Word of advice don’t tell your customers you’re closing at 2 o’clock and then turn the lights off at 1:48. For one you lied to your customers and for two that’s very unsafe to turn lights off in a gym. Not a happy customer today.

I will say I was hesitant to join Gold’s at first because of “gym timidation”. I’ve always worked out at home but grew complacent and..well..lazy.
I walked into Gold’s at Mechanicsville and was given a tour without some high pressure sales tact. I was encouraged to come and meet my goals and not be intimidated. I sucked it up (buttercup) and have really enjoyed the environment (much to my loner surprise). The staff is friendly and helpful, the floor stays clean and free of equipment and yeaaa.. I like it here!

This gym needs new equipment. I’ve been to other gyms with much better/newer equipment. People also like to “hold” a bunch of equipment at once which is hard when there’s 1 machine and it’s being on “hold” by someone who is nowhere to be found. The music sucks. The membership is too expensive and not worth it. They have increased the prices 3 times for “expansion and maintenance.” However, no expansion has happened and maintenance is still an issue.

I really enjoy coming to this gym! The front desk staff are always friendly and welcoming, which makes checking in a breeze. The manager is so sweet and approachable—always willing to help or answer questions. On top of that, the gym is kept very clean and well-maintained, which makes working out here a comfortable experience.

Unverified charges on my account, called to dispute them, they said they needed a few days to investigate… despite having the EXACT times of check in and supposed purchase.

Just a heads up to all other members, check your bank statements; because apparently, employees are having or verifying lean vanilla protein products from the cooler on your dime.

I had a terrible experience with this gym.

My account never worked properly, and despite multiple requests for assistance, the staff did absolutely nothing to fix the issue.

They don't clearly inform you that signing up for a personal trainer involves automatic renewal, and that there's no way to cancel before the contract term ends.

Even if you're unable to continue with the trainer, they keep charging you unless you provide medical documentation (which I'm not even sure is legal).

I definitely would not recommend this place.

Been using this location for years and it has what you need basically. My biggest complaint is the lack of rules enforcement. It seems everybody wants to workout in socks and no shoes these days. The lack of communication when things change is also a problem at this location.

Somehow they are still open even after closing the kid’s center with 3 days notice then increasing membership fees to not letting customers cancel their membership unless they are able to come in during a very limited schedule. After several GMs, it has not gotten better. It’s full of children and adults who love drama, not to mention the remodel is just terrible. This franchise is an overpriced planet fitness

One of the cleanest gyms I have been to hands down! I feel that is saying something, since as a Military veteran I have been to gyms all over the world. The staff is always nice or at least courteous. The manager Danielle even though very busy, always takes time to say hello and they have a variety of equipment for all your training needs. Overall a great gym.

Management lied & told me I could buy just one single month, I was charged for the next 3 months & called for a refund, the workers i spoke with were seemingly incompetent & avoiding every question I was asking, I asked to speak with a manager & they wouldn’t put her on the phone. Extremely poor management & staff. Will NOT be returning!

I highly recommend Mechanicsville Golds !

The two girls at the front desk was being really rude to us especially they have their two guys friends chilling at the desk and making fun of ppl didn't know my boyfriend had to repay his golds payment and they were just laughing and making jokes.

I was gonna sign up again because I had love my golds in the past but probably will attending a different location.

It made me really insecure I would have thought the gym were supposed to lift people up and motivate people not bully people at the front.

I get the point if you wanna hang out with friends while on the job but don't make fun ppl laughing and giggling than rudly say "damn you forgot to pay". The girl in the chair was just grinning the whole time.

Usually I don't make reviews but it was hurtful.

Meets all expectations and then some!
I have to say I had the old school mentality when it comes gyms. I remember when times were different than they are now. When it was bunch of testosterone filled MEAT HEADS slamming weights around in the 80’s and 90’s. It’s NOT like that now. Well not as bad lol! But the environment and vibe I get now at Golds is very welcoming and courteous amongst other members. The staff there is phenomenal except for maybe one bad seed in the bunch but hey nowhere is perfect nowadays. The establishment is cleaned VERY frequently (Thanks Joe) the equipment is up to date, clean, and easily understood. I’ve made great gains in my fitness journey and look forward to every workout. Would highly recommend them.

