Disgusting gym, haven’t been to a gym worse than this. Allows homeless people to be members just to use the shower and locker room area without even actually using any gym equipment. Homeless people are sleeping the different areas. The gym constantly smells and looks unclean.

Thai place was amazing. Being from DC I needed a Golds to stay on course. They were open, clean, pretty empty. And no broken equipment. Whenever I visit my daughter. This is where I’ll be going!

open 24/7, plates racked, and there’s always a squat rack free. Staff hype you up without the sales pitch, lockers and sauna stay spotless, and the vibe in The Fan feels like old‑school Gold’s with new‑school gear. Best place in RVA to chase PRs.

Loved this gym when I lived in Richmond to the point where I kept my membership open even when dealing with PT for my back& couldn’t go to the gym. I got transferred for work, I called over 4 weeks ago& left a message with someone at the desk to have a manager call me so I could know where to send the paperwork to but I never received a call back& was charged the annual fee still. The lack of communication is greatly lacking, I also called again today& the guy I spoke to first was very nice and told me that he’d transfer me to the GM so I could get my membership cancelled and the annual returned, I was transferred the guy was very snippy, took no information from me and said, “I don’t know why you were told that I can just prevent you from getting charged further.” Then the phone line went dead so here I am now 10 minutes later.

I’ve been a member here for 7+ years until I had to make the switch to the Willow Lawn location. Ultimately cancelling because $30/mo for a basic, single location, membership is nuts and I am off and on traveling in the coming months. Tried to call to cancel because THE LINK DOES NOT WORK ONLINE and was told it has to be in-person or via a letter in the mail. Manager of the Willow Lawn location was lovely and said this is in fact something they can do via email, despite what this location's manager said.
I stopped going to The Fan location initially due to: moldy water fountains (often broken), irregular temperatures throughout (cardio area is HOT) , smells like sweat and mold the second you walk in, women’s room was filthy, showers were covered in mildew, parking was a nightmare, machines often broken and also covered in sweat and dust, TVs often broken, the list goes on.
Looking forward to never stepping foot in here again! I’m sure the FTC’s click to cancel rule will magically make the cancellation link work when it goes into effect.

i used to really love this location but i think it’s time to switch. there hasn’t been hand sanitizer at any of the stations for weeks, the women’s restroom is…gross tbh. there’s been no toilet paper the last 3x i’ve gone (in the morning) and it’s not clean. a lot of basic/well loved machines are “under repair” for a long time. overall it’s just not being maintained well and it makes me sad because i really loved it when i switched a year ago :(

I've been coming to this gym for more than 10 years. I continued paying through COVID despite not going for the year. I did this because I felt like I wanted to support the staff. Going to a gym isn't just about the equipment. For that, I could work out at home. It's about the people along with you on your journey. This gym, and I suppose this particular gym franchise goes through an insane number of staff members. I can't even begin to call off all the names of the people who have come through this location. In all my years, there hasn't been anyone like this one guy, Mike. He was spectacular. I don't know why he isn't here anymore but he was an amazing assistant manager. He knew members by name and used their names. He didn't just welcome people, he was genuine. This gym could be an amazing place if they could manage to keep any staff. Something is going on with the franchise to be burning through staff like this. A gym that has its flaws is bearable with a personable, vested staff. An equiped gym with no connection to anyone is a recipe for disaster. It's the people you connect with, not the machines. Please do better.

I recently joined Gold's Gym in the Fan and have had a great experience so far. The gym is always clean, well-organized, and the staff, including GM Aaron, is fantastic. I’m able to get a great workout, even during busy times, and I always leave feeling energized. The members are friendly, and the positive vibe here is noticeable. However, I do have some concerns about the recent towing situation. Several members, including myself, have had their cars towed from the gym's parking lot, and it’s become a bit of a frustration. I’ve been a member for years, and this is the first time I’ve encountered this issue. It cost me $215 to retrieve my car, and I believe the gym should address what’s going on. I hope management can provide some clarity on this situation so that we can continue to enjoy our workouts without added stress.

