I’ve been training here for several months with both Jubran and Joseph. I travel a lot for work, and they’ve been supportive and flexible with my schedule. It’s been a great experience. Their people are trained professionals who tailor workouts to the needs, goals, and capabilities of individual customers. I’ve known Wayne, the owner of the Old Town location, for over a decade, from when I used to work out the Del Ray location (when it was under different ownership). Wayne is a great guy who’s devoted to his customers and their health and well-being. He’s got a wealth of experience and expertise with personal training. And he’s trained his people well. If you’re looking for a gym that will support your personal health and fitness goals and engage with you on both a professional and personal level, this is the place for you. I’ve had a great experience over the past 2 years with Foundation Fitness and a big reason is the high quality supportive trainers in a small gym environment. I’ve trained with Joseph for the past 6 months. He is very knowledgeable, maintains excellent records of my progress, and takes into account my previous injuries. He adjusts my workouts as needed, while encouraging me to test my limits. Joseph also consistently observes my technique, offering helpful suggestions and corrections. I’ve trained in some capacity with all the trainers, including with Sam for over a year, and all are very knowledgeable and great to work with. Plus FF has been flexible with my work schedule. I definitely see a difference in my strength and fitness. FF offers a positive and supportive atmosphere no matter your fitness level. I highly recommend!

I have been loving going to Foundation Fitness. I have worked out all of my life, but on my accord. That has meant years of yo-yo'ing and injuries because I didnt know what I was doing (two torn meniscus repairs later). In the short time I have been working with Joseph, I have not only been progressively seeing progress... In weight loss, heavier weights and better habits...i also know that I'm building the foundation for healthy strength training for years to come. I initially came to foundation to prep for my upcoming wedding in the fall, but I quickly have seen why clients have been coming here for years. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing my continued progress!

I’ve been absolutely loving my experience here! Joseph has been an outstanding trainer – he’s the first I’ve ever had who truly focuses on proper form and technique during *every* workout. I’ve been training with Wayne at Foundation Fitness for over a decade, and it’s been a consistently great experience. Over the years, I’ve gone through different phases of my life as I’ve aged—shifting goals, changes in energy, and life in general—and Wayne has always adapted the training to meet me where I am. He’s helped me lose nearly 20 pounds recently and, more importantly, stay in shape in a way that’s realistic and sustainable for me. He’s incredibly encouraging, never pushes beyond your limits, but always knows how to challenge you in the right way. Excellent gym with knowledgeable, supportive staff all around. I absolutely love Foundation Fitness! From the moment you walk in, the gym is clean, organized, and has a welcoming atmosphere. I’m over 50 and I find that all ages and fitness levels feel comfortable. There’s no intimidation here, just a supportive environment where you are encouraged to reach your personal best.
What really sets this gym apart is the quality of the trainers. I’ve been doing private one-on-one training sessions, and they’ve made a world of difference especially in my recovery journey after back surgery. I started training with Jubran late last year and it totally changed my life for the better. I’ve never been as strong or as confident in the gym as I am now. He completely shifted my mindset from working out as something I have to do to something I get to do. He knows exactly when I need to level up and when I need to take a step back and focus on form. I’ve been training at Foundation Fitness for 9 months and couldn’t be happier. My trainer is a great guy—he keeps the workouts on track, challenging, and never boring. The number one goal I had when I started working with Jubran was to be strong enough for my daughter - to lift her onto my shoulders, give her piggy back rides, carry her a long way when she needs it, and generally keep up with an exuberant, energetic two (now three) year old. I can now do all of those things. Jubran is an extremely knowledgeable, patient, and encouraging trainer. When I say I don’t think I can do something, he has gently said, what if you can? When he can tell I really can’t, he brings down the pressure and helps me prevent injury. He challenges me to do new things to build my strength in new ways - like my first chin up, which I did last week for the first time in my life. Ten real pushups. Deadlifting 80 pounds. Things I never imagined I could do. I started working at FF for my daughter, but I’ve gained so much for myself too. It is really foundational because gaining this strength and confidence has brought me so much in every part of my life. Jubran (and Wayne!) are also funny, caring guys and it’s a lot of fun to be in the gym with them.

I’ve been training with Jubran for the last few months and it’s been a great experience! Jubran is an awesome trainer- he’s designed a challenging workout program while taking into account my history of past injuries. There’s seriously zero judgement if I have to modify an exercise due to a physical issue. He’s really supportive & great at teaching how to maintain proper technique. I can already see a ton of progress toward my goals and I am way stronger than when I started. You’re in great hands if you train with Jubran. The gym itself is located right in Old Town and is conveniently located to be accessible by car, bus, or metro. It’s a smaller gym but it’s great because you never have to wait for equipment or fight for space like in a big box gym. All the trainers and other patrons are very supportive and it’s a great environment. I can’t recommend it enough.

