Front desk staff was so amazing and helpful (Summer*)!!! I’ve had 2 sessions with Randy Quinones to start, and he was very attentive to my needs and goals. I appreciated the personal connection as well as his guidance easing into weights. Thanks for being awesome you guys πŸ’œ

The elderly try to run the cardio and weight room and the machines are always broken. The elderly get mad if you use a machine that they want and most of the time the gym is empty on weekends and after 6pm. The machines are very old and outdated. I have tried to lap swim but kids take over the pool a majority of the time and families do not understand what lap swimming means.

Love the heated salt water pool. Also the afternoon exercise class stretch and tone. Always well led and friendly folks in the class.

We visited this particular location seeking information centered around what programs YMCA has to offer. Summer and DeBorah the receptionists were very welcoming, warm, inviting, and knowledgeable. Both individuals answered all of our questions and made themselves available at a later time if we had additional questions or concerns. They made us feel at home.

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. On Tuesday January 21 2025. the black lady with the blue braids and black glasses ruined my experience at this location and I’ve been coming here for 2 years. I recently renewed my membership and was bringing my underage 18 YO sister with me as a guest. She ended up giving her a free week of working out, like she can use it anyway, because of the snow. She said if I give this to you, you better lick me on my face and my sister had too cover her face because she was scared, when the lady walked past her. She kept on harassing us saying I knew yall wasn’t in here really working out meanwhile I’m creating content for my sports brand. I’m soo upset that I have to go to another location because this was my favorite one in Hampton ROADS. ☹️ -Jasmine Stackhouse

Very disappointed in the attitude of the new staff at the front desk as of February 2024. Either you like your job, respect your clients or find another job.

What was supposed to be a positive, enriching summer camp experience for my 5-year-old grandson turned out to be a nightmare. After 2 voicemails to the summer camp coordinator, a hand-written note to her from a nice front desk staff member who was empathetic, a text and a phone call to her from another staff member asking her to call me, and a voice mail to the executive director, I have yet to receive a return call. (I started calling 4 AUG.)
My grandson was teased about his disfigured hand by another camper, and she enlisted several other campers to "not be friends with him or talk to him" because of his difference. To see a bright-eyed, innocent child who was so eager to attend camp with such enthusiasm be reduced to an inconsolable, sobbing, sad child at the mere mention of camp is heart-wrenching. He was supposed to attend camp all summer, but he has not been back since the end of July. He has learned how to handle bullies and their comments, but this time his strategies did not work. I simply wanted to let the summer camp coordinator and/or the Director know that the campers (and this girl's parents) might need a talk about diversity and acceptance.

Staff at the front desk and instructors are amazing! But .. I had one bad experience with child care. I have given child care permission to change my daughter. Before I left for the pool , I told child care that she has pants, new underwear and shoes if she has an accident, I also explained my 3 yr old can't climb an adult toilet unassisted. Instead of calling me , the child care worker had my daughter in wet pants, shoes, making her WALK through the facility in urine. Through the women's locker room and to the pool and l was left with her. " bring her back if you want ". And leaves me sopping wet trying to help my child. Literally hands me my child and darts off from the locker room with out her "accident bag" with change of pants ,etc. .
I had to carry my child out of the facility ( I had back surgery, the reason im even at the YMCA), my daughter half wrapped in a wet towel , barefoot and I had to go back the next day to get her " accident bag" that should have been used to change her or given to me in the locker room.

Facility is clean enough but children’s stay n play area is unsatisfactory. Parents pay membership fees for their children and this facility cannot compare to others in the area, which I feel is unfair to the littlest members of the Y. The room is much too small and crowded and the staff I’ve encountered both times I’ve taken my child were outright rude and disinterested. I witnessed a child open the flimsy gate and attempt to escape twice in the three minutes it took me to drop off my child. There are also no name tags for children like there are in other Ys in the area. I would love if this facility could get its childcare up to par with the others in the area, if not with the size then with the attentiveness and attitude of the staff.

I love me some Hilltop YMCA. Been a member 10years plus. My home away from home. Everyone is so helpful in helping you reach your goals and to a more healthy lifestyle. Members of the YMCA are truly like a small family, we motivate each other.

