Affordable, clean and with many options of equipment and group classes from 6am to 9pm. It has activities for all ages and abilities aimed at education, training and community building.
YMCA is a truly diverse and open community gym. The addition of the Kindness cafe is another brilliant feature! 😃

Had the opportunity to work out at this YMCA while visiting the area.
First and foremost this is simply the most impressive YMCA I have ever been in from a size/structure perspective.
The staff I interacted with was friendly and professional on both days I exercised.
Weightlifting area was a bit on the small side and the only "complaint" I have is the dearth of rubber bumper plates. I believe there were two, twenty-five pound plates and that was it. Would be nice to see a proper selection of rubber bumper plates for deadlifts, barbell rows and so forth.
Overall an above average experience as a visitor.

Visiting from out of town- Beautiful facility, cute cafe in the front. Unfortunately, they do not allow children to go to the stay and play even if you have a family membership so could not take advantage of using the national membership. Don’t bother wasting your time going if it’s not your home gym. I had even called that morning to make sure it was included in the national system and they said yes and kids were welcome. Definitely not the case.

Best gym in Cville.
Because it’s community minded, welcoming and supportive of all people.
Great XTreme step hiphop and hiphop cardio and pilates classes.
The only negative is that it has a super frustrating frequency nonfunctional app that you’re supposed to sign up for classes on. And I wish they accepted Silver Sneakers, but they do have a sliding scale membership.
Very thankful that Brooks Family Y is here, and that I’m able to go!

The gym in its self is good. However the kids sports program for sports needs more supervision. The rules are that everyone gets equal playing time. These are kids! I read the rules thoroughly. However, the coaches for the 2024-25 fifth and sixth grade (Kings) played their kids most of the game while others played less than 4 minutes some games. We all payed for our kids to play. This is not jr varsity or AAU. This is a development league for kids. I payed $150 bucks to watch the coaches kids play while my child sit. This needs more supervision. I do not recommend putting your kids in the sports leagues here. Find another rec league of some sort. I would like my money back for not getting the service I paid for. And I am a pastor and they often use profanity around the kids! Inexcusable!!!!!

After a robbery here at the Brooks YMCA, I felt no compassion whatsoever from any team member extended to us. No follow up “Are you ok?” No phone call. Not one.i waited before I finally called them. However, I did get an email telling me my credit card didn’t get approved for my November dues. Well maybe that was because the thieves stole that and I didn’t have one, but thanks for letting me know. I’ll take care of that right away. I guess it’s not in the workers training to take the next step. If your car is stolen from the Brooks YMCA parking lot and your wallet is gone too , credit cards, drivers license, and your phone is gone too, house keys on key fob, oh well….. Sorry. (My husband and I who have been members for a few years now are the victims here, and take full responsibility for our car being stolen from their parking lot. Have never blamed the Y for not being thorough in their own investigation, of course. That’s not what I am talking about. It’s very upsetting to go for a swim then go out to see that your car is gone. Don’t expect anything from this facility as far as care. It’s not their job, they weren’t there when it happened. Happened in broad daylight. They saw nothing. Video?????. (FYI. Were we okay? No). They did let my husband use their phone to call the police……. his was in the car—- long gone by now. . Thanks for that by the way.

Very disappointed in this facility. They seem to have very little care for whether or not they are giving accurate and specific information. I am a member in another city. I called ahead of my visit and was told that I could use the childcare through the national YMCA program. When I arrived, I was told the opposite without apology or remorse. I had to pay for a membership with a “30 day” cancellation policy. I canceled the day I signed up, which was June 17, 2024. Instead of my membership expiring 30 days from cancellation, I am now paying for all of July as well. I want accurate expectations and for staff to care when it becomes apparent that I was not provided accurate information. Otherwise, the facilities are very nice and the childcare center had great staff members.

I love working out at the YMCA, the staff and gym community are all nice and friendly. That said, it is getting more and more crowded and they don’t seem to be investing the revenue from increased membership back into the facility. For example, there has been no new equipment or expansion to deal with the crowding. Also, instead of doing routine replacement of cracked and worn out pads on machines they have resorted to using black duct tape as a fix. Finally, there is no place on the website or a suggestion box in the facility to leave comments so I’m sharing that feedback here.

