Alas poor LA Fitness, I knew you well.... The gym closed forever on Dec 1, 2023, so the closest LA Fitness is now the dank cave on Glebe road. It's really tragic that the franchise couldn't make a go of it in this location, which had great machines, a superb pool, friendly staff, and just not enough membership for the company to keep up maintenance on the machines. I get it, no members = no money put back into the facility, but a great location surrounded by high rent apartments should have been able to do better. I blame the marketing or lack thereof.

I appreciate that they have a nice pool and hot tub but that’s where the positives end. In the two years I’ve been going here, only once has there been a working Stairmaster. At least half the cardio equipment is out of order with no efforts to make repairs. The locker rooms are nasty with no ventilation and major mold and odor issues. So much potential.
They’re closing for good on December 1. Arlington Now says they’re planing to remodel it and open up a higher-end chain so we’ll see. In the meantime, good riddance…

This super zero for having a rude and unhelpful person answers the phone and claims that he is the general Manger of the place and when you ask about his name, he simply hang up the phone!! By calling again, a nice person who is running the place "Denise" declared that "Tim" is just sales manger.
They need to focus on customer service and monitor such behaviors!

A lot of cardio machines have been down and stay down, stairs masters, treadmills. Etc. I don’t believe their is any intention of repairing them.
Although their power training equipment are mostly all in tact and operating well. The Service is friendly and the workers are helpful with any assistance needed. The sauna could be cleaned a more frequently at least on a daily basis mid day or so. I don’t think it gets cleaned based on the constant odor smell every visit I’ve made. This gym has the potential to be a great LA fitness like other locations If the upkeep could be executed properly and in a timely manner.

I have been coming here for a few weeks now, and this gym has everything that I need! First thing is that it's enormous. You can't tell from the outside, but the gym is quite large and it has pretty much every type of exercise equipment that you could imagine. They even have a huge swimming pool for members to use. I mainly stick to just a few machines, as well as. The treadmill for running. Some o the other machines that I use are for chest, upper arms like biceps, and abs of course. I especially like the fact that they open super early at 5:00am which is great because I like to get my workout done first thing in the day. The only thing that they don't have is a boxing ring! I plan on continuing my membership for as long as I remain In the area.

I went to visit the Clark Street location today as I've done many times before. I was stopped at check in and advised that I would have to pay a $10 fee as I did not have multi state access. I explained that this happened once before and I thought that this had been corrected. There was two people at the desk the person with the bald head which I assume might be a supervisor joins the conversation. I asked him for his name as he did not have a name tag. He said why do you need my name. I advised that I would need it so that when I speak with the Corporate office I can reference whom I spoke with. I mentioned to him that any professional would not mind giving their name. He refused to give me his name but offered the number for Corporate as if he didn't care if I called. He told me, go for it and tell them I didn't give you my name. I told him that he was not professional and that this type of black on black crime has to stop. He continued to challenge me so I told him he was ignorant, he continued to be unprofessional so I made sure he heard me call him ignorant all the way to the elevator. I am not sure what is happening in Virginia specifically Crystal City as this is the 2nd situation where another black male has been downright ignorant on the job. I carry myself as a respectful black male and I expect to get an acceptable level of service. I feel that these person's feel as if they can give men of the same race whatever level of service they want. Well I will not support a company that allows their staff to be downright ignorant. I will be cancelling my membership tomorrow. I've been with Bailey's then LA Fitness for over 25 years
I'm done. Really you don't give out your name. The sad part is that he is most likely the manager. My visit was at around 6:15pm on 10/11/23 management check the cameras. I called back after leaving and expressed to the no name person that he needs to grow up and be a professional and stop giving bad service as well as black on black crime. He asked me if that was a threat. How ignorant! This poor customer service is wrong no matter what the race.

Almost ALL cardio machines are broken upstairs. Trainers have attitude when you're already using the equipment they are trying to use. Weights and dumbbells are scattered around the gym. Weight lifting machines and benches don't work properly and can easily injure someone, yet they are still avaliable to use. Majority of the time no one puts away their weights. Over a year and the only improvement is the very tiny wipes that replaced the spray bottles and paper towels.

