Gym has been under renovations for two years. Renovations take place during peak hours. Paint fumes often suffocate the gym . Broken equipment stays broken for weeks. Management arbitrarily removes key pieces of equipment without warning and unapologetically. People don't flush the toilet. One toilet is always out of order or full of waste. The gym is next-door to a plasma center, and adjacent to a cannabis dispensary. Parking lot is always crowded and reeks of weed. Parking lot is riddled with potholes that are never repaired. Much as I love this gym, it's not worth it.

Management is constantly changing. The rules are constantly changing. Management dresses like gym teachers with no lanyards or identifying ID. The configuration of equipment is constantly changing. The equipment itself will stay broken for weeks and then disappear. Their Glute Ham Raise bench vanished one day- Manager Landon said Bruce the owner lost it in a bet. Their newest assistant manager "left" employment at another Gold's Gym in the franchise and has brought that same value to this club. Sometimes this manager enforces the rules, but most times they leave their post to work out with their friends- Rules for thee, not for me. The company also does not follow OSHA standards; Three major construction projects have happened since I've been here, and each time it was during peak hours.( I have documented each instance) Management will not replace the floor, instead they have moved equipment around to cover up the holes in the floor. Broken lockers stay broken for months. People workout shirtless and don't wipe down benches. There is a thick layer of dust on everything overhead. I have been hesitant to leave a negative review, But I feel people should be warned. A gym should be a place for fostering mental and physical health, but management hinders the process.. And reading the other reviews? I see I'm not alone in my complaints. Choose wisely

Putting this back up to five stars. Allan is one of the newer staff members at this gym and he does a phenomenal job in keeping things as clean as possible. The bathrooms are all well stocked and spotless. I appreciate management for taking these concerns into account and for replacing several of the broken stair masters with new ones!

Downgrading my review for this gym to three stars. The cleanliness of this gym has taken a dive over the past few months. Out of the three stalls in the male bathroom, two are always clogged with no toilet paper. The toilets also leak regularly. Folks are not re racking weights and I spend a great deal of time looking for the right dumbbells to work out with. I’d like to see improvement in the cleanliness of this gym.

Friendly staff! Landon and Mark are always on top of their game, making sure that the gym is well equipped and folk feel welcome. The gym itself is very well equipped: the owner recently doubled the amount of leg machines available, no excuse to skipping leg day here!

Great gym, awesome equipment. Good crew at front desk. My problem are the members. There is a ton of equipment. But it is scattered everywhere. Nobody picks up after themselves. Alot of people carry their gym bags with them, instead of using the lockers! One member was on the weight machine and her bag was on a treadmill! Or people that hog 2 machines at once! But my biggest complaint is that everyone has their damn cell phone with them! They do one set, then scroll their phone for 10 minutes or so. I can do 3 sets of ten on 3 different machines and they are still on the same machine. I leave my phone in my locker and use a mp3 player to listen to music! Or every bench is taken up because a couple use one to do sets and a second one to sit and bs while they go their workout and give you a dirty look because you ask to use the one they are just sitting on! Great gym, but the majority of the members, SUCK!

Love this gym. They have a rope you can climb. A boxing section upstairs. You can even workout outside. They have a sauna and a kids club. Have fun while you're there!

