I used to rate this gym 5 stars, but it’s gone downhill. Kids run around on the equipment with no one watching them — and if their parents are here, they must be far away. I saw the manager mention that kids 9–13 can use the equipment, but if that’s the case, will there be more staff to clean afterward? I watched two kids use almost eight machines in ten minutes. Guests use chalk and leave it everywhere. People set up tripods in the middle of the floor, and some even work out in the sauna or record in the locker rooms. Workers don’t seem to care and are on their phones. I hope they work on making this place feel professional and comfortable for all.

Been going here for years and watched the quality of the gym decline due to horrible management. I canceled my membership here and will go to a different gym. While using out the remainder of my membership because they make you pay for at least 1 more month after cancelling, there are kids just running around the gym and playing of the equipment people are trying to use. When I told the guy at the front desk today, he shrugged me off and said there wasn’t anything he could/would do about it and pretty much acted like he didn’t care. I recommend golds or even planet over this terrible excuse for a gym.

Friendliest gym ever...dude with the mustache who covers the front is so nice but they all make a point to say hi and bye. Other locations sometimes don't even acknowledge you are waiting to be scanned in. All this location needs is racquetball and pool and pickleball courts and a 1 mile indoor track and fight class and it will destroy the vcc and short pump location.

After nearly 2 decades, I received a call from management. I was told not to return to the gym because of repeat issues. I was totally confused. Yes, there were repeat incidents. However, in neither incident was I the aggressor. AND to add insult to injury, they refused to return the 209.95 I had on my account.

The 1st assault, I had to telephone the police because the staff stood right in front of the person, while she harassed me and did NOTHING! Even after telling staff, she kicked me in my lower back a week earlier.
BTW: nothing was done to this woman who assaulted and harassed me.

In the 2nd incident, a woman refused to allow me access to the diabled shower--which is the last shower stall. She emptied out her bags and had the contents spread across the floor strategically so you couldn't pass without her hitting her stuff with my mobility scooter. Again, there was no assistance; no management was in the building! The police had to be called because she also attacked the young man working the front desk.
BTW: To this day, no one from AFF has asked me what transpired.

I see why all my elderly and disabled pool pals left AFF and are all at the YMCA.

YMCA is way more friendly and caring to these groups.

AmFam really exceeds my expectations. The facility is very clean and well maintained. The equipment is up to date and staff is regularly seen wiping down the machines. We are currently signed up for a personal trainer and would recommend.

This gym has fallen apart in the last year. Price is expensive, gym is always packed, machines randomly broken or have signs on them showing they can’t be used, sauna is dirty, among many other things. A lot of older/elderly people use this gym and if you go on your phone for 30 seconds between a set on a machine or if you’re on the machine for more than 5 minutes, they will come up to you and bother you for every set until they get the machine. The worst thing however is that recently the gym has started closing early and closing on random days of the week, without any notice at all. I’ve seen people show up to the gym at 6:50pm on a Thursday and they close at 7:00pm randomly when their hours say they close much later. On top of this, there is no refund or prorated membership cost even though they are closing on random days and not being available for their advertised time. I could definitely see this gym falling into the same category as Golds/Planet fitness in the next couple of months if management doesn’t find a way to stay open on advertised hours and limit the amount of people that are going to the gym, honestly if that means raising the pricing to make it inaccessible then they may have to do that because too many people go to this gym now.

I’ve been wanting to write this review for a while, and after 3+ years and several gyms later, I’m finally getting around to it.

In short, this is the best gym you’ll get in THIS location.

Pros
• CLEANLINESS & PROFESSIONALISM: This is by far the CLEANEST gym I’ve been to, and it’s always well-kept. AMFAM—whether at this location or any other—has always been spotless! And yes, I’ve been to the Y and Gold’s Gym… disgusting! AMFAM, hands down, wins in this category.
• Space & Equipment Availability: Even during peak hours, there’s plenty of space, and multiple pieces of equipment are available to target the areas you want to work on. You’re never completely out of options.
• Helpful Staff: There’s always someone available to assist you or answer any questions.