I come in every morning at 5am. A nice young man is always there on time, he greets me and is very kind, I believe his name is jay. He was helpful on my billing account questions. He assured that I was getting billed correctly. He was also willing to show me a few work out machines to reach my goals. This is my favorite gym. I wish they can fix more of their equipment. The customer service is wonderful, but the gym itself need a lot of work.

Worst LA Fitness I have ever been to. Over 60% of cardio machines in the upper level are “scheduled for maintenance” they’ve been like this for the past year. This location needs new management.
No one re-racks their weights and it’s just a mess at this gym. I would not recommend anyone signing up at this location, the one down the street next to Giant doesn’t have as many amenities but I would 100% recommend it over this location. At least their equipment works and people have enough respect to put weights back.

Edit: I can back, originally left this 2 months ago, everything is still broken and there are only 6 functional treadmills and it’s a 20 minute limit

I wanted to look at the club to decide whether to join. But in order to work out there, I have to join. The “Free Guest Pass” is a scam to force you to join. Update:
I counted over 15 treadmills not working yesterday (not counting other cardio equipment). I don't tend to use the restrooms since I live nearby, but wow... they really need some cleaning. I go there for convenience to where I live, but this place needs some major maintenance. I also noticed that another nearby LA fitness has a lot more fitness classes (1 mile away)... I wonder if this location just gave up and they will plan on just combining into the location in Glebe St.
Same as other expressed. The location has very old equipment and the cardio machines are on maintenance very frequently. I go 2-3 times a week for weights and it's fine, but nothing spectacular. They also barely have any fitness classes and the ones they have are either zumba or a once per week yoga class. They have a spinning room but no classes at all.

On one hand, I love this gym. Very spacious, lots of weights and machines, and all of the people who workout there are really cool.
But also, half the cardio equipment is broken, there are always a couple machines broken, and the sauna is broken multiple times per month. The hot tub is closed for cleaning at peak hours...... why on earth would you choose to do that? You choose when the cleaning cycle is. Kind of a pattern here. I agree what most of what is being said here. This place is SOO poorly maintained. Some machines stay broken for six months or more. Some of the equipment has simply been removed when it breaks because it is so old they cannot get the parts. And these machines are never replaced with newer models.
As someone else said, not a single piece of new equipment has been added to this facility since it opened 14 years ago.
I have been a member since the day it opened, when it was state-of-the-art. Now it is anything but.
I was told in September that 50% of the machines would be replaced in October. To date, nothing has been replaced.
Also, half the dumbbells are missing completely, members frequently do not replace weights (you have to hunt all over the gym to find what you need -- if you can even find it), paper towels are frequently on the floor. Yes, they replaced the carpeting with tile but that was only after people were tripping on the loose carpet threads. No gym staff are on the weight room level to monitor the situation.
I am looking for a new gym and hope to find one as conveniently located as this one. I do not recommend anyone joining this facility, despite its reasonable cost. You get (maybe not) what you pay for!

This LA Fitness has what you need, but definitely needs work. Been a member for close to 3 months now and about half of the cardio machines have been “scheduled for service” since I’ve been coming here.
There are no stair masters because they’re all scheduled for maintenance.
Some of the weight machines are broken and you don’t find out until you go to use them.
A lot of the equipment is really on its last leg. The weight room floor also smells horrible.
The bathrooms are extremely dirty and smell pretty awful most of the time.
The best part of this gym is the cost and the ability to bring guests every time you come to workout.
If you have the money, it’s worth it to spend a bit more for a different gym if they don’t work on these issues.

