Edit - i’ve been a member for almost a year and though there are several issues with this location, the worst is now that I want to cancel my membership (gave my 1 month notice), they’re being absolutely difficult.
I paid a down payment when I first started which I was told, would be applied to the last month when I cancel.
They are still charging my credit card fo the last month and when I ask what happened to the deposit they say it’s applied to the month AFTER my last month.
Which isn’t what I was told initially and why would I need an extra month AFTER MY 1 MONTH NOTICE!
The audacity of the manager at this location is shocking.
No wonder everyone complains about gym memberships.
They scam you as much as possible.
Absolutely won’t return and discourage ppl from enabling these deceitful sales practices.

——————

Most of the machines are a bit worn and have rust around bolts and flat surfaces & several have parts that aren’t stable. See pics and videos.

One major problem is ppl don’t put back weights and they are mostly strewn around the work out area and you waste a lot of time looking for the correct set.

There is free designated parking (the other businesses tow) which is convenient as a few other locations have paid parking.

30 people sitting out in the parking lot since the gym is still locked. No one showed up at work here today. In general it’s one of the most crowded gyms I’ve ever seen. Would recommend going with a different chain of gyms

This gym is a 10/10 for being an excellent gym. Here are some perks:
• free parking ✅
• equipment is functional ✅
• ample variety of equipment ✅
• staff is friendly ✅
• zero threat of harassment ✅
• towel service available (extra $) ✅
• many options for chronic back pain sufferers ✅

After having overlapping memberships at Golds and Vida for a few months, I finally settled on Golds. The only reason it took me so long was because I had to break my old habits. I had been a Vida member since 2018, and I’m a high-fidelity person, but Golds is by far the better option.

I’m being petty and writing this review for events that happened 5 years ago during Covid 2020. The staff during that time got physical with me whenever my mask would slip down during a set. But they were looking out for MY safety, right?…. bunch of clowns. The gym has a cultural problem.

Poszedłem do prywatnego apartamentowca z siłownia przecznica dalej. No proble. 20$ i no limit.

I bez chamstwa i arogancji.

I am editing this review (on 8/12/2025) on account of the multiple failures of the AC system that have caused damp/musty conditions in the cycle room (and the large GGX room) due to not replacing some AC units that have repeatedly failed and instead refurbishing them. On multiple occasions, there have been puddles of water on the floors. (As it turns out, Golds only replaced 3 of 5 units before and the AC problems resurfaced as a result when this could have been resolved.) There's no excuse to exercise ever in rooms where temperatures reach 80 degrees or more; it's very unsafe and it causes heat stroke/exhaustion.

Golds Ballston uses a building on the "historic register," so it's imperative to fix the conditions immediately that have caused the damp/musty conditions or else the building will lose its "historic" status and consequently cause financial problems. One major issue is the fact that the windows can't be replaced easily due to only being able to use parts similar to the original construction. (Replacing them with the 3M type would help tremendously.) It's possible that the AC issues were.a ticking time bomb waiting to happen, but again its important to be on top of things and come up with a good maintenance schedule to prevent this from happening.

In 2023 and part of 2024, I had very good experiences at this particular location of Golds Gym, primarily on account of good fitness instructors including Kathy (of Sprint) and Chris (of step). There are other good instructors I've had, but some have left in part due to the ongoing AC issues. It's not good to exercise in afternoons any longer at this location.

I will be open to revising my rating back to the way it was once Golds has fixed the AC issues to a satisfactory level and the AC hasn't had issues for a length of time.

2025 Summer Edit: AC has been on the fritz since the fall of 2024. It was briefly fixed in April for several weeks but is now back to its "normal" status of broken. The main group exercise room is now unusable unless you take an early AM class because its a full sauna, and instructors are now all fighting to use the remaining small group exercise room because its the only area with working AC. The main workout area with cardio equipment and turf space is also intolerable. Worse still, trying to get a straight answer of when, or even if, the AC will be fixed is impossible as management will just point the finger at the landlord (noticeably, the landlord isn't requiring the gym to charge full dues for subpar facilities). Based on all this, I can't recommend this location despite having a nice variety of equipment and classes: the stifling heat is just too much to overcome.

