They FORGOT to charge me for 2 months even though my linked bank account was properly funded to be able to pay my membership fee then sent me to collections for “not paying” when I had no idea that I was not being charged as I don’t check that account. This place just gets worse and more expensive

The outdoor pool is closed this season and only notified about a month ago. It has been in shambles for years and surprisingly they can't repair it during the cold months when it's closed. A very outdated facility that has horrible membership policies and you can't get out of it even when they close the outdoor pool. When I asked about it, I was told it's similar to when a treadmill breaks down. No, not really. They have many treadmills, but only 1 large outdoor pool that they haven't kept updated in many, many years. The indoor pool really isn't any nicer. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere!

This is the old Robious Family Fitness Center? They allow men in women's clothing in the ladies' locker room. Appalling.
I called because I was interested in buying a family membership for my son, his wife, and their child but was concerned when I read a review that they were allowing "transgender" men in the women's locker room. Nope. Not at all acceptable. I will shop around until I find a gym that doesn't prioritize men's feelings over women's privacy and safety. Shame on you!
My family had summer memberships and annual memberships throughout my kids' entire childhoods! They're all now adults and, unfortunately, my grandson will not be going there throughout his childhood as long as men are allowed in women's showers and changing areas.

Disappointing Customer Service and Arbitrary Fees

My experience with Midlothian Athletic Club (MAC) has been extremely disappointing due to poor customer service and what feels like arbitrary fee practices.

First, the "infrastructure fee" charged to members is assessed entirely at the gym's discretion. This lack of transparency leaves customers feeling exploited rather than valued.

Second, canceling a membership is unnecessarily complicated and inconvenient. After contacting the membership director via email to cancel, I was informed that I had to physically go to the gym to sign a non-renewal agreement—a process that seems outdated and customer-unfriendly.

Despite canceling my membership in person 30 days prior, MAC still charged me on my cancellation date (1/15/25). To make matters worse, access to the gym was only granted until February 1st instead of February 15th, meaning I essentially paid for two weeks of service I didn’t receive.

MAC needs to rethink these policies to align with modern customer service expectations. As a paying customer, I expected fair treatment and transparency, neither of which was provided. I cannot recommend this gym until significant improvements are made to their billing and membership processes.

I've been going to MAC for years and I really enjoy it. A lot is included in your membership (pool, gym, and classes). They also offer childcare which is nice but I've never used it. They recently went through a renovation and everything turned out well. My biggest knock on MAC is it's not the cleanest and things are always unorganized. I go when they first open and plates, bars and benches are everywhere. The gym is huge so I get that it won't be clean 24/7 but you would think they would go through a "close" process at night to clean and organize the gym for the next day.

I had high hopes for this gym. First when you sign the contract they make promises of waiving certain fees but never do. They will randomly charge you extra a month without notifying you. They have roaches in the in locker rooms. There’s no AC while working out and the equipment has not been updated. You pay so much a month and that money only goes back to the managers pockets. They also let random people in without making them pay. I would look for another gym because this gym is not worth the money AT ALL!

Amazing and beautiful facility. The machines are smooth and exceptional and they have anything you would want to use. No waiting and they are constantly cleaning the entire place. They have tennis, indoor and outdoor pools with a fun area for kids, racquetball courts, basketball, classes from spin to Pilates, saunas and large restrooms with plenty of showers and changing areas. They also offer personal training and have their very own FitPhil Zone with access to FitPhil, a master trainer. A great place for families or single members, you won't regret joining this club

I have been a member of the #FitPhil zone inside the MAC for almost 1 year and had an incredible experience from the start. The staff at the MAC have been very encouraging and positive and the personal trainer Phil has been amazing. He takes time to intentionally select workout that stabilize and grow different muscle groups while also teaching individualized advice on diet/lifestyle. The Fit Phil zone has been one of my favorite things I have been apart this past yr!

