This is a unique facility that concentrates on stroke and spinal cord injuries. Devon is a tremendous resource in improving one’s condition. The other trainers are also very committed and helpful. Just witnessing the drive of participants keeps driving you. The assistance American Fitness Legion provides for free classes and open gym is remarkable. They truly assist a group that is usually ignored. An agency that truly deserves support.

If you are reading this, chances are that you are deciding whether to check DPI adaptive fitness out.
As a client for 6 years, I can vouch for them and tell you the answer is unequivocally "yes": come in and see the place and meet some people.
Let's be clear: thay are physical trainers here, not physical therapists. There Isn’t a therapy pool or a walking harness attached to the ceiling, but they do have expertise in functional fitness for people with neurological injury. : to do any kind of activity, you need the strength to do it. Leg and core strength and balance to walk, for example.
Following my stroke, after about a year in outpatient therapy, my insurance ran out and I was " graduated" or discharged from rehab. Not wanting me to be without resources. My therapists suggested a couple places for me to check out. Among them was DPI due, in part, to the fact that DPI had has therapy equipment that the hospital didn't even have

Whatever your neurological injury is, they've probably seen and worked with it. Likewise, whatever your goal is, they've probably helped with it. I've seen them help clients with everything from walking to, literally, getting back up on the horse.
One other thing to prepare you for before you come: the owner and head trainer, Devon (de VON) Palermo is a boxing fan and has developed an adaptive boxing program with an eye to becoming the catalyst and leader for bringing adaptive boxing into the paralympics, so don't be surprised by heavy bags hanging from the ceiling. Or by the large poster of rocky marciano hanging on one wall, or the occasional female boxer in a wheelchair dropping by for a workout.
It's also an example of devon's creativity, energy and dedication. all of which he also gives to the clients at DPI.
The gym is well-stocked with equipment, but laid out such that wheelchairs, and clients using walkers or canes can get around easily and safely.( in fact, concern for client safety is a common theme here
I've been training with working with trainer Jane for several years, and am very satisfied. When i atarted with her I had just begun independently walking after my stroke, and we worked on strength and balance. Now at home I walk several miles a day.
This summer I had an unexpected chance to really see benefits of my training:
My brother-in-law has a friend whose family runs a boat rental business in the Adirondacks of new york, and we were invited for a lake vacation this year. We wanted to get out of the DMV heat and he is my son's cool uncle so we all headed up north. There is a mountain that overlooks the lake and it's a tradition to climb the mountain every summer, the folks invited me to join them on this year's hike.we spent about 4 hours making the approximately 500-foot climb up and back downon a rock and root-covered trail. Many of the physical skills that i used on the hike i could relate directly to activities i had been working on with Jane. When we were done. The other members of the hiking group congratulated me on completing the hike, and invited me back next year. I invite you to schedule a tour OnD the DPI website, and i think you'll be as exited about having DPI on your recovery journey as I am.

This gym is amazing! I love coming here. I have hydrocephalous, a neurological disorder. It mainly affects my walking, balance, and coordination. Because of that, my strength is affected. I was referred here by my physical therapist. I love the variety of exercises and love my trainer. I plan on this to be a long time commitment.

I went to DPI because my doctor referred me. Devon helped me get my strength back and manage the pain after the spinal surgery. He’s very good at adapting exercises to my needs and abilities depending on the day, so if other physical therapists didn’t work for you, you have to try Devon!

I was surprised when I heard about DPI adaptive fitness and I was eager to check it out. I have been an occupational therapist for 35 years and I also suffered a stroke at 9 months old resulting in left side hemiparesis. Initially, my interest in finding a place in the community that accentuates people's abilities versus their perceived disabilities spoke to my core belief system. Since I have started attending DPI adaptive fitness my trainer Robby Febo has done a great job of customizing my work outs to fit my specific needs. I have experienced increased confidence and strength in a short period of time. This is a phenomenal gym and I wish I had found this earlier in my life.

