I never wanted to go to the gym, and I definitely never expected to enjoy it. Now I’m a regular.
I’ve worked with four of the professional trainers at Moore Than Fitness in different capacities.
August is my Personal Trainer. He meets me where I’m at each session. He fully explains the exercise. He helps me laugh at myself when I mess it up the first time(s). And he somehow makes it fun and motivates me to continue.
I’ve worked with Russell for nutrition coaching, helping me learn healthy eating habits and strategies to further support my fitness goals and health.
I’ve taken group classes with Kate and her energy and enthusiasm and sense of humor are contagious, and they enhance the experience.
I’ve taken mobility classes with Kalena. Kalena surprises me each time with not only their quick wit, but also with gentle movements that seem easy at first, but quickly become challenging, using muscles in ways they don’t normally get used in my day-to-day life.
If you have a desire to be fit or on a fitness journey but have hesitations, consider doing the consultation or dropping in to Saturday public class (see Instagram for link to tickets). I’m glad I did. 😊

What a great gym! Super inclusive, great vibes, this gym will make you want to go there. Kate’s an amazing trainer- she can pinpoint what your body needs and figure out how to train out any aches and pains with strengthening. Ditch your uncomfortable experience at the big gyms and switch to Moore than Fitness.

I started training with Russell in 2017 while I was working a stressful job at a law firm. I was concerned about the toll the stress was taking on my body and my quick weight gain and decline in fitness level. Russell was easy to train with: he was nonjudgmental about my body shape (which I was embarrassed about) and talked to me about how I, as a vegetarian, could improve my eating habits and optimize my weight loss. His education and training allowed him to suggest exercises tailored to my particular problems including my posture and hip pain. He was able to vary my exercise routine so that each week I was adding new and more challenging exercises. Slowly but surely, over the course of a year, I saw dramatic changes in my body shape and size, and my weight slowly came down.
I took a break from training due to my work load at the law firm and covid-19 and lost some of my fitness and regained some pounds. I am back again training with Russell and I know I'm in good hands. He has the best interests of his clients at heart and is an all-around "good guy".

Moore than Fitness is the absolute friendliness and inclusive gym I have ever been to. From the moment I walked in the door, I felt right at home. I always leave feeling happier than when I got there. All their trainers are well trained to work with everyone just where they are. I also go to the Saturday mobility class and it is great for stretching / strengthening
My personal trainer is Arryn and he is awesome. I have achieved so much in the months I’ve trained with him. He listens to what I need and works with me to achieve (and surpass) my goals. He always has something new to challenge me. I never get bored. And the rare times something doesn’t work, he is quick with modifications. I love all the support he provides. I really do believe I can do it all!

Moore Than Fitness is more than just a gym. It’s a community.
Russell, Kate, and their team have built something genuinely special here. I've been going to Moore Than Fitness for a few months now, and as someone who moved to Richmond recently, this was one of my first real connections to the local community.
From the first visit, they made me feel welcome. It never felt like just a transaction or like I was just another client. It felt genuine.
When I joined, they even sent me a handwritten postcard. That might sound small, but it honestly stuck with me. At a time when I was adjusting to a new place and routine, Moore Than Fitness became one of the steady anchors I could lean on.
Training with Kate has been awesome. She's supportive, pushes me in the right ways, and actually listens to what I want out of my workouts. I've already started seeing real progress and feel stronger, both physically and mentally. Even on days when I'm not in the best headspace, I leave feeling way better than when I walked in. Her energy is contagious. We're usually laughing through the workout while still getting it done. She makes it easy to show up, even on the days I don't feel like it, and that really matters.
The Saturday community drop-in classes are a favorite. They're lively, upbeat, and a great chance to connect with other people while getting in a solid workout. What's cool is that you don’t need to be a member to join. That makes it easy for new folks or anyone just curious to check it out. Whether you're easing into a routine or just visiting, the energy in those classes is always a vibe.
If you're after more than a place to lift weights, if you want a space where you feel supported and genuinely seen, this is it!

I started training at Moore Than Fitness in June 2025. I have trained with Maggie, Russell (owner) and now with Kalena. They all are magnificent. I am getting stronger and my mobility is getting better. I am in awe with this gym. I can't wait to see biceps in my arms. This is the best gym I have ever attended.