I agree with everyone about the very limited access to the pool. I was just swimming the other day in the 20 lane lap pool and they only had 2 of the 20 lanes available for lap swimmers. All of the other lanes were taken up with swim lessons and a club doing synchronized swimming. The other pool, the Family pool, could have had lanes for lap swimmers but did not. It was fully open then partly blocked off for a swim class. During the day, it is full of day camp kids. To me, this is mismanagement plain and simple. If you want to have all of these organizations use the pool, day camp and offer all of these lessons, why not stagger them so there is just one thing at a time? For instance, if the family pool is closed for camp, make sure there are some additional lanes open in the lap pool and have the swim lessons for one group at 5 and the other at 6 instead of 2 large groups all at the same time! It’s just common sense. Why do they have to be all at the same time? Also, why not use the family pool for lanes when the lap pool is taken up? How hard is it to plan better? And speaking of planning, all swimmers must reserve a lane and are supposed to be able to do so 24 hours in advance but the schedule lately only comes out within less than 4 hours so it is impossible to reserve lanes.
I have also had issues with the access to the stairs being blocked. They are supposed to be accessible for those who struggle to get in and out of the pool. Lately they’ve been blocked by the obstacle course and a synchronized swimming group. No one should have to wade through a bunch of people/kids or dive under ropes in a very tight space just to use the accessible entry and exit points of the pool. Why not put the wibit and these groups in lanes 1 and 2? It’s not rocket science!
We dropped the Y and are happily elsewhere. I know many other people either considering or just doing the same thing because this pool situation is ridiculous!

Fantastic gym and very friendly staff. I would give more stars, but swim lane availability is terrible. Members are consistently sidelined by various competitive swim programs that take over the pool for large blocks of time. Would not recommend this gym if you are looking for a place to swim.

I am dropping my family membership at the Y after several years. It is terribly overcrowded to the point where all swim lanes are taken up by lessons and groups so members cannot swim ( even when they have a reservation) and they ignore ADA requirements by blocking off handicap access to the pool (see below) with this silly WiBit (kids obstacle course) that they could put it in other lanes, but they refuse (and they do this despite me telling them numerous times this violates ADA regulations). They were rude to me for mentioning it, but I have a family member in a wheelchair who could not access the pool due to this! They also will close your swimming lane, while you’re swimming for “lessons” even though it’s supposed to be first come, first serve and you have a reservation! The Y does NOT care about its members. It cares about its groups and catering to kids and families. If you are single, handicapped, or love to swim, no matter how enticing that pool is…just know they do Not have room for you and do NOT care about handicap access. Maybe taking this to the ACLU will change their minds or sending an open letter to their donors? You lose government funding when you violate government laws…

I was a member for about a solid 1 year. I believe so and it was great amazing but our membership ended due to the financial aid needing to be renewed. which is completely understandable so being told we need to renew it we did and waited a week and called because the guy at the desk said it would be done that week. To my suprise they said they didn’t know when it would be done another week passed and I called again and they said the same thing I even gave them my phone number and they said a lady would probably call me tomorrow but nothing . Now I am at the third week haven’t received a call and you would think the Renew process would be faster than the first time you did it.

My love for this gym is real - y'all are nuts with this low rating!! Having been a personal trainer for a portion of my life, this gym is outstanding. It offers a variety of amenities like pool, 2 basketball courts, and 3...yes THREE levels of cardio, lifting, TRX, whatever-the-jungle-gym-thing on the bottom level is, group classes....you name it - this place has it and more! They have the most amazing Kindness Cafe as well so you can grab a coffee after your workout and go! With most prices going up for outdated equipment, support something good & get the best - be a part of this gym!

