I have been back and forth from Miami and here over the past decade and I have remained quiet about the slow decline and disappearance of critically important machines however the fact that mechanicsville location now only has one true leg extension machine is sad in and of itself but the truly unforgivable sin that the one machine has been broken for a month now (I have politely approached the front desk twice about it in the past couple weeks) is why I am here writing my first ever negative review. Ffs fix your one leg extension machine so people can have complete leg routines.

Very pleased with the service we received today at the Mechanicsville location today. We had our daughter’s 5th Frozen birthday pool party today and the kids loved every moment of it. Mrs. Brown was so pleasant to work with, I was so excited to meet her face to face. This was such a great idea and I would 100% recommend this again. Thank again AFF and Mrs. Brown!

Staff is very good, but the gym itself is the worse designed AFF facility compared to the other locations. If I'm not mistaken, Mechanicsville was the 2nd location they built when AFF arrived in Richmond in the late 80s/early 90s. The first gym on Brook Road has since been torn down and their current location at Virginia Center Commons was a huge upgrade. They really need to build a new, upgraded facility for members living in Eastern Henrico that is on the same level as their other locations. Why is it that the West End location (built many years after Mechanicsville) had a gym built, torn down, and a new gym built while we're still have this small, outdated gym that was built before their first gym? If you look on their locations on the map it is almost as if they're purposely avoiding attracting residents from Eastern Henrico/Church Hill.

Good selection of equipment and options with everything in good repair. Nice people. The former cafe area has been repurposed for exercise equipment with some tables around the outside of the original area for a refreshing after workout treat or chat. The only real downer would be the shower facility that while they are well taken care of are not as up to date or nice as some of their other locations.

I was a member of American Family Fitness for 20 years. COVID hit and as most people, I didn't want to get exposed to the virus so I froze my account. The American Family Fitness organization would only allow the freeze for a few months so I had to end my membership. I went to renew my membership thinking that I would get the same price, maybe a little more and to my surprise the price was tripled!!!!!! My wife wrote a review as well and was supposed to get a follow up call from the Mechanicsville Manager Daniela. She called once and asked for a couple of days to research the situation and see what she could do. That was months ago! This is how you treat you members?!?!?!? Seems like they are all about the money. No loyalty to a 20+ year member. SAD.......... Guess I will go with Golds Gym.

I got a call from the manager basically saying,"The new rates can't be changed." no help at all.

So disappointing! My husband was a member of this gym for over 15 years! Always paid on time and never canceled! Then COVID happened! We have some health issues that would not allow us to risk getting COVID and of course NO ONE knew that this pandemic would last so long! So fast forward 2 years and it’s safe to go back to the gym as we are all vaxed, boosted and etc. And to our surprise…THAT MEANT NOTHING to the management here! They are NOT even willing to consider letting us come back with our old rate AND now the rate is doubled so why would we pay more than $100+ for a family of 4 which is a 50 yr old, 40 yr old, 13yr old and 4 yr old!!! Our schedules and ages don’t even permit going daily but that doesn’t matter either! When I tell you my husband is heartbroken! He was a regular and knew folks there by name and they knew him after 15+ years...Loyalty means nothing to these people! COVID means nothing to these people! All they care about it there expensive membership fees! We will take our business and family elsewhere!

This is an absolutely state of the art exercise facility. The architecture is beautiful, it's wonderful to have an indoor pool which I can swim in all seasons. The sauna is big, which I use to warm up my muscles and joints before I work out. The facility associates are proactive with regards to appropriate coronavirus protocols, because you always see someone cleaning. It's good that this gym is not crowded in January, whereas other facilities are packed like sardines. There is also just an extremely beautiful girl at the service desk named Autumn who is extremely beautiful.

Closed half the machines for covid still charging full price. My debit card got cancelled and in a few days they sent my bill to collections and added a 400 dollar fee. After sending my bill to collections they continued charginging me. In total I owe 660$ to amfam because I lost my debit card. Now I have to go to VA to cancel my membership because they are still charging me. Awful evil people

It's A very nice, very well run gym. It offers a little something for everyone and for me there has never been any feelings of judgment. The place is kept incredibly clean and the staff is always courteous and knowledgeable. I spend most of my time in the pool and never have had any wait time on getting a swimming lane.
They offer a ton of different classes on all different days and times of the week to help accommodate any schedule. I highly recommend this gym.

