoring me) all saw me as an old weirdo who couldn't read the room; sooooo cringe. As an audhd Burlington-newbie... the Y is just not it.

We’ve had a very disappointing experience at the Burlington YMCA. I signed up my daughter for swim lessons, which was difficult enough due to high demand. But on two separate occasions, we drove from Colchester only to find that no instructor showed up—and worse, there was zero communication from the YMCA about these cancellations.
Despite following up with the swim instructor supervisor and a senior customer service person—multiple phone calls and emails—I received no response at all. The lack of accountability and communication is incredibly frustrating, especially given how expensive the program is.
Parking is another huge issue—it’s consistently a nightmare to find a spot. On top of all that, the communal showers in the swim area are dirty and often neglected. Even on a Saturday morning at 10 a.m., they’re visibly unclean.
For what you’re paying, the experience falls far below expectations. Definitely not what I’d expect from a community-focused organization. Would not recommend.

Lovely facility! Great for swimming, weights, basketball, sauna, pickleball and workout classes. I especially enjoy the HIIT classes and childcare while I workout with my wife.
Only problem is parking so if you can walk, Uber, carpool or take a bus I’d suggest doing that instead of hoping for a spot.

Beautiful newly constructed YMCA facility with great very helpful and knowledgeable staff. They have an abundance of all the equipment and weights that I like to have available including a couple of the things used less frequently that I find many gyms don’t have. The very numerous squat racks and dead lift weights is AWESOME too!… avoiding a usual bottle neck of weight time I see all too often in other gyms

They seriously need to clean their sauna. The Burlington YMCA is overall good, staff are friendly and helpful, however, they clearly don't clean their sauna whatsoever. If you look between the gaps in the benches you will see 1/4 inch of filth. There is constantly a puddle of sweat.

I will never send my daughter to any after school program or camp ran by this establishment again. Long story short they kicked my 6 year old out of camp mind you in front of her face (real professional) accusing her of making racially motivated comments toward an "authoritative" figure. The director in fact admitted that she learned from the older children at the camp and admitted was an ongoing problem throughout the summer with other children. The director also did not want to kick my child out as she too thought it was a wrong doing and that my child is so young and it was not fair to her. Instead of using that as a teaching moment to my daughter as she is still young, still learning & she did not know and was confused as to why they kicked her out until I explained to her in which still couldn't fully grasp as again she is 6 years old they treated her like some threat. I proceeded to ask to speak to said counselor to find out what exactly happened and was told that her presence was making them feel uncomfortable....before you discriminate and deem a young child to be a racist and kick her out of a camp you may reconsider and if you aren't full aware of children behavior you shouldn't be working with children. In addition to one of your camp counselors yelling at my child because she forgot her crocs as it was supposed to rain the day that she wore her sneakers. Your establishment is a disgrace and small claims court could very well be in your future.

So truly disappointed in this ymca. We have been members in other cities and states for decades. I have put off this review for years. At this point I have to write it. This ymca does not care about the community. They are strictly interested in PROFIT. Firstly we tried several child based classes; gymnastics and dance. Both were subpar for the very high price tag along with the membership fee. You cannot park to even arrive to the classes on time and they “instructors” have no idea what they are doing. The youth director is impossible to reach, does not reply to email or voicemail. She is, it was, not sure if she’s still there, extremely defensive and doesn’t listen to parent concerns. Next the swim, the swim lesson instructor we had was amazing; only reason I’m giving one star. When my child started to refuse to participate in class after months of lessons on the first day of a new session I was finally able to track down the swim director, who also never answers the phone or responds to emails, and let her know we needed a refund and to pull out. She said we could be credited and use the balance toward something else in the future. She then suggested a private lesson saying she would talk to the teacher and get back to me before the next class. Never heard from her despite calling several times leaving a message and emailing. It has now been three weeks we haven’t been in class, still haven’t heard from her at all. The low income “discount” is hardly a 20% discount and you cannot get priority in signing up for classes if you need this discount because you have to do it in person or via phone vs people signing up at midnight paying full price. I have had so many more issues with this place but I am happy to report we canceled our membership and will never be back. I suggest finding another place this ymca is running itself into the ground with their terrible policies and even worse “leadership”

