The recent changes to operating hours have made it difficult to continue my membership. Closing at 9 pm on Fridays and 6pm in Sundays is not practical, and peak hours from 5-8 pm are overcrowded with heavy traffic. With studies showing 48% of members citing convenient hours as a key retention factor, the cost savings likely wont outweigh the risk of losing loyal customers, so i'll be looking elsewhere.

This gym has been my sanctuary for the past six years! I thoroughly enjoyed my visits and was always greeted warmly by the friendly staff. If you’re seeking a gym that offers a diverse range of classes and well-equipped facilities, I highly recommend this place.

I was a member here for a little while but I’m heading back to Planet Fitness. Unfortunate because I really wanted to like this place. Honestly, the pricing just isn’t worth it. With how much they bring in from memberships, this place could be a lot better. The hours are tough since I get out of work late, I end up having to cram my whole workout into a short window before closing instead of getting a comfortable session in. For the price, I’d also expect the equipment to be in better shape and maintenance to be handled quicker. On top of that, there should be more staff around regularly cleaning and disinfecting the machines.
It’s not a terrible gym, but for the cost, it’s just not what you’d hope for. Hopefully, they improve the quality or adjust the pricing so I can try again in the future.

I love this gym but the weekend hours don’t make it easy to attend the gym when I need and want to. 11:00Pm-12:00Am should be when yall close. I have work and other things I have to do. Please consider staying open later. It’s very inconvenient and I’m not the only person that’s said this. :( thank you

This particular gym is new to me. It is spacious with a variety of weight and activities options. I took two stars off because 1. There are no mats in the workout area across from where the trainers offices are. This is the main area for mat workouts yet you have to walk all the way to the yoga station to retrieve a mat. Several members have complained and put a request for an additional mat station but still no changes in the last month. 2. Would be nice if someone can enforce the rules of the sauna including no lotions or body creams. It is done frequently in the women’s locker room. Other than these two disadvantages the gym has been okay.

Subpar gym that meets minumum requirements beyond what more affordable gyms in the area offer. They offer literally only ONE zumba class per week! Instructor is nice and the only thing keeping me a member. Equipment is old and run down. Front desk staff aren’t very helpful and seem to have a high turnover. Far better gyms for the price in the fxbg area.

Worst experience ever. Canceled in under 5 days. They say 3 business days and it was due to holidays. I only went 1 time and their leg press wasn’t safe and It locked in place yet still came towards me with 285lbs. Then they charge you more money on top of $60 a month for tanning. So now I’m stuck paying for 2 months though I signed up 5 days ago.

We have used AFF off/on for 20 years. This past year has been a huge disappointment. Womens bathroom has a nonstop sewage smell, difficulty finding stall with toilet paper. Equipment with do not use in maintenance for WEEKS at a time (never was that an issue before). Empty spray bottles and paper towel dispensers. One morning (4 am) there was food all over the floor, FOOD!!! Huge sign the building was not cleaned the night before. Employees that could careless when you inform them equipment is not functional.
What in the world has happened!!! This place used to be top notch, were is the pride in your work and business.

Where do I start??. I have been a member off and on since 2019. I return always hoping that things will have changed, for the better. I am always dissapointed that management doesn't do a better job of managing. Equipment constantly down needing repair, 2 to 3 weeks, locker rooms are nasty lockers broken, Sauna filthy puddles of sweat everywhere on the floor no one to mop up. What AFF needs is healthy competition of another full service Gym ,not Golds or Planet fitness. I have been Spoiled as I belonged to Lifetime fitness (closest is Gainesville)Ownership seems to just take dues and nothing else. Maintenance takes forever because it has to come from Shortpump an hour away, or at least that's the excuse. Hot tub is always at 101 degrees or less, too many kids work there and are not managed well, they have never understood what the true benefit of that equipment is supposed to be, at least 102 degrees to get the proper muscle repair. This is a great day care
for children but for those of us who would like to have a reasonable adult facility that will never happen! Nothing has gotten better in 5 years, just the same old same old.

American Family Fitness Center is truly a top-notch facility! The variety and quality of the equipment are impressive, catering to all fitness levels and ensuring you have everything you need for a great workout. The racquetball courts are always well-maintained, offering a fantastic space for an energetic game.