This update is a bit overdue. Golds Gym in Ballston updated their equipment to include dumbbells all in new condition. Thank you for the new equipment.

Love training here.. The gym is nothing fancy, but there are a good number of racks and machines. Dumbbells go up to 150 lbs which is sufficient for most people. The staff is always polite and professional and there is a large parking lot outside the gym. While the gym can get crowded during peak hours, I've never had issues finishing my training session.

There are a couple of things I would like to see updated:
1. a lot of the foam rollers in the stretch area have been super worn out and soft, I know there are few new ones as well, but I would suggest tossing the old ones out and getting new.
2. Would love if the dumbbells go up a litte heavier, up to 180 maybe ?

The gym itself is one of the best weight rooms in the area. It was consistently hard to deal with staff that was not management/owners though, as if normal gym related questions were rocket science. If management sees this: the front desk rep Lauren is one of the only fully competent ones when it comes to policies, procedures, and membership questions. I had 3 other front desk people fumble my simple membership question, explicitly tell me incorrect info, only for her to clearly resolve it on the spot. You all should be hanging onto her as much as you can from a customer service standpoint

The Ballston Golds is in total disrepair. Today, 3 treadmills were broken. After waiting to snag one, the machine was.a complete safety hazard, shutting itself off about 10 minutes into my run. Sadly, this was not an off day - this is a common occurrence.

In over a year, I have never seen this location's locker room rest rooms in functional order.

Despite the crowds, about 1/3 of the gym's ground floor is wasted with the graveyard of a daycare that has been closed since 2020.

The 2nd best gold gym in the area with the first being in Clarendon.

They need a little while longer on the renovations in order to take first place and go up to 5 stars though.

Their chest supported row machine is extremely awkward and there is only 1. They need one with an adjustable leg support and better chest supported row area. They also need lower body machines like seated leg curl and seated leg extension. Their cable area is also very rusted and old.

The parking situation is the best of the three though. No garage no validation. Just park and workout.

Was considering joining, but it felt like I was scammed. The older woman at the front desk wearing platform shoes pressured me into paying for a guest pass, as I didn’t want to take a tour (I was limited on time). After that, a friend of mine arrived and we took the tour anyway, but I was unable to get a refund, despite my friend not paying and despite me taking the tour. This was all after I wasted 5 minutes trying to verify that I lived in the area. (Why waste my time if you’re going to make me pay for a day pass anyway?)

Additionally, when I filled out my information for the guest pass, I specifically did not opt in for marketing texts. Regardless, she took down my phone number anyway, and I immediately started receiving advertising from Gold’s.

Overall, I would never sign up for a membership here because of this experience, and I wouldn’t be surprised if others were similarly turned off by this woman’s negative demeanor.

I have only attended this gym as a class pass goer, so I can’t speak to how it may fare as a member. I would say out of maybe 5-6 classes that I tried to attend, over half simply were not taking place at the class pass listed time. The gym just does not seem to be able to keep an accurate schedule. After every incident, I have to reach out to ClassPass customer service to get the credits reversed. The regional manager says sorry and offers a one week free trial pass that I don’t need. The staff at the front desk don’t know anything about the schedules and can only offer to reach out to the manager. The commuting and then customer service communication wastes about a hour of my life every time. This is a complete disrespect for clients. After yet another class that started 45 minutes earlier than what was listed on the class pass reservation, I won’t be trying my luck anymore.

This gym no longer justifies its rising membership costs. By 6 PM, it’s always overcrowded, with too few machines and not enough space to accommodate everyone. They’ve also lost access to one of the three studios for some reason, even though workout classes are running in both of the remaining ones. Today, while working out quietly in the back of a class, I was asked to leave simply because I wasn’t part of the step class—even though the room is huge, everyone was facing the other way, and I was just doing push-ups with headphones in. This facility needs a remodel and more open spaces. There’s even an unused daycare room that has sat empty for years—why not repurpose it to better serve paying members and improve the overall experience?