I used to be a member of this facility, but ended my membership due to it always being overcrowded and the entire building smelling like chlorine, which I am sensitive to. At that time, I would have given them 3/5 stars.
I'm dropping my rating to 1/5 stars after visiting the facility a few weeks ago. My elderly father got a membership there to get into better shape. He is clueless so I bought a day pass and we worked out together... me doing the exercise first, explaining the exercise, and then him doing the exercise. I've been to dozens of gyms and this is very common and not a problem.
But not at the Y! A trainer name Geri approached me and started scolding me that I am not allowed to personal train at the Y unless I am a paid personal trainer. She said several people approached her during our workout wondering why I was training this guy, and I was causing a lot of confusion... (I'm sure tons of people engrossed in their own workout stopped to go ask her about a father and daughter working out together).
I explained to Geri what I was doing and asked her if I'm not allowed to show my father some exercises on the machines. She said I was not unless we were working out together... "You do a set, he does a set." Which is great advice since that's exactly what I did.
Anyway, I wasn't about to start an argument with someone that clearly was approaching me just to assert authority and ruin my day. I'd love to chat with a GM, but their information isn't listed, so although I NEVER write negative reviews, I feel compelled to let others know that the Y pulls these types of shenanigans, especially after talking to other people in the area and finding out similar things have happened to them.
I understand the pros of these big box workout spaces, but if you live in the Charlottesville area, there are a lot of smaller gyms that offer much friendly and supportive environments.

Very disappointed in the process to register for swim classes. The person that is responsible for registering individuals for the classes does not follow through with registering the student. Then the day the class is to begin the student shows up without a space to be in the class. Never given an apology for dropping the ball or I willing to place the child in a class. Rude and uncaring.

The YMCA youth flag football really deteriorates in the last few years with their current athletic director. The AD made up rules during the seasons and don't follow their rule book. They talk about respect, but the Y staff has none. I know coaches and referees are fed up and left. I would leave 0 star if I can. My suggestion: do different youth sports elsewhere.

Membership dues increased twice in 3 months after just signing up with the claim that the increase was to pay their employees a living wage. I asked a trainer and a front desk person if their wages had increased and of course the response was there was no change in pay. That is dirty business for a nonprofit. The only positive that I have is the p.e. coach was amazing for my children, Wish I could give this location zero stars!

Took my son and I there many times to workout and if he couldn’t play basketball he would stand next to me while I worked out. Never a problem. Until one staff member called us out and told us to leave the workout floor. I told them we have never had an issue before and never told my son couldn’t stand next to me while I worked out. Today I saw a kid younger than my son on the equipment with no parental guidance. Nothing was said to them. I get the feeling if you ain’t in their click, your not welcome. This place needs new management. I wouldn’t recommend it to any one or any family.

If I could give no stars I would. We bought a membership and took out children to the pool. We were only allowed to use 1 lane while others used most of the pool. My son walked on the concrete which the first lifeguard said was fine. When the second lifeguard showed up he walked on the concrete like he had be doing and the second lifeguard screamed at him for doing so, making my son feel extremely embarrassed and he started crying. NO ONE should yell at a child but much less to yell at a child who they don’t know. After that I decided to leave the lifeguard approach me telling me we wasn’t allowed to use floats for the children’s safety when and if we came back. No time during our visit did anyone say anything about the floats until after the encounter with my child. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. It’s seems to me if they don’t like you than your irrelevant and treated like your a bother to them.

This is my absolute favorite place to be all the time. I come in and say hi to the friendly life guards whenever I pass by. My favorite life guards name starts with an J, they're so nice to me and always stop me from drowning. 10/10 would drown in front of them again. I wish the swimming pool was a little deeper on the shallow end so I could go fully underwater.
The kindness cafe was kind but only kind of. If you name your cafe with only one trait in mind it should at least fully represent it. The lady up front was bugging, I asked for a latte and she only gave me a little.

The indoor pools are really nice and the water temperature is perfect. When I am lucky enough to reserve a time without hoards of other swimmers, it is wonderful! However, they host a Master's swim group several days a week, many youth swim teams and swim meets, making individual lap swimming challenging. I also have found the lack of mask compliance while loitering around the pool deck to be concerning.