#FitPhil : has been so understanding to what my needs were and what my desires are. He has helped me to achieve my goals. After sitting for years due to kidney failure and being on dialysis, I received a donor kidney. At my sickest I was unable to walk to the back of Costco without having to take a break. Nice pool and facilities, but management does not do enough maintenance. Parking lot has a lot of potholes and low areas that hold water. Machines that count reps need batteries changed and they remain not working for 4 to 5 months. Recently a couple of the machines upstairs need maintenance as they have gotten jerky and rough like a bearing has failed but has been over a month and still needs attention.

Having owned/managed a very large athletic/fitness club and having been a certified fitness instructor, I would like to comment that MAC is an excellant athletic club. It is well managed, not overly crowded, always very clean, the staff is friendly, the fitness equipment and programs are the best. I love coming to this gym. It's huge, so I never have to worry about it being too crowded. There is plenty to do, and it is especially good if you want to bring your family. There is an indoor and outdoor pool, private rooms for racquet ball, tennis, ping-pong and just about anything you'd like to do, an indoor and outdoor tennis court, a basketball court and sauna. It's worth the price as long as you're coming here often. I come here with friends all the time, and the guest passes are 12 dollars per adult person. One of the best gyms I've been to.

It’s a really nice gym definitely the best one in the area. However it’s really disappointing that the men’s locker room has a steam room and sauna while the women’s one only has a steam room that is currently broken. When I did my tour I was told I would have access to a sauna as well but I completely forgot to ask where it was located (because I was amazed how nice the gym was) All the staff is extremely nice however their custodians are very rude. I go in the morning and night and both women spend most of the time in the ladies locker room on their phone. One of the ladies even got mad at me for washing my hands after she was done cleaning the sink.(Rudely saying something under her breath and very aggressively tossing her cleaning supplies around) That said, the gym is very clean the cleanest gym I have been in in the Richmond area for sure. I plan on continuing enjoying my membership but figured there may be people who love their sauna time like I do and the potential of some rude workers who would like to know the situation before starting a $60 membership. If the men get an extra amenity then the women shouldn’t be charged as much in my opinion. Why am I paying for an extra amenity that I don’t get to enjoy? Pretty lame.

A friend of mine took me there this summer and I enjoyed going to the pool now it cost $12 to take a friend there which I kind of thought was a little high but whatever they can do what they want this is America but after going inside and seeing the hot tub and the sauna in the pool inside and everything else couple of months later I decided to get a membership and personally I believe the membership for one person is extremely reasonable it's about 55 or $60 a month now that's not bad at all considering the other places within a mile of there cost a lot more yeah they're newer but who cares about new as long as it works but I got my membership on the 9th and November and I've been up there every day except one day since then I love the hot tub I wish all the Jets worked but hey nothing works perfect all the time you're dealing with water but the people are extremely nice polite they walked me through the initiation period of sending the paperwork and everything there was no initial fee to sign up it went you know 60 bucks and I was in the door got a passcode that day and the door and I've enjoyed it ever since I'm telling you if you got any kind of problems with your knees or back or shoulders or muscles you just sitting on hot tub for about 30-40 minutes you will feel like a new person I couldn't believe how much difference it made when I was young my daddy used to take me to the Y downtown in Portsmouth how's little kid I don't think it was a big deal believe me it is getting in there really changes your attitude about life you really get to relax but anyway that's just my opinion I enjoy it I'm glad I did it at least give it a try at least go there with somebody get in the pool getting the hot tub plus you getting the pool in the summer too what the hay but that's just my opinion