I started going to Foundation Fitness because I wanted to regain a lot of the strength I'd lost from working from home. I've been going for almost a year, and I now feel almost as strong as I was as an athlete in high school. Jubran is a fantastic and supportive trainer, and all the other trainers here are kind, knowledgeable, and welcoming. If you feel intimidated about finding a good gym like I was, don't be! Foundation Fitness is everything I wanted and more; it's clean, its people are respectful and welcoming, and you can tell they really care about all of their clients.

I have been training at this location for a few months and it has exceeded my expectations! The sign up process was fast and really thorough- there was also emphasis on me learning to be self sufficient, which was refreshing compared to other gyms. Joseph has been awesome in creating a program for me to hit my goals, while also being motivating, answering all my questions, and pushing me out of my comfort zone when I need it. The rest of the team is really friendly and scheduling is easy. Whether you are confident you want to work with a trainer or still deciding, I would highly recommend!

I started with Foundation Fitness (training with Wayne) 8 months ago. After having two kids in the last three years I lost a lot of muscle, and wanted to build my strength. We defined goals (run a short race, do a pull up) together and I have achieved them :-) plus I am getting a booty, which I never thought was possible.
As a working mother I appreciate that they take my lifestyle (which includes travel) into account and are willing to be flexible. I never feel anything but positive energy, and training is consistently a highlight of my week. Plus the music rocks. Would recommend to anyone and everyone, it's an amazing place.

Foundation Fitness of Old Town provides an amazing Personal Training program that meets you wherever you are! The initial consultation was set up very quickly, and I had a great conversation with CJ. He set me up with Jubran, who is very knowledgable and great to work with. He pushes me when he knows I can go harder, but also listens to me when it may be too much and adjusts as needed with no judgement. I am already seeing muscle gain after training for twice a week for two months!

I have been training with Sam consistently for the last year and he is an excellent trainer. It is clear that he is well versed in the area of personal training and he is skilled at creating workouts to help you meet your fitness goals. I would probably be closer to my goals if I would stop eating everything in sight, but that is more of a me issue than a Sam issue. All joking aside, I enjoy working out with Sam and I have seen physical improvements. I am excited to partner with him in 2024 to meet my fitness goals. I would highly recommend him as a trainer.

For the first time ever, I LOVE GOING TO MY GYM and WORKING OUT!!!
From the moment I sent my first email inquiring about their services to this very moment while writing this review, Foundation Fitness has been fantastic in every possible way. As a result, this review would be way to long if I tried to express all of the AMAZING aspects of Foundation Fitness of Old Town, Alexandria. So, I will hit the main points of interest.
Bottom Line Up Front
Foundation Fitness is an excellent choice. The workouts are motivational during the session and inspirational in between visits. Their trainers will meet you where you are and help take you to where you want to be.
Initial Meeting
CJ, the owner himself, has been amazing from the very beginning and did the following in our initial meeting:
1. responded to all of my emails, calls, and questions
2. quickly set up an initial consultation at a convenient time
3. conducted a thorough intake and initial assessment
4. took the time to learn why I wanted to work out and what I saw as my 1-month, 3-month, 6-month, and year-long goals
5. cultivated an understanding of my post-surgical/post-physical therapy needs
5. carefully and thoughtfully worked out a fitness plan to address my concerns after being out of the gym for a year due to an extensive surgery and slow-healing injuries
Facilities and Trainers
1. The location is convenient.
2. The site and equipment is extremely clean.
3. The atmosphere is positive and motivating.
4. The trainers are kind, personable, professional, encouraging, and exceptionally knowledgable.
My Experience
Physically: Before starting at Foundation Fitness, I had spent a year healing from a tricky injury and recovering from an extensive surgery. As a result, I was extremely concerned about having workouts that are safely crafted to promote healing but also challenging enough to get me back to feeling like the pre-injury me. Not only has Foundation Fitness successfully addressed my concerns, but I am now starting to feel even stronger than the pre-injured me because my trainer is taking the time to teach me what correct exercise form is, how to avoid injury, and functional ways to use my workouts in every day life.
Mentally: I have ADHD so working out is extremely important for me cognitively. While I recognize it is important, I also know my ADHD makes working out tough because I get bored so incredibly fast, HATE repetition of any kind, and require equal parts interest, novelty, and challenge for both my mind and body concurrently.
During my intake, CJ listened to me discuss these reasons as well as my neuro-training requirements for my workouts: my exercise plan needed to include cross-body exercises, resistance training, heavy body exercises with pushing and pulling, exercises with aspects of balance & coordination, and coaching on how to properly breath while physically exerting myself.
CJ listened, did his own research, and does a masterful job including mental and neuro aspects in my exercise plan. While no one else is doing this, every trainer should be. I see positive mental benefits by being able to focus better and sleep deeper.
Conclusion
I have now worked with Foundation Fitness for about 3 months. My routines are tailored just for me, are never repeated, are over quicker than I wished, and are hitting my goals faster than I ever expected or thought possible. Because I never liked working out before, was anxious about starting, and was bored every single time before, this is simply miraculous for me.
Before, I worked out because I had to do so even though I dreaded it. Now - because of Foundation Fitness - I work out because I love it, look forward to it, and can see results from it. Choosing Foundation Fitness as my gym has been the absolute best investment in my physical and mental health this year.

