I have always hated strength training the way a happy home hates a rabid skunk. And yet I know I need to do it to reach my longevity goals. I have tried various fitness apps, online trainers, in-person trainers, nothing has stuck. Until now. Working with Kayla at Foundation Fitness has been a revelation. She is an excellent judge of when to push me to keep things interesting, and when to back off when I need a break. The gym is uncrowded, a couple other clients and trainers at most in any given session, enough to feel sociable but not oppressive. My wife has started doing joint sessions with me and Kayla does an excellent job keeping us both engaged and making progress. It looks like we might have found our way to a healthy active lifestyle with Foundation Fitness. Better than a rabid skunk, five stars, no notes.

My 20 yr old son and I have been training twice a week at Foundation in Fairfax for about 18 months and I am in so much better shape today (he is too, but he can write his own review). Despite a 40 year age difference, and all of my service related ailments, our trainers have done a great job of tailoring each workout to where we’re each challenged appropriately. Our first trainer, Gage, did a great job finding the right tone with my son, I was just happy to be told what to do and how to do it. In my decades of soccer, triathlons, and military PT, I had never done a squat or a deadlift! Recent trainer transition was flawless and Kayla has brought her own spin to motivating and challenging us. We are at the great point now where there’s a need to work out. I can see improvements in my mobility and strength and hopefully we’re teaching a young man some good habits. Thanks Foundation Fairfax team!

Signing up was seamless, and I really appreciated the initial assessment to gauge my skills before being matched with a trainer. I absolutely love working with Kayla — she listened to my goals and built a plan to help me reach them. I’m already seeing results! We do regular check-ins to track my progress, which keeps me motivated. The gym itself is clean, well-equipped, and has such a welcoming atmosphere. All of the trainers are friendly, and it truly makes working out something I look forward to!

Kayla is truly an amazing personal fitness trainer and such a wonderful person overall! From day one, she’s been so supportive and understanding of my fitness goals, and she always pushes me to do my best, in the most encouraging and motivating way.
What I love most is how she makes sure my form is always correct. Thanks to her attention to detail, I can really feel the right muscles being activated, which has made a huge difference in my progress. She’s incredibly knowledgeable about the female body, which is so important to me, and she thoughtfully incorporates workouts that not only help strengthen my body but also support my weight loss goals. Kayla is also super adaptable. If I can’t do a specific exercise, she always finds an effective alternative. It never feels like I’m missing out, and I always leave our sessions feeling stronger and more confident.
Beyond being a fantastic trainer, Kayla is just a lovely person to talk to. I genuinely enjoy our conversations. She’s so friendly, open, and easy to connect with. It’s not just about working out; it’s about having someone who truly understands and supports your journey, both physically and mentally.

Last May I signed up for personal training as a last resort to try and get myself into shape for my wedding in October. Little did I know that it would change my life in more ways than I imagined.
The community of people you get to know, laugh with, share ideas, and just talk about anything with is incredible. Everyone is always smiling, and sweating haha.
The trainers, are each amazing on their own. You have your trainer, but the others also become family. They all genuinely care about you and your health, mental and physical. My trainer, Jason C., is exactly what I needed and then some. He pushes you, doesn’t take excuses, but is also so kind hearted, and will never force you to do anything he doesn’t believe you are capable of, or that he isn’t willing to do himself. I have a lot of leg issues and that came with a boatload of fear over the years. Jason would always ask, is it pain or fear, and he would help me push past my fear, even if that meant literally leaning on his arm lol.
He was also there for me every time I had a bad day, and trust me, there were plenty. He is the big buff teddy bear who saves baby birds (true statement - he has saved so many!) Jason always claimed that he would make me stronger. Weight-loss is really on the individual and he does a great job explaining that and will help you get there if thats your main goal. I am way stronger today than when I started. Never in a million years did I think this 5 ft girlie would be dead lifting 115.
Thank you so much Jason, and the Fairfax Foundation Fitness team, for everything over the last year.
I may be taking a pause, but I will be back one day ♥️

