I called the facility the day before to inquire about a day pass to use the basketball courts for my kid who plays for her school. I was told that Sunday the courts would be open and available for use from 8:00 am to 10:30 am. We drove the 20 minutes to get there and arrived at 9:00 am, filled out all information for the day pass, spoke with both employees at the front desk and notified them we needed the basketball courts, and borrowed a basketball. We were given instructions to where the court was located and when we walked down to that area, there was an entire men’s basketball game going on full court with a whole stand full of spectators and other players. No baskets were available for us to practice. We went back to the front desk and notified them that the courts had a game and THEN were told, “oh yeah, they won’t be available until 11:00 am if we wanted to come back then.” This is terrible service and communication throughout the entire process. Wasted morning. I will NEVER go back nor recommend anyone to their facility.****Update, spoke with management following this post and they did an incredible job at helping to fix the issue we encountered. Thank you to the management team, we will definitely given it another shot.

Great location and friendly staff! My kids are taking swim classes here for some time now. The facility is well kept for the most. I deducted 1 star bc the heater in the pool wasn't working and kids complained about the water temp they were not expecting it to be cold. I like the variety of programs Jeff rouse offers overall. I recommend visiting if you have not yet or are new to the area.

Edited to 5/5 for responsive reply to my post! You have a staff that cares when they're posting replies Sunday after 10:00 PM. Thank you!!

Wonderful facility. Wendy, Jeff, Caroline and the rest of the staff are great. Facility is clean, well equipped, comfortable and a joy...except for swim meets on some weekends. At that time it is less than enjoyable. Food is allowed in the pool area and kids run wild in the locker rooms. I operated athletic clubs for 30+ years and overall this is operated very well. Well done!

The membership is very misleading if you are hoping to use the wellness and/or recreation pools and have a day job. When we signed up we assumed the classes occurring in the wellness pool were seasonal (when we asked we were told we would just have to check the schedule online) but they’re apparently continual so the wellness pool is unavailable after 3/3:30 during the week. The aerobics classes in the rec pool are great, but in the evening 2-3 lanes are closed for aerobics and the remaining are closed for swim lessons even though the online schedule implies available/open lanes. Sure the competition pool is open if you want to only swim laps in chilly water, but not if you got the membership with the intention of doing low impact walking etc. They didn’t seem to mind when we canceled, didn’t apologize or even try to retain us as customers. Not a great experience.

My experience with this place was a disaster. The general manager had it out for me. Didn’t like that I would workout with members from the gym. There were kids that play on my teams that I coach that I help out in our area and the general manager kicked me out for helping the youth. Mind you, I’m not the only one in the gym helping kids. The week before I had her called the cops on someone for putting there hands on me and they were the opposite color. She was mad I called cops and wanted to press charges. So therefore, in retaliation she kicked me out her first time seeing me in the gym since last week… (race and discrimination plays a big role in this)

ESM please hire someone that actually knows how to run a sports facility the size of the Rouse. Since the departure of most of the original management staff, the facility has turned into a CRAPFEST!!! Poorly maintained gym equipment, new replacement equipment never calibrated, poorly managed volleyball league, horrible customer service from staff and management, and the basketball court looks like it hasn't seen a mop in a year.

I have been a member of the Rouse Center since 2021. I absolutely love all the Water Aerobics classes that they offer and all of the instructors are so amazing. My niece and nephew took swim lessons here and Aideen the coordinator went above and beyond to make sure they were placed in the right class with instructors that met their individual needs. I highly recommend the Rouse Center to anybody that I meet because it is such a family, friendly environment!! Such a friendly front desk staff too, especially Wendy.

Judith Thomas has been my swim instructor for a few months now and I am beyond pleased to have her as my instructor. She has helped me grow by leaps and bounds in my swimming skills and has helped me increase my confidence in the water. If you're looking for a swim instructor to help you take your swimming skills to the next level, pick Judith as your instructor. You'll be glad you did!