You found the right place! My doctor at the National Rehabilitation Hospital referred me to DPI Adaptive Fitness for an incomplete thoracic spinal cord injury. Devon Palermo has given me my life back. DPI is like a family and everyone is so supportive. Put in the hard work with Devon or one of the other terrific trainers, and you will attain seemingly impossible goals. Never give up!

This is a place that can’t be missed. Never before have I felt so welcomed. They really know their stuff. Robby Febo has given me a part of my life back. Having MS for 37 years, I never thought I would be doing squats, climbing machines, and walking again. Devon, Robby, and the entire staff are top notch.

I am posting this on my father's behalf. His review is below:

I am 73 years-old, and I am in reasonably good condition. As many of you know you cannot stop the aging process, BUT you can “exercise” some control over how you age and how fast. For me it has been constantly exercising the great majority of my life and using a trainer. Many people exercise, but few use a trainer. Using a trainer has substantial benefits. The first is the ability to focus on certain deficiencies as you age—balance and muscle tone for example. Second, a structured program with exercises that focus on the above types of issues. And, finally, tracking your aging process to ensure you are doing the right type of exercises in response to your specific needs. I heartily recommend using a trainer to reduce the negative effects of aging. DPI specializes in providing the types of required training discussed above.
A completely satisfied client.

I have been taking trainer-guided physical rehabilitation at DPI for over two years. My trainer’s name is Marquise. On my first day, I came in on a quad cane, which I no longer use (it sits in the back of my closet now.) Sometimes I would “teeter” slightly when arising from the benches. I noticed after a recent session, that I arose with no wavering at all and walked perfectly normally after standing. This is the result of exercises that Marquise guides me through, after planning each exercise for my needs and abilities. And, he has also encouraged me to do more walking in my neighborhood, complemented, of course by my sessions at DPI. This has all been to strengthen my left foot and leg, completely debilitated by a stroke in October of 2018. Also, lately, Marquis has even been setting me up with a tether to “run” – something I never thought I’d do again in this lifetime! It is pure luxury to have a physical rehabilitation course specifically designed for one’s disabilities, and to experience increasing strength as muscles develop and heals. It is the absolute best way to be restored back to full potential. As my husband (who is in it for strengthening) and I wait for our sessions, we have also had the pleasure of getting to know other clients, each one challenged in some unique way, as I am. This has been a huge support, as we each person gradually work his/her muscles in the exact way we need to, supporting one another in the process, because we all seem to be in it together. The trainers have been amazing all the while, never loosing patience or their belief in us. As a result, we have seen several folks come in on wheelchairs and “graduate”, some months later to walk out the door one last time, to resume their lives. Yes, it takes grit and determination, but one step at a time, and at this gym if one has the conviction they will be carefully guided back to restoration with the support of many friends.

I've been working out at DPI since 2019, primarily via one-on-one sessions with Trainer Robby Febo. these sessions have been invaluable, plain and simple!! Robby is easy to talk with and he listens very well. furthermore, when I’ve mentioned an exercise or activity I’d like to attempt, he’ll work with me to either accomplish it or develop a safe but similarly effective alternative. he and DPI are first-rate!
All individual and class sessions are conducted with an eye on safety, and the other eye on providing fun, challenging workouts. all workouts are client-centered, even in the group milieu, exercises are tailored to fit the individual and gently push him/her.

My mom has been going to DPI since earlier this year, and was lucky enough to meet Jane as her personal trainer in the 6-week one-on-one sessions, sponsored by Adaptive Fitness League (AFL). In those 6 weeks, Jane assessed my mom’s condition thoroughly and created customized plans for her to help regain strength after her stroke-related complications and general weakness. Jane has been extremely encouraging throughout and we feel fortunate to have met her. Additionally, the gym has changed my mom’s (and my) life since she started going. Every time, she comes back feeling motivated, positive, and hopeful after working out hard, with the support of encouraging, empathetic trainers at the open gym, which is hosted on Wednesdays and Saturdays (this one is free). I wish more people knew about the gym so they could all benefit from the trainers, classes, and open gym. Thank you for providing such a supportive environment.