For a LA Fitness with the best pool in town, this is just absolutely unacceptable. How hard is it to hit each of these with a pressure washer after the gym closes? If this wasn’t slightly better than the Lincolnia one, it would have 1 star. Extremely frustrated with this LA Fitness. About 40% of the equipment is either broken or missing. The benches, stairmasters, and other machines have been broken for im pretty sure about a year. And there are dumbbells that have been missing and not replaced in that same timeframe. Lat pull down machines are zip tied together as if that fixes anything. You can’t find any attachments for the cable machines. The pool I’m sure hasn’t been cleaned in months. On top of all of this, the location closed for “renovations” not too long ago and all they did was rearrange the broken equipment. If people are paying to use this gym then you need to ensure the equipment is available as well as working.

I belong to LA Fitness because my gym requirements are basic and there are convenient locations when I travel. (I’m not looking for Pilates or towel service.) The Arlington facility is my home location, and I was shocked that they were actually soliciting online reviews today. The state of this facility has gone from “bad” to “at what point do you have to let people out of their contracts”? Today fully HALF of the cardio machines were out of service. (During the pandemic they just put the broken ones between the functioning ones with signs saying it was for social distancing, which was kind of hilarious when everyone knows they’re just broken.) About 1/3 of the weight machines are broken or badly rusted or have ripped-up padding. The worst is the reclining hamstring curl: They’ve got one unit, everyone is always circling it like a shark, and it’s falling apart.
Over the years equipment has gone missing and NEVER gets replaced. There has been no 30 lb. barbell for at least six years. They replaced it once after I pestered them for months, and then it went missing again, and they told me that members inevitably break the 30 lb. barbell so they’re not going to replace it anymore. I’ve worked out in a million gyms in my adult life that all had at least one 30 lb. barbell, so I guess these super-specific equipment vandals work out only in Arlington, and instead of confronting the issue or repurchasing a $200 piece of standard equipment, LA Fitness wants to send them a very subtle message. As of last week, the stability balls are all AWOL. (Sometimes they let their fitness trainers hide equipment.) The gym has ONE pair of 7.5 lb. dumbbells and ONE (not even a pair) 12.5 lb. dumbbell.
Today all the paper towel dispensers were empty and trash cans overflowing, which happens a few times a month and seems like a bad idea given recent public health scares.
The staff here are friendly, and I like them, but they’ve told us they have no power to address these things. If anyone with ANY decision making power reads this, can you please stop in to the Arlington location and see if you find this acceptable? I wanted to take video today, but I didn’t want to violate the privacy of other gym members in the space. Throwing even a few thousand dollars at this problem would help a lot. I’m running out of creative ways to complete my workout.

WORST LA FITNESS IN AMERICA: Most La Fitnesses get knocked for having broken equipment, but this location always seems to have significantly more pieces out of service - both weights and cardio, than ANY other gym I’ve been to. The staff is okay, but rarely greet you coming in or out. The club actually stinks... like, has an odd odor to it. The biggest issue for me is there is no WiFi at this location (in 2021...seriously!?) To makes matters worse, the building has zero cell phone reception. This location also gets a 1/5 on cleanliness (see aforementioned odor). Lastly, they DO NOT enforce mask mandates. People simply walk in with their mask and quite literally take them off once past the front desk.
Bottom line: If you’re just looking for a place with weights and aren’t particularly adverse to contracting covid, this is your place. If not, you’ll probably want to look elsewhere.
Update: As of 12/15/2021: more than half of the cardio machines have been out of order for MONTHS and there are roaches (photos attached)
1/9/2022: Not that it matters much at this point— BUT as of today the elevators are past inspection (photo of expired cert attached). I only know this because the door momentarily failed to open as I was going between the first and second floor. (When you’re stuck in an elevator you tend to check these things..)
I suppose things are just what they are with this gym. Member safety, cleanliness, facility upkeep… are simply nonexistent. Be sure to ask these complaints and others like mine posted here when they’re trying to sell you on joining.
11/6/2022: DO NOT BE MISLEAD BY THE RECENT FIVE-STAR REVIEWS!!! They gym has been asking members to leave positive reviews of new or prospective members in an attempt to balance out authentic gym-goer reviews.
A tip for any prospective members: Make note of the broken equipment and [lack of] cleanliness during your tour. This WILL be the permanent of your new gym facility for the duration of your membership. Management has been promising improvements and repairs “within the next three months” for YEARS now!!! They aren’t happening. See other reviews. LA Fitness is also one of the most difficult and litigious gym franchises to leave. Again— see others’ reviews.
To current members: I would recommend flooding the official LA Fitness social media comment sections on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to call attention to the issue. It is apparently clear that this club’s management and/or their superiors are ill equipped to resolve the ongoing issues.

