A virtual wonderland of fitness and wellness, GMCF has got everything you need or could possibly dream of needing, a positive, upbeat atmosphere, and a sense of community. The energy is infections. There are infinite classes to choose from and ample space to do your own thing with all the equipment you need. I also feel like I make new friends there weekly because everyone is in a great mood due to the empowering and supportive atmosphere! I love GMCF.

THE place in central Vermont for fitness enthusiasts, crossfitters, swimmers, and pickle ballers. Tennis is no more at the former Wedgewood, but the upgrades, design, staff, and equipment are unrivaled. Pricey, but the value is actually quite good considering all this club offers.

This place is great, the trainers are incredible. First off I've never been a gym person at all... but I started slow with a 'Get Fit' class and felt welcomed and at home. There is none of the BS you hear of in gyms, just a focus on people, getting into shape, and having a good time doing it. If you're even considering starting working out you should put this place on the top of your list. The people are welcoming and will meet you at whatever level you're at!

Green Mountain Community Fitness (GMCF) in Berlin, Vermont, is hands-down one of the best places I’ve ever been to for staying active—and I don’t say that lightly. After years away from the pool since my high school swimming days, I finally got back in the water and rediscovered my love for swimming. GMCF made that journey not just possible, but truly enjoyable.

Let’s start with the aquatics department—it’s phenomenal. Over the past few years, the team has poured so much hard work into transforming it into something super special. The pool is modern, clean, and inviting, a testament to what they’ve accomplished on a tight budget. Whether you’re a seasoned swimmer or just dipping your toes back in like me, this is a space where you can thrive. The staff? Absolute rockstars. They’re friendly, knowledgeable, and always ready to lend a hand—whether it’s refining your stroke or just making you feel at ease. It’s clear they love what they do, and it shows.

As a parent to a 56-week-old and a 3½-year-old preschooler, I can’t tell you how much it means to find a place that’s perfect for families. GMCF isn’t just for adults—it’s built for all ages. The programs and facilities make it easy for kids to get active, and I’m already counting the days until I can bring mine here full-time when they’re a bit older. It’s such a relief to know they’ll grow up in a space that’s not only fun but surrounded by positivity and encouragement.

Speaking of positivity, the staff and other patrons are incredible. Everyone I’ve met here—whether it’s someone sharing a lane or offering a quick “nice job!”—is friendly and supportive. It’s the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to come back day after day. The staff go above and beyond to ensure you feel welcome, and the other members make it feel like a real community. It’s more than a gym; it’s a place where you belong.

What really seals the deal for me is GMCF’s inclusive nature. This isn’t just a fitness center—it’s a place that celebrates everyone. From the visible support for the LGBTQIA+ community to the Black Lives Matter signs and more, it’s clear that diversity is a priority here. It feels like a space where all people are not just accepted but embraced. That’s something I’m proud to be a part of, and it makes every swim feel even more meaningful.

GMCF has done so much with what they have, and the results speak for themselves. The facilities are top-notch, the people are amazing, and the vibe is unbeatable. I can’t say enough good things about this place—it’s where I’ve rediscovered my passion for swimming, and it’s where I can’t wait to bring my kids to share in the fun. If you’re looking for a fitness center that’s welcoming, family-friendly, and genuinely special, Green Mountain Community Fitness is it.

GMCF is an amazing facility. The new (relatively) owners have transformed an aging Gym into a top notch community center focused on fitness and wellness. GMCF offers more than just a towel and a treadmilll. Honestly, my favorite service is the massage therapist and relief i get from each visit. The owner's journey to transform the facility recently resulted in the rennovation of their pool which is fantastic! Staff are pleasant, friendly, and professional. I have chronic back issues, and their staff provided me with an individual plan to help me improve my core strength and has totally improved my mobility and flexibilty. Oh, and check out their lobby! Locarno's To Go meals: dinners, pizza to cook at home and even sandwiches. Clearly no "lunks" at GMCF!

I love this gym so much. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The classes are varied and there is something for anyone’s level of fitness. The fit4life is perfect for me at my age (62) because it challenges me but doesn’t make me feel discouraged. The instructor Sara (Fridays) is a wonderful coach who is always cheerful and motivational and very attentive. The lounge is a great feature for hanging out after or before work outs and the coffee station is a huge plus. They also have a catering service that provides meals regularly that you can diy purchase. This gym has EVERYTHING.

I see people complaining about the mold on the shower curtains and on the bathroom tile. All I can say is that it is an old building that is constantly being improved. I can also add that some people love to complain and that is too bad. It is a gym, not an operating room. Give them a break and instead of hate, appreciate.

GMCF is an exceptional full-service wellness center that truly has something for everyone. Whether you're new to fitness or a seasoned pro, their diverse range of activities ensures there’s always an option to match your goals and interests. The staff at GMCF are incredible—caring, kind, and completely judgement-free. They serve as supportive mentors who are genuinely invested in helping you succeed, no matter where you’re starting from.

One of my favorite things about GMCF is the variety of movement options available. Whether you prefer state-of-the-art apparatus, dynamic group classes, personalized one-on-one training, or designing your own program, GMCF provides a well-rounded environment that caters to every preference.

Another standout feature is the beautifully multigenerational community. GMCF welcomes people of all ages and fitness levels, fostering a unique sense of belonging and connection. Personally, I’ve built lasting friendships here that go far beyond the gym experience.

What truly sets GMCF apart from the average gym is the opportunity it provides to not only achieve fitness goals but also explore new skills and capabilities in a supportive, encouraging space. GMCF feels like much more than a wellness center—it’s a place to grow, learn, and thrive. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a holistic, inspiring, and inclusive fitness community!

