I am not a gym ~connoisseur~ by any means, they’ve got machines that work and a nice track that I love, but I do love a pool. And to be fair, they have a kid pool, two main pools, a lap pool, and a hot tub. But I just want to know WHY IS THE POOL ALWAYS SO COLD? And I swear it gets colder as the weather gets colder. I just want a nice chill swim after working out but I’m always freeeeezing in there I have to clutch my limbs close to my body to keep from shivering! Also my boyfriend has now been harassed by three different people trying to get him to join an mlm. To the point where today someone tried to talk to him and he said alright I’m gonna stop you here, are you gonna try to get me to join an mlm? And the guy said yes and left him alone. Ugh. Other than all that, it’s fine and hopefully can help me get in shape! 😂

American Family Fitness went down hill and keeps going down. This use to be the gym I was proud to recommend, not anymore.
Few things to note.
1. Water fountains do not work (for months now).
2. Equipment out of order signs stay on for months at the time and when asked GM for updates, always clueless of date or that its even broken.
3. March 27 they took out approximately 10 machines out. May 26 they put down blue tape for new machines coming in. July 27 GM still does NOT know when the gym is getting new equipment. How is this possible? Why take equipment out if you dont have delivery date for the replacement.
4. Men's bathroom urinals out for months at a time. Plastic bag that was on it, members decided to pee on it. Gross!
5. Many of us are members with 24h contract, however this facility changed their hours without notice or adjustment of our fees, and refuse to adjust morning hours during week.
6. Mold all around gym (GMs notified multiple times still the issue).
7. Corners of the gym full of hairs and dust
8. Men's lockers are mostly broken, good luck trying to lock a thing or two.
9. Class stereo system is always broken, feel bad for those instructions never know what they will get when teaching classes.
10. Opening on time, staff either forgets they are working or just dont care to arrive 5 minute before door needs to open. If regular person is out there is a 100% chance gym won't open on time that week at least once.
11. Hole in the wall, going on weeks now
12. At skatenation banner hanging that its a 24h facility, false advertisement.

So much more to list, would love to see someone who cares take over and fixes this place up to be what it has potential to be. Its a great location and building if someone would just make it that!

Edit: Sept 13, 2025. New equipment available on 09/11 (5.5 months later), on 09/13 new Leg press machine is out of order already, 2 days, how?

My $50 annual fee hit my account today, and as I sit here and look at the pending charge I cannot help but reflect on the state of this gym.

The water fountains are refrigerated, yet the water comes out warm. How hard is it to fix a refrigerated drinking fountain?

As other members have pointed out, there is blue tape on the floor in the place of equipment that has been removed in Q1 of this year, and the new equipment has not been delivered. Why would the old equipment not remain until the new equipment is ready?

The men's locker room and men's bathroom upstairs are frequently disgusting. How hard is it to keep a bathroom clean?

There is literally a hole in the wall. How hard is it to fix a drywall hole?

Equipment is out of service for long periods of time, and other equipment issues persist until a member says something (wobbly bench, loose dumbbell, etc.). Is there no proactive maintenance being done? Are there not routine inspections of the equipment?

The hours at this gym are terrible for the price point. After expressing my frustrations on another platform, "inclusion" was cited as the reason for a 2:00 PM close time on labor day. What about inclusion for members? If you want people to work on holidays, you pay them more money. This shouldn't be an issue for a gym with the revenue of American Family Fitness. I can understand Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day, but closing at 2:00 for every minor holiday is ridiculous. ACAC was open until 6:00, and I feel that American Family should have been as well.

These problems, as well as others that I have not discussed here have easy solutions, and they are clearly the failure of management. Management needs to learn how to get things done. We need to see some real changes around here, otherwise I am going to switch to a different gym that cares about the quality of the product.

I don't understand what I am paying for. I got so used to Lifetime Fitness in NC and GA and all the things they have to offer I have been very disappointed by what I have access to coming back to VA. Amfam as a whole is no longer 24/7 but it's gotten less worth the membership. The cafe is gone, the classes are only available when there is staff for them. The kid zone has been scaled back. This location however takes the cake. The pool HVAC is busted but the pool is still open. No notice, just everything absolutely covered in condensation and fumes so strong your lungs burn. Went to shower, there is rust everywhere. The concern I have is my cousin who was with me had nowhere to bathe safely because the handicapped stall was wildly unsafe between the rusty shower handles and bench in there falling apart. It took her a long time to bathe and dress because of this and was exhausted afterwards.