Cons
• Pricing: It feels overpriced considering the gym’s smaller size compared to other AMFAM locations. I understand it’s a satellite location, but I wish there were an option for those who ONLY want to use THIS location, with other locations as an add-on.
• Childcare: When I brought my child, the childcare area was either understaffed (closing early) or completely closed due to no staff. I’ve only experienced this issue at THIS location.
• Equipment Maintenance: Some equipment has been worn down or broken over time. For the most part, they’ve addressed it, but it’s still something to keep in mind.
• Gym Etiquette: A lot of younger gym-goers sit on machines for long periods, texting between sets. I see this at other gyms too, but it’s particularly annoying here. I wish there were better ways to encourage people to move when they’re not actively using equipment.
• Cleaning Supplies: They used to provide cloths and sprays at every machine, then removed the cloths but kept the sprays. Now, even those are gone. Not sure what happened, but I wish they’d bring back a better system for wiping down equipment.

Other Gyms (For Comparison)

I didn’t want to embed these comments into my AMFAM review, but here’s how it compares to other gyms in the area:
• Gold’s Gym (Walmart Marketplace Location): I’m sorry, but NO. Yes, it’s open 24 hours, which I LOVE, but unless you’re going between 2–4 AM, it’s way too busy. The machines are filthy—I literally watched someone from the cleaning staff wipe a machine, and the water in the bucket was BROWN! Trash cans overflow, ventilation is dusty, and overall, it’s just nasty. I really tried because I wanted that 24/7 perk, but I couldn’t do it. I can only HOPE and dream that AMFAM gives us a 24-hour experience one day. That would even offset the fact that they’re small and don’t have a pool.
• Gold’s Gym (General): Yes, they have tons of equipment, but during regular peak hours (before/after work, after dinner, late evening), it’s PACKED. It honestly feels like a club from back in the day. You walk in, and there are women and young ladies just hanging around chatting and trying to get attention. It’s Club Gold’s for sure! And don’t get me started on the parking—it’s madness. People literally MAKE their own parking spots, blocking driving lanes just to avoid walking across neighboring parking lots.
• The Y: Even with renovations underway, the pool is nasty—paint chips everywhere, slime dripping from the pipes, everything looks worn and used. The locker rooms are old and grimy, the sauna door doesn’t even close properly, and it’s tiny! The workout area is cramped, but I can see that improving with renovations. The real issue? The staff. Either they flirt inappropriately, coaches ghost the classes you sign up for, or staff members give you attitude when you ask questions. I really tried to stick it out at both the Y and Gold’s, but I always ended up back at AMFAM.

If AMFAM had a pool, a court, and/or was open 24/7, the price would be completely justifiable. Other than that, it’s still the best option you’ll get in THIS area.

Oh, and yes, I’ve tried Burn—it’s amazing but just not my type of workout facility. But hey, whatever works for you!

I’ve been coming to this gym for a few years with my wife. We generally use the side room to do core exercises and we’re disappointed to see these rooms are now closed unless you buy personal training. When we signed up for this gym, we did it because these rooms offered more space and equipment for core exercises. Very disappointed and hope these rooms are re-opened for people who already pay a lot compared to other gyms for a membership here.

I have been a member here for years and loved it until recently they enacted a new policy closing off any of the side rooms to member use. When I joined this gym it was specifically because of some of the specialty equipment and space available for use. This new policy has made it so that there is not enough space and equipment for the current volume of members. It’s very disappointing to see this from what was such a great environment. Now there are members blocking walking paths whenever it’s busy due to there not being enough space. There is a shortage of equipment. It no longer is worth the monthly cost of a membership.

I hate that they only have 4 good treadmills (alpine runners), 5 when they are all working. They recently got a bunch of new treadmills but sadly they suck. Super basic. No decline, no TV/scenery screen. The original ones were so much nicer. They're always occupied by walkers, that could just as easily use the cheaper ones.