Only pro to this place is the price.
Cons include:
5+ pieces of broken equipment all the time since no preventative maintenance is being done.
Equipment usually stays broken for a month+ before any fixes happen.
The smell of the gym is reminiscent of a high school locker room after football practice.
There’s a surprising lack of airflow and number of fans for a gym in the Fan. The ones that do exist are super grimey.
The men’s locker room is usually disgusting with one person taking over every single flat space available. Occasionally there are just people “hanging out” in there. Not awkward at all.
Just don’t go in the sauna. There’s usually at least one person trying to workout in there anyways and it’s tiny.
You’re almost guaranteed to end up on someone’s instagram/tiktok if you lift here due to the amount of people with tripods filming.
Until an owner or management decides to actually take pride or ownership of their business and clean it up a bit and start doing some regular maintenance I’d highly recommend going to any other gym. This one is a hard pass.

It’s the biggest time of the year for Golds Gym and guess what…
7 treadmills are broken
TV’s are not working
Sauna is 70 degrees
Homeless people are laying on equipment charging their cell phones.
Told Tanning Beds are not working (as of 1/3 morning by guy at front desk)
Where did all the hand sanitizer go? I noticed it last year, but figured I throw that in there too while I’m here.

Nice gym. It seems like a small gym but it’s not. It just has small rooms and not an open floor plan like most gyms. This is due to the location of facility which is in the fan. The building is pretty built like the houses that surround it. But at any rate, I’ve been coming here for years and I’ve always had a good experience.

When you walk in the door some stink slaps in the face. I don't know if its sweat, bo or some other funk. its dark, zero natural light anywhere in the building except the 4th level which is practically useless. the place is cut up, 4 floors. sorry no elevator. not that I need an elevator but still...
Locker room likewise stinks. its small cramped and I wouldn't get in one of the nasty showers without scuba gear on gross.
yo golds staff why is ok for members to park on machines and stare at their phones between sets? how bout walking the floor and forcing people to move, stare at your phone elsewhere even if no one is waiting. I'm not a gym rat in fact I hate the gym. I go bc well, it's important right) I want in and out of the gym. the gym is not a social event for me. finish my work out and go. and what's with canceling your membership rules and polices? you must cancel before the fourth Tuesday after Christmas but before easter and only after 3pm but before 6. should you not follow all of the above bam! hit your credit card. I'm exaggerating but you get the idea. it's a hassle. if you must be a member of golds go to the willow lawn location. Harvie street sucks. Go to the Y clean, bright and no funk!

I’ve never been a gym girlie, but I wanted to make some better life choices and felt that started with a gym membership and some personal training. Thank my anxiety-ridden stars that Justin was there because he has absolutely helped me come out of my shell. He is extremely observant, intuitive, and inspiring as he guides you through your workout. He checks in frequently and encourages you without making you feel “bad” for struggling. You will see improvement every single session and Justin will be right there cheering with you! And while physical improvement is great, Justin also stresses the importance of feeling good emotionally and mentally! Basically I’m just here to sing his praises until he makes me do squats again… then I’m here to complain.

Update. Over these past few weeks I’ve seen how management interacts with staff it’s completely unacceptable. The night stand are by far the filthiest so i try changing my routine to come in the mornings or early afternoons. This weekend alone so far there’s been no one there in the mornings and this place just looks horrible. I’ve wanted to purchase things such as a shirt and a thing of chips but couldn’t due to nobody was ever at the front desk. i can only hope within the upcoming time period things go back on the up and up 🙏🏽.

Honestly it’s been a nightmare to deal with this gym. I went in person to cancel and the front desk lady who attended me, took down my information and promised me that I wouldn’t get charged again. They proceeded to charged me two more times!! I called, spoke to a manager that belittled me. He told me that he was going to take care of it and get the money refunded. Two weeks passed with no refund. I opened my bank app today and saw that they charged me a third time. I’ve called twice to speak to a manager today. Both times they said he “was busy” and that he would return the call. Still no call and no refund. This place is ridiculous.

Do NOT join this Golds unless you plan on being a member for life. I’ve gone in to the gym in person and cancelled multiple times and filled out the form multiple times yet they still charge me. Then I called to cancel because I refuse to go in a 4th time to fill out the paperwork again and they just keep hanging up or sending my call to voicemail.