This place is ok. For 40 bucks a month.... you get what you pay for. Machines break a lot, treadmills have been working and not broken as much. Still crowded at times even with Covid. No amenities but did I mention 40 bucks a month. It's close to where I live and there is free parking on-site. uPDATE: they updated the gym about a year ago. Newer machines and benches. More stuff. Still not enough plates... Search for them every time and stuff still breaks down. But it's now 3 stars.

The Ballston golds gym location is great, I enjoy starting or ending with the sauna and there is ample warmup space upstairs.
The equipment is mostly old school and is fairly well maintained, can't complain about that.

People are generally kind and the gym environment seems very inclusive. They have 6 power racks downstairs and 4 power racks in the functional strength (turf) area.
Almost always able to get the equipment I need within 5 mins of when I need it no matter how busy it is!

The staff are fine, I haven't interacted a whole lot with them but they give tours and such for new folks.

Today was my 2nd time visiting this particular location. I live in DC, typically go to Golds in DC.

The gym is decent. The equipment is nice. The restroom stalls need to be updated and maintained better.

However, BEWARE OF PREDATORY TOWING. PAY ATTENTION TO THE PARKING SPACES.***

Pulling into the parking lot, I did not realize that literally one side of parking is for Golds and the opposite side is for &Pizza so when I got out of the gym my car was towed.

$150 down the drain!

I’ve seen Golds respond to other complaints stating that you can’t do anything regarding parking. YES you can; Advanced Towing has so many complaints surely the businesses that occupy this space can advocate for better signage and to utilize another company. Signage that is a pole with labels for businesses and parking instructions. It is very easy to miss writings on the ground when spaces are adjacent to each

Golds can also advocate to work with another company. There are HUNDREDS of complaints on ADVANCED TOWING GOGGLE REVIEWS STATING BEING TOWED WITHIN MINUTES!! It’s PREDATORY. PEOPLE ARE BEING TOWED WITHIN 5-10 mins of parking.

HOW MANY COMPLAINTS WILL IT TAKE!!!

Horrible dishonest, unethical. Cancelled in person and was assured it was taken care of. Gold's charged the credit card for three months after. Gary the manager then said it had to be in writing to cancel, despite employee saying it was handled. Gary then let me cancel in person, even though he said it was not a valid way to cancel previously. There is a reason Gold's has an F from the Better Business Bureau. 9/30- Responded to Gold's per their request. Gold's never responded. There is no corporate Gold's office that will respond to abusive practices.

The gym is pretty average, but they keep charging more for their membership, and they haven't added any new equipment. If anything, they removed more of the 2 cable machines. This was my last day, and someone stole the credit cards out of my lockers. I filled out a police report, and they informed me that they have non functioning security cameras. So if they're not spending on equipment or security, I would just go somewhere else.

Gym is nice and staff there can be friendly. Be forewarned, if you move out of town and try and cancel they make you jump through hoops and use a scummy collections center. Any company that makes you “submit in writing”, doesn’t accept email and continues to charge you is a huge red flag. Definitely pay with a pre paid gift card that you can just reload money to / stop paying when you want.

Edit: They continue to call and try and collect money when I cancelled

Update: I have reported Golds Gym and their scummy henchman Aldous & Associates to the State Attorney General. Avoid signing a contract At Golds at all costs. Much better off dealing with a gym that has integrity.

The instructors for workout classes and yoga are great. I’ve only ever had positive experiences with them. However, the gym, locker rooms upstairs, and large rooms where workout classes are held are dirty. The large rooms have dust and hair all over the floor, occasional broken equipment in the corners, and they are often in general disarray. It is hard to believe this gym is ever cleaned. Additionally, the air conditioning has been broken for almost 2 months now. On cool days this isn’t a problem, but hot days leave the inside so hot and muggy it’s often unbearable. The thermostat reads 82 today. These issues are more than inconveniences and make the overall gym experience feel unsafe. The manager told me to just go to a different location and that no refunds on memberships would be given. Do not pay to go here.