I went to view the facility since it is closest to my home, but didn’t realize that they do not have the same amenities as the other location but you are paying the same price. I understand that I can use the other locations, but to me it doesn’t make sense to pay the same thing as someone who can go to their location near their home with a pool and basketball and more space for the same price. The staff member who took me around was nice though and overall it looked like a nice place besides the locker room which smelled really bad. I know it’s a gym but it didn’t seem like it was cleaned.

I started coming here because I wasn't getting results from riding my bicycle anymore. I felt stuck, and I felt like I was wasting time. I started training with Taylor a few months ago, and I'm getting amazing results. Taylor understands my goals and does a great job keeping me on track and always pushes me to go farther then I ever would on my own. Each session is unique, so it stays interesting, and I always feel like I'm learning something new. Taylor is a great motivator and she really cares about my progress, my form, and my safety. She catches my mistakes and corrects them before they become bad habits or wasted energy. I get the most out of the time I spend at amfamfit because of Taylor. Thanks!!! Great gym. More than enough machines, weights etc so that you can usually get on the exact exercise you want (except the bicep curl machines, which are ALWAYS occupied *eye roll* 😅). If the station or equipment you need is occupied there is still almost always going to be something similar to use without feeling like you're compromising your workout. I used to be a member of the Y and this was a huge probelm at that gym. There's already an extremely limited amount of equipment, and inconsiderate members superset and camp. Theres also a huge problem with dropping weights, leaving plates racked, etc. Forget all that, AmFam all day.

I attend this gym with my accountability partner who is a member of AM Fam. I am a member of Planet fitness. We tend to go back and forth to each gym because there both different and have features we both like. However yesterday Am Fam decided that even though my accountability partner pays like 300 a month (she has a family package) she can only bring a guest once a month or you have too pay 20$ if you want to come more than once, this was explained by the rude gym attendant at the desk yesterday. I usually go with her twice a month the rest is at my gym as it's bigger. But why is it that with my gym I pay 25$ a month can bring a guest anytime and my friend pays 300$ a month and can bring a guest once a month that's ridiculous. Am fam may have a sauna and pools at some locations but there definitely too expensive and ride to guests.

The thing I like about the fitness club is that their are six facilities throughout the Richmond area, so depending upon where you are in the greater Richmond area your membership is good. Love the classes and the app to sign up for the classes; step, cycling, aerobics, yoga etc. Plenty of fitness equipment (at all facilities) and if you can't get in shape there, you just didn't try hard enough. Can be pricey but great place to meet others that are fitness enthusiasts. Not a muscle bound, hard-core gym but a place where you can feels comfortable working out.

One year in I have to update this review. I went and got my group ex certificate after I had been in conversation with the group ex Manager Kris about teaching a hip hop dance class. After many conversations, she finally told me that Hip hop does not have a place in her gym because of her clientele. There's only one way to take that. They only cater to old and white, which is sad because there are young brown people giving them $100 plus each month. Most members are nice and they have some really nice staff, but I could not continue with a gym that is openly discriminatory. I hope all people of color read and cancel and or find another place to workout.

Rushed Out. A rude employee interrupted and stopped my workout so they could make sure I was aware they close in 15 minutes when I was fully aware. They turned all the lights off 15 minutes prior to coming to tell me also. No patience and wanting to rush people out before posted closing time. I pay a large amount compared to other gyms (55$ more a month) that are open 24 hours... unacceptable.

I called the number as requested and asked to speak to a general manager. I was told "THEY ARE NOT THERE AND THEY ARE ON VACATION." I was told it was "UNFORTUNATE" that I would be told to call but they are not there and won't be for some time.

