I called this gym in advance of getting there to ask about there guest pass policy. Once I get to the door you scan the QR code and pay to get a guest pass which I completed. Nothing was emailed to me after sign up was completed. I called and text the number that was provided and it went straight to VM, knocked on the door, waited a half hour. Then gave up and left. Mind you I called the night before and no one answered. Truly unprofessional. If you don’t have anyone at the front desk the least this business can do is answer there phones.

Edit: something has shifted with this gym. There has been some turnover in employees or management. Floors and equipment are consistently dirty. There’s been a water fountain broken since November 2024. The front door has been broken for over a month. And the only music that gets played in the gym is rap (never any variety). I will be looking for a new place to workout.

Great gym! As a 10 year American Family Fitness member, I was tired of the corporate greed and lack of care for the customer. I wanted a good gym that cared for its members and kept equipment updated and maintained, but not too big and corporate. Iron Built fit the bill. I don’t miss AmFam at all.

Phenomenal gym and great atmosphere for lifters of all types & ages.

The CHAMPS program for youth lifters has been fantastic as well. In just two months of participating in Champs, we noticed a remarkable transformation in our son. Not only did his agility, speed, and strength improve significantly, but more importantly, he gained confidence and took ownership of maintaining a healthy body and mind.

Couldn't recommend this gym enough, amazing facility, has everything from powerlifting, to personal training, to hypertrophy/ bodybuilding equipment, an owner that cares, new equipment and changes to the facility coming in frequently, having been to gyms all over America while managing a few myself Ironbuilt is quite possibly the best gym I've ever been to, even if you are not local, if you are a true "gym rat" Ironbuilt Richmond, VA needs to be on your list.

My son was interested in joining so he printed the free 3 day pass from the website, went into the gym and was told by someone at the front desk that they did not know what that was and to just go home and sign up for a membership... Now he has no desire to join. NOT a very nice way to treat potential customers...

This is the first gym I tried when I moved to the RVA, and probably the last! This place is amazing! The constant improvements are great. I love that all the machines are unique and not found in every gym around. The staff is great and the 24/7 access is superb. I absolutely love being a member!

So if I was going to rate on equipment selection alone, five stars. State of facility 4. Business operations 1, and it really gets in the way of everything else.

I’m in Ashland each year for Christmas and at home I go to a solid gym with dumbbells to 130, oodles of plates, etc. so last year when I did a couple day passes I fell in love with this spot.

Seems a promising early start has not turned into a sustainably run business. 15 bucks for a day passes is steep but worth the equipment selection, 40 for a week a steal- if you could get in at all. It’s really apparent that the pass and door system was set up when they opened and no one has tended the website or checked in with the door code vendor since.

If you’re traveling and looking for a place where you can continue your training on vacation, look elsewhere becuase these guys just can’t deliver.

Came to this gym via referral from a trusted friend to get personal training. My trainer is amazing and the community feel is just as awesome! No matter what the time or day you are met with smiles, someone’s always willing to help and encourage you! Love this gym!

I've been going to this gym for a year now and at first I loved it they would always make improvements which made the gym fresh and really showed that they were passionate about its growth and its members. In my review from 9 months ago, l gave the gym 5 stars. But as of recently, the gym feels like it's going downhill. Ever since l've been going to this gym they promised a sauna. After 1 year the sauna is still not working. Every month I would ask the employees if there were any updates on the sauna and they would always say they are waiting on a part and that it should be open in a month or so. It seems like this gym isn't focused on the members' experience and is more forced on the events that they hold for powerlifting. Also recently every time I go to the gym something's broken or not working. If you asked me 6 months ago if I would ever switch gyms I would said never but recently I've been debating switching. It's really sad seeing this for iron built because it's a pretty solid gym. The premium price of $55 a month just doesn't seem like a premium product anymore. And it's not just me I've talked to at least 5 members that are planning on canceling their membership because of this.
Hopefully, the Ironbuilt staff can improve based on this review and I hope they do.

Our family is super excited about starting our journey with this family and this gym. Craig is such an unbelievable personal trainer and has an amazing program and the whole reason I joined and I am so glad I found him on Instagram. I was super impressed about everyone I met so far. Sadly, this gym is amazing, has an amazing staff, and has decent equipment. There are 3 things, however, that urk me to the point of breaking whether or not it's worth it.

Number 1: if you call and ask for prices, they will tell you $25, but when you show up, it'll be $55 charged on your card. TWICE! Once for the first month and once for a security deposit for your last.