The front staff deserves a special mention for their excellent customer service. They’re always welcoming, helpful, and ready to assist with any questions or needs. Their positive energy sets the tone for every visit.

The swimming pool is another highlight—clean, spacious, and perfect for a post-workout swim or a relaxing day in the water. Whether you're a swimmer or just looking to cool off, it’s a great feature to have.

Overall, American Family Fitness Center is a well-rounded gym that makes every workout experience enjoyable. Highly recommend!

**Terrible Experience with Billing**

I'm extremely frustrated with this gym's billing practices. I thought I was signing up for a one-month trial, but instead, I was locked into a long-term membership without clear communication. When I tried to explain my situation, their response was unhelpful—they insisted I would continue to be charged until I explicitly called to cancel.

When I finally tried to cancel, no one at the gym could assist me, and I couldn't access my account online. To make matters worse, a representative informed me that I would be charged for the next month because I didn’t give a notice 32 days in advance. I never received any information about this policy. Overall, I feel misled and very upset with this experience.

Tried to cancel our membership because we moved out of state. Called several times were instructed to do it online, had issues, had various calls back-and-forth with people from the corporate office. We were instructed not to use a lease as proof of the move, and then when I did come back for work to the area was instructed by someone on site to use the lease as proof of the move.no consistency, no assistance in getting a refund for a month of unused services. Disappointed with the exit.

I’ve been a member for about 2 years now and overall I’ve had a pretty good experience. But one think I’ve noticed is toilets not flushing. Bathroom a disaster most of the times and it just seems the people that go are pretty gross. Also there is a certain manager I want to say who is always seems so hostile, he is a bald guy named Kevin I believe. Especially when it came to trying to get a guest pass to where it’s only 1 visit per year which is fine but when I signed up it was 7 days so the fact that they took that out when that’s not what I was originally paying for it for is crazy. Also I told him that I talked to another staff and they told me differently about the pass he was quick so change his tone and be so aggressive which seemed so unprofessional. Since giving the rules just changed at the time the staff may have just forgot which is reasonable since the rules just changed. He just seemed so a*nal about the situation even walking around the gym he just not does seem pleasant to be around. Overall the staff there is pretty professional with smiles and are nice. Also one thing the prices have seems to go up for the amount of things there sounds reasonable but also not if half the things are closed like pool access and bathroom toilets that do not working .

My family and I have been members for 2 years now and only became members for the swimming pool and all it's “water park features” for our child. Between the months of September and May we go 2-3 times a week to swim. over the two years it has become less and less of a family friendly gym and pool. Prior to water classes they shut off all the kids water zone 15 minutes prior to a class starting regardless of how many kids are playing and swimming in the kid pool. They remain off for the entirety of the class (between 45min-90min). Rude MEMBERS in the water classes tell kids 15 minutes prior to their class starting to get out of the community pool it’s their time for class soon. The family bathrooms/changing areas are never available because non-family members use the bathrooms to change before and after their classes. We have been made to wait up to 30 minutes to change out of wet swimsuits because children of opposite sex over the age of three can’t change in the opposite sex changing room with their parent or guardian. We have been yelled at by staff for doing that for lack of family bathrooms. Overall it is not a family friendly experience. I would recommend spending less money and going to the YMCA down the road that is actually family friendly and offers more kid friendly areas and activities.

Absolutely love this gym! My family and I were looking for a gym with racquetball courts and found American Family Fitness, and I am so happy we did! The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. There is a very good variety of equipment and all of the equipment I’ve worked with has been in good condition. I haven’t tried any of the classes or personal training yet, but am excited with their offerings. Then, of course, there’s the fact that they have racquetball courts! They also have basketball, pickleball, swim (lanes, wading, kids, and hot tub), dry saunas, and a CrossFit-style HIIT class called Fusion.

I’ve been going for the last two weeks and was impressed that even during busy times there’s plenty of equipment (only had to redirect from the leg press while someone else was on it for a few minutes). The atmosphere is also incredibly inviting. I’ve quit/never started at a few gyms because the atmosphere is just off (judgmental, aloof staff, unkempt equipment), but here my family and I feel welcomed and there’s no “gym awkwardness”. I definitely recommend American Family Fitness if you’re looking for a gym!