I have been going to this gym off and on for the past 6 years. Since the recent make over this is the BEST gym in the area hands down. For all of your needs, weight lifting, exercise, bodybuilding, power lifting, aerobics, exercise classes, basketball, racquet ball, tennis and swimming. I have called in three times, first time leaving a voice mail, second time speaking with the front desk and leaving a note, and the third time transferred to a full voice mail, then back to the front desk. The woman over the phone was unwilling to help beyond that, saying she didn't deal with that department. No offer to grab someone who does, just offering to leave another voice mail or note. These people messed up my billing information on a contract and threw me into collections. Which I paid off. Now they are demanding more money. I already paid off the contract with collections and I never asked for a new one or renewed the old one. So while they are still trying to charge me, they will not cooperate with me at all. I go in and ask about it. They tell me that billing can only help me. Though billing only is open till 4 PM. They were supposed to call me about two times, which never happened. I called them and never got a call back. No one seems to work there or something. As well as the kid behind the counter told me in front of the guy I'm sure is in charge in his very own words. "I can't stop someone from working out here just because someone shows up as inactive." So basically what you can do here is get a year contract. (As long as nothing is messed up.) Pay it off. Then the gym is FREE for the rest of your life. Just keep a key and keep going. They will not stop you from what they said. I now have a membership at Gold's Gym since all this has happened. I thought when I paid off my contract with the MAC in collections that I would be free to leave, but these guys seem to want to scam me for more money that I obviously do not owe. (Update: Shortly after posting this, they gave me a call and agreed to cancel everything and remove me from the system. Leaving this review in case anyone else has trouble. This was a long fight that lasted a few months and I am glad they finally took care of it.) (Update 2: The club is now under a new ownership. They changed a few things from what I saw as I faked interest in joining just to see what they changed before realizing they were all new people completely. This could have been a great thing. I was tempted to join back except the weight room was disappointing, most other things were basically the same, as well as they are charging their members a fortune now. They wanted me to pay around $70-80 for just myself without tennis. Sorry but its not worth that much honestly. I then proceeded to join American Family Fitness. I pay $44 a month there and they have so much more when it comes to workout stuff. Nice pool and hot tub. Name it and the basically got it. Indoor track and my personal favorite, 24hr access. Go there. Unless you really want an outdoor pool.

Recently my sister's daughter signed up for the so called junior academy tennis group class on Saturday. I had informed her that the $22 for a ninety class seemed very inexpensive for a 5 to 1 ratio. We quickly learned why this was so. The instructions was subpar to be kind. She has been playing for around 4 years and although she number 2 on her school team my sister recognizes she needs better coaching. Not only was the coaching extremely elementary but the instructor Robert failed to captivate any interest besides students gestures and a occasional nod.
This was a shame because the courts and facilities were extremely nice.
Unless you are interested in paying $22 for a babysitter I'd recommend looking for coaching with more quality, or simply any quality.

Awesome place. I did a Les Mills training here in the yoga room and was really impressed. It’s very spacious, they have tons of equipment with lots of different rooms. They have racquetball. The locker rooms and very clean are spacious and they have a snack bar and pool. If I lived near here I would definitely join!

Been a member for several years. Overall, I like the gym and the price. Building is dated, equipment isn't repaired promptly and the staff lacks diversity ( most minorities are on cleaning staff). Basketball court use is limited due to exercise classes/ events.

The positives are, rarely issues with a crowding and is affordably priced. Outdoor poor is great, except when they restrict use/ charge members.

Very old facility which you can tell instantly from the walls falling down in the indoor pool, leaky ceilings, etc. Always hard to get clear answers on why the baby pool never worked (for 3 years), why machines weren't working. They took away towel service, and are now charging to go to the outdoor pool on Fridays after 6pm b/c they have bands (term used VERY loosely here) and prizes. Will not be renewing our contract.

MAC is all around amazing, the building itself is a little out of date . The thing that bothers me the most is the leaks after the rain comes through. Especially at the basketball court , there’s a leak in the ceiling that drips down and is a hazard to the people playing . As a request , can you consider patching that one leak . Thanks

Worst experience of my life I was racing the wall jumped out and hit me. The karts wouldn't turn in corn field. Staff was very unfriendly. The go-karts need a lot of help. Gforce karts are way better.t

Giving them four stars because they really do a number of worthwhile things for the community while others just talk about it. They host the multi-day, regional Wheelchair Tennis Tournament each year and this brings folks from around the mid-Atlantic to our area and makes Richmond look like a caring, progressive community.

Great place to work out especially for a family with kids add they have a great kid area. Pool is nice and outdoor pool summer is fun. Well planned schedule for classes. Highly recommended.