I was recently asked to write a review of LA Fitness health club located in Crystal City. My family and I have been members there for more than 11 year and are frequent users, 4 – 5 times per/week. As I have been a member of a gym/ health club since I was 10 years old, I think I can offer some comparative perspective. I can say that like any other gym, there are both good and bad. So here is my opinion on the pros and cons of the club.
Pros:
Price is very reasonable. You would be hard pressed to find a better value.
Parking is super convenient. You can park two hours for free in the underground garage.
Variety of equipment. There is adequate resistance machines, cardio machines, and free weights. The facility also has a swimming pool, basketball courts, a cycling room, and a large exercise classroom.
Appearance: The facility recently underwent a renovation that included new flooring.
Cleanliness: The staff works to keep the place clean and for the most part is successful.
Locker rooms and showers are adequate and includes a sauna.
Staff is friendly and helpful.
Cons:
Equipment maintenance: In the years that I have been a member, I do not think they have added or replaced one piece of equipment. While you always expect some equipment to be down for maintenance, the age of the equipment causes downtime more frequently. Additionally, some machines have not had padding replaced for years. I have also found that weight keys are sometimes missing.
Towel service: We pay and additional small fee per/month to have a towel. Often, there are no towels available. Recently, when I asked for a towel, I was handed a washcloth.
Oversight and supervision of the weight and machine rooms. I have to say that the gym etiquette at LA Fitness is the worst I have ever seen. People will tie up several stations to superset or take certain dumbbell weights and keep them for hours. People rarely rerack weights.
Overall, LA Fitness is an adequate gym that offers a variety of equipment. Price and convenience are the best features. More staff presence in the weight area and newer equipment would make this place a lot better.

I'm a member and travel to many locations around the country, this is the worst I've visited. Half the cardio equipment is waiting for service, the other half probably haven't been cleaned or maintained for a year. Didn't find anything usable. The strength level is better, but still nowhere close to the standard it should be. Most of the machines stick and have caked on dust and sweat. If they pay anyone to maintain these they're getting ripped off, if they don't pay anyone than that's even worse. 2 stars because it was close to our hotel and had enough to get something done, but will not visit again based on this experience.

Horrible service staff employed by careless management that doesn’t give 2 cents about their customer and how they feel.
The gym requires 30 day notice to cancel, but don’t follow the rules themselves when give min 30 day notice period when shutting the gym down for renovation. Additionally, if you want to complain or quit you have to talk to the operations manager and oh btw the operations manager quit (wonder why) and they have never ever hired anyone in that spot.

I was pretty happy when I first discovered this location but it has multiple consistent extenuating issues, such as the sauna not being hot, shower cleanliness, towels not available, lack of good management and generally poor customer service. I frequent their dry sauna and it is consistently under temperature. Otherwise, I see an AMAZING personal trainer, named James, who is currently about the only competent employee at this location.

I like LA fitness in general for Zumba classes and swimming. This one was good location and convenient for me, but I had to cancel my membership. My concern is, they don’t accept canceling on the phone or online, so for one month I was too busy to go , especially after my working hours and I had a newborn baby, and I paid for one month without going any day, so today in my weekend I went to Cancel my membership and guess what?! It was so easy check chak done! So why they couldn’t do this on phone and let me pay $44.99 for no reason!