Seem to always find a machine or dumb bell even at peak times and if not; the desired spot will soon open up and I can circle back. The members are there to workout and then leave: they are not there to people-watch or dilly-dally in their workout routines. A culture of respect and friendliness prevails both among fellow members and with management. What I like about Gold's Gym Ballston, Virginia, is that the music volume is respectfully lower since the majority of those working out either have their own music or are listening to a podcast.

So Tuesday 10/29, the gym at 5:45am is still locked up. I’ve been coming here for years now and generally have positive experiences regarding everything, but definitely would like to see this resolved going forward. IF I COULD I WOULD GIVE *NO STARS*! ZERO STARS. It’s sad to see but Ballston branch is declining. MONTHLY FEES HAVE INCREASED AND CONTINUE TO DO SO BUT THEY CAN’T EVEN FIX THE GYM ITSELF. Where is the money even going towards?? There hasn’t been any AC in the GGX room for the past TWO WEEKS. Sure there are industrial sized fans and a giant, waste of space, portable AC with a super tiny fan (the whole box itself is big but for WHAT REASON when you see how this thing blows air) but the room still heats up SO MUCH due to the whole wall of windows PLUS the body heat from the class of course! I guess they’re just waiting for someone to PASS OUT! The past two weeks, I can personally say that I have felt like I myself might pass out or throw up because of how HOT it gets during class! Maybe if I do or someone else does pass out then MAYBE they’ll do something about the AC inside the GGX exercise room!!! Lastly, the sound system has been cutting out unexpectedly but, OF COURSE, this branch hasn’t done ANYTHING about it!!!

I sampled this gym with a guest, was not for me, just a more garage feel than I like but to each their own. (Dated equipment with some worn cushions, sort of smelly in that iron way, but probably friendly dudes to lift with) Came back a day later and pulled through a parking spot pick up a pizza and got towed in the 10 minutes I was waiting at 830. I get not wanting people to eat up your parking spaces, but on a Saturday night when you share a lot with a pizza restaurant and you're closed it seems rather predatory. I'll probably delete this review in a day or so, but you guys should reconsider your towing company partnership. That towing company has a 1 star and seems to be tied up in constant lawsuits. I'm sure you get lots of complaints about them that arnt really targeted towards your gym

My 16 year old son recently had a very frustrating experience at Gold’s Gym. First, just about every time he use the sauna, he encounters older men who are naked, which is extremely uncomfortable and concerning, especially since there are no signs or policies addressing this issue, and he is a minor.

Additionally, when I just dropped him off to check in at the front desk wearing his Birkenstocks—something he’s done over 50 times without issue—he was abruptly told he couldn’t enter. There were no signs indicating that Birkenstocks were prohibited, making the situation confusing and inconsistent. Overall, the lack of clear policies and consideration for members significantly impacted his experience.

This is starting to feel like a less welcoming gym day by day, and I don’t really feel comfortable sending my son here anymore.

I received conflicting instructions from different employees on how to stop payments after my 1-year contract ends. Here's a summary of the guidance I received:

1. I was told to request cancellation precisely on the contract's expiration date to avoid auto-renewal.
2. I was advised to request cancellation within 30 days before the contract ends.
3. After following the above, I was then informed that cancellation must be requested more than 30 days prior to the contract end date.
4. The latest instruction was to request cancellation on the contract end date, which would trigger a 30-day notice period, consequently incurring additional biweekly payment obligations during those 30 days.

I was informed that this fourth and most recent instruction came directly from the owner and that it's the same guidance they provided to multiple members. This is not only frustrating; it feels like a scam. After spending too much time on this, I went to the Clarendon location and managed to cancel my membership there within minutes, hassle-free. I then wrote an email about my situation to this Gold's Gym and there was no response. I hope this post will help others who were in a similar situation like myself.

