What an awesome club of fabulous people! I had always wanted to try dragon boat paddling, and after moving to Vermont last year I found Malia online. When I showed up at a random Saturday recreation paddle everyone was incredibly welcoming and friendly, and I’ve been hooked ever since. It’s a fabulous community of folks, a great way to move your body, and a beautiful spot to do it all in.

I joined the team in 2023 and participated in the Rec Program and loved being part of the team and came to really enjoy dragon boat paddling! The following season and this season-I participated on the Community Racing Trac, and it has been a great and positive experience. I wish I had known about Malia sooner! I have come to truly enjoy the sport! The coaches are awesome- very knowledgeable and extremely patient and encouraging! (I'm not the quickest learner- or most coordinated when it comes to sports), but- they continue to work with me and guide me to be a better paddler- I am very grateful! Also, my fellow TEAM Members are AMAZING! What a welcoming and caring group of paddlers! If you are wondering if dragon boat paddling is for you- just join and give the sport a try!

Best, internationally experienced coaches on the lake. If you are in search of a new exhilarating sport and/or want to compete and race with the best, this is your group. Coaches have international experience.

I joined Malia as a recent transplant from Western Mass who loves distance canoeing. I have spent the last four seasons training alongside found family to be a better athlete. We may not be the biggest game in town, but what we lack in numbers we make up for in attitude and drive to be awesome.

As a complete newbie to the sport I wasn't sure how to join an established team, but Malia made it easy. The Beginner Bootcamp program offered was an excellent introduction to the sport, and the entire team is friendly and welcoming. It didn't take long to feel like I was part of the team, and Liisa's coaching has me progressing quickly with my paddling form. Plus it's a ton of fun!

I joined this team after participating in the bootcamp over the summer and I haven't looked back since! I was looking for a new hobby, and was a little apprehensive about joining a sports club since I don't consider myself to be particularly athletic, but from the very beginning everyone was so welcoming. There's a place for you no matter your age, fitness level or sporting experience. The club is filled with really interesting and fun people who are also very encouraging, and I am so excited to continue training with them!

I 🩷 this club! Liisa is an outstanding coach and this club is inclusive and fun! there’s an assortment of levels of participation from casual Saturday paddling to serious racing. The only way I can keep myself as fit as possible is to be accountable to a team. You can try it for free!!!

I’m a visiting RN to the area and wanted to try a sport I knew nothing about. The team welcomed me with open arms and I was given great instructions and was able to try it out before I committed. The commitment was made after the first paddle session. The coach and all the team members supported the new and experienced members and it was great to be apart of the team. If you are curious about Dragon Boat racing don’t look any further!! Join this team and you will be better person for doing so. Even though I’m not a permanent VT resident I will try to come back to paddle every season if I’m lucky to be relocated to the area anytime in the future!

I never liked team sports before. Dragonboating is different. There are no stars. Each paddler (of 20) must work in sync with the others. That's the key to winning a race: simple, no? Plus, there's sunshine, beautiful scenery, camaraderie, adrenaline (in races), and fitness, especially core. If you're not fit already, get fit and happy; if you're fit already, be fit and use it happily: sign up!! ;-)

The right mixture of competition and conviviality! So happy to paddle with them now for 4 years. And I just never tire of being on Lake Champlain all summer with this wacky and hardworking group.

Liisa and her crew are an awesome group of people that are extremely supportive and encouraging of anyone wishing to paddle with them. The club has both a more professional team full of expert racers and a sports team for those who want to learn, but might not have the time or ability to perform at the highest competition level.

I expressed interest at an info kiosk they had. I was welcomed right away at my first practice with the group and found Liisa to be an excellent and highly effective coach (and mentor to me). All the paddlers are very nice, kind, and friendly.

There are several times a year where newcomers are invited to try paddling/drumming and see what Mālia is all about. I highly encourage anyone interested in this fun sport to check them out. I'm personally thrilled to have found them!

I was looking for something a little bit more than a once a year event, and found Malia. These guys love paddling. The focus is on growing a group of like minded individuals into a cohesive team. I've met people I would never have otherwise, and can now call them some of the most important people in my life. Very welcoming group.

I joined Malia Paddling and Racing Club at its inception and I've been an active member since.

I joined because I was excited about the prospect of being coached by world champions who cut their teeth in the world-leader Canadian dragon boat system.

I stay because of that top-notch coaching; because of the excellent program that keeps us progressing as paddlers and athletes; and because of the welcoming group of athletes who have become family.
