Best gym in the metro in terms of price, value and culture. Some haters recently have been posting complete nonsense. Some fool posted that AmFam is racist? I witnessed that idiot's jump roping antics over a few occurrences. He was jump roping outside of a quiet yoga class and refused to heed warnings from instructors and eventually the club manager. Probably goes to show the area is changing, which it certainly is and AmFam increasingly has to deal with some lower quality people. AmFam has taken its licks since COVID. Fewer people go to the gym these days. But for what you pay, AmFam has always been a great option and there are few competitors.

Already a member of American Family Fitness but want to give this gym a try. Wow! First gym that I did not see any broken equipment! Usually people see notes stating "broken". Even the gym I go to have broken down equipment. Very clean. This gym have all the equipment to fit your needs. The gentleman Nick that works at the desk would answer questions quickly and is very friendly. He is also knowledgeable with all the equipment. I plan to use this gym if in this area. I had a very disappointing experience at American Family Fitness involving the manager, Lonnie. I witnessed him tell a Black member, who was simply jump roping, to move out of the area. When the member questioned it, Lonnie threatened to kick him out — and then actually did. It was shocking and felt discriminatory, especially since the member wasn’t bothering anyone or breaking rules.

This kind of behavior creates a very uncomfortable and unwelcoming environment. A fitness center should be a place where everyone feels safe and respected, regardless of race. Management needs to seriously address how situations like this are handled, because no one should be treated this way.

There have been a number of times where I came with my kids during kid zone hours and kids zone was either closed due to no staff or “at capacity”. One time we were told that only 1 worker was in there with 18 children by staff as the reason our kids could not go in. Just one worker is not safe practice ever. We were told this standard was “better ratios than required”.

For holidays, there is no way to know the holiday kid zone hours without being there in person to look/ask. Their app does not show it. I’ve called before to ask and when I got there was told it already closed and whoever informed me via phone that it would be open was wrong.

Zero understanding from staff about frustration from having showed up so many times in a week during kid zone hours only to not be able to work out, having to take the kids home. Staff are friendly otherwise - just more frustrated with the customer for asking questions than understanding.

Their app does not show when things are closed like sauna for repair. They send several emails weekly noting when anything in the gym is under maintenance, which is beyond unhelpful - it’s annoying and time consuming. I would have to sort through them all and note if any of them said sauna is working again to figure out if it’s the case.

When they close the sauna for repairs, it takes FOREVER to repair and again, you’d have to go there to find out it is still not open. The sauna is the biggest reason we chose am fam.

We were told very directly during the tour that this location does not get crowded at the 5pm time. We did not ask about it - the information was offered us. However, we have found that it is extremely full at that time to the point that you’ll have to wait for machines and have difficulty finding a spot to do floor work.

I’ve let things slide several times, but enough is enough. Swift Creek American Family Fitness has proven time and time again that they don’t care about their members.

Most recently, I arrived at the gym only to be stopped at the front desk and told I had an “outstanding balance”—even though they’ve successfully withdrawn payments from my account without issue. They claimed a charge was declined and that they texted me twice, but I never received a single message. Instead of handling this quickly at the front desk, they made me wait unnecessarily for a membership rep, only for that person to hand me a phone number to call—something the front desk could have easily done.

On top of that, I had already taken my pre-workout and had a meeting in two hours, meaning they completely wasted my time over a mistake on their end. And this isn’t the first time—I’ve dealt with similar billing issues before.

Beyond that, the gym itself isn’t great. The equipment is outdated, the place isn’t very clean, and I’ve even shown up for a workout only to find out they randomly decided to close early—with no notice.

I’ve put up with all of this for too long, but this was the final straw. I filed a request to cancel my membership because I refuse to keep dealing with a gym that has terrible communication, poor management, and shady business practices. Avoid this place and take your money somewhere that actually values its members.

Facility lacks in cleanliness and has dated equipment. You are better served joining the Swift Creek YMCA. Visited once, expressed my concerns and cancelled. BEWARE: because I canceled past the 3 day window I was left having to pay 3 months and a facility fee per their terms and conditions. When I expressed dissatisfaction the response was making sure they could collect every penny contractually obligated. Which is fine, I was seeking quality and not the cheapest option... but beware of the predatory nature of this company when you have an issue to address.

I agree with other reviews saying that the hours are rough. Without a doubt the most restrictive hours of operation of any gym I’ve ever been a member of. Super disappointing.
More importantly though, it seems that the sauna and hot tub are constantly closed for maintenance, and the equipment is badly in need of updating. Bikes with heart rate monitors that seldom work and fans that grind during use, rusty weight machines and I don’t think there’s a single bench without cracked and peeling leather. Locker doors occasionally falling off their hinges. I recently stepped into Planet Fitness down the street (still $10 a month) and was surprised to see much newer and nicer looking equipment.
I’m going to stick around because this gym is so close to my home, but for the high price I definitely hope that they at least have a plan to update their equipment soon.