I enrolled my son in private swim lessons at the Jeff Rouse for this summer. We have had excellent communication with his swim instructor, Ms. Judith, and she has been an absolute gem for him. In just over 2 cumulative hours of lessons she has him floating and demonstrating some basic skills. I have every confidence that she will get him to be a “public pool swim test” capable kid by the end of their time together.

Additionally, for my experience as a whole, getting signed up through the facility’s website was very easy, we were put in touch with his swim instructor directly, the front desk was friendly and helpful when I came in to pay for the sessions in advance, and the facility itself is great. We’ve had so much rain recently that it’s nice to know the weather won’t jeopardize his ability to get a lesson or close the pool down.

Kudos to the team, and I can’t wait to see him cutting through the water like a mini-pro!

Disappointing Experience and Poor Customer Service

I signed up for a membership specifically to access discounted private swim lessons, which I made clear at signup. I wasn’t told there was a waitlist until a few days later, after I submitted my lesson request online. I asked for a general timeline—not an exact date—but got no response.

After following up and copying the General Manager, I finally received a rude phone call from the Aquatics Director, Aideen, who barked at me as soon as I answered the phone. She quickly changed her tone when I stood my ground, said she was “part-time” to justify the poor communication, and promised to follow up with a timeline—but never did.
Another week passed and I was charged for another month of membership—with still no update.

When I sent a professional email seeking clarity, the response was unexpectedly snarky, essentially dismissing my concerns and wishing me luck at another facility. Rather than addressing the issue or trying to retain me as a customer, their tone was unprofessional and disrespectful.

If they couldn’t provide a timeline, they should have said so immediately to let me cancel before being charged again. The entire experience has reflected a clear lack of professionalism, care, and respect for people’s time. This is not what I expected when I signed up.

It's ok but I wish they were open 24 hrs 10 pm it's too early, and my kid goes to bed by 9 so I don't have time to go because of that schedule plus the swing teams using the pool and it's fine but many times people we can't use the pool or parking spots because they are full.

We just participated in a Virginia State Championship swim meet, and I was incredibly disappointed with this facilities handling of the event. I’ve been part of this event for 25 years, and this was the worst I’ve seen.

1. They didn’t set up the pool as prescribed and then stubbornly would not change. We know the configuration we desired was practical because we used it in 2019
2. One of the older guards should be removed from any public facing job. During the championship finals, all of the coaches were standing behind a rope along the side of the pool to watch their swimmers. The rope ensured a path should a guard or official need it. He told the referee he could not start the meet until all of the coaches moved. To where? Fortunately, the request was so ridiculous, the referee was forced to ignore it.
3. All the kids were coughing and their eyes were burning. I felt a burning sensation in my eyes also. A google search indicated that it may have been from an exposure to chlorine gas. I have no way to know for sure if that was the problem, so I can only report the uncomfortable environment in the pool area.

It was sad to see such a great public amenity run so poorly. It was built for the purpose we used it. Hopefully that can improve the level of customer service they provide to the public.

I had a swim meet at this pool, and despite it being a great time, the pool itself was very dated and janky. Credit where it is due to the staff who tried to make all run smoothly, but the blocks were shaky and old, the touchpads falling apart, the deck crowded, the sound system glitchy and the lack of space for everyone. Hopefully it was a one off event, and i hope that the swim center will improve before next time!

Very nice facility, HORRIBLE natatorium air conditioning quality during large meets. We were at a meet over July 10th weekend and the humidity and air temp was beyond miserable. The Jeff Rouse Swim Center comprises an 8 lane 50 meter by 25 yard competition pool with bulkhead, a six lane 25 yard warm up pool, and a child instruction pool. The competition pool is deep. The blocks do not have starting wedges. All stadium seating is chairs with back, with capacity around a thousand. Acoustics are poor.
The pool and locker rooms are well maintained. This facility is ideal for small meets up to meets with a thousand entries, either short course or long course.