I signed up for the gym membership yesterday and this morning I went to the gym and they said my membership was not activated yet and would not let me workout even though I showed them I signed up the day prior and I was told I would be able to workout today. I pleaded with the guy to let me workout because I do have a membership and I just took my preworkout and my hotel’s gym was closed due to Covid and he still said no. Used to be very clean, comfortable, and equipment in great shape. I had them at 5 Stars. I have been a member here in Chester since 2011 when they first opened. No longer. Equipment is no longer being fixed in a timely manner. TVs on some of the treadmills and ellipticals no longer working.
We are charged a yearly fee for cleaning yet they were closed for 3 months and no cleaning was being done but they won't refund (pro rata) for the time they weren't cleaning.
Customer service is very, very slow (you must freeze or cancel you membership online ONLY. Customer service won't help with that. I've been trying to cancel my membership for weeks now without any reply. Next step is the Better Business Bureau.
This used to be a good company and great workout place but they have let their customers down. So sad.

How do I cancel my account for this company? I've called several times over the last couple of months and no one called me back. They continued to charge my bank account. And Carlos is going to continue to charge my bank account, although I have made formal notification that I no longer live in the area. Someone received the many messages I left and ignored them. Now its costing me the monthly membership fee and an additional 100 dollars. So, this will go on until someone acknowledges the messages and the request to cancel the membership. Is there someone the in corporate office that assist. The local management is insistent that they did not receive my messages and they are in the right to charge me for March and continue to charge me.

Myself and my wife have been members for the past 5 years, due to the COVID-19 we decided to put a complete gym in our home. I have never had an issue and have always loved the service given at this location along with others. We decided to cancel our membership due to this continuing COVID-19 situation and I went into the gym to complete this process. The front desk was very helpful when calling Mr. Tyler to the front to assist me. Once I was in the office with Mr. Tyler, sad to say that I have never in my life been so disrespected and spoken to like I was beneath him. In some environments my intensity is seen as intimidating and they're not appreciative of it in staff or clientele. As a long time member of American Family Fitness (10+ years), I give 5 STARS(⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) to all AMFAM locations. I currently visit the Chester location several times a week, and I must say every time I walk in that door, I am greeted with many smiling faces. Thank you for always helping me to feel welcome and appreciated!🙂

Let me start by saying how much I like American Family Fitness and have been a member for over 15 years.
The Associates at the desk are always polite and professional and the instructors are very knowledgeable and make everyone feel comfortable.
This gym is the closest to me , However this is my least favorite gym in the Richmond area as it is not 24 hours and I almost always go at night .
Most disappointing is that it does not have a pool.
It also feels a bit tight and smaller then other AFF.

Just got signed up today. The membership guy Tyler was really easy going, explained details well, gave an excellent tour, and was really likable. Top notch customer service. The facility is clean, and has a chill atmosphere.

They feature a juice/shake bar, a nice lobby, every weight setup and machine you can think of, and very clean locker room with sauna. The kid zone is pretty cool, with a full schedule of activities and friendly staff. None of the kids in there looked less than happy, so another plus for the busy parent!

The sign up process is streamlined and easy, featuring mostly a digital format. They have have a discounted military membership, which is nice. Yes, you can use it if retired with the DD Form 2 (Retired ID).

All in all, I’m excited to start working out here, since as a disabled vet I’ve kind of let myself go (by my standards). There are people of all ages, shapes, sizes working out there happily. So no worries if you aren’t a gym rat. The only gym rat types I saw didn’t appear stuck up or self absorbed and were quick to toss a wave or a bro-nod.

This gym is always clean and well maintained, seems brand new. Have every machine I could possibly want and a large, open, weight area. My kids enjoy going to the gym and spending time in the Kid Zone. The Kid Zone staff are the best! Always greet my children by name and take good care.

I love this gym. So many amenities. And the fact that the facility in colonial height stays open 24 hrs is superb! At times when I have too much on my mind and can't sleep, I hit the gym.

This gym has such a great atmosphere. The front desk staff will greet you when you come in and tell you to enjoy your workout. The locker rooms are very clean and there is always an employee in there cleaning. I like how the women’s sauna is separate from the men’s. The gym isn’t overcrowded, so I can get in and finish my workout without waiting to use equipment. Employees are also always on he floor wiping down equipment and keeping weights organized. Lisa and Aprell are amazing individuals and have wonderful personalities! They were very specific about membership details and fees. I have nothing to complain about!