Have been a member for 7 years now and just recently got an at home gym. I was sent an email saying the prices were going up so I decided it’s time to cancel. If you work or have a busy life don’t bother trying to cancel. Called up there and was told you can only cancel Monday through Friday 10-6pm “when the manager is there.” Also went in on a weekend to cancel and was told the same thing while the manager was sitting in the office. Just a way to scam you of your money. I also used to work as front desk at this golds while in high school and this was never the case. Not to mention you can sign up online but no way to cancel online. Doesn’t make any sense. Also asked if this was in the cancellation policy or membership agreement that I signed and I was told “no, it’s just the owners rules.” What kind of BS show are they running. They’re losing money so they’re trying their best to make it harder for you to cancel. Absolutely disgusting and terrible way to treat your loyal members.

Make sure you get a copy of your cancellation papers if you have to move or cancel for any reason… I went in on May 30th to cancel my membership, I do not work for golds I do not know protocols for cancellation. That is YOUR employees jobs! The gentleman took my key pass and had me sign a paper. I told him I was moving so that’s why I needed to cancel. I just recently got charged for July when I called the manager they said they had no record of this, asked me if I knew the guys name, the date and time I came in… and told me it should of been done on the computer and that I should of taken a picture of the paper I signed… shifting the blame to me! I do not work for golds how was I supposed know the protocol! She told me there was nothing they could do and I had to mail them a letter and until then would keep charging me… only after leaving a bad review did they accommodate me. I did send the letter in the mail. I was a consistent member there for 3 years and this is how I was treated after moving states and needing to cancel. The only reason I’m giving two stars is the nice equipment and the other customers I grew to know. Shout out to miles, Ed, and Ryan!

The gym is in decline from my point of view. Seems like you got to be friends of the alpha team to use the free weights far as bench press or like. The main reason I was going is to bike exercise, is now being limited. I guess you can mainly use the showers still for the most part. Don't like the loud music at times. Don't like any hip hop or rap. If it was kept down so I could turn down my head phones would be a plus. Impossible for me when taking a shower. The membership was canceled for non payment from bank (goody gum drops). I paid the balance ask for day pass. Don't want to restore membership because of distance location. And what I said above.

**UPDATE - Management terminated my membership over this review and BANNED ME from their clubs. Please understand who you are doing business with and beware!**

First let me say that I was a member of this franchise for 8 years. Mechanicsville Gold's USED to be a 5-star gym, one of the best gyms in the franchise with friendly members, great equipment, and awesome benefits including classes and childcare. These qualities STILL exist at the other clubs, but apparently the management in Mechanicsville has lost their minds.

It started a year or two ago when they took away the Cardio Cinema and Cycle Studio to make room for more weight lifting equipment. As someone who used both, it was disappointing but understandable given they were not typically well utilized. But THEN with 1 week's notice, they closed the Kids Club and cancelled the group exercise program. They then renovated these spaces and turned them into giant open rooms filled with only a handful of machines/equipment. Like what an absolute waste of space?? And all of this COULD be forgiven, but the management has treated PAYING members who expressed frustration at these changes like trash. Mind you, the price of the memberships has not decreased with the shrinking list of services/benefits.

Overall, Mechanicsville Gold's is not for you if you have kids, like to take classes, or mainly if you want to be treated with respect by management. 100% do not recommend this gym. The rest of the franchise is NOT the problem. This location is just on a major downhill slide apparently. NO CLUE why anyone would choose to come here instead of the cheaper club that is literally new and across the street?

Looking forward to this comment being deleted or some kind of nasty response from management ✌️

So the owner, Brian, decided to end all kids care at this gym without telling any of the gym members or the employees. We will be canceling our membership immediately. This is the fifth or sixth time that Brian has just terminated his employees without notice and this gym has been on a study decline Since Billy Morgan, the old manager left. The owner Brian doesn’t are about the employees or the members and the gym is poorly ran as well. Lastly this company promotes DEI which is literally discrimination based on their own business model. No thanks.

