Beware of Janet! I had two interactions with this person and both were negative. After the second I immediately asked to cancel my membership. One of the other staff members asked me to wait and to speak with the GM Sasha. Later in the evening I asked to speak to her but she was gone for the day so I asked for another manager, who happened to be Janet! She was eager to have another staff member cancel it for me without even making an attempt to apologize or ask me to reconsider.

Before leaving the gym, I asked for Sasha to reach out to me the next day, but when 3:30 pm rolled around I had not heard from her so I called her. She didn't even make an attempt to ask what had happened or why I was so angry that I asked to cancel my membership so quickly. She also knew exactly who I was because she never even asked for my name which means she had gotten the message about reaching out and chose to ignore it.

I don't want to bash all the staff as most are very nice and welcoming, but I would have expected more from the club leadership.

I would also note that if your considering joining the men's locker room Sauna has not worked for years now and the club leadership doesn't seem to have any plan or intention on fixing it.

Great place to workout. Recently music cuts in and out always skipping between songs. Kind of annoying. Been like this for a month plus now. Just shut off the music already. It plays for a min and then stops. Then picks up on a different tune a min later.

My only compliant is whoever organizes the dumbells. We cant start at 5 and go to 120? If you are doing a working set wouldn't you probably go up 5 pounds each time? Someone decided 80s then 105s. It just doesn't make any since. Like who is grabbing 55s then 110s?

I just moved from Mechanicsville to North Chesterfield a month ago and I've started going to this gym full time and it's sub par compared to other locations.
Based on the size of this location and the number of members you would think there would be much better equipment. But you'd be mistaken.
The arms of the 2 squat racks in the corner all have broken coverings,
The cable machine is half the size of the gym in Mechanicville and the type of handles available are lacking,
And just in general. The machines/free weights are older and more beat up than other locations.

Here's an actual interaction with 1 employee after I asked if the fans could be turned up:
Me: Hi, could the fans be turned up. They were high the other day but someone has turned them down.
Them: The power went out yesterday so maybe they need to build back up.
Me in my head: That's not how electricity works.
Me: Ok....

This gives you an idea of the quality, and caring of some of the employees..... Build... Back.... Up....

And if you don't want to be on some wanna be influencers videos, don't go here. People love setting up tripods and recording with no regard for anyone else's privacy. And management doesn't care or is too lazy to confront people about it.

But if you like doing your weights on machines or having a big choice of cardio machines, this is your place!
But then again if you like machines you should just save a ton of money and join a Planet Fitness.

Super disappointed in this place. Tried to add my husband to my membership on three separate occasions, the first two times the membership employees were too busy to help us. We even waited around but ultimately had other engagements we had to get to. The third time we tried later in the day but they had already left. We drove all the way there and not only was there no one to help sign him up but we weren’t allowed to workout because he was no longer allowed as a guest and needed a membership.

Also, the third time I took my child to their kid zone the fire alarm went off for an VERY long time and absolutely terrified her. She doesn’t want to go back and the kid zone was the main reason we chose this gym.

Upon trying to evacuate when the fire alarm went off staff told myself and other gym goers it was just a drill. But when trying to grab my bag from the locker room an employee was blocking the entrance and said it was temporarily closed. I told her I needed my bag to leave and she walked me back but the power was out. When I was leaving the gym I saw a fire truck pulling in. Considering my child was in their kid zone at the time the whole situation left me uneasy.

My husband, two kids, and I have been coming to AmFam for a year now and absolutely love it! Our biggest draw was the kids zone, all of the staff is beyond amazing with our children, one who we’ve been bringing since she was 4 months old. We can not recommend enough!

My family & I have been a loyal member of American Family Fitness for over 10 years, and I am beyond disappointed with my recent experience. The level of rudeness and unprofessionalism I encountered from Sasha and Ginger at the midlothian location was unacceptable. From the moment I approached them to add my 2-year-old son to our family account— they were rude, unhelpful, and spoke to me with such attitude that I was left completely shocked.