I’ve been a member at the Rouse Center since it first opened and I’ve watched it go downhill every year. The young teenagers in the gym are appalling and management doesn’t do anything to mediate the situation. These kids come in wearing the most inappropriate attire, never keep their shoes on, curse, talk about women in the gym, and rough house one another. This gym has always had elderly members and how they behave can be dangerous to the other members. I will say some of the Staff does work hard and is easy to talk to, but Management has got to get a hold on these teens and their behavior, gym etiquette, and length of time they spend there sitting/socializing. I’m glad they have a safe space to be in, but not at the expense of the other members. Additionally, the equipment is in such a mess… everything is ripped and broken, off balance, etc. For paying the same amount of money per month as One Life (actually more), it’s quite a shame.

I recommend an enforced dress code, anyone under the age of 18 not permitted in the weight room unless a parent is present, code of conduct enforced, and a time limited of 3 hours daily permitted in the weight room.

I would not recommend this place for many reasons. First the place lacks cleanliness. I have noticed that people that work there and members always come down and get reinfected with covid. That is why there is such a big turn over in staff . The place is very mismanaged and the availability of the needed facilities for disabled persons is non existent. I happen to need to swim in their tiny wellness pool. They have limited hours to use. It is used for rentals and classes. The schedule means nothing You can go there when the pool is supposed to be available and it's closed because lifeguards don't show up. When they show up they have 3 sitting in the main area one monitors both pools and the other two sit at the desk playing video games on their phones and blasting their what they consider music over the loudspeaker for everyone to entertain themselves. They have according to them a stipulation in their agreement that you must sign of 60 days notice before your stop paying. Quite frankly there are many choices in the area that offer good service and conditions and equipment without the aforementioned problems.

They lost my child on day 1 of camp by not keeping an eye the kids. The instructors are not friendly and don’t interact with your child at all. The youth director also, blamed my child for going missing and didn’t take responsibility for the situation when they couldn’t find my child. Overall a really nice place. The only problem with the pool is that it's a competition pool so pretty much 3 out of 4 weekends a month it's completely booked up with swim meets. The recreational pool will be open sometimes during meets but there's only like 8 lanes so it can fill up quick. I'll probably keep my yearly membership (even though they just increased the price) because it's a great option when outdoor pools are closed and I need to train, but it's getting hard to justify it to myself. The gym, locker room, and activities/clubs they have are pretty awesome.

Prob the busiest facility within 20mile radius. If you're into packed gyms and packed pools struggling to find a piece of equipment or swim lane, then this is your place. Otherwise go somewhere else. Recommend dedicating one section to paying customers. Not sure what I’m paying for if I can’t ever use the pool.

Such an amazing establishment that rewind by bad Management.

A few months in now & I was lucky to use the deep water once. But we all remember during the tour time they told you the pool is yours ( Yea right )so my advice is to Hit the church a few Sundays & pray to God for an open line during your visit.

Don’t be shocked if they walk into you and ask you to leave because the line is closed.

How do I trust a lifeguard who is not in the mood to listen?

lying to your face & when you spot him he refused to give his name.

The attitude is horrible at the pool section (lifeguards look unhappy) so you will feel it back on you.

Promised to take your consideration to avoid such behavior in the future. again nothing happened

Not a single form of apology for the unprofessional behavior of the super golden lifeguard boy who is not trained to work for the public sector ( zero training ).

In the end, so many things you may notice during your visit & so many concern, but it's shame to know nothing will change, meantime the swimming team are happy that's all that matters.