I don't know were to start. But i have been coming to the gym for 3 years now. And there has been a situation about Daycare and how they are expanding it. I've briefly heard about it. And i have to say that I'm disgusted with those members at the gym, for the way they are treating management. Were is your respect for others? Why is everyone so immature! The things i have witnessed as I come and go out of the gym has been TERRIBLE! You people that have given management hell. SHAME ON YOU! Yes i bring my kids there and when i heard about it. I did not freak out. I tried to find a solution. So I could not hold back anymore , I'm sorry if anyone's offended, but grow up please! I have loved coming to this gym it has been so convenient.

After 4 years, I will be canceling my Golds Mechanicsville membership due to the owner’s hasty decision to terminate our group fitness program, without proper notice, or consideration of how this would impact its members. Golds has also decided to terminate the Kids club with an overall intention to expand an already extensive weightlifting area.
It would be financially viable of Golds to rethink its business strategy and not exclude the group fitness program, but instead keep it alive and put effort into program growth and development. If our voices haven’t been loud enough this week, maybe a quick industry research proving Group Fitness is a viable and worthy program and we have a space in this market:
• Highest Group Membership with ages 20-60 make up 60% of total gym memberships (We fall into this category)
• Gender – 52% are female members
• Group Fitness Programs – 44% of gym members attend group fitness
• Cardio vs Strength Training – 50% of members focus on cardio activities

On Friday, 2/23/24, members of Golds gym have been given short notice that childcare and classes will be removed permanently and replaced with extra equipment. Mothers, fathers, and members of Golds had found this to be their gym family. People with familiar faces that help encourage and uplift one another. We are absolutely heartbroken. I hope the owners know what they are doing. I see this as a poor business move that is destroying a family.

I have been a member of golds Mechanicsville for as long as I can remember. I started with a personal trainer and then started taking the classes. Once I started taking the classes, I knew that this was the gym for me. I am a person that needs a guided work-out. Some members do not, but I do. The classes have been an important part of why I continue to come to the gym period and specifically the Mechanicsville location. The instructors are just the absolute best and I have formed some of the best friendships with people that I take classes with. I received devastating news on Friday that the classes will no longer be available at this location as of March 1st and that is very disappointing. It's bad enough that the cinema room was removed to add more equipment and now the classes are being removed as well? I am not sure why there is a need for so much heavy equipment, but I dont think all members were being thought of when this decision was made. If heavy equipment is something that majority of the members want, that's great, but think about other members that enjoy a guided classroom style work-out and not just personal training. I think there is a compromise that can be made so all parties are happy. If this is the case, then I think I will have to move on and many others will follow.

I live in King William, VA. The cancellation of classes will definitely cause me to cancel and consider other gyms other than Gold’s. I’m a little confused by this decision considering every member who pays for the package that permits unlimited classes are paying regardless of whether they attend weekly in Mechanicsville or not. This seems like a greedy monetary move to me. I’m sorry that’s how we function in today’s society.

Owners are stopping the classes at Gold’s Gym in Mechanicsville. I joined for the classes! I made so many friends. Now … they just want to add more equipment and be inconsiderate for others that do not want to be body builders, or full of muscles. Golds gyms owners are discriminating against us. To me.. it is body shaming. Everyone does not want to bulk up and have muscles. Plus we pay extra for the classes!! We should not have to go to other gold gyms for classes.

Eliminating the group fitness classes and the child care program is beyond wrong! The owner should have the nerve to face the many members that this is negatively impacting. There were many people in tears this morning as we get closer to the last day. We plead that you quickly reconsider and know that these two services are a crucial part of gaining and retaining customers. You will absolutely not gain enough people solely interested in heavy lifting, which you obviously only care about. RVA Iron and other gyms will always compete with Gold's in that arena. Focus on all the people that you are pushing away and change your decision. Man up and show up all day Thursday and have discussions with all impacted. I love all the instructors and people in the classes. Do not take this away from all of us.