As someone who has supported this gym for over a decade, I expected much better treatment and not to be talked to like I’m less than. Instead of providing any sort of solution or assistance, they made the process unnecessarily difficult and left me feeling disrespected.

Because of this experience, I will not be returning to the Midlothian location. I have had much better experiences at the other 2 locations in the Richmond area. It’s truly disappointing to see customer service at this level in a place I once trusted and enjoyed.

AmFam is the best gym chain in the RVA metro IMO at least if comparing to the Y, Crunch, Gold's. I have been a member here for many years and continue to appreciate how good of a gym it is compared to other chains. It's clean, it's big, it has plenty of equipment and classes for most fitness needs, which means it doesn't dilute your membership costs into things you don't normally utilize. The issues I'm having with this specific location as of late is the extensive downtime of the sauna (months) and rumors that it will never be replaced due to exorbitant costs of 20000+ dollars. The sauna is one of the fundamental aspects of some members' routines, including my own. The steam room is actually fine as a replacement but conditions in the steam room are so variable, partially due to, once again, members abusing the equipment in the steamroom, but also due to more frequent maintenance times and perhaps staff's lack of expertise or firmness in choosing a proper temp setting. This leads to an inconsistent and often dissatisfied experience. The steam room is excellent if it was kept at 120F. People simply need to understand (and be informed through signage) that the durations you are expected to sit in a steamroom are not as long as a sauna.

Many of us feel extremely upset that the individual who burned the sauna hasn't been caught or admitted their guilt. We are all dealing with their mistake. Failure to come up with a solution that properly addresses misbehavior of an individual instead of a solution that collectively weighs everyone down is unfortunate.

In addition, smaller things I wish would improve here. Fountains would be so much nicer if they had bottle refilling stations on more than just 1 fountain that's located in a remote 2nd floor location. Replace the pad on the 45 degree sled plate-loaded leg press. It gets extremely uncomfortable due to lack of padding and probably increases risk of back injury because people's spines are being allowed to go into lumbar flexion unless they're finding better ways to brace themselves.

Made it impossible to cancel and they will not refund you for any of the months they billed you for regardless of the fact have not been using there facilities and there are plenty of phone call records of you discussing the cancellation being completed. Stay away from this gym!! The vibe is horrible because of the rude staff. A personal trainer named Sonia was so nasty to me that I had to cancel my gym membership on the spot. Its also been years and every time i ask i get told soon, when will we finally have our 24/7 hours again? If you don’t want to adhere to something your customers bought atleast increase the hours in which you stay open. Either way just be honest with your employees and customers so we can plan accordingly. If you are happy with staying the same thats fine. just let us know so we can look for another 24/7 gym. I Have been a member for almost 2 years now and still one of the best gyms in Richmond. Unfortunately the Midlothian location has taken a bad turn. It's inundated with young kids from both middle school and high-school. All for these kids ability to workout but they don't do it in a safe manner and clearly creates an environment others don't want to work out around. They have a rule that children under 13 are not allowed in the weight area but clearly it's not enforced. They are just putting themselves kn such a risk for a lawsuit if someone to get hurt and its only a matter of time. I have mentioned this to management but it does not seem to be an issue. Unfortunately after almost 20 years I might have move gyms.

funny I was reading reviews today and just so happened to find someone with the same opinion. Around 330 pm to around 6 I've noticed the gym is full of middle schoolers/High schoolers. I'm glad I can move my workout to a later time. Watching these young kids flex around in the locker room shirtless is so cringe. I've also voiced this to management. They said they they are of age, Either way, there's a ton of teenagers at this gym every day.