On 9/21/25 I was driving a 12 hour journey from North Carolina to Ohio. I stopped in to break the trip up and this gym requires to hold your ID along with $20 for a day pass. First two issues, it’s 2025, scan the ID, make yourself a copy and $20? I know it’s a ploy to have people sign up instead of paying the day rate routinely but seriously ? I don’t live in the area, wouldn’t you want an affordable price to offer outsiders a chance to positively speak about your gym?
So back to the point, I forgot to pick up my ID when I left and didn’t realize until Ohio *100% my fault* but i immediately called them for the first time. I got a kid at the front desk that sounded high out of his mind. He couldn’t stop laughing and continued to say he’s “so sorry I lost my ID, I hope you find it man”. I explained to him 3x I didn’t lose it, it’s with your front desk. Eventually I gave up and said I’ll just call later. So I did. The second guy was extremely polite and said he would have him morning crew mail the ID out. Perfect!! Except when I called back on the 25th because I still didn’t have it….. the front desk apologized and promised it would go out today. Okay cool no worries. I called on the 29th and spoke with a female supervisor who said she oversaw the front desk. IT STILL DIDNT GO OUT so she apologized profusely, thanked me for my patience a ton and promised me she would personally get it done. Okay.. no worries. Well now 10/2 rolls around, still no sign of the ID so I call again. This time I get the GM Landon. He finds the ID, said he had no idea this was happening to me and promises he will go put it in the mail, literally as he hangs up. I explained I have a business trip in 3 days and I really need it so I can board the plane. I called back in 15 minutes and he indeed did do that but no overnight or upgraded shipping even after I offered to pay on their behalf for it.
Well the flight day is here. I don’t have my ID and I’m going to miss the flight. I have to explain to work why. It’s embarrassing, frustrating and just stupid. Again I understand it was my job to pick up the ID but once the mistake was made, I was incredibly polite and patient. Why did it take 2 weeks and 5 employees to just drop it in the USPS box OUTSIDE YOUR GYM. Then to not help me out with upgraded shipping when I’m offering to give you money to do so is crazy.
I feel weird leaving a poor review, especially after working at a gym for 7 years but I really hope the staff understands that the little things they ignore for customer service have real life consequences sometimes. It’s not okay that I missed this trip and it didn’t have to happen. Especially for a customer that did everything politely.

The gym itself is nice and has everything you would need. My issue is more with the poor management of cancellations and ending/pausing membership.
Last year I was deployed with the Army National Guard, I provided my orders by email and physical paper to golds to cancel my membership. I was assured my membership would be cancelled and nothing else was needed.
Which at first was true, 4 months into my deployment I was being charged again for a membership. I alerted the manager at the time, the same one who cancelled my membership, and they told me I could not be refunded for those months and they didn’t know I was on deployment. Instead of cancelling my membership they temporarily froze it. For compensation I was told I would receive my annual fee waived. That did not happen, I was charged my annual fee, as well as continuing to receive monthly deductions for my membership.
I cancelled my membership in January after returning from deployment and again cited that as one of my reasons for leaving, I was charged again for ending my membership which I did refuse to pay due to all the other issues I have had and being charged for over a year for a membership that should have been cancelled, and now have been sent to collections to collect the month I did not pay.
I cannot recommend any Gold’s Gym owned by this franchise owner.

This location has more equipment than the other Golds in the area especially plate loaded and leg. My only complaint is people will load up plates and not rerack or leave dumbelss laying around. Start charging members that don't rerack $20 problem solved.

Great facility with lackluster management. Convenient with it being 24 hours however it took me emailing the general manager Landon Church 3 different times to cancel my membership which he conveniently waited until the day after i was charged again. Mind you i initially emailed him over a week in advance and i was advised by the employees at the front desk to not even attempt to cancel it online due to the difficulty. I have now attempted to reach out to the general manager a 5th time to see if its even possible to refund this months payment and have not received a response a single time from him. Employees at the front are amazing, unfortunately when i move back to town i am unlikely to return to this location. It would’ve been much easier had he been kind enough to at least reply to any of my direct emails to him. He’s never in the gym itself so that was my only way to contact him

This location is very convenient for me and I luv that it is 24hrs. But I must say that I wish their staff would stop being security guards and just make sure great customer service is giving. They spend a lot of time watching what I be doing verses making sure they have everything they need to start their shift properly. I come to the gym to heal my body by working out, stretching, using the massage chair, etc. But almost every night it's an issue. Acting like the massage chair password is a secret code to gold is not efficient. I wish that they would monitor the people that come into the gym and leave poop in the toilet. Now that would be doing your job. But further more the management team seems to be great. I hope moving forward the staff will just relax and focus on other things but me!

The gym has so much potential but fails and generally comes short of being great. There's a great functional fitness and turf area and lots of options. However, many machines are always broken or unusable and aren't fixed quickly. It's a mess usually, as people here do not clean up after themselves, most are nice enough, but there's plenty who are rude and in their own world. Staff is always nice at least. Unless you're desperate I'd avoid it.
Update:
None of the machines I've mentioned over two months ago are fixed. And it's not parts, I'm talking about screwing down the seat to bikes or putting batteries in a monitor. You say you're listening, but I'm not sure if you are.