UPDATE TO MY REVIEW:
Unfortunately the amazing group classes that I was recommending in my review have been CANCELED! And the Childcare used by our moms and dads is CLOSING! I mentioned that the classes were predominantly attended by women, so, as women get erased from women’s sports on the national level they also get erased from small town gyms. Fortunately, other gyms still have a space for women and female athletes (like ALL other gyms!) I guess we can take our patronage and family memberships elsewhere.
Or I guess we could just get back in the kitchen, that would solve everything.
……………………………………………………………………
Edited to add: I wanted to add that I love how the Mechanicsville Gold’s Is welcoming and inviting to everyone! It’s a great environment for all ages and people. We do have men in the classes, but it’s predominantly women, and I really appreciate how this Gold’s supports and encourages women. Providing the quality classes and excellent childcare shows that they care about us. I noticed that they have a DEI tab on the website, so they are required to be inclusive, but they would be anyway! Seeing women’s sports being erased on the national level, makes me appreciate that women are valued here. We need to encourage female athletes, some of which we have in our classes. We could use some tint on the windows, the afternoon classes get hot! But we truly appreciate that we are a valued part of the gym.

I have belonged to lots of different gyms, and I definitely have a home at the Mechanicsville Gold’s! If you are looking for a gym with excellent classes and instructors, this is it! This is the best gym in Mechanicsville for classes. The instructors are so knowledgeable and helpful. I appreciate all of the instructors, and how they teach us the correct form. I have learned so much in these classes! I’m looking forward to more time in the gym, since my schedule is changing, I already go to the classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The Boot Camp on Wednesday afternoons is incredible. I would love it if they could offer another Boot Camp during the week. But I really appreciate our instructors so much.
The only reason I go to the gym is for the classes, so many of us only come for classes, we don’t do anything else there. It’s such a great option for so many people. These classes have helped me lose weight, get in the best shape of my life, and I am stronger now than I have ever been. Thank you, Mechanicsville Gold’s classes, for changing my life and helping me to be the best version of myself! I always invite others to come to class, and I’m looking forward to adding new classes with my schedule changes. (I have brought my whole family to Gold’s, and we all love it.) Thank you!

I'm so incredibly disappointed and upset that group fitness classes and the Kids club are being done away with so abruptly and with so little notice or concern for their members.
I've been a member for over 2 years and joined solely for group fitness classes and the kids club.
The instructors and members of those classes very quickly became family and a huge support system with my health journey.
The owners have no idea that they are destroying our family unit and pushing gym members away and discrinating against an entire demographic with in the gym- families.
If they knew anything about Mechanicsville its super family oriented. Not having the kids club or group fitness pushes not only women away but families away as well.

I’ve been a member of Gold’s gym for almost 10 years and am saddened to have to now leave a one star review. This is only due to the disregard they have shown for group fitness members. I ONLY participate in the group classes and that is my sole reason for going to the gym. Now that all classes have been permanently canceled at the Mechanicsville location, I will be looking elsewhere. It is not fair to add a 45 minute time to my gym commute (round trip time) for me to go to another location. Why ruin a good thing, Gold’s management/ownership? No one who actually goes to this gym is happy with this decision. So as you sit up there in your comfy, bougie corporate offices, maybe have a thought or two about the people who actually visit your gyms. I’ll certainly be spending my money elsewhere until you do.

On Friday 2/23/24, Group Class Fitness members of Golds gym in Mechanicsville, were notified that our classes have been cancelled as of March 1.

This is my personal experience and review of Golds in Mechanicsville.

If you agree, you have my permission to SHARE.
Please help our voices be heard by leaving a review on Google, yelp and Facebook!

*Some of struggle to not only COME to class but to KEEP coming to class for a variety of reasons.
~And apparently, some of these struggles never crossed the minds of whoever thought it was a good idea to cancel group classes at Golds.~

We’ve already lost the Cardio Cinema and bike room, not to mention the blackout film on the big windows having been removed! HOW is it safe to have classes in a room that reaches a temperature ABOVE the National Standard of 68*? It has gotten up to 89*!