This gym has really fallen off a cliff. The pool HVAC is broken but the pool is still open. Tried to deal with the fog, the air quality and the dripping condensation everywhere (I had driven across town to get there). Couldn't do it and had to leave. Went to shower, there is rust on the shower dials, shower heads, the visable pipes. The handicapped shower is unuseable, I have a membership thru my insurance and my condition sometimes causes mobility issues. On bad days I cannot stand up to bathe for long and forget getting dried and dressed without sitting down. The stall that should be accessible for me to sit and bath was thoroughly rusted and the bench was cracked, unstable and generally an advertisement for having an up to date tetanus shot.

Got home and looked up how safe it is to have the pool ventilation broken but the pool still open.

Worst customer service and also it took 40 days to get a coach. Also overall coaching session was average - I could find more information by doing google search to get a fitness info. Their membership team like to argue with customer rather than think about solution - and they like to talk. Who wants to spend so much time to talk to gym person. I regret joining and miss YMCA.

As someone who has been going to this gym for 15 years now, it has been tough to watch the steep downfall of this establishment.

Before Covid, the gym was incredible. It was 24 hours and the equipment was always working and clean. Now ever since Covid the gym is not what it once was.

The hours are awful, They charge more for our membership Aren’t 24 hours anymore it’s ridiculous. On holidays they will close at 2 PM which is absurd because most people have work off and enjoy going to the gym On a weekday, not in the morning before work.

The equipment Is always going out of order and takes forever to get fixed. Some machines will stay broken for months before being repaired.

The cleanliness of the gym Taken a step back. The locker rooms are usually Very dirty and the toilets never seem to be Cleaned anymore. Also, the equipment looks like it is Wipe down by anyone, including staff during closed Hours.

This gym needs to go back to exactly what they were doing before Covid came around. 24 hours, clean updated Equipment, And nicer Cleaner locker rooms. That would justify paying how much we do for a membership.

I've been a member of American Family Fitness mainly for the steam room, but it's been out of order for over a month with no clear update on when it will be fixed. Paying full membership fees while a key facility remains unavailable feels unfair. If you're considering joining for the steam room, I’d recommend checking if it’s actually working first. I’ve been a member of American Family Fitness for a while now, and I have to give a huge shoutout to Maddy and Valerie at the front desk. They are incredibly nice and always greet me with a warm smile, making it a great start to my gym session. Their friendly energy really sets the tone for my workouts!

The gym itself is enormous, with tons of equipment available, although I’ve noticed some members can be a bit stingy with the machines. I also wish they’d allow us to use the fusion room when there aren’t classes—it would be perfect for extra workouts or stretching.

Overall, I absolutely love this gym. It’s definitely a 5-star experience!!

I’m a senior citizen who has asked AmFam to terminate my membership numerous times due to health issues. I have had 3 surgeries in 2021 and before that my arthritis prevented me from using the membership fee that they take out of my checking account. I have not been there since 2018 and they have ignored my request to terminate my membership at Short Pump, Va. I’m going to file a complaint with the Attorney General and BBB to stop AmFam from stealing money from seniors who cannot attend the gym and who can’t afford to have money being stolen from them by this huge corporation. I even opened a new account because of fraud and they were able to take money from my account. Something must be done about this. They have been stealing from me too long and ignoring my request to terminate my membership at AmFam in Short Pump, Va.