I have been a member of Gold's Gym for a considerable period, and I have been consistently frustrated with the maintenance and cleanliness of the sauna. The multi week closures and lack of repairs has become a significant source of disappointment for me. The sauna is an essential part of my gym routine, and its closure has forced me to seek alternative facilities.
Please consider replacing the old worn out wood planks and perform a deep cleaning of the sauna while it remains closed. This would not only improve the overall quality of the facility but also ensure the safety and comfort of its members.

The Gold Gym on Cary Street in the FAN struggles to properly vet it's clientele / members given numerous disenfranchised individuals utilize the facilities for shelter and hygiene purposes.. I downloaded a guest pass online because I’m closer to this location getting off of work. Long story short, I gave them my ID, they told me to pick it up before I left. When I was about to leave, no one was anywhere to be found. A letter was left at the front desk saying “employee is currently on a lap.” WTH does that mean? And how am I suppose to leave with no drivers license ? They’re in need a better system because I was late to an appointment because I had to wait for someone to get back

Gym is okay - pros: lots of equipment, nice staff, not terribly crowded in the evenings after 8pm, management is updating things consistently.
Cons: very aggressive towing company who monitors the parking lot very closely and even wrongfully tows. Despite the signs, people are still getting towed. Gold’s gym staff needs verbally let people know as they sign in and ensure they parked in a marked spot. Additionally, the workout mats need to be replaced so they can be more easily cleaned.

All they play here is profanity laced rap music 24/7. It’s so loud it over powers my earbuds. I wish they’d go around and ask the people there if they like the music, but they don’t care. All we ask for is some mix up every now and then. The last manager at least gauged the audience and brought different types. This place has gone downhill fast. And now I’ll get the generic response they give all reviews cause they sure as hell don’t read them and if they do they don’t take any action.
Edit: one month later, no change. Actually it’s probably worse. I’m here out of necessity and I hate it but I have no other choice for the moment.

I've been a member for about 15 years mostly because it's convenient. Certainly nothing special - no one knows how to re-rack weights or return equipment to its proper place after use. It's not the dirtiest gym I've ever been it, but probably in the top 5, and it's always daylight saving time because no one has the initiative to set the clocks

Read some reviews before I visited which scared me, but felt that I had responsibility to write this after signing up. Moved down to Richmond a few months ago so I was checking out different gyms to join. Joined this spot because of the variety of equipment, the space, open 24 hours, the cleanliness, and the mannerisms of manager and staff when I first entered. They broke down the different options for me, very smooth, very helpful and very friendly. The manager, Mike, always asks and checks on me when I walk by, and the rest of the staff is usually smiling and friendly. Just to give u context, I was a member of the same company gym in DC for years and I didn't know any staff members name. All in all Dope spot, also has a parking lot, bike parking for us urban pirates, and the locker room is clean with a sauna. Only thing missing is steam room and a pool,.... but yo... Dope spot

They shut down during covid with no warning or message. They didn't answer the phone, their doors were locked, and you couldn't cancel your membership. At the start of the next month you got charged for membership despite no access to facilities, and no way to freeze or cancel your membership. I attended this gym for 1 year before finally making the smart decision to switch to Crunch. We have gone in every day for the past 4 days to cancel our membership, and have gotten different excuses as to why they can’t cancel it at the moment. I have been charged for the month even though I’ve been trying to cancel all week. The gym is dirty, smelly, and the employees don’t seem to be having a good time. The consequence of this gym’s leadership’s irresponsibility is that my car was towed this afternoon while I was working out. When I approached the front desk to ask what might have happened to my vehicle, the workers shared with me that towing was instituted recently. The workers then mentioned a pass, offered one, but hinted that I should share my story with leadership. It appears that workers knew that instituting a towing policy without appropriately warning customers could be bad for business.
There was no email campaign, telephone messaging, in house flyering or communication at check in. Also, there are no posted signs warning of the risk of towing for members in the parking lot itself. While I was having this conversation with the manager, a significant number of members entered and announced that they were also unaware. Will be cancelling my membership .