Gold's Gym claims itself to be "The Home of the World's Best Training," yet it seems that doesn't extend to training their staff on basic membership policies. I expect them to fix this by providing clear, consistent information to their members on how to cancel memberships without unnecessary complications or additional fees.

Do Better.

Cheaper than other gyms nearby with nearly everything you'd could ever need to exercise. Management is insanely cheap and will not fix anything.

No staff enforcement of rules, it's a free for all, and we all suffer

Equipment is in bad shape. Benches are so worn out that the adjustment to lay them flat is wallowed out. It's a decline seat or incline, no in-between. There are never enough weight plates and you have to scrounge to find plates. A ton of ellipticals that are never in use. Treadmills with wonky belts. NEVER enough squat racks

Way too many vehicle parking spaces, the gym is surrounded by high rise apartments but I'm dodging cars like it's 1962.

Bike parking is a joke. They installed the cheapest wave rack and gave no effort into properly mounting it. It's very lose. Also the bike parking is in a very tight space. It's horrible, use a car parking space to build a large rack and be done with it.

Mens bathroom is gross, as expected. Pee, hair, smell, etc. I could go on, but i'm sure you can imagine. It needs to be deep cleaned weekly and light cleaned daily. It's currently cleaned monthly

EDIT POST RENOVATION

You’ll never find a gold gym manager cheaper than the dude who runs this place. Mohamed is never around, and runs this place on a razor thin budget.

Bathrooms are revolting, most lockers are broken, urinals out of order for weeks, and so HOT. The sauna has next to no insulation and it makes the entire locker room hot

Nowhere to store the new equipment from the renovation

Barbell clamps bought with the renovation don’t fit the bars, they’re too small

Staff is underpaid and therefore don’t care. Can’t blame em, they work for a cheapo

Massive holes in the drywall from something? Maybe medicine balls? Idk, this place is a joke.

Place is surrounded by bike lanes, tons of people, and metro stops. However, there’s NOWHERE TO PARK MY STUPID BIKE! There’s a ton of vehicle spaces, but it clearly is too difficult for management to understand 10 bike racks replacing a car space means more people get to workout.

Treadmills are god awful, and most will injure you since they’re so worn out

Get a gym membership elsewhere, management sucks.

Good parking. Some new equipment. Have had trouble with treadmills that don't hold the programmed time or that have speed variances. Have reported but they don't seem to get fixed. Patrons move weights and small exercise devices around and they rarely get moved back. Many daytime patrons spend as much time sitting on the equipment on their phones as they do actually lifting. Men's locker room frequently smells like and is almost as hot as the sauna. It is not overpriced though.

Worst experience ever at this gym. The Pilates instructor is so rude and doesn’t make you feel welcome, and if you “aren’t working hard enough” she calls you out. The customer service SUCKS! I would never recommend this gym to anyone. I took a new job out of state and had to cancel my membership and was not made aware of the $104 cancellation fee. Luckily, my bank was able to dispute it and refund me. Worst place ever, the pricier gyms like Lifetime are definitely worth it. Beware of their recruiting deals, there are many hidden fees.

I like Gold’s a lot, having been a member for two decades, but the one in Clarendon, Arlington, has some management rough spots. For instance, when the cleaning woman is in the men’s locker room, the manager stands outside the entrance for 20-30 minutes - at a busy time - like a bouncer at a nightclub, and to get past him you’re faced with the humiliating prospect of having to explain your purpose, including bodily functions. If there were ever some gross offender of propriety, then identify and discipline him. Otherwise, relax and let adults do what they do best - behave like adults.

This Golds Gym location is a waste of parking lot at night and they are certainly working a scam with Advanced Towing Co LLC!

I got towed from the lot within 5mins of parking, while I went to get myself a pizza from &pizza across the lot, in the SAME PLAZA as Gold Gym! Advance Tow then charged me an OVERNIGHT fee… after I walked 10mins down the road to get my car for $200… Advance Towing is a whole other review, and they certainly deserve 0stars and a review from the Arlington County PD!