This is not Venice Beach. {There is plenty of room for free weights.}
This is Mechanicsville. Where the majority of class members are women/moms who have their own reasons to be here! Are you trying to eliminate female membership?

We are a tight knit group whose relationships have grown from “instructor/member” to FRIENDS.
Our instructors, turned friends, know personal details of our struggles and overcomings.
We are not just a number in a class to them.

YOU ARE DESTROYING OUR SOCIAL OUTLET!

*Some of us don’t have the privilege to set our own hours and have worked hard to change our entire work schedule to make it to class.

*Some of us have eating disorders.

*Some of us have 100 pounds to lose.

*Some of us have 3 kids to bring in so we can work out. Not to mention the staff in the kids club… I don’t know many people who don’t NEED to work! And their positions were just terminated! How is that right?!

*Some of us need to get in our best physical shape for medical reasons.

*Some of us have diabetes! And breast cancer!

*Some of us NEED these Group Fitness Classes to be CLOSER to us than an additional 20minutes away.

*Some of us NEED childcare so we can attend the gym! Not to mention summer when schools are out!
Coming to the gym might be someone’s only 45min/hour to get a break a decompress without kids!

WHY were we not consulted?

WHY were we only given 5 days notice of this shutdown?

WHY are none of our concerns considered or discussed?

GOLDS GYM OF MECHANICSVILLE, SHAME ON YOU FOR THIS DECISION!

Edit 02/25/24

Golds gym Mechanicsville owners have made a HORRIBLE Decision to replace community driven, hard working, group exercise classes with MORE HEAVY LIFTING equipment. All with one weeks notice- and I hear Kidz Klub is next! So the women and men that prefer to work out with others, lead by AMAZING instructors, in a fun atmosphere are being excluded from this club. The entire facility is catered to bodybuilders and cardio equipment.

This was a wonderful location, and we made great friendships that pushed us to work hard and better ourselves. I have no desire to work out alone on equipment with headphones, so I guess I am forced to take my membership and the rest of my family’s to American Family.

I love the group exercise classes and instructors!! They don’t deserve this either. Really bad decision management. Shame on you for your lack of care for EVERYONE’s ability to maintain their fitness.

*************************************************The group exercise room gets way too hot due to poor air circulation and the sun beaming through the windows. Please tint the glass and add better fans! No one should do step class in 75-89 degrees!!!

I’ve been a loyal Gold’s Gym member for over 8 years. I come almost everyday and it’s solely because of the phenomenal Group Fitness team. The upper management has decided to cancel all group fitness with 1 weeks notice to members. Golds Gym Mechanicsville had something great at the perfect price point between Planet Fitness and Am Fam for what it could offer. Without Group Fitness classes I plan to cancel my membership which will take my family memberships elsewhere too. I don’t see how this decision makes any financial sense for the gym and they certainly didn’t consider their Group Fitness members feedback!

REVIEW UPDATE: A year later Gold’s Gym - Mechanicsville gives its Group Fitness patrons ONE WEEK’S NOTICE of its intent to close the Group Fitness program in order to expand the already prominent weight-lifting space. Please note Group Fitness is AN ADDITIONAL COST to the membership and Gold’s Gym - Mechanicsville never made Group Fitness a priority although each class consisted of regular gym patrons (those with memberships for YEARS) and instructors that always gave 100+% to the program. Gold’s Gym - Mechanicsville put constant pressure on its instructors and members related to class participation and would threaten to pull the class/program from the schedule, despite members PAYING FOR THAT SERVICE! Every class on the schedule had member participation (old and new members participating). I am abundantly disappointed in Gold’s Gym - Mechanicsville management/ownership and am very sad to have to cancel my membership. I am not sure the gym understands the impact this has on the local Group Fitness members. Gold’s Gym - Mechanicsville is going in the WRONG DIRECTION when it comes to offerings when compared to other thriving local fitness clubs.