It’s better now with the top floor renovation, but still not as good as other Richmond Gold’s. Lack of plates, clips, or other small details that make this gym just average. It’s crowded during typical peak times but otherwise there’s sufficient equipment.
Update: been here over a year so i downgraded my review. Still lack a lot of plates and clips which is frustrating. Not surprised, just disappointed lol. With the amount of people who come here and recent membership fee increase I find it hard they are cash strapped.
3rd update- be prepared for an unannounced $15 “annual fee” that you pay once/yr for no reason. So this month I paid $50 instead of $34.

This gym has refused to cancel my membership despite numerous attempts on my end to cancel. I called and left messages, sent a physical letter and showed up in person on numerous occasions to attempt to speak with a manager to cancel my membership and every attempt was denied. They have posted business hours of 10-7 and at the time had hours from 9-6. Each visit was made during business hours but I was told the manager was either out of office or unavailable. I live over half an hour away from this location and would have to leave work early each attempt I made in order to meet with the manager and to no avail. This Gold’s Gym is practicing predatory business methods by preventing members from cancelling and then attempting to take it to collections or have the member re-join for a 3 month membership which would erase the debt when faced with a potential cancellation. Do not join if you are not prepared for a LIFETIME commitment of dues

These people are scammers who care more about your money than your health and well being. They intentionally make canceling unreasonably difficult so they can nickel and dime you. I was forced to pay for 4 months of a membership I didn't use just so I could cancel. They threatened to keep adding charges and fines every month for the rest of my life, and eventually send to collections. And even after I paid they kept charging me until I cancelled my card. Also the gym is dirty and the staff is very rude and unhelpful, especially the sales manager. Don't give these people your money. They are lower than dirt.

I do not recommend a membership at this location. It took me over a month to officially finalize my cancellation. I was first told I can do it by email at the beginning of October 2021. It was not until mid October that I was finally contacted and told I would have to cancel in person. I then spoke with the general assistant manager, Andrew, in person. I asked if there was anything else I needed to do and he told me no. A week later I found out it was not cancelled. I then spoke to the general manager, Danielle, who assisted me with cancelling the membership by email so I would not have to return to the office again. I am glad I had the contact in my email so I could prove to ABC Fitness Solutions when they contacted me in December about an overdue account. This was the biggest headache ever. Even when I try to call the location to speak about this ongoing issue, I am not able to get in touch with anyone. Their mailbox is also full.

Typical predatory membership where they haven't caught up with technology and let you cancel like a normal place in 2021. Also trying to charge me a cancellation fee for a 30 day notice despite no contract and a "no-hassle" membership even though I'm suddenly moving away.

This gym might be one of the worst maintained gyms I’ve ever gone to. You also find yourself playing “where’s the dumbbell” almost daily. To top it off there’s multiple rooms that dumbbells are tossed and sometimes the weight is just missing altogether. I’ll be looking for another gym.

I am extremely disappointed with this business. I was a member of the gym for about a year preceding the pandemic. I stopped going to the gym roughly about the time the pandemic took a serious turn (mid March). This gym closed during this time. As a result, I stopped paying my monthly dues. About 10 months later, I received a call from a collections agency to collect $250 for past due monthly payments. To be fair, I did not communicate with Golds. But also, to be fair, I never went inside that gym during any month for which I had not paid. I did not owe them money. I was paying for a service (access to work out at the gym). I did not receive that service and therefore I did not pay. I certainly don’t believe a collections agency was necessary. As a result of the relatively low amount plus possible damage to my credit I just paid the credit agency but I feel it was disingenuous to send my account to a credit agency. I am sure the COVID pandemic hit Gold’s revenue very hard, and as a result they started looking for ways to recover money as quickly as possible. However, I should not have been that charity. It’s not my responsibility to keep them
in business. I strongly dislike this business.

I love all the equipment and staff but I honestly don’t feel safe with the amount of people walking around (especially in the weight area) without their masks. I get it while on the cardio equipment but there’s not much reason to not wear a mask while weightlifting or AT LEAST in between sets if you’re wandering around. Ive also seen a ton of sweaty guys never wipe down a single machine after they’ve used it, which is gross even without covid. I’ve never seen a staff member tell someone to put on their mask. Please do something about the people not wearing their masks when they’re supposed to!