When I did get my pizza it was cold… Thanks Golds Gym, you don’t need to close a parking lot if you’re not open! Let people park where they want, especially when you’re not even doing business.

Why don’t you pay for my tow..?

Also this is where a DC elected official, punched a worker from the gym. Seems like a toxic location that should just close forever… There is literally two better Golds Gyms 2-5 miles down the road! GO THERE INSTEAD

I’ve been a member at this gym for over a decade. Parking is easy, the gym has a lot of great equipment and plenty of free weights.

There are some negatives-the music is too loud (I have to turn up my headphones more than normal, and they are noise canceling), broken equipment isn’t always fixed promptly, the bench’s near the long wall of dumbbell racks (in the basement) are entirely too close to the dumbbells—it is hard to get the weights you need without disrupting someone working out. This last issue could be fixed by extending the matt further into the open area and pulling the weight bench’s a foot or two back from the dumbbell racks.

Overall I like this gym and the staff I have interacted with. Especially some of the trainers.

I’ve been going to this location for years and have found it solid overall—until now. The staff and class instructors are friendly and helpful, which creates a nice atmosphere.

I was excited to see how the recent remodel would turn out, but am disappointed. They took away roughly 50% of the cardio equipment. While it’s great that they added a couple much-needed squat racks, there is a fair amount of wasted space. I’ve noticed all bikes (outside the spin room) being taken at 7am. So if you’re not interested in the spin class (which is offered 4/5 weekdays at 7am), you’re likely waiting for a bike. There are maybe 15 ellipticals total and at least 2 are broken at any given time. Come January, when the New Years crowds descend, we’ll all be waiting in line for cardio machines or switching gyms. Seems like they could have used more data to make these decisions. If I were them, I would turn the smaller studio room into another room for cardio machines or move some other machines there to make room for more cardio machines in the main room. They keep raising prices to make the place less efficient for members. Another reviewer listed out all the other issues—take a look, Gold’s management!

Dear Gold’s Gym Management,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my deep concern about an incident that occurred at your gym on August 21, 2023, at approximately 1:30 pm. I am a regular member of your gym and have always enjoyed a positive and safe environment during my workouts. However, the incident I am about to describe has left me greatly disturbed and disappointed.

On the aforementioned date and time, while I was in the men’s locker room preparing to change, I noticed another member blatantly taking pictures with their phone. This behavior is not only a violation of privacy but also creates an uncomfortable atmosphere for all the members who use the facilities. I strongly believe that Gold’s Gym should be a place where individuals feel respected and secure while they focus on their fitness goals.

I immediately felt uncomfortable and concerned about the potential misuse of the images taken by this member. It is clear that such actions are completely inappropriate and against the values that Gold’s Gym stands for. I believe that immediate action should be taken to address this issue and prevent any recurrence in the future.

I kindly request that Gold’s Gym management thoroughly investigates this incident and takes appropriate measures to ensure the privacy and safety of all its members. It would be reassuring to know that the gym management takes this matter seriously and is committed to maintaining a respectful and secure environment for everyone.

I look forward to hearing back from you regarding the actions that will be taken to address this issue. Thank you for your attention to this matter and for your dedication to providing a positive gym experience for all members.

DO NOT SIGN UP HERE!

- It's always crowded, so you never get to use any of the equipment you want to use, and a lot of the equipment is worn or outright broken
- They also made it nearly impossible to cancel. I called and went to the gym in person only to be given the runaround. When I sent an email request to cancel, they "lost" the request and stated that my cancellation request was dated 14 days after I initially sent it, despite the fact that I sent proof of my initial request. In addition, when you cancel, you still get charged for an additional 30 days, so I'm still on the hook for an entire extra month.

Their business practices are exploitative and wrong. Do yourself a favor and go to any other gym!

Caught them charging me for training sessions I didn’t ask for. Got the trainer and their manager Denis to ok the refund. The refund never came. Called back EIGHT separate times over the course of two months to try to catch Denis. Either he was busy or he would “call me back in 15 minutes”. A call never came. The trainer advised me to put a stop order so they couldn’t charge me anymore. Now they’re threatening to go to collections even though they owe me way more than I owe them. Posting this desperately hoping I can get their attention here. Denis if you’re reading this, call me back.

