Our experience was very similar to many people who have left reviews of Apex Gymnastics (both here and on other review sites). Aside from a few smaller/annoying issues (e.g. like having to watch most of the classes through a window while standing outside) the bigger issue is that many of teachers/instructors just aren’t suited for children. They don’t know much (if anything at all) about children. They have no idea how to interact with them, motivate them, discipline/reward them, etc.

If this were just an issue with the coaches for their competitive gymnastics team I don’t think it would be as big of a problem. But in our case, our daughter was just in a recreational class (she took a class in two recreational sessions) and those instructors had no business around kids. For some of these kids it was their first time doing anything gymnastics related so they’re going to be confronted with certain things that scare them/things they’re not comfortable with at first. And that’s fine. However, multiple times I saw kids crying because they didn’t want to do something and rather than allow that kid to move on to the next task they singled them out, put them to the side, and wouldn’t let the kid participate in the things they were comfortable doing unless they did whatever it was they were uncomfortable with. It’s pretty absurd, specifically in a recreational class. And my daughter had 2 similar experiences.

To their credit, when I called the office the first time to bring this to their attention… the office manager was very willing to listen and seemed to be glad I called to explain what happened to my daughter and what I’d seen with other kids, but ultimately, it happened again (both to my kid and others) so we just decided to be done with the place. I believe the names of the teachers I saw that seemed to be the least “equipped” for instructing/being around children were Brandon and Andrew.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t recommend APEX, at least not for recreational classes/learning.

My daughter has thoroughly enjoyed being on the Xcel team here. We switched from another area gym because of bullying allowed to continue on the team. Apex’s culture is a wonderful team environment supported by caring coaches and staff.

Great gymnastics facility, great people all around but why can’t anyone shovel the snow from the sidewalks and put some salt down for these kids! Very dangerous, I know we pay plenty of money for a little extra effort in this department don’t we!

This place is bright and clean. The instructors are very nice and really good with the kids. The one thing that is a bummer is that you can't stay and watch. You can stand outside and watch thru the window.

The coaches at Apex are good and seem to care for the kids on their teams. Communication as to the status of each child could be better - after a year we have yet to hear anything from the coaches as to how well our child is doing .
The administration of Apex is not very good. If your child is on one of the teams, you’re expected to go to a minimum number of meets per year. If you decide for your child not to attend any meet that falls on a practice date, there are no make-ups and no credit on the monthly fee. Generally, whatever concerns we have brought up with the front office are answered in reasonable time, but with a marked “take it or leave it” attitude that lacks any empathy. I suppose they have enough business, since they’re one of the few good gymnastics places in the area, so they don’t need to worry if someone is unhappy with anything they force on families. Communications with short notice changes are also not that great and frequently lack important details.

During the tough times, like now with businesses forced to be closed, Apex Owner and management immediately switched gears to offer a Zoom conditioning and workout program to members. No fuss, just join. My gymnast daughter has been as committed to this as to the physical gym practices, and it has helped with the isolation. That flexibility and business acumen makes Apex a favorite for us.

During normal times, the program is clear, regimented, and focused on development of skills, with low pressure performance, but recognition and pride for accomplishment. The periodic "open house" sessions allow you to try the program with your child, before committing.

Apex has been fantastic during the pandemic. Going on walks around the neighborhood is a nice activity for families these days, but it’s not enough for my active gymnast. She loves the at-home Apex classes via zoom. Her older sister who is not a gymnast also participates, and warms my heart that they can do this together.

This is a tough time for everybody, and Apex has dealt thoughtfully with this unique situation. I appreciate their positivity, flexibility, and problem-solving. After reading all of the reviews on this site, I can say I have had very much opposite experiences of those who were disappointed. My daughter has been at Apex for four years, and they have always been professional. When the front desk is not attended, I don’t consider this to be a problem because they are very responsive to my emails. All of her coaches have been kind to us and our daughter, giving us helpful feedback. They model and teach her how to be hard-working, respectful, cooperative, and tenacious. I’m really grateful for their influence on her not only as an athlete, but as a person.

Apex was always willing to accommodate my daughter when she was injured this year. The coaches really went above in showing her that they were concerned with her wellbeing first over her competing. During this pandemic I’ve been really impressed with how they choose to handle the situation and make sure that families new they could stop payments if needed and no questions asked.

Terrific environment for children to learn and excel in their skills and love of the sport. Owner/Operator runs a tight ship and programs are well-organized, with excellent parent/athlete communication. Based on my experience in the past decade, this is by far the best for tumblers in NOVA.

We love Apex. Our daughter has been attending Apex for nine years. Most of the same coaches when we started there are still there today! We have found Apex to be very flexible with two practice times for our daughters team for those kids who get out of school late. The staff is also very responsive to emails. We highly recommend Apex for gymnasts of any skill level.

Took my 3 year old for class and he just wasn't ready--very upset and did not want to participate in the chaotic atmosphere. I think he may be ready in another year. I explained this to the gym and they said I would still need to pay for an additional month since the drop enrollment notice must be given on the first day of the next billing cycle. So after one class when it just didn't work, I have to continue to pay for 2 months. Even when he is ready for this type of activity we will find another gym- this business is not friendly for young children wanting to try things out in a positive and pleasant atmosphere. I recently enrolled him in another activity and the policy at the business is to not sign a contract until the child really shows they like the activity-they allow 2 weeks free and a two month trial before you sign a contract or have to pay for additional months if you cancel. Hope Apex can remember what it is like to have small children and keep them happy so they want to continue activities--suggest they relook their business approach.

Great for all ages. Our 2-year-old daughter had so much fun that our 10-year-old son asked to take classes, too.