We enjoyed the facility before COVID. It was mostly clean and well maintained. But things changed... and we needed to end our membership.
Good luck cancelling or holding a membership due to covid. I feel like I got the run around after an email, a voicemail, then another phone call directing me to email again and then a response from the membership director. No refund for an unused membership.
Their member page on their website reads as follows:
You may NOT change your membership status via this form. To address membership or time sensitive questions, please CALL the front desk at one of our locations:

This is a beautiful and well-maintained facility with wonderful staff. I feel lucky to live close by; I would never consider going to another gym. It is also affordable.
It's disappointing to see all the 1-star attack jobs here, and I have to wonder if they are engineered by the most expensive gym in town that was quite unhappy to see this facility open—and even actively tried to stop it.
The Y has done more than any other facility would to care for its environment and the nearby wildlife.

Brooks Family YMCA attempted to charge me for $108 during Covid, roughly half a year after my membership had expired. Attempts to contact them have failed. My emails have been ignored. I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that it’s simply gross negligence on their part, and not a genuine attempt to steal from former customers. Regardless, I’d recommend not giving them your business.

The facility is very nice. Always clean. Staff is friendly.
The pool area is nice and big but the general family pool is small. It doesnt go deeper than 3.6 ft. Also if they had put sky lights in the ceiling that would of helped give sunlight and not appear like swimming in a large cave.
Anyway my chief complaint is communication. When we first signed up as members, you would think they would give general info such as this is what's in your membership that you can do. This is what he can do as a kid and this is what you both can do together or some sort of information explaining the membership but nothing was given and I had to ask several different times and all I got was like 3 or 4 word answers. I mean, you got to do better than that.
We were actually going for my 7 year old to have swim lessons. When we were paired with a swim instructor, the instructor never introduced theirselves. There was no communication from the instructor to the parent as to how your child is doing. I had contacted the director to ask them about additional swim classes and would additionial classes be included in the price I've paid already or do I have to pay separately for additional classes. I was blown off in the email to go ask my instructor. I had already asked him first and his response is 'well I'm still fairly new here so I'm not sure' and that is all I got out of him. I think he was a really young guy and very shy so maybe he didn't know how to conversate in an adult fashion. It was like a 15 yr old teaching. Otherwise they do have a very nice gym and basketball court.

USE CAUTION IN THIS FACILITY. My wife & daughter were using the shower to rinse off after the pool and while my wife was trying to wash my 18 month old daughter's hair the bench collapsed and both of them fell to the ground in the shower. No manager in the facility or reachable on the weekend or on Monday after the incident. So sad for a new facility to have this type of workmanship. Both were very lucky they didn't get severely injured or impaled by the screws when if fell.

Amazing facility and staff. Better than the ACAC’s and more cost friendly. Cycle classes are great and I love that it is centered in the park..and I don’t believe that birds are more prone to window strikes than any other office building with large glass walls.

Wonderful place to work out. Competent staff and trainers and great group classes. I too am a bird lover but they do fly into windows and although I bought reflective stickers and devices, it still happens at my house. You all have made your point and I am sure the YMCA will attempt to do what they can, now move on and go after people who let their cats outdoors as cats kill more birds than anything else!

I love how family friendly this place is, employees great you so friendly when you enter the building. I have so many good things to say about this place. We love it.
One of their employees went above and beyond with costumer service. He gave us a little tip to wait for the football event to get the $100 off and to bring a football jersey. We didn’t have one, since we are not football fans. So he willingly let us borrow one of his football jersey. 👍 we are so thankful!
Things that they could work on are the temperature of the pool and more prenatal classes.

Beautiful clean facility. The room where the baby shower we attended was just the right size and perfect to have room to prepare food, eat, and still have the kids running around. The playground above the baseball field was nice and clean and my daughter loved the "rock wall" and slide. Only reason it's not 5 stars is the signage for the restrooms was only right outside them so you had to wander a bit to find them because at first you think it's only offices down the hall.

The new YMCA in cville is an absolute gem. You get access to a good quality facility for a fair price - as a member I have no complaints. Ignore the bougie reviewers who complain about no towel service or smaller facilities, they can go spend 3x as much at ACAC to get their warm towelette and power-walk with a bunch of geriatrics lacking in diversity (read: high dollar old whites only). Also please ignore these bird fanatics leaving 1-star reviews, the YMCA has taken the necessary measures to protect the wildlife that surrounds them, fun fact: birds fly into buildings all over the world on an everyday basis, this is nothing new.

