There’s something wrong at this gym , there a family changing room just for families, while I was there I saw 5 guys getting in and out with no kids , I got uncomfortable because I have a kid.

Visited this location because I happened to be in the area. Facilities wise, it's a pretty compact layout, but they have pretty much everything you need. There is a pool and a basketball court. Weights on the ground floor, treadmills and cardio on the 2nd level. Some of the weight equipment is older, but they do have some newer equipment as well. They also have a nice children's area with an outdoor playground. Locker rooms are pretty large.

This fitness center has everything you need. I tried others around the area and this one is the best. Pool and sauna is a bonus to have. Staff are knowledgeable and always willing to help in every form of way. They have a very nice kids zone! Basketball court is another bonus. Give this place a try!

Closes at 8pm on a saturday?? Pretty uncompromising, nonetheless I arrive at 742pm. The manager was very rude and refused me access to use the facilities. The extreme rules and policies combined with the unprofessional and petty management make paying over $100 dollars a month to hold a memebership here a complete waste of money.

I was actually going to become a member even though I didn’t like the way the membership was structured until I showed up at 5:30 am and was turned away because membership doesn’t come in until 9. Had a pass and everything. Didn’t even offer a solution as I drove from Chesterfield. Woman says it happens all the time. My question was, why not do something about it? That was my decision maker. I believe AMFAM is one of the best gyms out there. The only reason I didn’t leave a 5 star rating is because of the trainer they set me up with. I didn’t set up the appointment. I believe it’s just standard to meet with a trainer when you first sign up. I was told that the appointment was going to be an hour long & that he was going to show me how the equipment works. When I told him I couldn’t afford a personal trainer right now & that I just wanted to workout on my own he responded “well when do you think you’re going to have the money for a trainer” I told him I wasn’t sure. He was very upset, grabbed his things & walked out. I haven’t been back since. It took me so long to build up the strength to walk in a gym or anywhere in public. That one meeting knocked all of it out of me. I would maybe try again some day but not at this location because of the trainer.

The flat benches in the weight area are not in good placement. I did advise management of this. They are married to the Hoist Multi Jungle system. I feel like they were moved two inches apart. You have no space to move around and it’s unsafe. Please rearrange urgently!! People do not need to step over or around each other or your equipment, it’s a safety risk! I was told that cable tv will only be in the cardio area, and they can’t put paper towel wall mounts because of a paint job? There are barely any snack/food options to purchase. No great way to fill larger water bottles. Quit cutting silly corners/costs or you will lose customers, again! You are supposed to be the top notch facility!

Contacted the colonial heights police about a possible 4th degree misdemeanor (exposure of private parts). Police did nothing and referred me to the magistrate.

They need to repair the camera in the sauna and enforce their dress code. Maybe relocate the sauna in the locker rooms like their other locations.

I am extremely dissatisfied with this facility since I have joined. There weights are out dated some are hard to use there jacuzzi has stayed down more than up. I have neck back and legs issues after excersing and using the sauna I need the Jacuzzi. I have gone to there other facilities like short pump, swift creek, Mechanicville, and Midlothian all of these facilities have jacuzzis with Jets colonial Heights facility so far is the only one that has pulsating Jets. These Jets don't help me . After calling corporate and being told I needed to speak to the Manager of the Facility in which I did he refuses to redirect how the Jets work. I have to drive 20 plus miles out of my way to other facilities which are actually much better than the one in colonial Heights. The Jacuzzi at colonial Heights was down almost a month not that long ago while it was down everything should have been addressed to make sure it was in working order . I called today Labor Day to make sure before I came there because I need a working Jacuzzi I was told it was up and running I get there exercise use sauna then go to use Jacuzzi the Jets don't work. The Manager that runs this facility won't accept making changes to the flow of the jet like all the other facilities have in the Richmond VA area. Plus the Jacuzzi stays down at this facility more than any of the others. Due to poor communication and maintenance. The other facilities are more updated and better taken care of. I had to give a rating of a 1 star to to this review but this facility deserves a 0.