The gym is ok , but they need to control the clients parking better , ppl park where there is no parking spots n make it almost impossible to pull through by the front doors sometimes. A month later, STILL no hand sanitizer. There used to be bottles of it up front, all over the gym at stations, now… I guess to save a couple bucks a week, there is still no hand sanitizer anywhere. Management comments on posts saying that they will look into it. They did nothing tho. People going around sweating on everything and can’t find hand sanitizer anywhere. Just cause Covid is over doesn’t mean germs just disappear yall. Is it possible to get some hand sanitizer back in this place please?

Was a good gym, but lately it's been falling apart. Clips are broken. Treadmills are wobbly or under repair/not working. The lockers in the men's room are in a terrible state, with several doors missing and at least one snapped in half, and several others falling off. They keep adding more machines after some price hikes, but what made this place great was the solid set of free weights, stair steppers and treadmill selections, pull up bars, dip bars, and space. I'd rather see them maintain it better than adding new machines that almost no one touches while leaving the most commonly used ones falling apart. Leaving this in hopes management sees this and begins to address it. Also, please stop crowding the space with stuff people aren't using, update the ez bar and lighter dumbell selection.

I’m a few weeks into my membership and a personal training program and I gotta say I love this place. The vibe is really welcoming and not what you might expect from a big gym, even at peak hours. I’m a kinda flabby mom who often rolls in looking like I didn’t enough sleep and trust me I don’t own a single pair of booty lifting leggings (yet?) but I never feel weird there among the tribe of gym people. The trainers are really nice and accommodating. The little daycare room is really nice and big and the caregiver I met the other day was so nice. You can definitely bring your little one and not worry while you workout. The saunas are great and rarely crowded. I use the showers there because I like to get my money’s worth and not deal with it when I get home, and I will say they could really swap out the shower curtains for some newer ones because they don’t cover the door gaps completely lol I don’t care that much but some people probably would! All in all it’s a great vibe and community feel for a big gym.

I wasn't aware gym equipment was water powered. Who knew barbells and dumbbells ran on water. There's 0 reason to close a gym due to the water issues, rope off the bathrooms, turn off the water fountains and let people continue working out. Ridiculous. I better be getting a partial refund due to this gross money grab.

I filled out a request for a day pass and went to check out the gym. When I get there they said I’m required to leave my ID with them in order to work out there. They said it was for “their security”. What about my security? Also this policy is actually illegal. There’s a very limited scope of businesses that can legally ask to hold your ID and a gym is not one of them. Why should I feel safe leaving my ID with total strangers? I walked out and I’ll never come back.

The cleanliness in this place, specifically in the bathrooms, is disgusting. I think they should put more emphasis on it. I like to train very early in the morning and then take a shower. I think no one has cleaned these showers in a long time…. I only see people at the main entrance using their phones instead of cleaning and trying to make the gym a nice place.

Gym provides a multitude of useful workout machines and several weights, alongside an entire sport dedicated area with turf. Not only is the several variations of each machine to allow you to choose the one you like, but there are also several different areas of the gym you can workout. There is an outside area which is great for when the weather is nice and can provide separation from others if you are still shy about working in the gym. They also provide wipes and Sanrio. At several stations throughout the gym to keep work out equipment clean after usage. Overall this gym is great, the staff are nice, and the community is willing to help new gym goers.

Visited the gym on a day pass from put of town. Starting with the front desk staff, gym was fantastic. Great equipment, plenty of space and natural light, more than enough space, clean and tidy. I specifically chose a weekday after lunch to increase my chances of a slow time of day, so I can't speak to peak times. This is a gem and I look forward to coming back.