Best personal training in the DMV area!
I’ve been training with my personal trainer, Jozeph Kaddissi, for about 8 months now. Signing up for the personal training was the best decision I’ve made for myself and my fitness goals.
Jozeph is an excellent trainer, extremely knowledgeable in training, nutrients, meal prep recipes, and really motivate you so you can be stronger physically and mentally.
He goes above and beyond to answer any of my questions, concerns, and train to tailor my specific fitness goals.
I could not be any happier with my fitness results. I’ve lost 23lbs, 8% body fat, dropped visceral fat from 11 to 7 since I’ve been training with Jozeph. I can tell I’m getting stronger, improved endurance, able to lift heavier weights, and it’s always good to know that you have a very supportive trainer.
The Foundation Fitness provides a fun, safe, and family environment where you can come in and have a great workout without being judged or intimidated. I highly recommend this place and Jozeph for anyone who wants to start their fitness journey!

I have been training with Jason for 2 years now. He is an excellent trainer and has been working hard to help me achieve my goals. I have lost weight, I am lifting heavier, and I can't imagine my week without my sessions with him. The other trainers at Fairfax are great as well, all are personable and friendly, and are super supportive. Going to Foundation Fitness absolutely beats a noisy, crowded gym and it has been money well spent.

I can't begin to say how happy I am that I found Foundation Fitness of Fairfax! I'm a 60+yr. old grandmother and started training with them a year ago. My balance and lower body had gotten quite bad and I was losing strength in my legs (to the point I couldn't step up onto the curb w/o pain). In this year, I have learned how my mind, body, fitness and nutrition all work together to make me stronger inside and out. My legs have both gone from below ave. to average in strength, I have lost 13lbs, gained muscles strength, and lost 5% of my body fat. I could go on and on about my Personal Trainer (Jozeph) but in all honesty, I've watched all 3 of the Fairfax trainers with their clients and I'd trust each one with my health and fitness training! Bottom line: They have taken my weaknesses and turned them in to my strengths and I can't wait to see what happens in this coming year!

Foundation Fitness is THE best option for working out in Fairfax. I've been to several gyms in the area, but this is the one where I felt the most heard, supported, and like workouts were specifically tailored to my needs. Every day is a different and unique challenge, and my trainer (Jozeph, who is incredible) is always up for pushing me and having fun while we train. I cannot recommend this place enough!

Top notch experience. Studio has a great location with an excellent staff. I trained with Jason for my first month and then with Jozeph for the last five months. They both helped me achieve my goal to shake off a post pandemic slump. I have been training with Michael Labs at Foundation Fitness in Fairfax for the past six months and find him to be very knowledgeable and passionate about personal training. Michael is very personable and has an excellent ability to communicate and easily assess individual abilities and goals. Michael developed a one-on-one program that matched my abilities and carefully documented my progress with an eye toward making each session challenging and fun.
I have decided to take a break from personal training but Michael graciously and generously offered to share his training expertise with me by suggesting an at-home program to closely mimic my fitness program at Fairfax Fitness that I will be able to maintain with my limited amount of exercise equipment.

I started working out at Foundation Fitness in Jan 2022 with Jason O. then Michael L. shortly thereafter. I’ve been an athlete my whole life but never done anything personally tailored to me and my individual goals. Working with Michael these past 6 months has been great and really improved my strength and overall fitness level. Why my goal wasn’t necessarily weight loss, my physique has changed dramatically! The scale has stayed roughly the same because of the lean muscle mass I’ve put on but I’ve lost inches all over my body so I’ll consider that a win. Michael was great to train with and I always looked forward to my workouts - not only is he knowledgeable about fitness and strength training, he is one of the easiest people to talk with! It felt more like I was chatting with a training partner than getting personalized coaching and I mean that in the best way possible! The only reason I’m leaving is because I’m moving out of state and I’m sad to no longer be working out there. I’d give this studio 10 stars if I could.