I regret to express my dissatisfaction with the customer service I recently encountered. Specifically, I had a challenging experience with Stacy, who, despite a mere five-minute delay past the designated cutoff time, refused entry to my guest. Moreover, when I sought to escalate the matter and communicate with a manager to address the situation, I was met with resistance, as Stacy did not facilitate the opportunity for such a discussion. This lack of flexibility and accessibility to higher management is disheartening and significantly impacted my overall impression of the service provided.

I had been to this location numerous times in the past as a guest for quite a few LATE night workout sessions. Equipment variety was top tier. Friendly management, clean environment, and great late night workout environment vibe. My experience at AMFam is mostly marred by their uncaring management and their rude and totally inappropriate clientele. As a handicapped individual, it is unfortunate that handicap facilities in the ladies dressing room is very limited with 1 bathroom stall and one shower marked handicapped, but the audacity of the young women feeling entitled to utilize the handicapped facilities when they are indeed not physically handicapped is appalling. You do not realize the importance of these facilities until you are indeed handicapped where the bars on the wall are necessary for you to function. Just because you might have had a "shoulder surgery" in the past, this does not make you handicapped when you can raise your arms like a normal person and change clothes as I personally watched you do. You just wanted the extra space to do your thing. It is so unfortunate that people today have no respect or regard for those that are actually handicapped and need those facilities. Guess the self indulgence is just another example of the total lack of common courtesy to your fellow members.
As far as uncaring management, I have questioned the lack of enforcing policies in the pool area regarding proper attire and a specific person not having control of his bathing suit, thus exposing himself. Nothing was ever done to correct this situation even though I wrote multiple letters to management and the owner. A lot of our problems in this country comes from mentally unstable individuals and the authorities always say, " see something, say something." You never know when someone is harmless or harmful. Unfortunately, the authority of AMFam does not care to address these problems within their facility.
My last complaint has to do with handicap parking. The American Disabilities Act has specific policies regarding the location of handicap parking and the proximity to the entrance to the building. This facility does not meet those requirements. When I brought this to their attention, they could of cared less. The handicapped door to the building is on the right center and the handicap parking is on the far left of the entrance. It does not take a rocket scientist to see what is wrong with this scenario, but again the management can not be bothered. It is unfortunate that the management of this facility has lost their perspective of valuing all of their customers.

My friend Chas was an active member of American Family Fitness at Swift Creek for 20 years until today.
He is a wheelchair user with Multiple Sclerosis. He drives a wheelchair accessible van. Someone parked in the one space that Amfam has for wheelchair users. The person who parked there did not use a wheelchair. Management at Amfam kicked Chas out of the gym after being a loyal 20 year member because they said the woman accused him of using colorful language. Management was not there to witness. I will personally not be a member of Amfam after this. I have heard of other problems with this location.

I was going to AFF since I was 19 and ended up getting incarcerated for a period of time so the first thing I did when I got out was go back to AFF because I always felt welcome there and always had a good experience. I never thought one time of checking out another gym. But since I have been going back I don’t feel welcome or that hood vibe in their gyms anymore. There is lack of communication with their staff. I mainly go to the gym off Ironbridge Rd and sometimes to the one on Hull st when I get off work. The one on Ironbridge feels like I’m working out in a high school gym if that. I pay a lot of money compared to other gyms. The main thing is they’re not even 24 hours anymore which is a big downside. Because of the hours, miss communication with staff, and non gym like vibe I get while working out me and my sister canceled our membership and will be going to Golds Gym. I use to really enjoy AFF but it has really gone downhill.

Best part of this gym is the many “gym friends” to engage with. Some of the staff is also very friendly. Biggest problem is it takes forever to fix equipment. Cables broken, adjustment knob off of decline bench, straps holding heavy bags are broke, plus you have to search for clamps every time you use free weights. Always an excuse starting with “The parts are on order.” They can’t keep a few things like a cable in storage or if you need something, you can’t borrow from the stock of another gym that has them in storage? It’s just not part of their business plan to inquire with the customer what we prefer. It’s always what the staff prefers as they see it. Swift Creek should learn from their other gyms like Midlothian. On the other hand, the gym is extremely clean and most equipment is well organized.

My husband Julian and I go to swift creek location pretty often, hands down AFF is the best gym. Everyone is super nice, professional, & the gym is super clean, but the biggest reason we chose this gym was because of their amazing child care! Swift creek is our favorite location to go to with our kids (1.5 & 4 years old). The manager of the children’s program does an amazing job and everyone in there is so great, we literally only leave them with family or AFF. Can’t say enough good things!