Gold’s Gym - Mechanicsville continues to focus on everything BUT Group Fitness! No expansion means no change for les mills class gym members. It is only March and the room is TOO HOT! The window tint was taken down and we only have a few fans in the front room. The warmer months will be AWFUL. We joke that we need to wear sunglasses to class, but in all seriousness, something needs to be done to help with sun and heat!

I would like to talk about my recent experience with Gold’s Gym - Mechanicsville.

Brief Version: I loved it, but then they made it absolutely impossible to cancel and management keeps contradicting themselves.

Long Version:
For almost three years I have been in love with this gym, great front desk staff, members are nice, and I had all the equipment I needed. However, due to more advanced training I needed to cancel my membership, it was a hard decision because I genuinely loved the atmosphere at Gold’s. Shout out to the 6-7 AM crew!

However, I did NOT realize how inconvenient that they would make this process. To be fair, I tried to change my payment dates a few months ago and they gave me the runaround because I needed to work with the GM or AGM specifically. This was something I looked past because honestly, I felt like I was the one being the inconvenience. However, canceling my membership was a completely different story. In my signed contract agreement it stated I needed to provide written notice. Not a problem, I went into the gym on a weekday morning to be told that I could only cancel with a Manager, and they have typical office hours. A few days later I went back in on a Saturday because I do not have the ability to visit M-F from 9-5 (due to work restraints). On Saturday, the AGM informed me that it had to be done in person with her or the GM but it could not be done on a weekend because “the system did not allow it” but offered for us to come on a weekday after 6:00 PM. She also stated that in the contact “that has not been changed in over three years” you had to cancel in person within “designated management hours”. Since this was my second time trying to cancel this membership I got a tad frustrated and asked for the GM to contact me next business day. The call never came so I e-mailed the GM directly, forwarding her my signed contract stating that this was me providing a written notice. Her response was to let her know a time we could come in and she would have her AGM there to complete the cancellation “weekends included”. I will be TRYING to cancel my membership again this evening. Wish me luck!

Let me preface this review by saying that being able to cancel your membership is a part of their customer service here at Golds. I see a lot of people saying it is not their fault but in actuality if the process is not done correctly it falls on them. I was told my account was cancelled over a year ago over the phone due to being on medical bedrest (which I had advised I would email doctor verification and was politely told that wouldn't be needed). Come to find out my account was NEVER cancelled, they also upped the membership fee, which I never agreed to, and then still charged me a $60 annual fee. When I called the associate advised the manager wouldn't be in until later that day and he would give me a call, well 3 days later no call and OH I emailed as well with no response. I decided to call on that Saturday and ask if any management would be onsite and was told the assistant manager would be there. I showed up and was advised my account was obviously never cancelled and all I wanted was to cancel and get the annual fee refunded, not the years' worth of charges they had been charging me. I was told the system was down and they couldn't do any cancellations but promised they would cancel my account and call me. I was livid because I wanted physical documentation of proof of cancellation. The manager called me on the following Monday to advise he had cancelled the account but I still did not have any physical documentation of the cancellation. I do not see the charges so I am assuming it was done correctly and the annual fee was never refunded. I pretty much got told that the other associate who originally was supposed to cancel my account was no longer with the company so it was her fault and there was nothing that could be done about it. Make sure you get your proof of cancellation if you intend on cancelling, otherwise it's an absolute mess.

The purpose of my membership is the group classes. I LOVE the classes, but the sun beating in and the heat are becoming unbearable. Please, please put the tint shades up. It has reached over 80 degrees in that room. That is very unsafe. The people who attend these classes want to feel like they matter just as much as the ones out there lifting weights.

Love the Les Mills classes and instructors! My only complaint is the workout room. It's cramped and it's hot. Golds removed the tint from the window and it's early March and already reaching over 80 degrees in that room in the evening .. I cannot imagine how brutally hot it will be this summer. Please fix this! Not only is it hot but it's blinding ..