Cleanest, most up-to-date Y I've ever been to. There's a variety of equipment, a pool with a sauna, three large studios that are almost never busy, and a b-ball court. It's also a very friendly vibe and pulls in one of the most diverse crowds I've seen in Burlington.
With regards to some of the complaints in the other reviews: yes, it can get busy particularly when UVM is in session, but honestly I haven't had to wait more than 5 minutes for a piece of equipment more than a handful of times in the year and a half I've been going, and when I have there's plenty of mobility/stretching/accessory equipment to keep me occupied until, say, a bench frees up. And yes, there isn't a ton of parking right by the door but there's plenty of street parking within a block or two. At the end of the day, there aren't any other gyms in Burlington that provide the amount of variety, cleanliness, and friendly community that the Y does - I hardly think limited parking and five minutes added to a workout are dealbreaking cons when weighed against those pros.

I rarely visit the place due to the parking situation. Despite this, I maintain a membership because my family enjoys family swim time, although it's the only time we go. To ensure we're on time, we have to arrive at least 30 minutes early to allow for parking and avoid any delays.

This place is a joke. A place where you can’t do heavy deadlifts is not something I called a gym, constant argue and discussion from the PTs working there when I did deadlifts that it’s too loud since they have some kind of “no drop” policy. (I never dropped the weight btw, I put it back gentle) but of course it will be some sound when you lift 400 pounds from the ground. If you can’t handle that then don’t call yourself a gym! This was a place for “families” they told me, so I am not a part of a family or what? Sad because they had platforms for deadlifts but you are not allowed to do them unless it’s super light weight that makes no sound 🤷♂️
That’s fine but then inform that before signing up people. At least the owner was friendly and gave me my joining fee back!
Also, Always overcrowded so takes away all the joy of training.

Good equipment, but it’s way to crowded. Definitely canceling my membership due to parking. More than half of the tiny parking lot is dedicated to preschool parking leaving no room for their members who come to work out to park in their lot. In addition on street parking is busy and usually metered or resident parking only. But the worst part of my experience here was being yelled at by a YMCA employee named Tony, enforcing parking who issued me a $65 ticket after me being parked 5 minutes too late in a preschool pick up spot. After noticing the ticket I asked him about how to appeal or lessen the ticket, only to get screamed at. If I were you I’d avoid any interactions with the parking employee named Tony unless you like getting screamed at.

Three stars for the overall experience, of which I'm assuming for most is to complete a solid workout in a decent amount of time. While this gym is centrally located and clean, offers lots of equipment, bathrooms, cardio and weight machines, free weights, and a nice indoor track; parking is very limited and most of the gym parking is reserved for school pick up. This gym is also insanely crowded during peak hours to where one must stand around and wait an unnacceptable amount of time for exercise equipment, free weights, or the racks. The cardio equipment usually opens up more quickly than the weights, but that only works if you come here specifcally for those machines - I do not. Additionally, peak hours are the only times I can make it to the gym, those hours being mornings, lunch time and evenings. From my experience, peak hours are the same between the week and weekend, although this place can still get pretty crowded during off peak weekend hours. I have no problem waiting a few minutes here and there to use equipment, but to have to stand around for anything longer than 10 minutes a pop is a waste of people's time and energy and defeats the purpose of a workout. I have only purchased day passes here for this very reason and am glad I haven't invested in a membership. It would be ideal if this place would consider capping the amount of people admitted per hour or by peak times. Otherwise, one doesn't have a sense of how croweded the gym is until after you've paid and walked up the stairs. Between an overcrowded gym and limited parking, this gym is more trouble than it is worth, personally. I'm on the hunt for other gyms in the local area.