TL;DR this place is nasty. The pool is a health hazard, cleaning the equipment is an afterthought, the free weights area is barely lit, and the locker rooms are a biohazard.

We were excited to have a place to take our small child to swim this winter but due to the unsanitary state of the place we canceled our membership two days in (we singed up trusting everything was normally maintained - they made us pay two months to cancel two days in).

I’ve been an athlete for many years. I’ve swam miles per week at many pools. The only times I’ve experienced pools this nasty have been at low rent hotels.

Hint: When you smell an indoor pool, you’re primarily smelling chloramines, not the chlorine itself. Chloramines form when chlorine reacts with organic matter like sweat, oils, or urine in the water, producing that distinct “pool smell.” Ironically, a strong chloramine odor often means the pool needs more chlorine to fully break down these compounds and ensure proper sanitation.

Poor ventilation exacerbates this issue. Without adequate fresh air circulation, chloramines can accumulate above the pool surface, creating a stronger smell and irritating the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. Proper ventilation systems and regular introduction of fresh air are crucial in indoor pools to reduce chloramine buildup and maintain healthier air quality.

…Dartmouth aquatic center is lovely!

Meh. The showers and curtains are absolutely teeming with mostly red and some black mold, not to mention soap scum. The curtains are left open for some bizarre reason, trapping moisture in the folds, and it is abundantly evident that neither they nor the showers themselves have been cleaned since I started coming here. The towels often smell of mildew, are clearly not bleached, and are barely larger than hand towels - they do not even reach halfway around my body and I'm average-sized. The locker rooms are filled with toxic fragrances, as everywhere, and the soap provided is the cheapest and most toxic of anything you can get. For a hundred bucks a month, I feel I deserve better, and certainly shouldn't have to pay for the crappy, over-roasted and then burned black coffee, but hey, at least the water is hot, which is why I'll stay here over planet fitness, even though they have MUCH cleaner showers.

Edited for response: I am adding photos of a bit of shower curtain and mold and scum and hair that have all been in the exact same place for at least as long as I have been coming here (over 3 months). All of these photos are from a single shower but these gross molds and scums are everywhere. I just got quick examples from one stall, and these photos are taken one week after my original review and a week after you said you would address these "claims." You cannot simply say that they are cleaned every night and convince me of that despite the evidence in front of my eyeballs. Clearly, you're either not getting what you're paying for with cleaning or you aren't paying enough. Those curtains have not been cleaned once in 3 months -they have the same scum and mold plus more since I arrived. And the black mold and hair everywhere is... Unpleasant to say the least. Look at all that hair in the corner and along the bottom edge! Gross.

Also, it is a common misconception in America that "dark" roast means "stronger." It does not, and it, in fact, burns all of the actual smooth, nutty flavor that is coffee out. You're simply showing your ignorance with this response -of both coffee and of how unclean your showers are. Furthermore, a "perk" is not something you have to pay for.

I approached this gym optimistically and with an open mind as the photos online made it look incredible. It also takes a lot for me to leave a review of anything in the first place, let alone an entirely negative review. Now, with that context out of the way, here’s my experience.

I showed up at the gym looking to check it out, get a day pass. Day pass is $21 – definitely a bit high and this number isn’t listed on their website anywhere. They didn’t respond to my email from earlier in the day asking about day pass pricing, which in combination with the lack of pricing on the website screams of those manipulative gym tactics designed to get you in through the front door.

They also didn’t inform me that all the nice wood floor studios which I was particularly interested in as a dancer who likes private workouts aren’t available outside of class time until after I paid. I kind of just shrugged it off. One of the staff members insisted that there were other spots that would work for my needs and led me to… a pickle ball court.

When I asked if opening up the nice studios was something they ever did or planned on doing in the future, the staff member informed me that it’s not an option because there are no cameras in any of them. Another little piece of information that would have been AWESOME to mention on the website. Ultimately, I drove twenty minutes and paid $21 for access to a humid and dirty pickle ball court.

I was still in mindset of “let’s have a workout, let’s work up a sweat,” and that lasted for… about fifteen minutes. A rather grumpy middle-aged woman came up to me to inform me that the court was reserved, my music was too loud, and I shouldn’t be doing “that sort of thing” there anyway. She suggested that maybe one of the studios would be a better fit! What a fantastic suggestion! Damn, how did I not think of that?

So I basically spent $21 for fifteen minutes of subpar exercise. The website suggests that the monthly rate is $87-100 as of writing this review and I honestly can’t imagine ever paying that for this “quality” of service. I’d rather work out in my backyard.

I went here on a day pass while visiting Vermont. I’ve been weightlifting at various gyms for the past 20 years and this was one of the best gyms I’ve been to. They have an excellent variety of equipment, especially for strength training. Whatever I need for my workout, I found—including hard to find equipment like the arm straps used for leg raises. They also had a lot of high quality equipment like rogue bumper plates and squat racks. Add in the sauna, towel service; salt water pool, hot tub, and this gym left me wanting nothing. Their staff was also super friendly and accommodating after I forgot my fitness tracker in the sauna. My visit made me want to move to Vermont so I could become a regular member of this excellent fitness center.

We aren’t from the area and have felt homesick often, but finding such a well-equipped gym that also allows me to bring my little one made a huge difference in making me feel like there was somewhere familiar to regularly go. It beats any gym I’ve gone to in big cities. I do wish there was a childcare service option, and the pool area smell tends to give me a headache. I hoped that would improve after they switched to salt-chemistry but the chlorine smell is still quite strong - all to say I think some additional ventilation in that area would be really helpful. Otherwise the gym is fantastic and I’m grateful to have found it.

Lots of class offerings, both in person and online. The fitness area is huge and wide open with garage doors that can be rolled up on warmer days. It feels very airy. They are making every effort to ensure safety and mask wearing.