Number 2: THEY LIE ABOUT THE SHOWERS AND SAUNA. I signed up LAST YEAR. The tour included a sauna that was supposed to be done in the next ONE MONTH and showers that were to be done in the next WEEK. It has been over a year and the showers were never finished with hot water. The sauna is unusable and still not even completed or hooked up, and these were priced as amenities when I signed up as if I would have access. I asked other members and they said the gym has been promising a working shower since it opened years ago

Number 3: If you want to bring a guest to work out just ONCE, they charge FIFTEEN DOLLARS for one workout pass. This is INSANE when other gyms charge $2 - $5 for a day pass and those other gyms include a basketball court, sauna, hot tub, pool, and WORKING SHOWERS. This place doesn't even have ab machines LOL...

It's also marketed as "Black-owned" but the owner is a WHITE ITALIAN WOMAN who capitalized on the BLM protests to make her clientele and money.

I would avoid this if your goal is a good workout, shower, or sauna session. Not to mention if you expect to develop abs.

The employees, environment, and equipment make this place a 4/5, but the lies, lack of equipment, and promised amenities make this place a -20/5.

UPDATE: STILL NO HEATED SHOWERS OR WORKING SUANA AS OF 6/16/24 WENT TO TEST THE SHOWERS AND THERE WAS BROKEN GLASS INSIDE THE SHOWERS

Since 2020 the gym has been amazing for my fitness journey, though the gym no longer has the same owner from when i started, the gym just keeps improving for the community. The community close and friendly with each other and everyone continues to thrive to be the best they can, accomplishing their goals individual. The dumbbell room continues to be my favorite room with the new machines recently added. If you haven’t yet, checking it out is a must.

Amazing gym love that it’s 24 hours. The equipment is top of the line with a variety of different brands like Panatta, Atlantis, Gymleco, and many more. The powerlifting Paradise has tons of bars to choose from with endless weight wether their Kg, LB, or Bumpers. Overall the aesthetics with the black walls and great lighting makes the gym look amazing.

Iron Built gym is one of the premiere powerlifting gyms in the area. The team there has created a well-appointed practice as you'd play environment. Competition level racks and weights compliment platforms one would see on meet day. The gym also hosts meets right onsite, which is a big plus. There's a good sense of gym citizenship, too. Folks use only what they have to, all users put stuff away when they're done and everyone wipes down the gear when they're done, too. That matters. The staff are all lifters and the world-class Powerlifter Ray Williams, of all people, manages the place, extending the credibility of the place. There's tons of accessory equipment, cardio gear as well and even Olympic Lifting gear, so it's not only about Powerlifting...that's just their focus. The owner Ken has heavily invested in this place being something special and here in 2024 it's come together great. I was done with the chain "fitness center" and meat market gym atmosphere and wanted to be around the powerlifting scene again. When I found out about this place in late 2021 the retooling just started in earnest. It's been over a year and I like what I see. This is home, now.

My husband and I just moved and tried 2 other gyms and they didn't feel right so we kept looking and we found Iron Built!!

As soon as we walked in we were welcomed and it felt like home! Everyone has been so welcoming and encouraging!

The equipment is great and they have everything you would want from a powerlifting gym!

They are opening two private areas. One for women to grow that peach in private!! The other for personal training.

Just so happy we found a good gym that feels like home!!

I have been going here for a few months working out with a trainer. It is a great experience relative to chain gyms. It is not crowded, so I can get on the equipment that I want and focus my training. The people are very friendly and supportive. The equipment is very good quality. I work in the Fan, and it is easy to get there as it is right of the Atlee exit.

This is hands down the best gym in the area. The gym is run by amazing people that will not only help you with anything they possibly can but will motivate you to be the best you. The environment they have created in this gym is unlike anything you will get anywhere else. They build relationships with the people that are in there constantly. IronBuilt is a fantastic, locally owned gym. The owners are friendly, and lead by example, training daily in their own facility. The equipment is top notch, competitive grade. I personally use the Rogue barbells daily, and it makes the difference. They have another local business with them, GymFlo. It’s a solid community of driven members. I highly recommend.

My training partner and I had an awesome time training here on a one-day pass.
Truly, an old-school, hardcore gym. Clean, organized setup of equipment. Quality equipment for any workout. Two deadlift platforms with chalk access readily available.
Nice and clean bathrooms, ideal workout music and an all-around great atmosphere.
I only wished I lived closer. I’d join in a hot minute. Looking forward to training there again.