Great place to workout, meet up with friends and stay in shape or get in shape in Hanover County. I've been going there ever since I was in high school at Lee Davis and they have come a long way. I think its safe to say it's a feat in itself for any business to make it through the covid bout. Recently the gym updated machines and spread out the floor for more room, and a higher quality atmosphere. Aaron is one of the employees there and was more than helpful if you need a name of someone to talk to who's down to earth and professionally composed. 5 stars Gold's 🌟 keep on keeping on 👍

I feel like all the world wants to do is judge me because of how I look . I want to teach dance but I know and understand I will never be allowed to there . But I still work out at Golds I was a member since they opened this location and had problems with staff in the past there’s one trainer who yelled at me before for no reason now when I go in I ignore people and keep my head buried in my phone because I have a lot of dances I am working on .

We’ll let me start by stating I came in September 14th to cancel my membership but that magically didn’t happen because they don’t have my form. The manager Dillion was the one who handled my cancellation. When I called the manager Ashley continued to interrupt me and not listen when I was explaining the events and claimed that it wasn’t possible. If you want them to take your money and steal your information you chose a good gym. I’m filing a complaint with the BBB.

He has been very instrumental in putting together workout schedules and diets for us both. Matt is a great asset to Golds who is very knowledgeable when it comes to helping the customer obtain what they need to succeed in their fitness program. Matt ensures that all goals set are met and that customers return because they enjoy working out not because they feel they have to. P S he is greatly appreciated.

I have enjoyed a very positive relationship with Gold’s Gym in Mechanicsville, Va for years.
My very recent experience was so exceptional I feel compelled to share it.
I contacted the gym to request assistance with a matter, and the young man who assisted me, Bryce, not only resolved the issue but did so in a most professional and efficient way. He was kind, knowledgeable and he obviously did everything necessary for a successful resolution.
Bryce is an example of what is right in our world.

The gym itself is good but the customer experience is not. First and foremost when I signed up I was told it was $30/month and nobody ever mentioned once that there were cheaper options (like the $12/month option). They don't even make the customer aware of the choices and just push the highest priced membership full of things most people do not need.

Then, when the pandemic hit and they has to restrict the time and number of people coming in, I contacted them through their website form when to try to cancel my membership and never heard back, and tried calling but nobody answered during that time either. Though it was my mistake for assuming it would just be cancelled after that, I found out I had been charged for several months since then - so I'm out about $150 for that.

I reached out again through the website contact form at the end of August to avoid getting charged for September and make sure my membership actually got cancelled. The manager, Darius called me and left a voicemail to which I immediately called back and spoke to another employee - Devon. I was told I would be called back the next day after they looked for me original cancellation request but nobody got back to me. Nobody told me anything else, just that they'd cal me back.

Despite my request to cancel again in August, nobody told me I had to come in and fill out forms, leaving me with the impression that they would handle it over the phone whenever they called back. Since I never heard back, I ended up calling myself and another employee told me the manager was not there and I had to come in person to cancel after Labor Day weekend when he'd be back in. Because I had to wait for the holiday weekend to be over, I got charged for yet another month (September), despite having requested cancellation in August. The manager, Darius, refused to refund me for September despite this, when I cancelled in person today. He even made the snark remark that he "could" technically charge me for October too, even though it's still September, however that makes sense. This is how they treat their customers, I will never go back to this gym.

I’ve been a member and patron of multiple Golds Gyms throughout the area, and am a card carrying member of American Family fitness as well. I greatly enjoy the atmosphere, cleanliness, and friendly staff of Golds Gym Mechanicsville and purposely drive 30 mins to this location several times a week when there is an AmFam literally 2 minutes from my house. Just walking in to an entire staff knowing me on a first name basis makes me feel right at home. Their updated equipment, specifically the Multi Jungle cable machine, is one of a kind in the area and is just one example of many of why this is the gym I visit the most, and recommend frequently to friends and colleagues.