Not sure what the owners are spending the membership fees on, but it's not upkeep of the gym. The unacceptable amount of broken equipment and extreme disorganization of the facility have already been noted in other reviews. The only saving grace this gym had was the fact that they had the only swimming pool in the area. However, the pool has been down for maintenance for the last 2 months and there is no get well date in sight. I can't think of any reason to stay here now and I doubt anyone else can either.
Update to my February 2022 review:
It's that time of year again - the temperatures outside are going up and so are the temperatures in the gym. I don't look forward to going to this gym when it's hot out because the owners do not adjust the thermostats inside to keep things from getting uncomfortable. Again, rather than pinch pennies by letting things get all sweaty and gross, put the customer first and keep the temperatures in the gym constant no matter what things are like outside.
One other small peeve: it would be nice if the owners unlocked all of the unusable phone lockers more than once a month so that customers have somewhere to put their phones - which they are required to bring in since the owners are too cheap to issue tags for keychains.

This location continues to be the ‘armpit’ of LA Fitness. I recently visited the gym after a few months and found the sauna door still broken from months ago. Also, on this visit, I noticed the shower curtains in the men’s locker room were moldy, and the lockers had not been cleaned or wiped down in some time as a layer of dust was visible on most of them (photo example attached). The sauna smelled terrible, along with the sauna door that had to be forced open just to enter and exit. It appears this location just stopped cleaning after COVID and takes no pride in its appearance or upkeep. I, personally, will pay a few extra dollars for a gym membership elsewhere where you don’t feel ‘dirty’ just trying to shower and change your clothes.
Furthermore, the staff just sits on their personal cellphones at the front desk while you are waiting to be helped or checked in. LA Fitness, you have to take accountability and fix this!!

As a member for several years now, I watch this gym’s management rake-in years of COVID19 membership income, while re-investing NOTHING to provide working equipment and hygienic facilities —the toilets, urinals, bathrooms, sauna, and cardio equipment are consistently in disrepair and visibly dirty. Good location and garage parking warrant the single star.

I've cancelled membership at many gyms over the years and my only unpleasant experience has been at this LA Fitness.
I called to cancel and was informed I needed to come in between specific hours to speak with the individual in charge of memberships. I did as requested and despite her attempts convince me not to cancel, I was persistent and was finally informed that my membership had been cancelled.
One month later, my bank account was charged monthly dues and an annual fee. When I called seeking clarification, the individual in charge of memberships became combative and attempted to gaslight me by telling me we'd never spoken.
I understand mistakes happen but the response to their mistake left me wondering what type of training LA Fitness is providing their membership team and whether they actively encourage this behavior.

Many of the machines stay broke for weeks or the cardio equipment gets off balanced or is un-calibrated. The hours are significantly less than the competitors and they reduced them in the recent days which is crazy because the pandemic is winding down therefore it should be back to normal hours (so one would think). You have to validate parking it’s only 2 hours which it should at least be increased to 3 or more because by the time I make my way from the parking lot, change and stretch You have an hour to workout and shower, and change before the hefty parking rate incurs. This gym can for sure be much better along the line of having better classes such as body combat or body pump but it’s seems to be on a never ending rotation of spin, Zumba, and yoga. Hopefully they change for the better soon.
Update:
With all its problems another one was added with the fact there is no kids club at this location with the amount of people in this facility they managed to tell me that this is due to the lack of members smh.

Last time I was in the gym was march 2020, then covid hit. Understandably, they closed. I was on an annual plan since I had been a member since 1999. When they reopened they contacted me saying they wanted my payment. I told them I was not comfortable going there and work was up in the air, so I was not going to give them money to not go to the gym because of covid. They tried to say everything would be fine soon. So almost 2 years later everyone can still get omnicron very easily. So they cancelled my membership of 20+ years. Now they have the nerve to send me promotional emails to rejoin by paying an initiation fee plus monthly fees that would have been much more than what I was paying annually. LA fitness does not care about customer service, their customer's health and safety or retaining customers. It's all about the new cheddar coming in.

Literally THE WORST gym ever. All the equipments are dirty, like they’ve never been cleaned. Aerobic salon is so dirty with lots of hairs on the floor. It’s really disgusting. The pool was closed since 1.5 months ago since I signed up and no staff knows when they would be opening again. Most treadmills are broken and half of downstairs equipments are out of service. You have to walk around to find one that works. Mask is not required and alcohol/sanitizers to clean the equipments are empty MOST of the times. Lastly, the manager Abby is really rude, you would find that out if you talk to her for only one minute. Don’t waste your money! RUN!