It came to my attention through Facebook that Brooks Family YMCA has very bad environmental record. The building has reflective windows, which leads to frequent bird strikes during bird migration times. Despite numerous attempts by members of community to convince the Brooks Family IMCA to install easily available and inexpensive protection against bird strikes, there is no action on the part of Brooks Family IMCA. Even offer to raise money for installation of bird protection was met with hostility on the part of Brook Family IMCA. The management says the they 'closely monitor' bird situation. How do they do 'close monitoring'? Do they stay outside trying to prevent bird strikes? How such arrogant disrespect for concerned members of community and for migratory birds corresponds to Christian values? How do people who run Brook Family YMCA can be so dismissive of environmental issues and still see themselves as upstanding members of community worth trusting them with education of young people? Ask yourself these questions before you make decision to entrust your son to Brook Family YMCA.

For months now you have done nothing about the dozens of birds that have been dying as they fly into your windows. There are so many easy solutions, but all you've done is ignore the concerns of everyone who has brought up the issue!

So environmentally irresponsible to ignore their impact on the park in which the building is situated. There are simple, inexpensive remedies of which the management has been informed and yet refuses to employ. Poor corporate citizenship has the negative result on birds migrating through. There will be many deaths due to window strikes. Unfortunate and unnecessary.

If you look through this YMCA's reviews, you'll see they respond to positive reviews with a "thank you" but give no reply whatsoever to the many reviews that bring up the migratory birds that are colliding with the windows of this building. Please let us know what you are doing to protect our avian friends that play a vital role in the ecosystem. Not valuing nature is awful, especially in the beautiful state of Virginia.

When you google the YMCA among the first things to pop up are their core values. They list social responsibility, caring for the community around you and respecting every living being. These core values are aimed at the mission to better the community and provide character development for members of said community. I am beyond frustrated with the lack of regard for these core values as the community has repeatedly brought concern for bird window strikes to their attention. I feel that these values point directly to being good stewards of the environment and the community in which they are a part of. The land that the YMCA sits on was generously donated by the city of Charlottesville and with that I think the YMCA has an obligation to uphold the values and beliefs of Charlottesville. The CEO keeps mentioning finances as the reason that nothing has been done to remedy the situation, yet there have been several people and companies that have come forward to help alleviate the financial burden with a go fund me account and donations. These suggestions were met with ignored emails and phone calls. Do better YMCA...remember the principles your company is founded on and uphold them.

Very disappointed in your lack of concern for window strikes by birds. It is not hard to prevent this. You only need to put streamers on the windows. Who wants to workout in a building that kills birds?

You should do something about your windows so birds don't fly into them. Put something in front to distract them from flying into the windows.

Very sad that the YMCA is not taking any actions on the bird strikes. Millions of songbirds are killed by windows every year. It could be as simple as aplying stickers on the windows to stop that. Sadly no action has been taken.

My family and I are members of the Brooks Family YMCA. We are big supporters of a facility that welcomes diversity and helps all members reach their fitness goals! I love that about the Y! I also think you keep your facility clean and your staff is very welcoming and friendly. However, I am extremely disappointed in your lack of concern for McIntire Park’s Flora and Fauna. You have ignored the concerns of many patrons who have contacted you regarding the number of bird strikes which occurred during fall and spring migration. You attempted to resolve the issue by putting up a plastic owl, which does absolutely nothing to deter strikes! Many people attempted to give you advice and window companies reached out to help, but you ignored all emails and phone calls. In addition, you have recently put out rat poison which will further endanger wildlife that come in contact with the dead rodents. Charlottesville City and the public entrusted you with our public park and again, its flora and fauna! I’m so disappointed!

I'm very dissapointed in the Y for allowing their building to continue to kill our local birds. The reflective windows in the back of the building are causing numerous birds to crash and subsequently die from impact. A Hummingbird was the most recent casualty and there will surely be more in the next fall migration. I hope that they will be proactive rather than ignore the issue as has been done in the past.

Such a shame that this organization cares so little for local wildlife. They’ve built right in the heart of a beloved local park, but have shown so little regard for the community by placing poison out for wildlife and using reflective windows that kill our local birds. Charlottesville deserves better than this organization’s continued disregard for our local flora and fauna.