Used to be great coming here, not so much now. Yes it's clean, and I'm fine with social distancing, but some of its members are very rude toward other members like myself even during class. Went to report it and possibly cancel my membership at the front desk but associate didn't acknowledge me in the slightest nor did any other associate nearby.
I'm already disturbed that I'm paying full price for facilities I can't use(sauna, hottub, etc) and trying to get gym time in around my schedule. I'm a grown 36 year old woman and to be spoken to and judged by other grown adult members like I'm 10 years old is completely unnecessary and unnerving.

Used to have a 5 star review but since there hours are so limited right now I can’t justify giving them a 5 star rating. Why should we pay full price when hours and services are limited? Even Golds and other gyms are open later than am fam. I understand 24 hours probably isn’t possible right now but at least stay open till 12am on weekdays and 7-8 on weekends.

I like how accommodating and friendly the staff is. The facility is also clean and there are many different activities for different focus areas. The only thing I wish there were more of are aquatic classes throughout the day. I haven't been in a while due to an injury and am ready to get back into it...but the times for the aquatic classes are pretty spread out and not consistent. I understand it's more than likely à scheduling issue and is not a reflection on the facility.

My husband attempted to cancel his membership and was told by management that it would not be possible due to the membership being an annual contract. He was told he would have to continue to pay until the end of his contract, which was several months away, even though he had not been to the gym for a few months already. He was never informed it was an annual contract when he signed up. I just happened to look online and saw there is actually an online cancellation form that allows someone to cancel with 30 days notice, which I looked for because this month was the first month of the new contract year and they charged him double his normal rate instead of charging nothing (since he asked to cancel months ago...). This is very frustrating, as we have a family account which is expensive but I am now 7 months pregnant so I haven't been in the last 4 months either. It literally was a waste of $100 every month that could have gone to saving for our daughter.

I am still in my first week of my membership but so far I think this was one of the best decisions I could have ever made. The staff is very friendly and go out of their way to help. My home location is Midlothian however, I do frequent several of the other locations. I took the Cycle 6:30pm Ride Class this evening w/Heather M. I was very impressed w/her calm yet motivating tone. Her dialogue & coaching was encouraging & achievable while still pushing yourself to a challenge. Great instructor 👍🏼

Everything about this place is top-notch. There are so many available classes including Zoomba, Fight, Yoga, Cycling and so much more. The equipment is amazing with circuits and free weights. I see seniors in great shape working out on a regular basis. The pool is perfect and the hot tub, so relaxing. The sauna is hot and wonderful. The staff is so cheerful. They always remember my name and greet me when I walk in the door!!! I LOVE American Family Mechanicsville!

American Family Fitness in Mechanicsville is a great place to go. They have so many different classes you can take and the trainers and instructors and the whole entire staff are so friendly and very helpful. I have been going for almost 4 years and this is the best gym I have ever been to in my life. I consider this one of my happy places. I have been working with a personal trainer for over 3 years now Amy Elizabeth Wilson and she is fantastic. A few of the other trainers there I have fallen in love with too Danielle Roberts, Crystal Smith, Lill Harris and Cheryl Hinks to name a few. So if you are looking for a very friendly place to go this is the place.

We recently moved to this area and orginally joined Amfamfit in Fredericksburg. Looking at the equipment the two locations are night and day. The floorplan doesn't flow for some reason. For those with limited mobility there are some cardio machines along the walls downstairs. If you have a chronic condition the last thing you want to feel like is "nobody puts baby in a corner." If you want to feel civilized you must hike the stairs because an elevator is not an option. I completely understand this is a health club but some people are experiencing a healthier life because they move more. Diversity in our world today involves inclusion of differences on a larger scale.

I like that it is open 24 hours, which is convienent for me and the job that I have where I usually work doubles for most of the day and night. I also like that a gym membership does not limit you to one certain gym, you could go to any gym, which was the best thing to do as I joined with a friend who lives in Chester, while I live in Ashland, there are gyms in both of our towns and mechanicsville is in between both of us for when we want to meet up and work out. The general athestic is very nice and I really enjoy the lounge area where you can rest and get a protein shake or drink and take a break. The locker room and girls bathroom has always been very clean every time I’ve been there and it was very large and spacious which I liked a lot. There is always one girl at the front desk who checks me in since I’ve started and she’s always been so honest and helpful with everything equipment wise and in general, which was what brought me to get a gym membership the same day I came in to tour the gym.
