I've been going to this school since early November and it already feels like home to me. Everyone is so humble and respectful and enjoyable to be around. The instructors are amazing and very professional and the classes are a lot of fun, mixed in with some hard work. I've seen people do so many incredible things at this school and it's really inspiring. Since I started here I feel better mentally and physically and it's made a huge positive impact on me. If you want to have a gun birthday party American Freestyle is the place to have it. I started doing Karate around June of 2022. My neighbor invited me to come to class with her, and I did. I have been doing Karate since then and have loved every part of it since I started. I had absolutely no Karate background at all and I started at age 53. I was intimidated by some of the movements and techniques, but almost two years later, I have seen tremendous progress and improvement with everything I have learned. If anyone is wondering about starting Karate but has reservations because of age or limitations, trust me, you can do this! I appreciate everything about American Freestyle Karate, including all the incredible instructors.

Our son has been attending AFK for about 6 months and we could not be more pleased with what we have seen him accomplish. His confidence, manners, and attitude have all taken a major step forward. Where do I start.. my son went to one class I saw a huge difference in the second class.. self confidence self respect self love!! These are just a couple things that improved!! Two of our kids are students here, and it has been a wonderful experience. Me and my wife came to freestyle for a couples self defense class and I was so worried my anxiety would get the best of me and I wouldnt be able to participate. I have been trying to write a review for 3 days! Can not find good enough words to say how AWESOME AFK is!!! Master Bowersox is THE BEST! He makes us work hard....he makes us laugh....he loves and cares about all his students! His Staff is wonderful! ...Really caring and smart ....ALOT of personal attention! It's a big family there! We are loving our experience with American Freestyle. My daughter has ASD and ADHD- and all the coaches have been amazing with her. Her attention in class has improved and the sense of accomplishment she gets by earning strips and belts- is so amazing. Not only do they understand her needs for some stimming- they also hold her to a reasonable expectation in line with other students- making her feeling more like a peer and not her diagnosis being a reason for noticeably different expectations.

We’ve been very impressed with the program here at American Freestyle Karate. My daughter started taking classes this fall and had enjoyed every single one. I started when I was 10 and I was really shy and I wouldn't talk to anyone, but after I started I became more confident in myself and now I am an instructor and teaching in front of classes. All of the instructors are really nice and really fun to work with and it is really fun to be in their classes. karate is one of the best decisions that I have ever made because if I didn't take karate I would still be really shy and have no confidence in myself. Karate has also taught me multiple life skills along the way of my journey to black belt and has really helped me mature more and make better life decisions. Karate has changed my life for the better!

I love this place. Beginners classes are fun, then as you get into the Intermediate classes there fun but with a lil more sweat i can only imagine what advance classes are like but im almost there. Our 7 yo grandson takes karate here. I like that although he is not yet truly focused when taking the class, many others are very serious about it, and that is fine. He understands that in order to move up he will have to master certain skill levels, so it is more or less up to him. But there isn't a great deal of peer pressure, so he can either really delve into it or just enjoy the learning. I (Dean's wife writing the review) took a women's self defense class from one of the instructor's, and was very impressed with what I learned in that one class. All of the instructors are very personable and understanding of the great age ranges of the student's, therefore allowing them to learn and perform at their own pace while still instructing the mature or highly skilled students. I am 55 yo and have thought very seriously about starting myself, and would feel totally comfortable in doing so right along with my grandson!

I enrolled my son in AFK Staunton hoping that he would have a lot fun and learn a little karate along the way. What we have ended up getting is so much more!

The slightly clumsy, tender-hearted, 7-year-old that I enrolled has garnered much more than a few cool karate moves during the last 18 months. The intangible, yet life-altering skills he is acquiring are the things I am most proud of and the most surprised and excited about. The little fella who would get off the bus with his head hung low after being teased at school, now jumps off the bus with a smile on his face and usually has a story to tell about how he just shrugs things off and how he feels confident and able to stand up for himself and others. I was hopeful karate would help his motor skills and coordination, which it certainly has, but the confidence boost and feelings of self-worth that accompanied it are incalculable.

My son enjoyed karate so much that he asked me to participate with him. Therefore, I also joined as a member and attend both the family and adult classes weekly. The energy in the family class is palpable and the triumphant looks on the kids faces when they master a new skill is a sight to behold. The adult classes are an enjoyable way to blow off a little steam after a long day and a great way to get in a little exercise while having fun with a great group of people. And the ability to defend myself or my family should the need arise doesn’t hurt either!

Master Bowersox and his team of instructors are affable, highly knowledgeable and have a knack for making even the most complicated of moves sound straightforward and clear for all students, no matter their level of experience. They are truly the heart and soul of AFK Staunton and the pride and commitment they feel toward their students is exhibited daily.

To say that I am grateful we have found AFK Staunton would be an understatement. Master Bowersox and his team are contributing invaluable tools to my son, myself and our family that will last a lifetime and for that, we will be forever indebted.