I became a member at golds gym laburnum location back in march of 2023 upon asking for a membership I requested the $10 membership because I have SILVER SNEAKERS MEMBERSHIP thru my insurance!! I was told by the rep they didn’t offer their $ 10 membership I had the the option of purchasing the 23.99 monthly and $50 annual...so I did!! June of 2023 one of the rep informed me that I was being overcharged every month I wasn’t supposed to pay a annual!! Sooo I was owed a refund!! I got in touch with the Gm Makala!! The money was supposed to b issued on the debit card in 3 to 5 days!! It’s now going on 8 days and I still haven’t received my refund after several attempts to have Makala help resolve the issue on 6/28 I was told my money was issued but they can’t tell me where it went!! And mind the Gm never said a word to me to help the dispute!! Now I’m out almost $ 200 and nobody can tell me where my money is!!! FOR ALL SILVER SNEAKERS MEMBERS BEWARE THEY ARE OVER CHARGING US!! UPDATE!! Well money still haven’t been returned Makala called me Saturday 7/1/23 and was told my money would b refunded but in cash well it’s 7/5 still waiting left Makala messages on 7/5 still no call from her I called Landon on 7/4 then I was told I would b issued a check but still nothing!! These peoples are really testing my abilities they are just sayin wat ever they got to say to me to keep them off their tales!! They literally stole my money after they lied about wat memberships they offered!! Well I’ve contacted bbb and consumer affairs on them!! If I have to go to the news that’s my next step!! Trust!

The customer service is awful. I went in one time and no one offered to show me the place. They didn’t tell me about none of the amenities or prices for anything. The staff was nonchalant, kind of arrogant from both male and female staff, and the laughing made me feel uncomfortable. The overall look of the gym was like a gym, nothing extravagant stood out besides the rude customer service. A memorable unpleasant experience that I will never forget. I am glad I can get in shape with other options.

6/26/23 Edit: This gym has deteriorated from my review a few months ago.
The gym feels like it’s run by people that don’t workout, or rather learned everything they know from TikTok. The things that are wrong are…. Silly. I can see how many of these things would seem fine to someone that isn’t well versed in gyms or fitness. That’s not something to talk to the management about as I feel that they are doing the best they can. People can’t be good at something if they aren’t capable or weren’t trained properly or are not given adequate tools.
This is only the best gym in Richmond metro because we don’t have any better options. Literally. It’s not great. Big fish, itty bitty pond. That being said, you have to go here if you are serious about your physique. Unfortunately.

That being said, this gym leaves a lot to be desired. It's filthy. There are usually a lot of staff hanging around and behind the desk on their cell phones. There's a distinct quality difference when Clay is around and when he isn't. He seems to be gone now and it's very sad.
There are always used paper towels everywhere. Everything is dirty and dusty from years of not being cleaned.
The compel trainers do not put their weights away. They also do not wipe down the machines. They are always working out and everyone knows who they are and they have the worst form and the worst gym etiquette. Why would anyone clean up behind themselves when the staff doesn't. Stop telling us it's a third party. You work with them. You have them in there. It's your responsibility to control them.
I appreciate the effort to collect unique equipment. Often though, we can tell that the person choosing the equipment isn't an expert. For example; We were all excited to see the standing hip abductor but, it's useless. The weight stack doesn't go high enough for a warm up. There's no point in buying something just to say we have it if nobody who needs it can use it. And it sits unused.
Don't get me started on the cinema. This needs no explanation. You clearly know what I'm talking about.
Furthermore, often times this place feels like a best friend's club with a lot of nepotism and favoritism, rather than a public gym. Perhaps the managers shouldn't be seen hanging out with the staff and clients all the time like they're besties. Perhaps, they should go to another location to be friends. For example; Clay was only seen working out alone and retained professionalism at all times inside the facility.
Can we just have Clay back, please? Pay him whatever it takes. I'm willing to pay more.

Been working out here for the last 8 months & have had an great experience! The staff have been extremely helpful and are very friendly. From assisting me in adjusting my membership for tanning to being incredibly thoughtful in remembering I had a trip planned & asking how it went when I got back, the staff really sets this location apart. They are incredibly kind and very good about staying on top of things within the gym. Will continue working out at this location & recommending it to anyone looking for a great place to work out!

A great gym, plenty of space and really well maintained. My only reason for the two-star review is my interaction with the outsourced trainers, Compel Fitness. After joining the gym, I was called by one of the trainers and invited for a complimentary fitness assessment. I expected there to be a sales pitch at the end for training, but wanted to check it out.
I met with the trainer, went over my goals and motivations in depth. We then went through a short, vigorous workout. Immediately following the workout, they then pitch you on enrolling in training. I told the trainer I needed time to make sure I could afford the training program (no individual training offered) and wanted to sleep on it.
The trainer then used EVERY word I told him about my motivations to leverage me into signing up on the spot. I politely, yet firmly told him I'm not making a decision on the spot. This single interaction turned me off from recommending the Compel Fitness programs to anyone I know. I see the value in the program and the staff was knowledgeable. The sales pitch ruined the experience for me. If a high-pressure sales pitch that uses your emotions in an extremely manipulative way is your thing, go for it. If not, be cautious about it.