I canceled my membership back in June. They said I put it on a freeze, and promptly charged me $145 after the freeze was over. I called and told them there was a mistake me nor and member of my family have entered the facility in over 6 months. I was told there was nothing that could be done. I again went to canceled the membership and was hit again with another $145 charge. They are a money hungry company and should be ashamed of themselves

Have been coming here for a few months. Came from planet fitness. I pay 5x the planet fitness membership to go into a locker room that is never clean whereas pfit is always being cleaned and cleanliness is a top priority. Now i understand going to a gym that has hundreds of visitors a day may be difficult to keep clean but when i go into the bathroom paying 55 a month the last thing I want is toilet paper all over the floor and a bathroom that looks like it’s a motel 6 bathroom. While certain parts of the gym are definitely better than pfit I firmly believe customer retention is less about the machine more about the atmosphere and when the cleanliness is a bottom priority it’s hard to see that this location is serious about growing and retaining current customer base. I’m happy to be leaving this gym for a gym that is a little more expensive but has a much nicer and cleaner environment. All that said if you can look past the dirtiness I would recommend this gym and that is why I gave a 2/5 instead of a 1/5

Thank you to everyone who left an honest review here. Me and my husband were considering coming back to AmFamFitness, but after reading all these one star reviews (and there are way more of those than any other) we will be sticking with Planet Fitness and the YMCA. At least their facilities are nice and staff are courteous and friendly.

Also, we used to be members of AmFam before, during, and after Covid. After our contract was up and we went to a month to month membership, I canceled. I can attest to how hard they make it for a person to cancel their membership and get every last penny they can out of you. Before you sign that contract, read ALL of it, especially their cancellation policy. Don’t let their tour of the facility, bragging about the classes, and childcare facility bedazzle you into signing something you’ll regret. Most of their five star responses are pre-Covid. Read the recent one star reviews, because those are the most accurate portrayal of this place.

Not happy with my local gym.
They definitely do not keep up the place and lots of things look old and warned out.
Have been a member for for a while and everything looks exactly the same.
I do not like the management they are not friendly. To bring a guest you have to wait for a manager to come down and sign the person in not like other gyms that make bringing a gust fun and simple.
You also have to pay extra to use the tanning machine.
This gym is definitely pricey from the other gym in the area.

I’ve been a member of AFF for over 15yrs. The facility in Fredericksburg has gone downhill, there’s old/broken equipment, not enough classes to choose from for morning members, classes have been taken away. The water pressure in upstairs ladies bathroom is none existent to properly wash your hands, this has been for almost a year now, the strip on one of the stairs has not been repaired for months, recessed light bulbs in the cycle room has been removed …..the list goes on! Used to be my primary gym until I was exposed to the true cliquiness of the staff, mainly the training staff. They're not afraid to let members know they don't like them and have no issue talking behind your back with other members. Terrible customer service: For a gym with a monthly membership option only, neither me nor the other member of our family-plan was called back for the free 1-hour PT consultation in a month, despite reminding the staff of the fact twice in that duration! (the application form for the consultation claimed you would be contacted within 48 hours). Go here only if you've been working out all your life, are knowledgeable about all gym equipments already, don't have injuries that need special attendance (because that one PT who was also a physical therapist might just be an urban legend)

I have gone to this gym for almost 4 years and loved it up until the last six months or so. As other reviews mentioned, they greatly reduced their hours and now close at 8pm on Saturdays and 6pm on Sundays instead of being 24 hours. However our monthly fees have stayed the same. The facilities constantly have issues, namely a strange sewage smell in the lobby and Woman’s locker room that has lasted for literally months, cracks in the upstairs drywall and different equipment consistently being out of order. There is a stall in the men’s locker room that has yet to be repaired and they removed an electric scale from the upstairs instead of repairing or replacing it. For the monthly cost, you really aren’t getting your money worth. I would recommend checking out planet fitness or the local YMCA, I canceled my membership this month and won’t be looking back.