I used to have GymPass to go to this location and decided to get a membership for myself and my entire household. I used to love this gym, the convenience of location, the staff and hours. With the recent changes in how we are able to bring guests, it has driven me away from the gym. Firstly, there was no mass notification nor addendum to the signed agreement acknowledging the change in process for having a guest. Instead of being allowed one guest every 30 days, it has recently changed to one guest every 12 months. I enjoy having a gym buddy, someone I can workout with. With the new changes, I’m only able to workout with the same friend once per year. I pay close to $200 for the membership every month, that has gone through the worst changes since becoming a member. When I was first told of the changes, I asked multiple questions to confirm that each member on the plan could bring a guest of their choosing. I even gave an example of myself being a friend on Monday and the same friend coming as my brother’s guest on Tuesday and was advised it fit within the new regulations. Come today, the rules have changed again. What is the point of having a yearly guest? That’s like only speaking to your friend or family member once a year. This new policy doesn’t promote community nor the practice of healthy relationships. I now see why my brothers prefer other locations to this one. To be willing to travel 20+ minutes away from home just for better service and communication speaks volumes. I confirmed, there is no information available online or in the member portal that corroborates this new narrative. Now I am reluctant to go and am seriously contemplating continuing and/or renewing my membership.

Similar to others’ reviews, gym not friendly to visitors from out of town. My family has a membership paying for 6+ people. I visit from Maryland from time to time and like to go to the gym with my siblings. For the monthly price of a 6+ person membership you’d think I could also be admitted but it’s an additional charge of $20 per day. I understand that it’s a business that needs to make money and the charge will discourage people from always tagging along as visitors and it get their own membership. But $20 a day is excessive if I’m visiting for a week or two at a time on top of the rate of the monthly membership my parents already pay for. And also you know I’m not trying to get over on not having my own membership because I’m presenting a Maryland state ID at the desk…

Aside from the visitor policy, the gym is crammed. For the location they really need to double the size of the facility and equipment. And probably should have employees walking the floors for equipment hogging because they are so small they really can’t have members lounging on the weight machines laughing at TikToks instead of moving out the way

DO NOT go to this gym if you are from out of town.

So I came to this gym because I’m away from my regular gym. Got a free 3 day pass like I’ve gotten at many other gyms across the country with no problem. Got to the gym at 5:30am like I usually do and it looked like a lot of other people do as well. The woman at the desk thought I was there to scan a membership card so clearly they aren’t familiar with who are members or not. First I’m told I can’t do it because the membership associates aren’t in until 9am. And second, I’m told I wouldn’t be able to use it because I won’t be getting a membership here. That’s very inconvenient and not a very accommodating to someone like me.

I’ve run a gym as a manager before and I have never denied someone the ability to want to improve their health by wanting to work out, especially if they’re from out of town. I wasn’t even offered a day pass or anything. Very disappointed in this gym. Just another big gym that doesn’t care about customer service.

Was told that I could view the gym from the front desk but I would not be able to see the facility because member services was gone for the day and they would have to escort me through the building. Overall this a clean gym with good equipment and friendly staff but unfortunately there are some issues. When equipment breaks it stays broken for a long time. The HVAC in the pool area was out for months. One of the two light bulbs in the men’s steam room was out for multiple weeks. Currently, the one pec fly machine they have has been broken for over 3 weeks. It could be fixed with a $1 spring from Lowe’s. Soap in the showers is hit and miss so check before you get in. AFF is less expensive than the other big gym down the road so overall it’s a good value but just remember you get what you pay for.

Equipment is out of order very often at this facility was alarming is the showers have not been consistently providing hot water in over three weeks I reported it twice got no response. Staff at front desk doesn’t seem interested in Customer Service when reporting equipment that is not working properly . This is the best American Family in the area I just wish it worked more often. Updated to 2 stars for the policy to call and check on reviews. Taylor who called handled it extraordinary. Couldn't have asked for a better person to follow up. Though, I'm not sure why a supervisor/leadership is not following up on these types of issues. I still feel like there are some systemic issues that aren't being handled very well there. Hopefully, they improve service for others and allow an easier process to join. I don't think I'll be joining but hope others have a better experience.