I stand by the one star. If staff wasn't nice and the Zumba class wasn't so fun, then I would give it zero stars. LITERALLY almost every machine has an out of order note. Fine if you want free wieghts (hahaha) the benches are broken too. All the equipment is rusty.
I should have taken pictures but the comment pictures are accurate. Bad equipment that you cannot use. It is literally not worth $5 a month. The zumba class is fun I love Ana. I cancelled my membership today with very little pain after I walked in tried to use the treadmill (all broken), then the elliptical (all broken if not in use), the stair stepper (all broken), and even the elliptical varients were broken too. I was trying to give people space and not use the machine next to them but ironnically all of them were broken too. I gave up and rowed for 10 minutes. Then attempted to use the wieghts and the benches were broken. I then tried the wieght machines and serval were BROKEN. You see the trend its a BROKEN gym.
When I was fed up and wanted to cancel...I went straight to the guy at the front desk who looked at my ID and cancelled my membership on the spot. He was very kind and took care of it. I will not be billed anymore and I still can use the gym until Feb. Overall, that expereince was not bad. I do not relate to the theft comments, I always keep my valuables with me and if I leave something in the lockeroom it is just a jacket with no money, valuables, or keys. I will update if they still bill me.

WORST GYM IN AMERICA. If I could give a zero rating I would.
If you’re looking for a gym that has half of its machine working and half “needing service” then this is the gym for you. I’ve been a member for 6 months now and the same 7 machines/treadmills have been out of service since I started. Not to forget all the other machines that “need service”. Worst gym ever. Do not waste your time or money!!!

For a morning workout, it’s okay. The front desk guy is always friendly, and it seems like the club has made its cleaning staff more visible. But weights still get left around and some of the weights machines are consistently old or not working right. Options like TRX and ropes aren’t available here. The last time I visited, the pool was out of order, and there is no easy way to find out when it’s in service again because no one answers the phone. The music is ridiculously annoying and loud enough that noise-cancelling headphones don’t block it out in some locations. Cell reception is bad, and there’s no wifi. My main gripe is that so few patrons wear masks; the club could do its members and employees a favor by getting ahead of county health recs. If I solely relied on this place for exercise, I’d be looking for a better gym—but as a place to go to once or twice a week, it’s fine.

There are some positives and a couple negatives with the South Clark LA Fitness gym. I enjoy the atmosphere the clientele, staff, indoor garage parking, of course the Swimming pool and sauna. On my wishlist would be a steamroom. Of course with the positives there are negatives the sauna could use extra attention along with the shower areas. There are limitations with the parking garage being 2 hours, I find it to be very offensive To do the main cleaning and not maintenance that's doing heavy is heavy usage or 30 minutes prior to exiting the gym. The main cleaning should be done after clientele has left. The cardio equipment could use updating But it is usable. Overall I'll rate this gym a little more than a is more than average.

All of the cardio machines are broken and no one cares. You are not allowed to cancel. You must speak with a manager first so that they can try to convince you to stay. After 3 separate trips to try to catch the manager - who never seemed to be there - I was finally given a form to send to headquarters in CA to end my membership when I was on the verge of a move only to find out later that I'm still getting billed because I signed a "contract." I guess the front desk guy told me to send in the cancellation form to placate me. He didn't think it was important to tell me I'll still be billed for 4 more months. Go to Planet Fitness instead.

I'm in town for this week and using this gym as my fitness and wellness base of operations.
Gym entrance was hard to find at first. It is in a corridor within the building complex.
Staff is very polite.
Other members are very polite.
Sauna gets hotter than my sauna back home (huge plus).
Only issue I really have is that members will take the sanitizer bottles with them to clean equipment. To me (ideally), members spray some paper towel at the designated station, and take the paper with them to wipe equipment.
I've also noticed that some sanitizer bottles are broken.
Thanks for the great service!