This review is long overdue. I discovered Foundation Fitness accidentally because it is near my office, and I’m so glad I did. The owner (Patrick) took time to meet with me for the initial appointment and to make sure my trainer would be a good fit. I’ve trained with Jason C. since May 2022 and have seen noticeable results, even though I haven’t been great at fitting in workouts on my own time. Jason tailors workouts to my own changing goals and limitations. He’s also very knowledgeable about alternative fitness/leisure activities, such as local hidden-gem hiking trails.

I knew this gym was going to be the best the second I was sat down with the owner Patrick and given a straight forward one page contract, no tricks, just a commitment that anyone could understand. It was a hefty investment but the best investment i have ever made in my life. I love training with Michael and have been for several months now.
Misinformation and inexperience is the reason I signed up, those are the reasons people don't like the gym, luckily the trainers are here to guide you. The truth is going to the gym is wonderful for your body regardless of age and the whole thing is good science just like a lot of other things in life.
The trainers here at the gym, they don't just motivate you, they teach you how to be independent, work with you to reach your goals, and truly educate you to empower you.
All the trainers are great relatable people who understand what it's like to be new and don't push you at a rate but rather challenge you within great and healthy reason.
Doesn't matter whether you train with Michael, Hannah, or Jason they'll all steer you into having a productive fun and great workout that'll have you feeling accomplished. Every time I leave the gym i leave out feeling better than when I entered. Foundation Fitness remains true to its name and will forever be the best gym to me 🤝💪

I have been training here for a few months now. The gym has all the equipment I need and the trainers are very knowledgeable and friendly.
Hannah is my trainer. She has a vast knowledge of strength training and is always answering my questions and teaching me new things. I have lifted prior to starting a program here, but thanks to the great training here I am achieving greater strength gains than ever before and am seeing muscles that I didn’t even know I had.
The trainers are very welcoming and you will feel like a regular. I feel like I am working out with both a coach and a friend. I look forward to seeing how far we can go and to gaining the knowledge I need for a lifetime of strength training and healthy habits.

I started working out at Foundation Fitness towards the end of Summer 2022 and I have nothing but great things to say about this gym and their trainers! I worked with General Manager Jason Corbitt for my first few weeks where we discussed nutrition and goals for weight loss and strength training for my upcoming my wedding. He introduced me with a detailed plan for me and we got right into the workouts. Super nice and professional and has great taste in music!
Having to change time slots, I now work with Hannah who is my current trainer and she's amazing! She's very knowledgeable about nutrition and strength training - I'd be so lost without her! Each session starts with a warm up, then into strength training. With Hannah's guide, she makes sure each lift I make is correct in form to prevent any injuries and to make the most out of each workout. Hannah tracks all of my workouts to make sure I meet my lifting goals and with her help, I've gotten past my personal records on all workouts and I'm getting stronger each week! I look forward to working out with Hannah as her positive mindset, care for me as a client makes feel safe while lifting, and our fun convos in between sets makes coming to this gym all the more awesome. I even referred my husband and we now both work with her!

I've been working out at Foundation Fitness of Fairfax for about 8 months, and it's been a terrific experience curated by my trainer Jon. I initially went in to rebuild my fitness level, and regain confidence in the weight room. Jon has pushed me to accomplish all of the above, with a great program, dieting advice, and his philosophy of pain-free fitness. Jon is overwhelmingly accredited, and it shows: not only have I become more fit, I've learned something new every time I've stepped in the door. As a former athlete of over 10 years, I have had many aches, pains, and inefficient learned motor patterns which Jon has helped me not only work through, but made me stronger in those weaker spots. Jon's patience to work through exercises with me, explain them in detail, how they should feel, and his ability to correct issues is astounding. Jon has truly made a difference in my fitness journey!