I started working with Foundation Fitness of Old Town Alexandria at the start of 2023. For those of you on the fence about joining, let me say that it will be the best decision you will make for your mental and physical health this year.
Every interaction with Foundation Fitness from start to finish has been great. Patrick, the first team member I worked with, spoke with me for more than 45 minutes during my first consultation. We discussed my fitness goals, reviewed my physical history, and took specific measurements of my current physical state. I came away impressed with Patrick’s skills and passion for physical fitness at any age.
For my first appointment, another team member, CJ, and I spent an hour going through a rigorous practical exam to see which trainer would best match my capabilities and fitness goals. CJ is very experienced and approachable. No matter your initial skill level, he will be considerate, kind, and specific with his questions. His goal is to find any physical limits you have so you can safely work out at the gym, not to push you to the point of damage or injury. I felt completely safe working with him and was highly impressed with his precise methods for determining flexibility, strength, and endurance.
I have worked closely with two trainers, Wayne and Ibrahim. Wayne is a very nice guy, always willing to lend a word of advice or encouragement. I have not trained directly with him, but he is a wonderful person and a great trainer.
Ibrahim, on the other hand, is my direct personal trainer and I cannot praise him enough. He is the best kind of personal trainer, knowledgeable, encouraging, and down-to-earth. He has pushed me to work harder at my physical fitness than I ever have before and the results have been more than I expected.
Every workout with Ibrahim is different; he is careful to ensure no muscle group becomes used to the routine. He is constantly watching me perform the workouts and is quick to provide comments, either to help me improve the workout’s result/safety or compliment my workout form/control. I have never felt he is pushing me into unsafe territory; yet, I always feel he is pushing me. If you are lucky enough to work with Ibrahim, you WILL see results towards your fitness goals. As long as you are willing to pull your weight (and Ibrahim will help you with that too), you cannot find a better trainer to work with than Ibrahim.
I highly recommend Foundation Fitness of Old Town, Alexandria to anyone and everyone. They are flexible to people’s needs, all-encompassing in their approach, and exceptionally well-equipped as a gym. If you want to live healthier, take the plunge and start working with Foundation Fitness. You will not regret it!

Patrick and CJ were responsive and conducted a comprehensive consultation and assessment, wanting to make sure they understood the "why" behind me coming to them. I have been working with Ibrahim (Sam) for a few months now and absolutely love it! He customizes my workouts based on my goals and abilities; pushes me to test my limits when I may be a bit hesitant; and works with me to accommodate my work travel schedule...while holding me accountable to be consistent! I moved to the area about 6 months ago and working with the Foundation Fitness team has really helped me feel connected in a new place. Foundation fitness was the best find. I needed to find something to help gain strength post surgery and physical therapy (ACL), and I’ve been so grateful for Patrick and Sam who are knowledgeable about post PT training and also have a great wholistic focus on fitness and health. My understanding of nutrition has improved immensely. I feel stronger and healthier than I have been in years. The location itself is so convenient for anyone near Old Town, and I love the atmosphere— it’s so focused and motivating yet welcoming. I enjoy training without the distractions or nervousness of an entire gym around me. The other trainers get to know you too, and they all make it an enjoyable time! The trainers are so personable and adapt each session specifically for you, how you’re feeling, how you’re progressing. They are also responsive outside of training when I have questions or am interested in workout ideas. The investment is comparable to others, and so far it has been well worth it. I was looking for a smaller gym space post-pandemic and I found such a wonderful place. Price wise, it was comparable to what I was paying in a big gym for personal training. I reached out just asking for pricing first off and thought I would get the run around and the owner gave me everything I asked for and it was such a surprise! This level of honesty upfront really made my decision to try this place. I was also concerned that a small studio wouldn't have a welcoming feel to it and that I would feel out of place. Each time I came into the studio, my trainer made it a point to introduce me to a new client in the space that they knew I hadn't met yet. Its so nice to walk in each session, say Hi and feel wholly comfortable during a workout. i have worked out with all the trainers at this location but my main trainer is Wayne and he is awesome. He really adjusts each session based on progress I made last time or even just by how I might be feeling that day when I walk in. He pushes me just the right amount, talks me through things and answers all my questions.

Wayne is a great trainer. He is very thorough about movement, safety, and not going too hard too fast. He checks in and modifies workouts as needed. I'm learning basic building blocks of exercises I've been doing wrong for years and can really tell a difference in my work out. I'm really bummed I didn't start training here sooner. The gym is very clean and has all types of equipment to customize workouts.