Im extremely disappointed in the way this gym has handled their hours of operation and communication to members. After Covid they reopened to a modified schedule. Members are expected to continuously pay their current gym membership amount although the gym is no longer rendering the services members initially signed their contract for. When you call to ask when they will resume to their normal schedule they are unable to give you any additional timeline but you are required to continuously pay. They have an open freeze option but you have to pay a fee and it also continues to push you further in your contract. I am now paying for a gym that is no longer 24 hours and I am now also paying for a new gym. It is unfortunate that a gym that I once loved no longer cares about their members but will continue to make a dollar off their back for their profit

I was doing Power Cleans on the Olympic Weightlifting Platform. It is standard to drop the weight from the front rack position when performing a power clean. This is what the platform and the bumper plates are specifically designed for. However, when I dropped the weights, a trainer came up to me and asked if the weight was too heavy for me in a sarcastic tone. I’m still going to keep coming here because I love using the pool but just know that if you enjoy Olympic weightlifting, don’t get fooled by the platform. It’s not for you.

However, my only complaint is the hours. You guys should have already moved to opening at least by 5am. School has started and many parents need the earlier hours for workouts. Great facilities, friendly staff and a comfortable environment. This location has features that other gyms call amenities, e.g., steam room, lap pool, aquatic aerobics, and beverage bar.

I also have a personal trainer, Scott. A great trainer that plans and executes workout regimen to build strength and burn some calories. Motivates and challenges all while having fun!

I have never felt more comfortable at a gym than the swift creek American Family Fitness center. Every employee I’ve ran into has made my experience a very pleasant one. They are all so friendly, nice, and really make you feel comfortable with asking any questions you may have. I also would like to say the kid zone has been a MAJOR help and make you feel so comfortable to leave your precious babies with them for a couple hours while you workout. I used to be a member of Golds Gym and have never received the same treatment or friendly, comfortable atmosphere. They are also one of the cleanses things gyms i have been too which also is a huge plus. Amfam is a little more pricier and a locked in contract makes you have a little doubt but it is well worth the money spent and I’m glad my family decided to join!

I absolutely love this gym! It is always clean and the service is always top notch. The daycare center is really why I am writing the review... I have a fairly fussy baby and they are always so caring and sweet with him. I have only left my little guy with family members and the people in this daycare, I feel so comfortable with them! Love AMFAM! Love that they have everything...pool, sauna, hot tube, steam room, personal trainers, smoothie bar, swim lessons and almost every class you can think of.

AFF, Swiftcreek, is a great place to workout ! There’s classes for everyone and if you’re not into taking classes there’s a machine and/or workout area for anything you’d like to do. The people are awesome, helpful, knowledgeable, friendly and always available to assist or answer any questions. Any questions you might have regarding fitness in general or specific issues you’d like to work on, there’s someone there to answer or help. It’s truly a family center with something for everyone. The physical property is clean and the machines and equipment are kept in top condition. My wife and I have been members for two years and love the place!

The child care is what brought me in to American Family. At others gyms I would cringe as I left my children because it didn’t feel safe the numbers were to high and it was one big open area. This would lead to me not going at all. But at American Family it is much more organized. And I feel safer. Also love the multiple locations and the pirate ship slide at Midlothian is awesome as well as having a location close to short pump so I can squeeze in pool time and shopping time with the kids, and the closest one to me Swift creek is where I work out while my children are being cared for in kid zone

I like the classes and most of the equipment is well-kept with the exception of the equipment for the Strive class, which desperately needs to be upgraded and/or replaced, especially the cardio equipment. What is that yearly fee paying for?

AmFam gyms lack gym etiquette. Either the managers and/or employees are not properly trained or are scared to address members who are rude and inconsiderate of other paying members, as if the club revolves around these members and they can do whatever they feel like doing...as if they are the only paying members in the club.

Specifically referring to members talking on their cell phones while using equipment and especially in the locker rooms and sauna, as well as, members blasting music/videos through their headphones. Nobody else wants to hear your conversation or your stupid music, videos, base, treble, etc.

To the members talking on their cell phones, especially on the speakerphone, blasting their music and/or FaceTiming in the sauna, shame on all of you! That especially goes for the female who has the nerve to hum and sing in the sauna. Several of these members have the audacity to get an attitude when you ask them not to do it. Imagine that?

To add further insult to injury, this club does not always update the schedule with sub instructors. How hard can that be? I do not appreciate wasting my valuable time by going to a specific gym for a specific class with a specific instructor just to find out that that instructor is not there. I also noticed it members do not wipe down the equipment after they use it. Just trifling!

I already travel from raggedy Colonial Heights to Midlothian to get away from those people who do not know how to conduct themselves in public and that nasty unisex sauna. I have had it with AmFam. Membership at this gym costs more than all of the other gyms, yet this gym does not require any thing of its members? It is obvious that all this gym is concerned with is collecting payments.

I will not be paying for a membership at a club that does not respect all of its members or expect all of its members to be respectful of all of its paying members. I will be going elsewhere once my contract is up and I would not recommend this club for the price of the membership and the lack of gym etiquette and/or consideration for others.