Working with trainer Jason Ogden (bald Jason) twice a week has been great. He tailors the sessions to your level and goals and keeps you motivated week after week. The sessions have provided me with the right level of accountability to keep me focused. I started working with Foundation Fitness at the end of January 2022. Specifically I have been working with my trainer “bald Jason” - he is fantastic! I lost and kept off a lot of weight 20 years ago, but have struggled with 20-30lbs that I have yo yo’d up and down for 20 years. Done lots of workouts, some crazy diets but haven’t been able to keep it off. I chose foundation fitness because it is a small fitness center and they have a very inclusive approach to wellness= nutrition and workouts combined. I chose the right place.
I continue there because of “Bald Jason” he is incredibly knowledgeable, energetic, accommodating and so so positive! My nature is to be very hard on myself - typical type A who gets frustrated when I don’t see results in anything I do. Somehow he has been able to keep me focused on the long game, change my relationship with myself and food, even get me to workout on my own when I am traveling (never happened before!) I think the key to his success beyond his deep knowledge of nutrition and gaining muscle / losing fat, which is vast, he is incredibly invested in my success. Honestly it took me a couple of months to get the food right, but eventually together we figured that out and because the workouts had been very consistent… it paid off. At 60 yrs young, I lost 20lbs, 5% body fat in the last three months and feel fantastic! I have a little more to go, but I am confident this is a lifestyle change and I will get there and stay there. I would encourage anyone who wants to change how they look and feel to join Foundation Fitness and ask for “Bald Jason” (there are two Jason’s @FF!) It will be worth the time and money invested in yourself! You will also have a lot of fun. The atmosphere with the other trainers and their clients is great as well.

I've really enjoyed working out at Foundation Fitness. The general atmosphere is super friendly and the gym is very clean. As for bald Jason (my trainer) I really appreciate his positivity throughout the workouts which helps you push through the tough lifts. I initially had lingering knee pain from an old sports injury and we worked to strengthen the muscles to help get past that. I also like that Jason keeps it simple and looks to the most effective way to achieve results.

Halfway into my 5th month of training with Bald Jason at Foundation Fitness of Fairfax, here are my thoughts:
FOUNDATION FITNESS (GYM)
I was very impressed with my initial meeting with Pat and immediately knew I wanted to train here. Having talked to a lot of trainers in the area, none of them compares to the depth Foundation Fitness goes into in their initial consultation (background, trainers, short/long term goals, nutrition planning, explanation of the process, fitness journey in its entirety.
• Gym is very clean/sanitary
• Rarely more than 6 people in the gym
• Trainers/clients uses an App to track nutrition together
JASON OGDEN aka BALD JASON (MY TRAINER)
Jason is a godsend. He goes above and beyond on finding ways to stretch/work my teres major pain after surgery. He always has an infectious positive energy; it really makes each session enjoyable.
• Jason’s Motto is “Maximum result with least amount of effort”
• Jason focuses on individual needs
• He provides constant encouragement and motivation through consistent and regular communication
• Heavily focuses on nutrition
• Positive attitude
RESULTS (down 14 lbs in 7 weeks)
Within the first two weeks of diligently tracking my nutrition, I was down 9 lbs. With continuous training and focusing on my nutrition, not only did I lose weight but able to lift more than I ever could!
• More energy
• Better sleep
• Better posture
• Better figure
• Better mood (husband confirms)
• Increased confidence
POSSIBLE SUGGESTIONS
A review is not complete without any constructive feedback. If I can suggest any improvements to make Foundation Fitness even better… hmm
• Encourage clients to take several “before” pictures from different angles to compare with later results. For someone like me who doesn’t like to take selfies, I wish I had before picture to show you the difference training at Foundation Fitness has made.
• Goal Check-In: I gave myself 6 months to build strength, focus on nutrition, lose weight (fat*) but accomplished in 4 months. Re-evaluation goals will be helpful.
CONCLUSION
Personal trainers are not cheap, so it really is an investment, both physically and financially. It’s about accountability; having someone dedicated to you and your success, but in the end, I sincerely believe it is worth it, especially at Foundation Fitness.
• I highly recommend “Bald Jason”, but if he’s unavailable, you really can’t go wrong with any of the trainers at Foundation Fitness.

My only regret coming to Foundation Fitness is that I didn’t start sooner. Due to having RA I experience limited mobility that caused me to begin to lose strength as I wasn’t able to lift heavy objects.
Foundation Fitness let me know that they would work with me to find ways to regain strength. Bald Jason has been incredible in helping me the past five months. I went from limited mobility to being able to lift more than I’ve been able to in years.
From Jason’s modifications in exercises when needed to his flexibility in modifying days when I’m unable to work on what was planned, I can’t recommend Foundation Fitness enough.
As a VA transplant, I truly hit the jackpot as a member of this gym family and being able to be trained by the ever optimistic and knowledgeable Bald Jason!