Solid and varied equipment, it's just a matter of waiting for anything to be available. The gym really needs to put a cap on memberships. The only time I've been there and it wasn't packed was 30 min before close, and I don't even know what this place looks like during peak hours. If you have to drive here, get a membership somewhere else, because the parking lot is always full, and so is all the street parking (unless you want to pay for a metered spot). It would be a great gym if it wasn't always overpacked.

I got a membership at the Y within the past week and a half and already am a bit disappointed,
the abundance of members around 4-7pm is extremely frustrating. i honestly think they have too many members for their own good. put limits on time there or on equipment. no one is going to stand around for an hour waiting for a rack...
one of the female employees rudely and loudly shouted at my girlfriend after their log in scanner didn't work using her phone. my girlfriend didn't even say anything, just moved to the other scanner to try that one instead and before she could, the employee yelled at her..."THIS ONE WORKS!?"
don't get me started on the parking, half of the lot is dedicated to child drop off or just child based cars as far as i can see which leaves practically no room for other members to park. the Y sends an email this morning asking members to be more aware of the lot and not wait for spots, but would rather have us doing merry go-round until a spot is open, but that's when you have college students ramming in front of you. it's just NOT a good set-up, that's all there is to it. it won't ever be.
all and all, they have some good equipment, up-to-date stuff, a gym, pool, classes, but all these things add up and ruin the experience. for the price i'm paying, i don't think i'll be continuing my membership, i pay $1.50 for parking 3-4 days a week to workout for an hour there, that's $24 A MONTH on top of the $50ish membership price. hate to complain this much in a review, but i feel its important for new-comers to know

I’ve been loving the Y for a good while. Swimming here has been my refuge from the chaos of life for years, but particularly during the pandemic. I love coming into contact with a wide breath of folks from our community. One time there were three swimmers in the lap pool: a young man in his teens, a middle-aged man, and an elderly man in his eighties. The circle of life doing laps. Of course I’ve had a glitch once in a while, but these are, by and far, surpassed by the good experiences I’ve had there.

The rating is because as someone who’s there 5 times a week it’s pretty frustrating how little parking they have. 2-3 times a week i have to park either on the street where i have to pay or in a parking lot 5 blocks away. It may be the time i’m there, so it’s possible other times of day aren’t as bad, but still.

If you’re a YMCA member in good standing and need a place to workout when you travel, stop by the Greater Burlington YMCA (on the corner of College St and S.Union Street). Didn’t include pictures from the inside but they have an excellent lap pool as well as weights (free and Cybex type circuits) as well as cardio equipment.
The staff is very helpful and great at getting you set up in the system if you’re from out of town. They do not have a parking lot so you’ll have to use a meter (25 cents for 15 minutes) or find a parking lot that doesn’t charge you for the first two hours.

I went to the YMCA during the winter of 2013-14. I then stopped going and assumed since I had paid my balance ahead of time that my bill was satisfied. This winter I went back to renew my membership and I was told I had a balance of $20 from the previous year "because you have to give a 30-day cancellation notice." I said that I would gladly pay it and I was surprised nobody had sent me a bill or attempted to call me. They said that "because of people not paying their bills" I was now required to use a bank account instead of cash to pay my membership fees. I refused as I prefer to use cash at places with questionable security standards. I contacted the director, Jaime, to see if she could make an exception. She offered to transfer me to the billing department as "she does not handle these types of things." I said yes please and instead she disconnected the call.
To summarize: The reception staff were not knowledgeable or helpful. The YMCA is silly to expect me to enter my bank account information into their computer system for a $20/month membership fee. The director apparently was incapable of handling my issue and instead of transferring me ended the call. I am deeply dissatisfied. I wouldn't expect much from a cheap public gym, but the Burlington YMCA has managed to surprise me with their low quality of customer service.