Joined nine months ago. Staff are always friendly and engaging. It is inspiring to see how well they work with people with disabilities and provide a sense of community. Not a glitzy fashion gym but well equipped. My wife has enjoyed the yoga classes and we don't use the spin cycle room or the pool but we enjoy the saunas. Crazy as it seems, I am motivated by the Activtrax T shirt awards system. Good price point for a family and the dues help the community as well as provide service.

This YMCA is a fantastic workout environment. Their staff is friendly and helpful and their pool is a welcome relief for us swimmers who cannot venture into the cold in the late Fall and winter months. Plus there are classes and one-on-one training is available. To me the value is exceptional.

Have only ever been here for Parents Nights Out which are great due to location and schedule. Definitely not one of the newer facilities and the program isn't as strong as some of the other Ys (no food offerend and they just plop them in front of a movie for the last couple hours), but enjoy that it is an option and will use it again.

Worst experience my child has ever gone through. Instructors would always report everything he does wrong even if it was something as small and forgetting to cover his mouth when he coughed. No positive reinforcement for my son at all and you would expect some from a Christian foundation. The gym was run down and play area too small to accommodate so many kids. The only activities they offered during summer was "field trips to tropical smoothie or two stores down to the paint a cup place, playing in the gym, back parking lot or small play area. If they had to cancel an event you paid for, they kept your money anyway. Very hard to find parking and if you were lucky enough to find somewhere, someone would park behind you to run in and get their kid so you had to wait for them before you could leave. Eventually there was an event between my kid an another and was told he could let him come back until two days later. The other kid didn't get punished at all and was just as equally at guilt. On the day he was allowed to return, my son was waiting at the school for the ymca bus, my wife and I were at work. We got a call from the school that the ymca wasn't allowing him on the bus and we need to come get him. The school kept him there without any charge or punishment because they were mad at the y too and I had to leave work, missing the rest of the day of pay to have to stay home with him. I called the y and asked why they refused him to go and they flat out lied to me telling me he couldn't return until he had a note from so and so and was re-approved to return, which was completely contradictory to what I was told two days prior. They also told me that no one had told me he could come back two days later and I'm "making that up." I was out $40 in pay, had to find somewhere for him to go after school (being that there was no way I was jumping through their hoops for him to return) all because I was lied to and because they obviously didn't like my son in the first place. He's somewhere else and much happier, the heck with the ymca hilltop.

Sent my kindergartner & 1st grader here for before and after school care. There were discipline problems with other kids treating my children poorly. It was brought to the attention of the directors numerous times and not handled. There are no consequences for the actions of children who bully and spit in the faces of other children. All they will do is "talk to their parents." We were forced to find another daycare so that our children could be safe. Do not let your children go here. The adage you get what you pay for definitely rings true.

Extremely disappointed with their swim lessons. First class was canceled because instructor was unavailable but was told they don't do make-ups (unless you sign up for another session - then they discount one lesson.) Then when we finally did have class the instructor had no roster, so sorting out admin took 10 minutes (of a 30 minute lesson). Too many students for one instructor - no quality time with any one student. Next, this was a preschool class, meant for 3-5 year olds, but an 8 and 10 year old were allowed in, distracting the teacher. Instructor was not good with young children, but probably because she was distracted and frazzled with too many kids of differing skill sets and ages. Pool is also all wrong for preschool-age students. This is a lane swim/swim team pool only; there's no adequate shallow area for small children to get out energy while waiting for their turn with teacher. Finally? The Great Neck rec center has longer classes (40 minutes) for a lower price ($50/session vs $70) in a bigger pool with better locker room and overall facilities. So sorry I wasted money and time on this place.

My family and I have been attending the Y for almost 3 years now. It's a great environment, and my children absolutely LOVE it. I joined so my son could go to the preschool program, and my daughter the before/after school program. . He learned so much, so quickly! He even learned how to swim! My husband and I work out there now, and my children attend the after school program. The YMCA is definitely not the cheapest daycare provider in the area. However, it's worth every penny! Compared to the REC and other programs... the Y surpasses them all.