Don't feel welcome. I signed up online so I don't have a key tag to be recorded in their system. Even though they have a computer to sign into, it is not linked to the system that records that you are in the facility. You have to wait for a staff member to log you in. You can use the app to record a visit but the password I created online does not work in the app. I had been working with a trainer but because of the difficulty getting recorded in their system, it feels futile every time I go there. I wait around for 15-20 minutes after the time my training session is supposed to start before someone notices me in the lobby and records my name in the system. I tried to cancel my membership but still waiting for them to "approve" that. AND they will continue you to charge you member fees months after you cancel your membership. AND they will completely ignore you when you ask why you are still being charged.

I've belonged to Golds Gym in Arlington since 1997. I've paid my dues consistently all of this time, except during 2020 when my account was on hold. Coming out of the pandemic, I did not return to the gym; I've gotten used to working out at home.

At the beginning of July, I called Golds and asked to cancel my membership. They are making it nearly impossible. Asked for an email, with a reason for a cancelling. I sent the email the same day; it was deleted a week later without being read. I've now been on the phone with customer care for more than 20 minutes. They keep insisting on 30-days advanced notice, requesting additional emails, etc..... After paying them for more than 20 years AND paying without using the gym for the past 12+ months.

Recently, moved to the area so I’ve been checking out a couple gyms. Front desk looked at my license, let me take a tour, and told me they do a free 1 week trial to try out. Came back the next day to lift, but the front desk ( different guy ) told me I had to have a Virginia driver’s license ( honestly he seemed kind of rude the way he was talking to me but whatever). Other gyms let me check out the gym without an in-state license so I was surprised.

That bad experience in conjunction with the sweaty smell left me to take my business elsewhere.

Staff seemed nice ( except for that guy ), a lot of equipment, but only a few racks for compound lifts. Seemed a bit packed too.

If you are looking to be cost effective, this place might be good for you for $40. Otherwise, I would be worried about waiting for a rack or machine.

Pretty big. 2 floors. Top floor with big cardio area and a stretch area. Has a small dumbbell area and a rectangular pullup squat rack station and gymnastic rings. Pullup bars are weird with two bars stacked on top of each other so unable to do muscle ups. Basement is packed tightly with a big number of machines extending the big, long area. Ceiling is low though so can't really do muscle ups there without hitting head on metal bars. A lot of squat racks and smith machines and decline situp areas and bench press areas. Very long dumbbell rack going all the way up to 120 lbs with a lot of benches in front of it. Not the nicest looking gym and not ideal for calisthenics people but gets the job done and is pretty big with lots of stuff to use

The day I finally go I didn’t have a barcode that was suppose to be given to me the day I signed up. Mind you this was suppose to be a contract free membership. So I called Nov.23 and spoke with a young man that told me after me explaining all this what do I want him to do he can only worry about himself which irritated me and lead me to ask what was his name and can he leave my name for someone that can help me. He told me I’m the best you got. Again I asked for his name and he said my name and said yes and he hung up the phone. So walked there with my dog and asked him his name he was at the front desk he said his name was Nelson. I did not like my experience here I will come back later to cancel my membership and my PT. The problem wasn’t what I was paying I wanted them to explain to me y I was being charged and not I have to look into your account and call you back because no one calls back.

I have been a member of the Ballston golds for YEARS. Being one of the highest traffic gyms in the area it’s crazy the fact they have sent emails about increase in price YET weights are still falling apart, dust piles remain on floor from days prior, and paper towels are empty during known peak times.

I rarely see two of the workout class rooms being used so seems like it would be beneficial to use those areas for other use.

They have slowly…very slowly brought new equipment but why the new smith machine doesn’t lower to the ground for hip thirst workouts is a waste. And the new squat rack has “off” levels.