I joined Foundation Fitness about a year ago with the hopes of getting back into good habits, learn new routines, and gain more confidence lifting so that I could do it on my own in the gym. This past summer, as things started to reopen after the worst of the pandemic, I looked in the mirror and realized I did not look as healthy and in shape as I needed to be. While I could run a few miles with ease, what I really lacked was a strong core and upper body. I have worked with Jon Ces for several months. I have improved strength, balance, flexibility, lost weight and inches. Who could ask for more?? Well there is more. Foundation Fitness is like a family, you feel a great sense of community and we laugh through all our sessions.
Jason runs a great women's bootcamp too! I do this on a drop-in basis. Even though my abilities are not as great as other participants, he meets me where I AM without judgement or pressure. Everything from extending an arm to help me with balance, to my own smaller sized weights, he's on top of it!

I started at Foundation Fitness a little over a year ago. Coming in with both preexisting back and knee problems, I knew it was important to join a place that would take these things into consideration. Right from Day 1, it was obvious that I made the right choice. Jason immediately got me starting on a great nutrition program, that was easy to follow and maintain. The workouts are always interesting and changing while at the same time being safe for both my back and knee. I have been able to make great progress over the last year.
What also makes this place great, is everyone there is supportive in you reaching your goals. Your workout is catered in you reaching whatever goal you have set out for yourself. I cannot recommend Jason or Foundation Fitness enough, joining will help you reach the fitness goal you have always wanted to achieve.

The staff at Foundation Fitness are knowledgable, professional and fun. The facility is clean and I feel safe exercising there during covid given the measures they take to wear masks, sanitize everything being touched, etc. The workouts with Jason were fun (important to me!) and extremely effective. I started personal training with Jon at Foundation Fitness over a year ago now and it’s definitely been one of the best decisions I’ve made. I’ve tried joining other gyms in the past and working out on my own but I always end up losing motivation after a few weeks. However, with a personal trainer, it’s harder to quit as easily when there is someone there to help you achieve your goals and make sure you show up to the gym every time :). Jon customizes each of his client’s workout sessions according to their strengths and weaknesses. He has definitely helped me improve in my weight training and motivates me to stay focused on my fitness goals. He is also flexible with scheduling sessions and offer virtual sessions when needed. I always look forward to my training sessions with Jon because I know I’ll feel good after an energetic workout session. Foundation Fitness of Fairfax is a gem. First and foremost, a big thank you to Jon for training and taking care of me and my wife over the last year. Jon is certainly one of the most experienced and committed trainers around.
In the beginning, Jon did a consulting session with us where he asked us about our health goals and our daily nutrition. He came up with a workout and nutrition plan and explained us how not to do everything at once, but try taking small steps everyday and progress. Now, we have workout sessions thrice a week and Jon makes sure we are constantly challenged and pushed more so that we can achieve our goals. He is reliable, punctual, easy to talk to.
It is a fun place with kind people who really care for your well being. We highly recommend this place. The professionalism and passion for what they do is second to none. Jon is very helpful, extremely accommodating and let's not forget encouraging and motivating, but the best part of all is that he genuinely cares about his clients.

I needed short notice training to pass my Army combat physical test and they were very flexible and willing to help me even though I only had 6 weeks before moving to Ft Bragg. Amazing experience working out at Foundation Fitness! After gaining ~50lbs with my first pregnancy, I was not only looking to lose the baby weight, but I also wanted a lifestyle change. Before I had my daughter, I wasn't working out much, and I didn't want to be a mom who got tired playing with her kids, so I decided to do personal training. I go to Jason (who is awesome), but I've seen the other trainers work, and they're all good. Jason in particular is great because he holds me accountable and he's fun to work out with. Six months in, I've lost all the baby weight and am still losing. I highly recommend them for any body type, but especially for new moms. For a bunch of buff guys, the trainers are very knowledgeable about postpartum strength needs and followed my physical therapist's guidelines (e.g., no ab stuff or jumping/high impact until diastasis and pelvic floor heal) to a T. 10/10!

