Bodymass is an awesome gym for strength training. My fiancee and I were newbies to lifting, and have always been very intimidated by big gyms. Bodymass is a small team atmosphere where we get a lot of hands on training from great coaches. We've been members for more than 5 years, and have loved every class!

This was my first time trying Bodymass Gym. Matt was friendly and welcoming. He asked about my workout background and was attentive to my form and helping me find the right weight/resistance challenge for my fitness level. The total body workout was truly total body. It was a great use of the hour, including a warm up with mobility moves and dedicated strength work that you can tailor to your level and needs even in a group training setting. Side note: Everyone was friendly and inviting and had great things to say about the gym. I'll definitely go back. Thanks, Matt!

Bodymass is a terrific gym. The trainers are the best Iβve ever had, which are quite a few over many years of working out in gyms across the area. They truly know their stuff and make sure you are doing things properly and safely, and work on strength and flexibility to maximize mobility and minimize the risk of injury. They work with you to identify your goals and figure out what workouts are best for you β group classes, private training, or semi-private (my favorite). With semi-private training they provide a workout plan tailored to my specific goals, but present it in a group environment that provides support and camaraderie, making the best gym experience for me. They also provide excellent nutrition services, as well as composition and Resting Metabolic Rate testing, which helps to zero-in on a plan to meet all your health and fitness goals. Plus, everyone is fun and supportive. Just the best!!

This is an awesome gym. It focuses on strength training primarily. Teaches you how to use a barbell if you don't know. Doesn't mix cardio and strength as much, so you can actually prioritize form and building strength. Matt, Emily, and Brendan are all awesome instructors. Also love the class time options they have.

I've been going to BodyMass regularly for several months now, and it's the best gym and fitness community I've found so far after years of trying different gyms, boutique and otherwise. I had been thinking about getting into lifting and strength training for a while, and BodyMass has made it really easy and accessible! The smaller classes (10 people or fewer) make it so that the coaches are really able to help you with form and technique, and you quickly feel a sense of community with the other classmates. It's always a positive, non-judgmental environment, and it's been great to track my workouts and see how much stronger I've been getting each week. The workouts don't use any gimmicks or proprietary equipment -- just classic bodyweight, dumbbells, kettlebells, and barbells on the squat rack. All in all, a great community, really knowledgeable and helpful coaches, and real results!

Bodymass has been my go-to gym for almost two years! The group classes are the best in the DMV! I joined them to build my confidence with lifting free weights and to build strength through progressive overload. The classes are small enough that you still get one-on-one instruction and can push yourself safely. The coaches are ALL fantastic and the community Iβve become a part of is supportive and inspiring.
Laura is one of the newer coaches at Bodymass. When I sign up for her class I know that I will get a great workout and have fun doing it! She is friendly and encouraging with all of her students. She is super knowledgeable and points out ways to tweak your form so that you get the most out of each exercise. I especially appreciate her working with my injuries and offering up alternative exercises so that I can still get the most out of my workout without any pain. Laura is a fantastic addition to the stellar Bodymass team!

I am so happy to be back at Bodymass Gym in Arlington for morning small group training sessions. The pandemic took a toll on me and while I participated in live virtual classes, I lost ground. I was reluctant to return but quickly rebuilt my confidence and began to see progress again! There are multiple things I love about Bodymass Gym 1) high-quality trainers with a keen eye for optimizing posture and form, 2) 4- week purpose-built routines, 3) supportive group participants, 4) gym dog- trainers who welcomed you in and supervised routines. I've been attending Bodymass Small Group Build classes for over 5 years. Without a doubt, it's the best fitness and weight training program I've ever tried and the one that I've stuck to the longest.
If you're like me, when I was first starting at Bodymass it had been several years since I had done any serious weight training or conditioning. I wasn't confident in my lifting form and after multiple failed attempts at using fitness apps or programs from the Internet I decided to give the trainer-lead Small Group classes at Bodymass a try. I'm in the best shape I've been in years and very happy with my results.
The trainers at Bodymass are all very friendly, approachable, and provide high-quality instruction. They are knowledgeable, happy to answer any questions, and will meet you where you are in your fitness journey. All experience levels are made to feel welcome.
In my opinion, the programming at Bodymass is very well designed. In Build, the programs and routines are changed up each month so new lifts are rotated in and out. You never get a chance to plateau with certain muscle groups, because you're always challenging different ones each month. You also get to learn and improve a variety of different lifts over time instead of focusing on a small handful. The exercises at the beginning half of each class also help to reinforce good form and warm up for the heavier lifts during the second half.
If you live in or near Arlington or DC and are tired of trying to kickstart your fitness resolutions each year at the inflexible, corporate-run big name gym chains, I encourage you to try out the locally grown Bodymass Gym. They will help keep you on track and achieve your fitness goals. Life in the DC area is often too hectic to devote much time into trying to plan and learn an effective fitness routine. Let the team of trainers and professionals at Bodymass take care of the planning for you without breaking the bank. Show up, put in the effort, be consistent and you will see results too.