I arrived Jan. 7th morning and was thinking about signing up either on my own or with my mother who has an existing membership. She was to arrive later so I went ahead and signed up for the free pass online which instructed me to come on in to try out its facilities. Great. When I arrived and told them about the free pass, I was told to wait. I waited while they helped another guest, no problem. I felt I was met with annoyance when they could finally help me. I was told I was supposed to call ahead. There is no mention of having to call ahead online. Having to call ahead was mentioned a few more times while they were assisting me. I even apologized as I didn't realize it would be so difficult to try to use the gym before obtaining a membership. I was told it wasn't difficult just that I should have called ahead. While displaying an air of inconvenience and annoyance. I mentioned how I was possibly going to join my mother's membership as she lived with me but was going to inquire later. Key phrase was I was going to inquire later. I was then asked for her name for some reason. Then looked her up and asked if I lived with her. I said Yes she lives with me. I was told our driver license addresses don't match so one of us would need it changed. Then was vague on if they take other forms of proof of ID which are easily accessible. DMV address change is definitely not worth it at this point.

So just wanting to try the place out, I felt dismissed at just wanting to try the place out in the first place and played 20 questions on why I can't join.

Hey, AFF. 35 is really staring to look like 65+. It’s hard to tell a friend that, but It’s time to put yourself on an excercise regiment. A New Year’s resolution, maybe. To be your flagship store I am surprised at how much you have neglected yourself. The amount of deferred maintenance here and lack of cleanliness is shocking. Many pieces of equipment are in disrepair and the building is really in bad shape. And whatever you do, you should check the turf before you lay on it. Gross!

Staff is always nice. Trainer Mike is awesome. Gym equipment on floor is great. Lots of variety and great hip thrust machine.
But, the class equipment is terrible. I take classes all the time. You have to go thru almost all the steps just to make sure it isn't broken. The dumbell weights covers are peeling off and are gross.
The bathrooms are always dirty especially the upstairs bathroom. They almost always have no toilet paper and being a woman it's not fun having to woddle over or ask to spare a sqaure.

Super wholesome people, staff is super nice. Lost and gained a ton of weight going here and couldn’t have done it without amfam. My friend who’s been going over 10 years though had his membership frozen and they wouldn’t let him buy a pass to get in, or let me use my guest pass, even though he’s been going for years. Other than that experience, super awesome gym, would highly recommend. Also kid zone staff is awesome helped in my younger years and still supporting me in my order years.

It’s incredibly disappointing that AMFAM used Covid as an excuse to permanently drastically shorten their operating hours. Being open for 24hrs(even though that wasn’t 100% true) used to be the main selling point for decades and it was amazing. It was the main reason how they got so many people to join in the first place. You can make an argument for not being open over night to save operational costs but the hours for Friday-Sunday are absolutely atrocious. It makes the gym completely inaccessible for those who have families and can only go later on at nighttime after a long work week. Is it really that hard to just be open until 11PM everyday? It would be a nice compromise to all the members who joined for the 24/7 access. Please fix this!

I visited American Family Fitness ,Short pump with my children today, hoping to enjoy a fun-filled day at the gym's Kid Zone. However, my experience was marred by an unexpected and uncomfortable policy that was not clearly communicated anywhere on the website or during our visit.

Upon arrival, my children excitedly rushed towards the Kid Zone, only to be stopped by a staff member who informed us that children (2 & 4 year old)has to wear underwear under pants in the play area.

It was disappointing to discover this policy only after arriving at the gym and couldn’t enjoy the workout time .If this rule is in place to ensure cleanliness and hygiene, it should be clearly stated on the gym's website and communicated to customers when they sign up or at the time of entry.

American family fitness hours are not good. Crunch and golds gym have much better hours and much more cost effective. You can’t bring guests here and they do not give blue towels anymore. Plus it is always packed to the rim no matter what time you go and treadmills don’t work properly. Closing at 6 pm Sundays and 9pm fridays is an absolute joke. Crunch is open till 8 pm Sunday and 11 pm Friday. Too expensive

Really nice facilities and nice people that work there but their contract terms are terrible. After years of going to the gym we added our newborn to our family membership and now we are charged ~$50 more per month (rather than the $15 it should be and is advertised to be) for someone that can't even use the equipment. When we brought up our concerns that it's no loyalty towards existing members the reply was that's what the policy/contract is. In our contract our 2 month old is entitled to a free personal training session, I'm not sure how they plan on training our infant but I fully expect it because that's what the policy/contract is.