Gold's took my account off freeze and charged me 3 months and annual fees without notification
I am a college student who put her account on hold at the behest of the manager, Darius, but was not made aware when the account would come off hold. Covid happened and my card expired, but I was not made aware the account came off freeze. Nor was I notified in any manner (phone, text) that I owed three months worth of membership and annual fees. I remained unaware because I was not told at the time my account would automatically unfreeze after a certain period. I have not been to the gym because of COVID related health risks, but was sent an email from a collections agency. Due to Gold's blatant lack of understanding and disregard to make me aware my account was unfrozen, I have my first ever mark against my bill of credit. Ashley, the General manager of the Golds Gym location refused to offer forgiveness despite these unusual circumstances.

I have been switching between the laburnum and Mechanicsville location for about 5 years now and the Mechanicsville location has been going down hill lately. Over 2 years ago it was ok, but now it always smells like urine and with the new younger female staff not very friendly if you're African American. (But it is Mechanicsville after all). The only reason I continue to attend that location is because it's less crowded than Laburnum. I hope that they work on cleanliness and good customer service with everyone and not just certain types of people.

Unfortunately I cannot recommend this location anymore. My wife and I have been long standing members for over five years now but ever since new management came in this place has gone downhill drastically. The overall appearance is horrific, the staff is unfriendly, and the manager I've seen out of his office maybe once since his employment here. The lack of cleanliness is one thing but the poor staffing is laughable. I've seen over a dozen new faces come and go and all we're about as personable as a rock, no actually I think I've had better conversations with a rock. My wife and I decided to go to a more expensive gym which isn't ideal but if it means a friendly, presentable staff, clean environment, and a manager who actually wants our business then so be it. Goodbye golds gym I hope the owner or at least the area management can alleviate this ongoing problem because it's really starting to reflect poorly on Gold's as a whole.

Under new management, the gym has quickly declined in almost every aspect. The customer service is horrible, the staff is useless with any problem outside of changing billing info, because the manager has made it so only he can deal with accounts, and he rarely will assist you. The gym has also become very dirty and the cleaning staff is non-existent. But to be fair the staff doesn't have the supplies they need most of the time. Several times the gym has run out of hand soap, trash bags, and other cleaning supplies, and the manager seems like he has no idea how to take care of the problem or plan accordingly to make sure these problems don't come up. The old manager, was also very enthusiastic, and always talking to his members, but this new one avoids that and sits in his office most of the time. If it wasn't for the good group of members that have stayed despite the worsening conditions, and certain equipment, I would have left and never recommend this place for any reason. Also, certain equipment has recently disappeared and the staff have no clue what happened to it. Overall, unless you have no other options or have a few buddies that go here, I would never suggest coming here.

Edit: It has been several months now and the gym has gone down in cleanliness and especially customer service. Any sort of criticism of the gym, especially in regards to how it is being run, is met with blocks on social media and all comments being deleted. The manager is still rarely willing to speak to members unless forced into it so social media is the only way to voice concerns. Its like they are trying to hide the fact that the gym has problems instead of actually making an attempt to acknowledge them and fix them

Within the last 5 months, this gym has gone downhill. Dust and dirt engulf the gym while weights have become a tripping hazard because they’re scattered everywhere. The men’s bathroom is absolutely disgusting. Barely is it ever mopped and the toilets stay clogged. Toilet paper rarely gets replaced. They took out an entire row of cybex machines that about 95% of their members use to replace with turf. The front desk staff barely acknowledges you when you come into the door because they are almost always on their phones. Customer service by the manager has also declined drastically. The door to his office is always closed. From all of the other complaints that I have seen from these reviews, nothing has been done to fix the problems.

I have been a member for a year and have really enjoyed my experience at this gym in the past. As the gym is making adjustments, I have found the space to be managed poorly. I was hoping to find room to use a yoga mat but the new area dedicated to Compell fitness program monopolizes the only space that is not a class space or machine area. I found it frustrating that this gym has an abundance of cardio machines that are never full while many members would benifit from free floor space. The Compell corner used to house items such foam rollers, yoga mats, and resistance bands. Now these items are spread throughout the gym and not centrally locates for members to use.