My family and I have been members for many years, and we have enjoyed our time until now. Our contract with AFF ended a long time ago, and we were month-to-month members (we could cancel at any time). We recently moved to another state, and we were told by the gym staff that we just needed to fill out an online cancelation request without relocation proof required since we are NO LONGER under a contract. I completed the form and received a notification saying, “your cancelation request has been received, and we are working on your cancelation.” AFTER THAT I RECEIVED NOTHING ELSE!!!
Today my account was debited for July. I called headquarters to request a refund - Melissa tells me that she's not refunding me because I did NOT submit proof of relocation ( WHEN I WAS TOLD BY FREDERICKSBURG LOCA, I DIDNT HAD TO SINCE IM am NOT LONGER UNDER A CONTRACT) I OFFERED TO SUBMIT proof of relocating TODAY - Melissa said Nope is too LATE! then she tells me that they sent an email stating that my membership will be canceled effective August 14th 1) I NEVER received an email with that information. 2, WHY would I want my membership to end August 14th when I requested JULY 1st since I NOT longer reside in VA!! The lack of customer service from headquarters is tremendous, and the contradicting information between locations is UNREAL; due to these contradictions, the MEMBER IS THE ONE SUFFERING THE CONSEQUENCES. IF I was UNDER A CONTRACT, I understand; I would have to follow a process but, IM NOT!!
The interaction I had today shows me the lack of customer service and the willingness to work with their members, especially LONG TIME MEMBERS that stayed regardless of the decline of the gym facilities and increase of the fees!!

AFF is stealing my money PERIOD!! And making the cancelation process more difficult than NORMAL. Again if I was under a contract I totally understand is a process to follow.
IF I EVER RELOCATE TO THE AREA I WON'T BE RETURNING TO AFF!!

Pretty decent sized gym. Equipment seemed in good enough shape. Nice big basketball court. $55 a month for one person is way too high though in my opinion. Also a 24-7 feature would be ideal. Closing at 6 is a big let down.

It's no longer a 24-hour business, the new hours are permanent, and weekend hours are short. I can no longer work out before or after work on weekends.

I really wanted to like this place. Unfortunately the membership cost greatly outweighs the heavy amount of rules, limited hours, and lack of support.

Family memberships are limited to three people, two adults and one child. Most families are over three, but guests under 18 are not allowed and no guests are allowed past 7:00 p.m.

At $55 for a membership, $80 for a couple or $100 for a family of three, a gym should be open for 24 hours and have better access for families.

I suppose Corporate changed the guest policy in hopes of a sale pitch. Unfortunately instead of allowing that guest to use the facility under a paying member, they turned us away. Not very smart. Very inconvenient. Many other changes also, to include taking away the 24/7 hours. Also, please save the generic corporate response you left so many others, if you can’t make your response specific, helpful, and actually accommodating please save it.

Nice gym but the front desk is extremely rude no matter the time of day. Unless you're white. Then they're nice to you.
But the trainers are incredibly rude and dismissive.

One of my favorite places! Why do I love AMFAM? Let me count the ways…

1. Awesome group X classes that keep me motivated and strong in new ways

2. A phenomenal kidzone that my kids
actually ask to go to! Both in the pool area and in the gym.

3. Flexible hours, tons of equipment.

I had been going to this gym for a long time and really enjoyed going there, however it has declined over the past couple of years. The gym equipment is showing its age with much older equipment, however a large majority of the equipment works. The staff are fairly friendly and are always busy. The cost for me was was reasonable, however in my opinion a little on the high side.

Here is where I give AMFAM a negative zero. The bathrooms, and specifically the mens room.

The upstairs, and downstairs urinals are absolutely disgusting. The reason is because there is almost no water pressure to clean the urinals out, with them being automatic. I tested this by holding down the flush button to see how long it would take rinse out the urinal which was disgusting and smells nasty, and all over the floor. It took close to a minute of holding the button down just to clean it out. This is every time in both bathrooms.

The other issue I had was the towels being provided at the front desk, to combat so customers can keep the machines clean before/after working out. Horrible idea. If a customer is using the towel, and going from piece of equipment to another, you now have cross contamination. The towels are use with just a quick spray, one would have to soak the towels, to prevent cross contamination. I use the paper towels, or the single use wipes.

Overall this gym is a nice one, except for some issues that need to be corrected. My main reason for leaving, was the distance from where I live which is not AMFAMs fault.