Gold's Gym in the Fan is a great local place for the community to work on yourself and improve your everyday lifestyle. I was nervous early this year with COVID-19 given that I am in the healthcare industry, but having been a member at the Fan for a considerable amount of time, I can truly say I am very impressed with their cleaning staff and the precautionary sanitation measures they have taken.
Every time I walk through the door I'm greeted with a wide-open welcome and assurance that safety measures are taking place. Just the other day I asked the general manager to open my favorite piece of equipment that was closed off for social distancing and he was able to accommodate me in a safe manner without compromising the safety of others or myself.
Overall, if you're searching for a local 24/7 gym that is right for you, I highly suggest checking out this one here in the Fan.

After the shutdown I had been itching to get back in the gym. I recently moved to Richmond and decided to try out golds gym. I really like the place, the staff is always really friendly, and when I twisted my ankle using their punching bag, they gave me a free month so I wasn’t charged while I recovered.
Extremely considerate of my circumstance, meant a lot to me with the financial hardship I’ve faced recently with the whole COVID Pandemic. I would definitely recommend them!

I called to cancel my membership. The guy was very kind, however their policy for cancellation is unprofessional, dangerous and inappropriate considering the current pandemic. They require you come in person to fill out a form. Every industry utilizes electronic signature and is routine in most business settings. There is absolutely no reason a client should have to come in to sign a form other than that so they can continue to collect payments. The alternative the suggested is writing a letter to get the account cancelled. This is 2020- you should be able to do it over the phone, online, or through electronic signature as this is a very basic concept. The gym is typically dusty, over crowded, and poorly organized beyond that.

I participated in this gym's 7 day free trial back in January 2020, cancelled several days in, following their guidelines and rules for the trial, and was told that my card would not be charged. It was, of course, charged as if I had not cancelled the trial and had continued on as a member. After a number of emails and calls to reach the managers Dana and Jared, and finally a visit to the gym to speak in person, I was told several times that the financial office had been contacted and I should expect my refund in the following days. Nearly four months later and I have still not received the money. Super disappointed in their customer service and lack of professionalism from start to finish.

I regularly go to the this golds because of the convenience and friends I have made since I have been going. The golds staff is great and always friendly. I would love to give 5 stars but the equipment needs an update which is where my rant will begin. They have added some things but it is a bodybuilding gym, there needs to be some hammer strength equipment and more variety of machines. The turf room is crowded with "personal" training groups (groups=not personal). Lady golds is a waste of space. There doesn't need to be two separate cardio rooms. People need to learn to re rack their weights and the sweat balls in there need to wipe off equipment. I will willing teach an etiquette class for people once a week for a free membership and a hammer strength machine. If you're interested let me know.....Hey owner you never reached out

I joined a year ago and I like this Gym. It is small and cozy. Once you get to know the floor plan, it is easy to get around. I also like the front desk people. They have been always friendly, always polite and responsive.
I understand that there are issues with membership fees and "switch and bait" practices, however no one will charge you a fee if you have a written agreement signed. It is illegal. You need to ask questions and be more in tuned with the polices.
I tried Golds at Willow Lawn and decided that it was not for me. I will stick to the this one.

Stay golden Gold’s! I’m reposting after seeing some of the negative reviews. I’ve been a member for 7 plus years here and it’s grown like any other establishment. There will always be changes in staff and some aspects of the gym are great others are meh. However, this gym has and is constantly progressing not regressing. If you had a bad experience once that doesn’t mean the place lacks in substance. Also, robots writing good reviews for local gyms...that’s a stretch Mr Robot.

Came in for a free week pass as advertised online. Was asked to submit my card information and pay"Free Week Trial Fee" after which I would be automatically enrolled in a normal membership. Employee at the front desk was very rude when I enquired why I would have to pay a fee for a "free" pass (Only cost $2.45, but that's not free). When I told her I hadn't even brought my debit card she just apologized for not being able to help and waited for me to leave.
During my interaction with the front desk employee a member called in wishing to cancel their membership. They were told that they could not cancel their membership until the General Manager was working, which was 4 days later. They would also have to pay for an additional 30 days after their cancel request.
Overall these were all very bad business practices and blatant red flags of a company that doesn't care about their customer base. Will not sign up for membership at this location.