This place is BIG. Huge turf area. Plentiful equipment. Separate powerlifting area. Sp many cardio machines. A group exercise room. A 2nd floor. WOW. Mixture of old and brand new equipment but so much variety. Area is a bit sketch and would not go here at late night. But good during the day and normal night hours.

Pricing is great.
Facilities are either good or being improved on the regular.
There’s a ton of stuff to use everywhere even when it’s very busy because the gym is surprisingly large. It’s very unassuming when you look at the front doors but it’s spacious.
Really though for me I just need a couple weights, racks and bars so it’s the “no contract” and decent pricing that make it the one.

Don't know whats happened over the past years or why this place constantly has expansions when no one can even pick up after themselves or has to try to start some sort of problem for people who just want to do their thing. Never have I seen a gym that is filled with predatory men and trainers, who cuss at you for not giving them your time of day, and so many people who just like to linger and have 45 minute conversations while sitting on a single piece of equipment. Spend your money elsewhere.

I used to love this location and was there six days a week, but it became too crowded with niche equipment to work out without being right up in someone's business. Frankly, it got a little gross. Now with the 10-ft. COVID rule, half of those machines are "closed" and unusable, but the place is still super-cramped with equipment that is hardly touched.
If management polled the members, I'm betting they'd find that we want more benches and free weights, another multi-point cable machine, more space between cardio machines, and to get rid of the bulk of the single-use Cybex weight machines that each take up a 5x5 footprint and usually sit empty. Can we get a little room to breathe?

I really liked this gym when I first joined but it went downhill fast. First- the number of people in some of the group classes is insane, especially for popular classes. Second- Communication is terrible. I called to cancel my private training and it took 5 months. I left 13 messages, over the phone and in person and no one ever called me back. I was told that no one was there. When do the trainers work??? Third- Music is way too loud. Fourth-When I did sign up for training I mentioned that I had surgery a year ago and the trainer was very nosey and kept asking me what kind of surgery I had. It was none of his business. Fifth- Trainers spend way too much time talking to each other and texting on their phone. However the female trainers are awesome! Very motivating. Sixth-Do a better job of cleaning. There's always tissue and napkins thrown everywhere

I love Gold's Gym on Laburnum. We are all aware of Covid. I just came back to the gym. Why is it so hard to wear your mask when taking a break. People just randomly walking from upstairs to downstairs without a mask! I am seeing so many people jumping on equipment without wiping it down! It's great with all of the 10ft rule. It means nothing if people are following the rules. Why is Gold's not addressing this matter. Oh! I forgot! It's about the money! Maybe it's time to cancel!

I went today to cancel and just scanned my card, confirmed name and that was it... I did not have to show ID or sign anything! Which left me very baffled as to why my membership couldn't have been cancelled during my first 2 attempts. I called and they said couldn't be done by phone. I came in and they said it was considered after hours and I’d have to return during 9-5. As a 24H gym, more needs to be in place for people that aren't able to make those times. Also while there, there wasn't any staff on the floor cleaning or ensuring members were.

Typical gym,free weights, machines, and more,never have to wait to long for an exercise machine . But the staff needs to learn customer service, they hardly say hello or goodbye even when looking at them as i walk in or out,also notice how rude they are outside gym ie parking lot,especially the personal trainers, seen them act nice but arrogant in the gym but rude and almost hit your car with theres on the way out,also they do not show good examples seen them in meeting eating fried chicken in front of whole gym not setting example, eating fast food in gront of potential client is disrespectful and they should set the example they tell there clients to do. In all if your looking for place to just work out this place is good,but if your looking for personal training bring your own trainer.
Update, customer service has gotten better but some seem like there forced to say hi have a good day, but as for personal trainers, still not up to pair,example a trainer who looked stoned while training his client if thats what you want to call it had head phones in,on his phone,didn't show his client how to do exercise right,and had his client walk within inches of me swinging a heavy kettle bell therefore putting his client in danger. They are there for $,what happened to trainers that would encourage there clients while working out,would workout a little with them,and give there clients full attention, trainers in my day cared about the people not the money. Next time a trainer brings a client in my area were im working out or tskes up the entire middle of the fairway i will not be nice i will very loudly Express my feelings of please stay out of my area other people are trying to workout too,but this is only for aboit jalf the trainers ive seen vant speak about the jhalf.