I have been a member of AmFam for 10 years. I absolutely love this gym. I recently started the Fusion classes and they are excellent. They are smaller group classes with a variety of full body workouts. They are great for any fitness level. I highly recommend Fusion!!! Also the staff are very friendly and the gym is clean!

Gym is big and nice but not organized and no strong team and boxing bags been disabled for months and now the best abs machines are gone and only kept basic ones!

Came to this gym specifically for the steam room as I have another amfam near me. The sign says cleaning for the steam room starts at 1. I went in at 2 and it’s not working. A nice lady who doesn’t work there tells me they clean jt at 2 and it’s frustrating bc the sign on the wall says 12 to 1. How am I supposed to fully enjoy what I pay for if management won’t follow their own rules written on their wall???

I was getting cold waiting in the steam room. Called the front desk to confirm and the guy didn’t even know if the steam room was working or not.

They keep the machines clean and have every three machines open. They are taking social distancing seriously. I love that they are helping us stay safe while focusing on our fitness goals.

Beware of the 30 day cancellation scam. Even if you cancel your membership they keep your money for another month. I gave a 30 day notice to cancel and still got charged the next month and I no longer live in the area. Keep my money thieves!!! How Christian of them. Got robbed on Easter of all times!!!

UPDATE: Called the general manager like I was told to, left a message been waiting a few days for a return call and nothing. Pretty much tells me the help I plan to get.! So Unprofessional!!

Since American Family opened back up following closing due toCovid, it has been near impossible to get into any of the classes. I filled out the form to cancel my membership. At the same time, I filled out a survey. A few weeks later, someone called me to talk about the survey. When I asked the status of my cancellation request. She told me they never got it. She sent me the link to fill the form out again.
I teceived an email that they had rrceived the request to cancel. A few days later there was a charge on my credit card for the gym. When I sent them an email asking about this, they told me I was a member until the end of the year because I had to give 30 days notice. This is a crock
Do NOT join this gym. Not a friendly staff especially when you want to cancel your membership Due to COVID they should have not required the 30 day notice.

Very uncomfortable by the consistent lack of masks on members who aren't exercising. When I brought it up to the front desk, they wouldn't talk to members without masks. Obvious that they just want to post signs and not enforce anything. Sad.

Masters of manipulation and fine print. Tried to cancel because of the Covid crisis and they were unable to cancel my contract over the phone or digitally. In this day and age it is just plain manipulation. When I finally did get around to stopping in the gym to cancel they said this offer had expired. Covid hasn't expired, so why should the ability to cancel expire? Very disappointing and I've contacted a lawyer. I will pay any amount of money to stand up for what is right. I'm tired of businesses taking advantage of people. Where did morality go?

Great place for my granddaughter's 8th birthday party. Kids loved being in the pool and the room was nicely decorated for the day. Several moms worked out while the trainer and lifeguard watched the girls. Well done, AmFamFit!

**Buyer aware**
It is almost impossible to cancel the contract at this gym. I have a month to month contract where I should able to cancel just at my will any time. But they forced a 30-day notice requirement that they will keep charge you after you give a canceling notice for several months. This is pure scam.

I absolutely love this gym! The front desk staff is so friendly and welcoming, and the facilities and equipment are very clean for a gym as busy as this one. AmFam offers a wide variety of group exercise classes at different times which is great for those with busy schedules. I will miss this gym dearly when I move!

Joined AFF so that I can get back into shape for running a marathon in Nov. I used to run marathons and for training just ran. With AFF classes and feedback from instructors I feel I am in better shape with both strength and cardio than just running. Thank you.

I absolutely love the facility and staff. I’m greeted by my name when I walk in. The classes are a blast, and really geared toward what I’m trying to accomplish. The environment is very family friendly and comfortable. My family loves to go to American Family Fitness!

Gym looks to be pretty nice but.....I went in to inquire about a membership for my family of 5, as summer time is here... I was told to fill out a form and wait in the lounge. 25 minutes later still sitting there. So I left and probably won’t come back as I went to the desk and there were 4 associates standing and said oh he ain’t come get you???! Not a good look for someone trying to spend money with you.

I always receive a warm welcome from the staff when I enter the Fitness Center. I have been a member for 15 years. The facilities are well equipped and maintained, the staff always helpful.