This gym is mainly 22- late 30s (during peak times), however I do not know if they lowered the age but the amount of high school kids working out with about 8 friends taking up machines while they chit chat is crazy and has gotten WORSE to the point I might finally change gyms. It’s honestly very frustrating and you can see the look on peoples faces and comments made. Up the age or have them be with an adult.

I've enjoyed the gym itself-- i.e equipment/etc.

However, the service/cleanliness/etc. is mediocre at best and I've been a member at golds for years strictly due to convenience (honestly just free parking).

The front desk attendants aren't overly rude, but they also are rarely friendly and/or helpful with questions. The gym doesn't seem very well attended to either as paper towels, spray bottles, and hand sanitizers are often empty (I go most mornings and the same ones are empty virtually every day so are clearly never refilled). Golds clearly knows that is is the biggest and has the best location and does not need to provide great service/cleanliness to remain in business.

Additionally, anything administrative is a nightmare. I've had issues with charges, adjusting my plan, etc. and everything is handled by a 1800 number that is EXTREMELY difficult to get through to.

I am moving out of the area and had to cancel my membership and was just on hold for 21 min to simply verbally tell someone in the corporate calling center that I was cancelling, because apparently you aren't able to cancel at the gym itself.

Unfortunately, there just aren't many gyms (outside of niche Orange Theory Fitness-type places) in the area to give Golds the competition in needs to actually provide value to its customers.

This is not a good quality gym and from a corporate level golds facilities do not care about maintaining proper temperature control in their facilities. This was the temperature (84 degrees) in the gym today and this is not new. When you’re trying to do cardio you would be better off going outside since there would at least be fresh air and the same temp. Until it officially becomes warm full-time they will not bother to maintain AC on the warmer days of spring and winter. This is the DMV, random warm days are nothing new but golds has shown they do not care whatsoever about addressing this. I’ve experienced this temperature numerous times at multiple golds locations. The only reason I’m giving three stars is because the instructors here are amazing. However there are also good instructors at other facilities and I have begun looking because allowing it to be 84 degrees so this facility can save money is unacceptable.

Staff have always been friendly. Location is convenient. The place could really use an update. Like a lot of gyms, the equipment is worn, and is an obvious outlier from their other locations. Probably the worst part is that they still use a hyperagressive towing company to enforce parking, even after the state attorney general sued the towing company and won. As a patron who parks there, I appreciate them ensuring gym patrons are the ones using the lot. That's how I'm able to get a spot. As a victim of the agressive towing company in this lot, who towed my car while I was in the gym, they should sever ties with this disgraceful towing company. They'll get a star back when they find another towing company, and two stars back when they update the equipment.

But some of the equipment is a little old and could be replaced (Dumbells or fixed barbells are loose on ends or have plastic coming off on ends. Some of the treadmills wobble or don’t run smoothly). Besides that it’s a good gym!

Love the staff. The staff is always amazing at any location I attend within the Arlington area. The review doesn’t reflect on my interaction with the staff over the years, which are the best assets of each location. I’ve been a golds member for 10 years or so. Overall the Ballston location itself is just okay. Nothing in particular stands out as positive or negative other then it’s close for my daily needs and I usually navigate around the “peak times” to avoid the craze and awful workout smells. With the crazy amount of price increases received since covid started they can and should be able to afford better cleaning or deep cleaning services. Along with the loss of free classes with your membership just doesn’t meet the same cost benefit ratio it used too when I first joined.

They say membership is down 25% and hence why we are receiving our latest increase for 2022, as this is the 4th or 5th price increase in under a 2 year span with 16 day notice of the latest increase. The gym is great for my daily proximity but 2022 may be the year for a change as many competitors within the same area/commute distance are offering better rates with the same or better experience.

Good equipment, spacious and modern amenities but gets crowded and not many members wear a mask.

Good location and good space. But literally everything in the gym could use a little bit more polishing. Don’t be surprised if you find a lump of dusty hair next to your equipment.

Awful experience. Terrible, non-communicative management. Go to the one is Rosslyn.