I have been a member of most of the local gyms and American Family Fitness far exceeds what you will experience at the other places. The friendliness of the staff, the cleanliness of the facility, the amount and quality of equipment, the classes, and the amenities set this apart from everywhere else in town. It reminds me of Equinox in Los Angeles. Am Fam creates a lifestyle for its members.
I recently I started using Ved Miletic for personal training, predominately stretching and flexibility. Even though only a few sessions, I can say he knows his stuff. Having played collegiate sports he knows more the any trainer I’ve ever had.
Thank you Am Fam staff. You have a great things going and it shows to your customer base like me.

As far as gyms in fredericksburg go, this is #1. Theres always room for improvement, but generally good marks in cleanliness, equipment, and professionalism with the staff.

I realize everyone has labor problems these days, but if youre going to abruptly change your operating hours there needs to be a compensatory rate adjustment or refund. After all, many members signed on under the understanding that you're open at certain hours; and opening your doors late, closing them early, or routinely closing due to light snow flurries or rain effectually constitutes a breach of contract imo.

I was there as a guest with a friend and witnessed a woman being accosted in the free weight area by a group of 3 guys. I’m not sure what exactly happened but she started with “I’m
Sorry” so it sounded to me initially like she wasn’t being threatening or anything and they literally raged out. The whole gym went silent and she left crying. No one did ANYTHING. I thought those guys were going to hit her or something. If a woman can’t go to the weight area without being basically assaulted and the gym sits there and does nothing, I don’t want to support that; and neither should you.

RUN!

I love this gym and have been going for a couple of years. That said, the main incentive for my membership was the 24/7 aspect, as it works well with my odd-hours schedule. This is no longer the case, as the hours have grossly dropped since Covid, and they even removed the 24/7 sign from the structure. The most frustrating part is that we members still pay our full contract prices but for less amenities than when we originally signed up. Go back to 24/7 and the review would easily be 5 stars.

I enjoy training at AMFAM and I am there to train hard. However, the cell phone texting while sitting on the benches is out of hand. Not all are texting, some are actually looking at instructions for doing the exercise correctly. The cell phone/camera's in the free weight room is going to cause harm. Women should not have to feel vulnerable while training because creeps are taking pictures. The staff doing walk throughs is not enough to stop what is happening, and most, not all, of the trainers are so rude I avoid them rather than ask them for help. Women should not have to feel guarded while trying to do something they enjoy.

It was the best gym before Covid-19. Now their hours are ridiculous. They close too early on the weekends. I’d like to workout late at night, but they close at 11pm now. I would have given 5 stars if they were still open 24/7.

I love this place. I've had memberships at different gyms that offered childcare but this one takes the cake. They have full activities, a playground, pool time all available to the kids when you check them in. My 3 year old loves this place.
The gym itself is well kept and clean. We've been members for almost 2 years now and havent had a problem yet.
I went to this gym for around 4 years. I loved it. I no longer live here but up until I left, it has been amazing. The staff are kind and attentivem. I made friends with a lot of them. Taylor and Rob were phenomenal trainers. I learned a lot from them.

Side note. Tad salty they got THREE new squat racks AND TWO new platforms after I left. Talk about bad timing. 😭

Honestly the environment is ok but the management team is careless and in some points they are insulating clients. As it happened with me several times. Guy with “man bun” who works front desk is too busy reading a fiction book to even return my gesture of have a good night. I used to work here and it is a very boring job, but I mean if you actively “work”, time will move faster. Go upstairs and look at the environment. Everyone’s training trying to give customers a good experience and welcome them back. Their efforts and hard work is belittled by your negligence and lack of energy to simply make a noise back to well wishes.

-I don’t get paid to tell you to have a goodnight.
-hope you at least finish the chapter.
-maybe I’m being a karen, either way I don’t hope you have a good night.

Money grabbing company. I signed up for a 24 hour gym. Ever since covid happened they stopped operating 24 hours a day. They broke the contract terms and yet I'm still paying the same monthly rates. I work the evening shift, by the time I'm done working the gym is closed. They will not allow me to cancel my membership, my money is going into their greedy pockets. They want me to get a doctor's note saying I'm incapable of working out or move 25 miles away and pay a $100 cancelation fee due to the move. I'm not going to lie to break contract. They lied about the terms I signed up for and will not honor my membership contract. This is a great gym to sign up for if you like being taken advantage of. Stay away if you want to be treat fair.