This is one of the worst establishments I have ever done business with since we PCS’d here to NOVA eleven months ago. As one other reviewer said- Jeff Rouse Swim and Sport Center are only after your money. This is not a family friendly center where families are their core priority. We had our son registered in their Soccer and Swim programs- which were both a misuse of our time and money. The Soccer instructor primarily had the kids age (3+) doing independent play, there wasn’t any structure, nor any real soccer curriculum being taught. Regarding the swim lessons for our daughter, the swim instructor was a new teacher each week and taught the same exercises each week (which involved singing around in a circle). Never did any of the teachers move on with some sort of age proper curriculum.

I had a very nice conversation with the General Manager after several weeks of observing these programs and addressed my concerns. Instead of keeping my account in freeze mode I wanted to terminate my membership with the center. He understood and agreed and credited us for the remaining weeks of both programs, and we thought all was well and done.

Well, starting February we started receiving monthly charges. However still living bi-costal, dealing with 2 kids in college, covid ripping through our intermediate and extended family and winter storms- we didn’t notice the charges until April. I called several times and emailed trying to reach someone. I didn’t receive any return messages nor replies to my emails. I finally drove there and spoke to Christy (in accounting) directly. She said she would investigate my situation.

During that wait time they actually charged us for another month (May) before closing our account out by June. Christy mentioned the GM (General Manager) did remember having a conversation with me about wanting to drop the soccer and swim programs, but he didn’t remember discussing discontinuing indefinitely (obviously selective memory). Therefore, they would not be able to credit us for the 4 months they charged us. I told her we couldn’t afford to pay for months of services we did not receive- that again we are a military family with 5 children, and that we are a one income household. Her heartless reply was “so are a lot of families in this area”. So essentially, my situation meant nothing to her. This is a ruthless, cold-hearted, inhumane person and center- that takes money from hard-working families and gives you nothing in return. Jeff Rouse Swim and Sport Center has zero integrity and loathsome customer service.

Please take your business elsewhere.

Our family has been going to this gym for about 4 years now. They have Jr. Fitness training starting at 11 years old that teaches children about health fitness and how to properly use the exercise equipment. 3 Olympic sized pool and tons of classes to suit everyone's needs. I just wish they had a sauna.

This is such an amazing fitness center! Before even going inside, the outdoor athletic fields are amazing. Inside there is a snack bar with many healthy options and a few less healthy, too! (soda, fries, etc - and, they're GOOD!) For those with children, there are before and after school options with bus transportation to/from the schools (check for which schools and availability). The yoga/zumba/step aerobics/spin class room is beyond adequate. The fitness room complete with free-weights, cardio machines, and more is very well equipped. The basketball courts are great. Scheduling allows for indoor soccer, volleyball, and other activities at pre-scheduled times. A heated (90°) wellness pool is available. Check scheduling as The Rouse Center partners with 'Little Fish Swimming' for one of the several options for swim lessons. Then there's the main attraction - the pool! Check scheduling as there are periods of training and an occasional swim meet. Otherwise, the water is available for individual use in addition to various fitness classes and groups in the water; and there's a "kiddie area"! There are also lockers and equipment available. The locker rooms, showers, and bathroom areas area always clean. There are 3 or 4 Family restrooms, too. The Staff! - AMAZING.

So let me get this straight if a family of 3 goes to the Jeff Rouse center and spend $45 for a day pass they do not need to wear a mask and have access to the entire facility. But a swim family of 3 pays $9 per event for 8 events = $72 and you are not allowed in the building in 12 degree temps...makes perfect sense (to liberals)!

It's an ok gym. Great for indoor / off-season swimming. Has basketball courts and a lackluster child care area. One Life in Stafford is a better gym but lacks the other features like pool.

The Rouse Center's Before & After Care program is wonderful. My 10-year-old daughter's experiences were always positive, and spending time at the Rouse with the friends she made was always something that she looked forward to. Eddie and his staff were always professional, courteous, and made me feel that I was leaving my daughter in a safe place, cared for by people who cared. I cannot recommend them enough. If you're looking for a place to care for your child(ren) while you go to and return from work, look no further. I am available to further discuss this review with anyone who would like to hear more.