I paid for $750.00+ worth of personal training sessions and unfortunately had to freeze my account. I was told by management my sessions would be frozen as well.....now, new management says "thats not how it works???" So, I ran it up the flag pole to the owner...... and he confirmed that not how it works ....all of your sessions have expired. I go exclusively for the friendly staff and the wet areas along with the equipment and atmosphere. I give 4 stars only because other locations are reportedly nicer, and the air has a distinct scent/smell. Ginger is very accommodating however I was charged for open pass week Jan 8th through 14th. I'm okay with that because I received a free 7-day pass to help me out at the beginning of my winter break before the holidays (which I was traveling and got sick). They have been very flexible and my friend works there as well and seems to enjoy his job. I'm used to the college gym life but I very much miss the amenities when I am not at home.

Working out at this location is great. The staff is always pleasant...WITH THE EXCEPTION OF Ginger Andrews. Apparently once a contract is signed, Ginger discards professionalism, courtesy, and basic concepts of appropriate customer service.

The Readers' Digest version: I made an inquiry regarding membership policy. Under Ginger's rule (Not sure if it is an AmFam rule), if she has to explain a company policy more than twice to a customer, it is okay to speak condescendingly, to yell, and to scream at paying customers...my mistake. As Ginger reminded me, I am under contract, so....

To Ginger: As a representative of Amfam, you should be better able to communicate and convey the practices and policies more effectively. If you find that you are incapable of such a task, you should excuse yourself and find someone who can.

AmFam offers like new equipment in a nice environment that can support multiple fitness goals. However, this gym is good if you ONLY want to go to the gym. Outside of that, the programs it offers are a clear cash grab that is put in place by management and has been horribly handled. I have been ignored by staff to to cancel my membership so that I can move on to another gym to pursue my fitness goals. I paid and extra $95 a month on top of my $95 membership for a program that then raised its prices just before offering 50% less classes (non covid related changes). This class is the entire reason I stayed with this gym. Customer service should be #1 with this gym since it is among the more expensive fitness clubs in the Richmond area. I heard other stories about the customer service here and chose to ignore it and give them a chance. Don’t make that mistake. Very disappointing experience ..

One if the managers from American Family Fitness came to my work, we talked about their fitness programs and fees. The next day I signed up a friend of mine and myself with American Family Fitness. I do enjoy the gym. They have a lot of equipment for cardio and lifting. But there's are some things that irritate me. Bringing a guest is always an experience. They have to pass through so many obstacles depending who's at the front desk. I usually bring the same guest (once a month) and she literally goes through the absolute MOST just for an hour and a half workout. The music is equally just as terrible. So if you forget your head phones ... don't expect the music in the gym to put you in the right frame of mind.

American Family Fitness is a great gym. The associates are always polite. The instructors are knowledgeable and go out of their way to make people feel comfortable in their classes.
I live in Chester however the Chalkley gym is my least favorite of all of them.
This one is my favorite by far and I drive out of my way to go to it as I love the pool area. It has both a wet and dry sauna in the women's locker room.

Its decent club I like it, one big complaint I have is that , this club has one of the worst bench press racks I ever seen. It's high, hooks on it so badly shaped for safety It feels very unstable to unrack barbells. I ended up developing wrist pain on these. Please replace these with the kind of bench press setup you have on other midlothian club. I'm sure anyone who seriously lifts dislikes these.

I love going to this gym. Friendly staff and always clean. The only reason I did not give five stars is because at times it can be a bit crowded in the free weight section.

The whole staff is very friendly. I've had a great experience and fantastic results with my personal trainer, Cammie Quinones. The facilities are extensive and very user-friendly.

Great place, has a very nice pool and a fantastic sauna and steam room, which are the two main reasons why I chose AFF over other local gyms with swimming pools. A bit pricey compared to other gyms, but the locations are very convenient for me and again, sauna and steam room plus a hot tub set it above other places.

We love American family! They have the best guest policy- I love bringing my friends. I also love the childcare and taking my kids to the indoor pool or splash pad. And they have the best in-gym barre classes. I’m so very happy here! Highly recommend