If you told me I'd enjoy going to the gym after work, I'd tell you you're nuts..but then I'd also be wrong- which is unacceptable. I love coming here! I have been working with Jason to correct my deficiencies and work towards my fitness goals of running and completing triathlons without pain. Ive had chronic IT band and SI joint issues for years. Since coming here and working with a professional 1 on 1, not only have I been pain free, but I've run my fastest 5k in 5 years! They are very accommodating and create a fun, safe environment to train in. I felt comfortable the moment I stepped in there and knew it was the place for me to get the help I needed. Foundation Fitness is a fantastic place to train. I had been doing Orangetheory for over a year and had plateaued on any improvements I was making. After signing up with Kevin and Jason I've seen marked improvements in my body and I'm getting to where I want to be.
The other benefit is that it's become a family affair for us. My wife and my daughter train with me, so it's become a great bonding experience for us all and teaches my daughter how to be more healthy in an engaging way.

I have been training with Jon at Foundation Fitness for over three months. I have never been consistent with exercise or using past gym memberships and I had no idea how to use or lift weights which my doctor had encouraged me to do. I needed to change my behavior and chose to try personal training to try and meet fitness goals. I have no regrets and am happy I took this step.
I was afraid of getting hurt when I began due to having a very weakened "core" from previous major abdominal surgeries. Jon took it slow with me at first because of my fears. After several weeks, Jon earned my trust and then began to push me harder so I could get the results I desired. I came in with virtually no upper body strength. I'm aware of Jon increasing weights and reps with an always varied program of exercise and I am feeling fit, stronger and am more confident.
Prior to training, I suffered from frequent sciatic pain. I have only had one brief episode of this pain since beginning at Foundation Fitness. Jon is very personable, as is Kevin who gave me nutrition instruction. I look forward to our sessions, enjoy our conversations, and am grateful to be learning things that will benefit me and make me feel better and stronger as I get older (I am mid-50s now).

I've been working with Jason at Foundation Fitness for about 5 months and have nothing but good to say. I initially met with Kevin for an evaluation where we discussed my goals, current habits, and some existing injuries. He also had me do a few exercises so he could analyze my movement. Next he worked up a nutrition plan for me to follow and after years of struggling to lose weight, it was a relief to actually be told to consume more calories for once.
I've done most of my training with Jason. He is very encouraging and knows how much he needs to push me without going too far. I'm always surprised when I'm able to complete an exercise I didn't think I could! The workouts are different every time which I appreciate because I get bored doing the same routine all the time. Jason is very knowledgeable and has been able to work around some of my prior injuries without any problems.
It feels like everyone at Foundation Fitness is invested in your success and really want to help you achieve your goals, whatever they may be. They are all friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and supportive. There's no shaming, yelling, or negativity of any sort. I can honestly say that I am currently the strongest I have been in my entire adult life and I owe it all to Foundation Fitness and especially Jason.

I've been seeing Kevin for about a year now. When we started, I could barely do 10 push-ups. Now he has me throwing weights like a professional wrastler. He's worked extensively with me on my eating habits, exercise programs, and keeps me apprised to current events.