Iβve always had challenges consistently going to the gym and doing my exercises the right way. In need of expert guidance, I typically found classes to be too impersonal and personal trainers to be too expensive. So my previous attempts to establish a workout routine would eventually fizzle.
After discovering the Small Group class membership option at Body Mass, I now consistently go to the gym, receive personalized guidance from experts, and continuously learn new exercises. I feel great and recently upgraded to their unlimited package.

Truly the best gym!! Love this gym- I've been going here on/off for over a year and the trainers are so supportive! This was my first introduction to strength training and I'm small (5ft. 8in, 125 lbs) so I was a little bit nervous about it! I still only lift light weights but they've never made me feel bad about that! The classes (I enroll in their "build" classes) are really conveniently timed throughout the day (morning, afternoon, and evening) so you can truly work in their classes with any schedule. They also have upper body, lower body, and total body days; you can go throughout a week and get multiple types of workouts in. The trainers help thoroughly throughout the workouts and they're always willing to help show you how to do it properly. Two of my fave trainers are Nicole and Mariah!!

***2021 Update - still a member and still immensely grateful for this incredible gym and trainers. Bodymass has done a phenomenal job pivoting in the face of the pandemic, and is poised to rise like a phoenix from the ashes!
If you just want to move your body and sweat, you can go to any flavor of the week "gym" to splat and WOD it up with your bros -- or be gawked at by the bros. You could also just light a bag of money on fire and achieve essentially the same outcome.
Or, you could invest in yourself and change your life at Bodymass.
Two years in to partaking in their "small group classes", I can, with a clear conscious, say this place is the best (the quotes around small group classes is because it's more like personal training that doesn't feel like personal training when you pay your credit card bill). The work put in at Bodymass pays dividends outside of the gym - more focus to make each day more productive and physically stronger in all of my other sports and just in life.
Primarily strength training, every four weeks a new program begins that builds on the previous. Crafted to be useful for all abilities from the person who has never picked up a dumbbell to the pro power lifter, no one should ever say, "ooooo weight lifting isn't for me". The HIIT classes are 30 minutes of heavenly hell that really kick things up a notch. Nutritional coaching, body composition monitoring, and in-house physical therapists that ACTUALLY get your problems fixed rounds out their offerings and majorly sets them apart.

My husband and I have been Bodymass members since the beginning, and quickly grew to love the sense of community surrounding the gym, which is due in large part to the care and thoughtfulness of its owners Kris and Virginia. In addition to surrounding their clients with amazing trainers, they put a true focus on formulating workouts around form and enhancing mobility, which is so often overlooked in traditional gym/group training settings. Great gym where you can get a personal training experience in a small class setting that wont break the bank. The trainers are great, helpful and very personable. Don't be intimidated all fitness levels are welcomed with open arms. Great gym and even better community! I came to Bodymass after moving to the area and I was looking for a gym that offered strength-based classes. Having trained at a commercial gym for a couple years, I wanted a place that would provide training structure/instruction to progress my strength while minimizing injury. Bodymass has done all this and more.
I have joined a phenomenal community here where I feel welcome and encouraged everyday. I've personally gotten to know many of the members as well as the coaches and it's been so rewarding to see both my progress and the progress of others. There are people from all fitness background, beginner to advanced, so I can always find someone pushing me to become better.
I workout at both the Arlington and DC locations; they are both excellent.