If you compare American Family Fitness to the other local gyms, I would say they are great due to the cleanliness, full bathroom/locker room, and especially aquatic services. Classes are included in your membership fee. The downside are the pricey fees and hours. I thought after COVID, the hours would return to 24 hours during the week or at least extended. This is truly a disappointment. For those working families, I know that we miss the early morning hours and late nights. The other disappointment is the staff. You get a face when entering the door. Other than that, good luck with general assistance...us novice gymers are out of luck with help with equipment or just friendly advice to operate the equipment. Remember, for us novice users, the equipment can be intimating.

For the name having "family" in it, its not family friendly at all. The child room isn't open all the time for the kids, if the staff see the kids having any type of loud laughing play, they will tell them to stop, the family changing room is always full with single adults. The staff will blame "for kids safety" on everything, I guess my kids will have to go back and play inside the house (watching t.v) so they can "be safe". Very American of you. Then when I ask to cancel my membership they told me I can only cancel it if I have a doctor falsely write that I am disabled.

Im sick of the old outdated equipment and short hours. All of the other gyms went back to 24hrs a long time ago. The smoothie bar and a lot of the equipment has been removed which leaves large amounts of wasted space. Now there are several machines broken leaving more wasted space. Which means a waste of my time. Time that I can't ever get back.The kids pay the regular price but aren't allowed to come in every day. I pay $86 a month. This is ridiculous. In addition, annual maintenance and upkeep fees are deducted but nothing is maintained or kept up. Where are all of the members money going? It's getting worse every month. This used to be a great gym back in 2017. Now it's starting to feel like Snap Fitness. A few friends and the staff are the only good things to look forward to at AMFAM. Working out is no longer one of them. The entire staff are always pleasant and kind. Especially, John, Pricilla, Ms. Sharon, Danyelle, Lorenzo, and the cleaning ladies just to name a few. However, that's not enough to stay and get ripped off. I know myself and others are actively in pursuit of finding a new home gym.

The gym has declined every year ...from the old equipment they had from 20 years ago until now....everyday there is a ticket on something new that can't be used.Then it takes 6months or however long for it to get repaired if it does...been a member there for 20 years and still paying monthly like I just started a contract...lol it's ridiculous. Pros: The employees at this location are fantastic! Derek, Stan, Angie, Melissa, Lisa, James, Danielle, Daryl, Sam, Earlie, Emmanuel, and Issac are the best staff! I’ve been a member for many years and have been to all of the locations in Virginia. The colonial heights location has the best staff, by far.

Cons: They no longer are a 24 hour facility, the kidzone hours have been cut significantly and closed on Sundays. This location has old equipment and not as big of a variety to choose from. As of a family of 5 (in a contract) we are paying $114.00 a month.

The American Family Fitness Center located in Colonial Heights Va is not the best location to retain a membership. New management has come in and removed 40% of the workout equipment, leaving empty space on the floor. When questioned the decision about removing the equipment I was told, "they were duplicate machines and they were remodeling" .. Although they may have been duplicate machines in working a body part they worked that particular body part differently, giving you different results. As for remodeling, they have claimed remodeling for many years, the only thing we have seen is a coat of pant on the cardio deck! Even the cycle classes, the other gyms got new bikes.. Colonial Heights got the other gyms old bikes! You would think they would take better care of this gym as they have many individuals in the military utilizing this gym. This new management is not even around to discuss these decisions.. Often times in the back focusing on fixing the WRONG ISSUES! They have reduced the operation hours, cut childcare hours, taken 40% of the equipment and taken out the smoothie bar and yet we still pay the same as if all the amenities are offered as when we signed these "membership contracts".

The place was absolutely immaculate. Customer service was great. I went there for donating blood. But I did walk out. The woman who was in charge of the desk For the blood drive, she saw standing there and just proceeded to be on her phone sharing photos of something with another young lady who also was working there. There were 5 empty beds to be filled. When they did not acknowledge me I felt as if the emergency they posted in needing blood must not have been a really important emergency. I stood there for a moment and then I walked out. Maybe perhaps I need ed more patience. But to me if you're having a blood drive because there is a shortage for blood and you say and post that it's an emergency then perhaps you should act like it

I reserved a lane at the pool on 4-13-2021 at 4 pm. I called in at 2pm and they told me I had lane 1 and 2.)) I get here at 4 and there are two ladies in my lanes. I go to the counter and it turns out they messed it up they put me down for the next day. The lady starts laughing cuz I’m obviously upset cuz what the hell i called ahead of time. Straight up crooks...I signed up with this gym specifically for the hot tub and sauna so that my my son and I can cut weight and relax our muscles. We workout on post from alot of running. I am Army and he is a high school wrestler. Ever since the pandemic happened they have charged FULL price with a quarter of the amenities there. I called and tried to work it out with management and they could care less. A crook is someone who charges you FULL price and gives you a quarter of the product. Do not sign up with them. They could care less, all they care about is their profits.