After the birth of my first child, I was struggling with not only carrying extra weight, but also adjusting to a new routine of going back to work, raising a family, and finding time to exercise. I was frustrated and self-conscious and felt like I couldn't stick with a workout or diet regime. I found Kevin and Foundation Fitness by searching online and saw that the location was in-between my office and home. I decided to meet and have a consultation, and I'm so grateful I went out of my comfort zone and did this for myself!
Kevin met with me to discuss my goals and did a prelim assessment and sample training session. I was hooked. I began working out with him once a week, and then was able to increase to twice a week. At the same time, we reviewed nutrition and he gave me some goals to hit as far as water, protein and calorie intake- which was easy to follow. At each session he would ask me how the diet was going and would offer suggestions. The workouts are tough- and he has a way of pushing you out of your comfort zone, instilling confidence and strength. I not only experienced weight loss in pounds and inches, but also felt stronger, happier, and more confident. Workouts are always changing and becoming more and more challenging- and I look forward to our sessions- they are a great stress relief and I love the challenge!
Beyond weight loss, I wanted to get healthier- and Kevin has gotten me there. I even got pregnant again and continued our workouts together (with doctor's approval) until just weeks before my delivery. I appreciate Kevin's friendly demeanor combined with his ability to modify workouts (especially with a growing baby belly!) to keep me healthy and challenged- all at the same time.
I would (and do!) recommend Kevin to anyone who is looking to make a change and invest in themselves!

I have been taking the boot camp classes for three years. If Kevin at Foundation Fitness in Old Town Fairfax could help me, he can help anyone. I showed up at the studio at the end of November 2013 with great difficulty in walking and weighing 165, which is 25 pounds more than I do now. I was nearly 70 years old.
At the evaluation, I was able to do half a squat, one push up, and not much more. Sad. In spite of my feebleness, Kevin said that he could help me. So I signed up for physical training and for paying attention to what I ate.
At the first workout session, Kevin said that I could eat 1,361 calories a day. He showed me an app for my iPhone, MyFitnessPal. I started logging in the food diary everything I ate. I began paying attention to what I was eating instead of zoning out with a pint of Ben and Jerry’s Chocolate Cookie Dough ice cream. I began losing weight at the rate of 3.4 pounds per month until I decided that 140 pounds was an ideal weight. Kevin and I finally settled on a calorie consumption of 1800 calories a day for me.
I hurt. I thought that the pain was from atrophied muscles resulting from an hour’s commute to a desk job where I ate lunch at my desk nearly every day and did no physical exercise.
I spite of the pain, I began exercising under Kevin’s direction. I walked across the studio with resistance bands on my ankles, walking on the studio’s treadmill each session, lifting my legs and moving them to the side while wearing resistance bands. In the early spring, Kevin asked me to walk on the treadmill in my apartment complex for 45 minutes each day. Initially I hated every minute--and did what he suggested. Listening to music helped.
I continued working out with him twice a week. In July, Kevin asked me to consult with the chiropractor who has an office in the studio. Kevin asked because I wasn’t getting better even though I had lost weight and had developed muscles in my legs. In October Dr. Farid Mohammadi (the chiropractor) asked me to get X-rays and an MRI of my hip because the pain in my leg had gotten so bad that I had to walk with a cane.
When the X-rays came back, even I could see that I needed to have my right hip replaced. I consulted with two orthopedic surgeons, picked one, and got my right hip replaced just before Christmas in 2014.
The orthopedic surgeon said that the surgery went “fantastical.” The surgery went so well because I had muscles, not flab, to attach to the new hip. I had no pain walking from the day of surgery. I was discharged three days after the surgery. I needed no one to stay with me because I could take care of myself.
During recuperating for the rest of December and all of January, I maintained my pre-surgery weight and paid attention to what I ate. I was able to do the exercises that the physical therapist suggested.
At the beginning of February 2015, I began working out with Kevin again and have continued my twice-a-week workouts plus walking just about every day.
Kevin does push me--that’s what personal trainers do. I am dead-lifting kettle bells from the floor of the studio. The kettle bells weigh 40 pounds. I can squat non-stop for 4 minutes, sometimes carrying a free weight of 25 pounds at my neck, and talk at the same time.
I can grocery-shop and carry groceries to the third floor of a garden apartment by myself. I can change the sheets on my queen-size bed and rotate the mattress by myself. I can stand for 2 hours without pain or having to sit. I can walk around shopping centers.
Best of all, I went to my optometrist about a month ago for my annual check up. I wore my workout pants since I had just worked out with Kevin. The 20- or 30-something women in the doctors’ office wanted to know where I got my workout pants because they said I had “killer legs.” I told them it wasn’t the pants, it was Kevin and the exercise.