I took 4 classes here through Classpass, the staff aside from 1 person came across as cold or condescending. Aside from that in one class we did a circuit consisting of shoulder press, curls, rows and squats we were told if we dropped the weights we would have to do 50 pushups, during this circuit I felt an unusual pain in my left bicep but still decided to push through the circuit which has still been lingering several days after the workout. This approach is unacceptable and is inviting people to get injured as people should feel comfortable taking a break if they are feeling fatigued or if something doesn't feel right.
Conclusion: I would not recommend Bodymass if you are a novice to weightlifting or if you have a history of injuries or mobility issues. Some of the exercises and warm ups are pretty advanced so you would struggle with the workouts. If you are looking for group fitness classes in the dc area there are a lot better options for gyms which are beginner friendly with a warmer staff and environment.
Please disregard the owners comment on the bottom about the open house I originally planned to go to it but after my poor experience at my last workout I canceled it and will not be attending it and don't have any plans of giving Bodymass another chance.

Great gym with a great fitness philosophy/methodology. It is apparent that they put a lot of thought into their programs. They offer three main programs: Build, Blast, and Burn.
Build: Strength training focused on "the big lifts". The class begins with a warm-up and accessory exercises to compliment the big lift of the day (bench, squat, deadlift, shoulder-press). It's all very well put together and really helps develop the lift. There is no HIIT in these classes, but the pace does elevate the heart rate and provide some cardio benefit. They work on 4-week cycles and each cycle uses some variation of the big lifts to keep it fresh.
Blast: This is Bodymass's HIIT workout. It's not the most challenging HIIT class out there but it allows room for variation if you want more or less of a challenge. I was always able get a quality workout. Like "build" it's well thought out and serves to compliment other lifts and produces a result greater than the sum of it's parts.
Burn: A 30-minute cardio session. Can be a very challenging explosion of cardio output. Because of the fast pace of the class the quality of the session is more dependent on the trainer running it than their other offerings. Sign up for Virginia's classes for some of the best-run cardio workouts in the area.
Bodymass incorporates a great deal of evidence-based methodology in their programs. They also offer DEXA scans, RMR tesing, body composition challenges, and individual training. It was really cool to get DEXA scans before and after 6 intensive months of lifting. I subjectively felt I made progress, and also saw my results quantitatively. Would definitely recommend this gym.

This is the best workout studio I've ever been to! All of the instructors I've had have been great, helping me with my form and answering any questions I have. I highly recommend, especially if you want to work on your form or start building muscle.
Their high intensity class called Burn has almost made me puke a couple of times, but afterwards I felt great! If you're looking for a great high intensity class with a little bit of strength building that's the class for you! It's only 30 minutes but it'll make you work harder than any other 45 minute or hour long class I've taken.
I recommend their Build classes for anyone looking to perfect their form and increase overall strength.

Wow, where do I begin. First, Bodymass is the best gym I have ever been to, period. That says a lot coming from me as a TV host, sports anchor and reporter I have lived in six states and two countries and come from a very athletic family. What makes Bodymass stand out among the rest is the owners Virginia Kinkel and Kris Peterson. They are the most knowledgeable trainers I have ever worked with. Having covered professional athletes for 15 years and my brother is a former MLB pitcher, I have always had access to the best resources and I can tell you Virginia and Kris are the real deal. Not only are they experienced trainers, but they care about their clients success. This is not like other gyms I have gone to where the coaches are not monitoring proper form. They also make sure you activate the right muscles during active warm-ups and are very knowledgeable when it comes to injuries and prevention. The best part is the entire team at Bodymass are kind people and so are the members. The gym environment is very supportive, and not intimidating at all. I feel like it is family atmosphere every time I walk through the front doors. There is a reason Bodymass has top rating reviews. I am telling you, you wonβt find a better gym.

This is an amazing little gym in Arlington. The staff is super friendly....all of them! Thatβs unheard of at a gym. They work with individual needs and in intimate class sizes. Make sure to ask for CHASE!!!!

Bodymass Gym is an awesome facility. Their classes are so much better than the standard "HIIT" classes you find everywhere. They not only have a class that uses barbells (which is impossible to find) but the supervision by the owners and other trainers is top notch. They are constantly making sure you are in perfect position and pushing yourself!