It is an okay place. The price is way high, but the facility is great. The difference between here and Golds is the pool. The trainers at Golds are EXTREMELY talented and not as expensive.

AFF was behind the curve when dealing with Covid-19. They needed to allow a membership dues adjustment for March and offer better reopening options. Placing a membership hold for only two months is not enough! (There needs to be a vaccine.) Overall the gym is adequate for cardio workouts and offers a handful of classes.

I️ LOVE this gym. I’ve had to switch to water fitness and can’t say enough about the large variety of classes and the excellent instructors. Tanya really gives me a workout with Aqua Bata and Aqua Kombat. Tracey’s Aqua Zumba class is soooo much fun. The protein shakes are excellent. There is a large variety of equipment and the place is very clean. I’m always seeing someone cleaning no matter what time of day I’m there. The money is more than worth it!

I used to use this gym for lap swimming and have had to move to another location. This gym has no oversite of the pool area and the staff allow non lap swimmers to dominate the lanes supposedly dedicated to lap swimmers. Even worse the kiddie pool is not monitored and kids are screaming and yelling (in an indoor pool area) while adults are trying to exercise. The staff make no effort to enforce the rules.

I use the basketball court, the stationery bicycles, the pool, hot tub and sauna and the fitness machines. I like them all. I even appreciate the improvements made to the men's locker room and showers.My only request is that you would return lounge chairs to the pool deck and decrease the number of park bench seats. Many of us like to relax after exiting the sauna, pool and hot tub.

I was in the colonial heights area for a week of training with the DoD. I needed a place to workout that was close to my hotel and this gym was right next door to the Hampton. I walked over and spoke with the friendly staff who directed me to their head Salesmen which I believe was Steve. He was extremely nice and was able to work it out where I could train at the gym for the week. I will be traveling to the area again for further work related training in the future and this is where I will be going for my fitness needs. My first experience with childcare was horrible, provider had not changed my son in 2 hours, and was provided with the care bag with all his necessities. My second experience was with a representative name Taylor Hackley, she failed to cancel my contract after i gave her written notification within 3 days to cancel the contract (specified in contract), via email as she requested! and after speaking with her on the phone on more than one occassion. I text messaged her to inquire as to the reason she did not cancel my contract, she failed to respond to all messages or take accountability (shocking to say the least). I called to speak with her about the matter, and she forwarded me to her manager. I
kept wondering if there was a miscommunication or misunderstanding, why did she not clarify herself at any point? Afterall they took money from my account without my authorization! Ultimately i realized there was not any good intent behind her actions. I refuse to do business at this location. Military and Civilians, beware!!! of this facility and the way that they operate, have everything documented!!!, and i would reccommend not to take any "special offers or favors" from this team. Very sketchy and a lack of integrity and accountability!

I love being a member of American Family Fitness in Colonial Heights. It has a great selection of equipment, an indoor swimming pool, and plenty of challenging fun group classes.

It has some unique features which makes AmFam my favorite gym:

Child care that my one year and and two year old love going to! They even watched my one year old when she was an infant.

The locker room is brand new! I wasn’t able to take a picture because I didn’t want to be that creep taking pictures in the locker room, lol. Although I briefly considered because it is so nice. I think the gym will give you a tour if you wanted to see it.

The cleanest gym I have ever seen. It actually smells good, no joke. Every time I use the locker room, I think, I must have been the first person to come in since it has been cleaned.

The staff is so nice. especially the people in child care, they are like baby whisperers.

I love this gym so far. The one in Colonial heights is the closest to me. I've been going to this gym and its other locations for close to a month now I think. Everytime I go, not only do I get a good work out in, but I get friendly greetings all around. The one who helped me sign up, Steven, even checked in on me when I hadn't showed up in a week due to recent schedule complications. Everyone at the gym treats you like family. There is a guy named Jon at the cafe who is super awesome and makes the BEST shakes. I never thought I'd be able to find that family feeling anywhere else outside of my old gym Reds in Lafayette, Louisiana... yet I found it here at the American Family fitness center. Anyone in the Virginia area, I would highly recommend considering this to be one of your gyms to go to.