So Gold’s is already known for being kind of a weird scene, and I’ve been warned against it so many times. But when I visited this particular location, since it’s closest to where I live, I was actually angered. 1). The staff never payed any attention to my sister-in-law and I (who went to workout together). From the moment we walked in, through the multiple times that we accidentally wandered by the front desk (over and over again) the staff was entirely unhelpful and extremely lazy. 2). The place is a literal maze. We wandered around for a good half hour, just looking for their free weight room. When we finally found it, we were met with judgmental stares that were so unpleasant and so uncomfortable, that we left after only 5 minutes of finding what we were looking for (and by that time, we’d already been there a good 45 minutes, and had wasted all this time just looking for the weight room). 3). It was SOOOO insulting when we found the “Women’s Workout Room” somewhere between leaving the weight room and finding the exit, and the only things in there were a bunch of cardio machines and no free weights... as if women don’t lift weights. As if we’re nothing but cardio bunnies. That was the final straw. After an hour of wandering around in this maze, we finally found our way out, got in the car, and drove to the Willow Lawn location for an actual workout. Not worth it. Don’t go here. If you’re gonna insist on being a Gold’s member, at least go to Willow Lawn.

My friends and I all really enjoy working out here, the place is always clean and all the employees are always helpful! We all talk about the equipment that we like/don’t or that you guys seem to be missing that some of the other gyms have! You guys lack the hammer strength equipment which is better I feel since it actually has knurling on the handles instead of the soft rubber so we can lift heavier, and you guys lack a crucial leg machine called a hack squat(tons of other members always mention that) all in all most of the equipment is great. It would be cool if you got some new bars though since all but one actually have any grip/knurling! Other then that I can’t complain!

I noticed tons of people complaining about their bait-and-switch membership tactics at this location. Since I had a membership from the Willow Lawn location, I never dealt with that part of the business. The location, which is some old converted factory, feels crowded and cavernous. Your first time there you're bound to get lost quite a bit, or not realize that certain rooms even exist. That being said, when I went there a few times, I had no problems. The main reason why I'm giving it a 3 is the lack of machines and space.
Also, be forewarned. The plethora of positive reviews this location has is most likely fake reviews trying to boost their numbers up.

Caveat emptor. Be prepared for a bait and switch. If like me you're enticed by a promotion run near the end of the month (to pad application stats I'm assuming) to join without paying the sign up fees, be aware that any money handed over will not be coming back to you.
When we went in to sign up under this promotion, we were told that the computer system couldn't waive the fees but we'd receive a refund for the difference. After asking about the refund a handful of times over 3 months, still nothing. To add insult to injury, they blamed the delay on their 3rd party processing contractor, but I can see very clearly from my credit card statement the gold franchise (and not the 3rd party processing contractor) was the merchant that processed, and can refund, the payment.
The space is a standard commercial gym, and the run-around given in regards to our refund drives that home. Be prepared for the high pressure sales environment when you go in for your "free trial."
EDIT: I visited with Gold's gym management many times about this issue (4+ times) and every time was given a confused look and "we'll look into it" but nothing ever happened. The response below is typical outward facing fluff.

I joined the compel program through a different gym and had to switch over because of an emergency move.
My issue with the transfer is not completely resolved BUT I’m a lot less confused! My 5 star rating is for the response from both the compel and golds gym front desk staff.
They are going through a transition since compel is new at this facility. I got to see Justin from compel almost immediately after coming to them with my concerns yesterday and was told that I could continue working out until they resolve the issue. Today I got to speak to Robert who was also helpful in finding the root cause of the issue. I saw that I interrupted them from whatever they were doing but they still took the time to help me.
I’ve dealt with gym management in the past that try to get rid of people with issues instead of taking them seriously - very thankful that this hasn’t been like that.
As for the compel training:
I worked out with Brandi and she was good at coming up with exercises on the fly when I asked for legs and then switched it to arms when my legs were gassed out. My legs already feel wobbly. She was super nice, especially since I was struggle bussing a bit this morning :).
Thanks y’all!