There are simply not enough words to accurately describe the level of passion, commitment, dedication, enthusiasm and talent found at DPI Adaptive Fitness. Devon Palermo's level of experience, professionalism, inspiration and motivation lead to his creation of DPI adaptive fitness. As a person living with MS for over 24 years, I am so grateful to receive services through DPI. My weekly in person training sessions with Robby Febo have exceeded my expectations! I feel better and have more confidence. His weekly exercise class for those with MS provides a challenging workout within a supportive community. Devon's virtual classes such as Power Posture and Adaptive Boxing sponsored by the Sabrina Cohen Foundation provide even more weekly challenges. Family members from another state have recently joined in on these classes, inspiring them to embark on a daily exercise routine! I wholeheartedly recommend DPI adaptive fitness for anyone searching for inspiration, motivation, support, and challenging workouts to enhance overall health and happiness.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have a gym like DPI and a trainer like Devon guide me in my fitness goals. Having someone who truly understands adaptive fitness and spinal cord injuries gives me such relief especially when I was pregnant and now trying to overcome a shoulder issue. The knowledge and passion is seen in each and every class or training session provided. I feel pushed and motivated. What an incredible resource and gem this gym is in the DMV! THANK YOU!

Working out on Monday evening with my MS
Friends was the best. We all have different symptoms of MS but Devon and Robby gave us all exercises to help us. If you couldn't do it they adapted it so you could.
I came away feeling better physically and about myself.
Hoping now we can go back to meeting in person. Virtual just isn't the same.

I've been working out 4-6 times a week w/ Devon, Robby, Marquis and other staff for 9 months of this pandemic. As a power wheelchair rider it's difficult to find a FITNESS program. I need a GYM to maintain good health not PT& OT rehabilitation altho' the professionals associated w/ this adaptive fitness gym can offer that, too, as they are PTs or soon to be licensed Pls. It's also wonderful that these classes can be held via zoom. One less car trip to make. See you at DPI Adaptive Fitness!

In the fall of 2018 I ran into a friend that I knew from a past MS support group. She told me about an exercise class that she was attending specifically for MS patients on Monday evenings. Even though the class was a bit farther than I would ordinarily drive during rush hour I decided to give it a try, particularly because the class is free. And I sure could use some exercise! I have MS and I had back surgery in March 2018. At that time I was going to physical therapy twice a week and had hit a plateau. I decided to give this class a try.

Keep Moving With Emily is a wonderful class with a fantastic instructor. Emily knows what she’s doing. Since DPI also has other classes I decided to sign up for the Balance and Core class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. (There is a charge for these classes.) Devon Palermo is our instructor. He and his staff are experts about how to work with clients with the challenges that we have. Every one of the staff is well training and cares so much about each and every participant. We get some tough workouts but never more than we can safely do.

I am so grateful that my friend told me about DPI. I enjoy the workouts, the music, and especially the staff. The gym is clean and well maintained. Always a pleasure to go there; it’s fun! I’ve made much needed progress and hope to continue to improve. I’m signed up for months in the future!

Following an anoxic brain injury and 1.5 years of intense Physical Therapy, I had the extremely good fortune of finding my way to DPI. Devon and his team are caring, knowledgeable, inspirational trainers. They don’t make promises about your recovery that they can’t keep, but they do push you to achieve your highest level of recovery. When I consider the progress I have made on their watch, first I am stunned, and second I am so incredibly thankful that DPI is a part of my team.

I have never followed an exercise program. After several failed workout attempts at my local gyms l feared my fitness goals were unrealistic. Everything changed when I met Devon at the 2015 abilities Expo where I tried an Adaptive Boxing Fitness class which I loved. After speaking with Devon I realized my disability wouldn't be a barrier anymore. I started attending Devon Palermo’s, Adaptive Boxing Fitness and Open Gym classes sponsored by the MedStar-National Rehabilitation Hospital in December 2015 and never stopped. In fact, I was so excited about my progress that in July of 2016 I started working with Robby my Adaptive Fitness trainer. He challenges me to work hard and I continue to see positive results.