Staff was slow and unfriendly. Took 30 minutes to get registered as a guest and the vibe was very off. I don’t want to say racism was a part of it but no one else in the time it took to register had an issue. Military should beware of this place. In fact, everyone should. They are the "Family" that takes money and you never see it again. I was lured into joining because I thought the contract was 6 months. It is a year. After about 3 short months, I realized that this gym would not fit into my schedule (yes, it is 24 hours...let me elaborate). I am a single parent (yes! They have childcare...I will get there). By the time I am off of work I get to spend roughly 2.5-3 hours with my kid. I would take him to the gym for about an hour to an hour and a half, but he would cry. He did not really click with any of the caregivers. If he cried for more than 5 minutes, they would come get me. Guess what my 2 year old learned? "If I cry, I get mom." But, that is their "policy."
I have repeatedly asked out of my contract. I agreed to pay a cancelation fee. Yet, I am charged $68 every month for a gym that feels like the creepy side of the family you are forced to see once a year...They refuse to let me out of my contract because it was for A YEAR...Not 6 months. The ones that took your money and you never saw again. Stick to Golds Gym. MILES cheaper, and great childcare. Or Planet Fitness. Anywhere but here!

I am very happy with AmFam. Coming from another gym in town this was like a breath of fresh air, and I wished I had known how amazing this place was in comparison to the other gym. The facility is clean and the staff is constantly wiping equipment and the facility down. There is an adequate amount of equipment, and the class instructors are AMAZING. The Kids Zone is fantastic the kids are active and I feel like my child's safety is a priority. The kid zone's instructor to child ratio is small so all kids are monitored at all times. They offer tanning in beds that do not look like throw back beds from the 70s, nor do they smell like burnt skin. Every single staff member is friendly and welcoming, as well as the other members who patron this gym. I highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a new place to work out. It is definitely worth the money.

This is a very nice gym and the staff is fantastic, however, their pricing scheme is problematic at best and sketchy at worst. I had several issues with the pricing model, and was unable to get any of this money back.

The staff is friendly and helpful, super clean facility with many workout options and programs for any level of fitness, and my son loves the staff in the kid zone so it definitely helps me knowing he is in good hands and right there

So I walked in asked a simple question. How much for a day pass.. she says well, first day is free for non members. Subsequent days were 20 dollars. She then asked if I would be interested in a membership. I told her I still lived in Texas but liked what I saw online as far as they're facilities go. She then, with a look of disbelief on her face goes to get the member services person, returns, to stock I ask, who is this? Why are we needing him? I'm sorry. I just want to lift Jesus.
So he finally comes out and his first question to me.... how can I help you.... I said I want to work out. He says, work out... well do you want a membership cause there is a 20 dollar fee for non members.. I say yes the second time, right? He stutters, well I can make that be the first visit of I want. I say, thanks for nothing I just wanted to work out im going back to Petersburg

As an upcoming powerlifter I am sad to say that this gym is lacking. The staff may be exceptional, but that doesn't make up for the missing deadlift bar. The current equipment is okay but there are hardly any clips. The addition of a deadlift bar would be great to many lifters. Overall this is a great gym that has the potential to be amazing.

Hello I usually don't like to post anything. But this time I had too. I'm really impressed with this young lady who works at the front desk, night shift her name is lissette, wow! Her energy, her smile, ( long shift for that positive attitude) She is amazing, she makes sure everyone there is comfortable, and on top she CLEANS! I don't see her on her cell, or sitting down. ( I usually see employees either sitting down, or on their cell phones at the front desk) but lissette always seems something to do. GREAT CHOICE ! Great job lissette, thanks for your service!!

Staff and gyms members seem to put their egos to the side and greet each other with kindness and it makes the gym experience much more user friendly. The equipment is well kept and the new pool area according to my grandson is classy. I think once you enter this facility you will be hooked. The prices are reasonable but your health is priceless, sacrifice those extra fast food meals and the dues will pay for themselves.