This place is filthy and most of the equipment is rusted and a great number of the machines have been out of service. Customer service here sucks for lack of a more articulate way to describe it. I was unable to cancel my membership online because it didn't recognize me so I was told on the phone I could only cancel in person Monday thru Friday from 10am until 7pm. I have now been sitting in this lobby since 9:59am watching 5 employees talk and goffing off for the past 27 minutes because I was told sorry we only can perform cancellations starting at 10:30. Ugh, where to start?! Let's start with my very first time entering this location... I was NOT greeted warmly. In fact, I wasn't greeted at all. My husband and I stood at the service desk while a young lady fiddled with her phone charger. I said, "Hi" and she looked up from her stance and said, "Yes?" Both my husband and I knew that she was upset and irritated that she would have to do her job... While on clock... Getting paid to be here BY CHOICE! We got a 7 day pass. But hold on guys, this was no ordinary 7 day pass. This pass took roughly 30 minutes of intense questioning, you know because the rate of gym membership scams has increased to the millions. We damn near needed to give an organ and two teeth for this 7 DAY MEMBERSHIP! I mean seriously guys! We went there on two occasions to workout. Both experiences were cringe worthy, but let's talk about the most recent. The "Sales Manager" with Freddie Kruger nails insinuated that our passes, given to us by their employee, was given to us by mistake? TF, she proceeded to question the legitimacy of my conversation regarding the 7 DAY PASS!! Like seriously, it's not a free year it's 7 friggin days!! She was so rude. The only thing I kept saying to myself is, "Wow, she's a manager?" So sadly we will be going to Planet Fitness.

This location has lost me today after 5 months into my gold membership.
Came in to work out at 5 pm today with a guest; immediately acquired cycling passes for the evening cycling class - this has ALWAYS been the protocol at every Gold's I have ever been to. Within minutes of our workout, one of the front desk staff came and pulled the cycling pass from my guest's hand saying 'The class is full, we have to prioritize members first' - Rude, but understandable; still, it's wrong to prioritize members not present over the finite number of passes that are always issued first-come-first-served at the front desk. Why offer a gold membership with guest pass included with classes otherwise? At 6:15 I began warming up for the 6:30 cycling class alone only to see a swathe of members barge in without passes just to fight over spots in the class like a debate on 'The View', even visibly frustrating the spin instructor. My mental focus was zapped and I walked out.
Beyond an especially rough class experience with typically busy and packed classes in general, my biggest issue with this location really boils down to personal hygiene - Most of the staff embody fitness lifestyles and are helpful, but the excessively long & curved fingernails on some staff members is downright gag-inducing on sight and not a facet of personal fitness I'm aware of.
I have had better experiences at the Fan location & Mechanicsville.

Gym memberships are equivalent to cable TV packages. They don't sell you what you want; its more of a here is what you get and you better like it.

Figured I'll give this gym a try again because it expanded. Thought the atmosphere would change to be positive after a year but no. Guys Still have that jail mentality holding machines for their buddies. Mens locker room is small, dirty, and lockers screws has been tampered with. Water fountain filter rarely been changed. Nobody rerack their weights. People taking photos and video of themselves while other is trying to workout. Personal trainers take advantage of certain types of people and try to ask for money underneath the books. People are let into the gym just because they are friends with staff members. Diversity is rare due to the demographics in the location. Gym has expanded with new equipment but it is geared towards cross fit training. Most of the new equipment is spread all over the place to whereas it take 20 mins just to find what your looking for. The staff members rarely care to assist putting things back in place. Most if the time they are sitting at the desk talking or texting.

I call this gym in November 2017 asking when my contract was over so I could cancel my membership. They told me that the contract would not end until February 2018 and if I canceled it before then I would have to pay a $50 cancellation fee. I call January 2018 and they tell me that the contract already ended and that I can cancel my account but I still have to pay for $25 for the month of February plus the $20 annual fee. Even though I no longer want a membership with them.