I’ve recently started going to Moore Than Fitness and can say without a doubt that this gym is one of the most friendly & inclusive gyms I’ve ever been to! I personally feel extremely welcomed and part of a larger family. What drove me to join this gym was a desire to grow my physical strength under the guidance of a personal trainer beyond what I’ve been able to accomplish individually and I could not be happier with the valuable instruction I’ve received thus far. It was easy to sign up and as an added bonus, it’s been super easy managing my membership and scheduling 1-on-1 training sessions with my personal trainer. I now feel I have a clear path to tackle some powerlifting aspirations next year and I feel extremely empowered to push myself at a pace that is comfortable & approachable because of the care & pride this gym takes in meeting it’s members’ needs & desires! I'm definitely leaving each session feeling like my time was well spent which leaves me looking forward to my next sessions; I can guarantee this gym & its atmosphere will exceeded your expectations!

Lovely, welcoming space for one and all! Maggie is so encouraging and just plain fun to work out with and the gym itself is so inclusive. As someone who is very intimidated by gyms, Moore Than Fitness with its quirky and super cute decor and very friendly staff, I finally feel comfortable in a gym space and actually look forward to going there.

As a person in ED recovery and living in a larger body, the gym intimidated the hell out of me. I knew I wanted to learn how to move my body with some help & direction from people with knowledge in fitness but I had an intense fear of judgement. The first time I visited the gym and met the owner, Russell, I felt welcomed & safe. I'm not a gym person really. I've belonged to 4 different gym/exercise facilities in Richmond over the years and I went into the gym part as little as possible. At Moore than Fitness, the chickens and the murals and the re-purposed gas station set the vibe the second I walked in. The way that Russell listened to me when we met, and the fact that my personal trainer comes up with fun and sometimes funky exercises lets me be comfortable being my authentic self. We laugh, we discuss what hurts, we talk about fitness goals- even the absurd ones. And I trust that my trainer is watching and listening carefully to make sure I am safe and I am making progress. I see improvement after 2 weeks, and I can imagine a future where my sixty-plus , full-figure body is doing the things that are important to me again.

Fantastic experience so far! More like a fitness clubhouse than just another gym.
Been doing weekly personal training with Kalena plus the drop in class for about two months. All the good vibes! All the expertise! Solid results in strength and stability gains. I started attending MTF’s Saturday group classes about a year ago with a friend. I was hooked immediately! Not only did I love the workout, the sense of community and this group of people were amazing. I knew I wanted to get back to a group setting of working out because I had been a part of team sports and working out alone had become lonely. I wanted direction and community. MTF delivered! I started coming to semi-private training in the Spring and haven’t looked back! I love the trainers knowledge and acceptance of every body, the friendships I’ve made, the vibes, and most of all how strong I feel. Cannot recommend enough!

It has been such a pleasure to work with everyone at MTF. You guys brought me into the nest and made me feel supported and nurtured in a way I hadn’t experienced before in a gym.
What a blessing it has been to be paired with Arryn and work with him over the past couple of months. He has made sure I’m getting exactly what I need in my workouts and fine tuning as we go along to make sure I stay injury free but also challenged. Even better, our conversations and work have led to changes I didn’t expect and I’m realizing my inner thoughts about myself have been holding me back.
But it’s not all serious, far from it. Arryn keeps me laughing and it’s never boring which is so important to me. And even better I’m finally seeing changes that I imagined I would see over the past 18 months I’ve worked out.
You won’t go wrong if you decide to join us chickens! It’s a pretty awesome place!

Wonderful atmosphere, skilled trainers, lots and lots of equipment. I’m working with personal trainer August who is helping strengthen some problem areas, and attending the weekly community circuit class (see instagram for details), and I just signed up to be a member of the gym, which is available to people signed up for private or semiprivate training. Not at all the usual gym atmosphere - a gym for people who don’t like or are intimidated by gyms.

I've been going to MTF for about a year now, and I can honestly say the most standout feature of this gym is the amazing environment. From day one, I’ve felt completely welcomed, and it’s made such a difference in my fitness journey.
I've done both private training and semi-private training classes and it has been just what I needed. Everyone there is so knowledgeable and great at what they do and they focus on creating a positive environment. In the semi-private's there is always a high-five or words of encouragement shared. It’s motivating and really helps me push myself harder. Kate's enthusiasm and energy is contagious and I actually look forward to working out, and getting stronger, all thanks to her! I always leave feeling energized, not just physically, but mentally as well.

I first visited Moore Than Fitness to support a friend's event and was immediately struck by how welcoming the space felt. It’s hard to put in to words exactly what this gym means to me. I’m someone who avoided gym environments for years after experiencing such judgement and harshness. I started at Moore Than Fitness with a fear of the gym and working out after injuring myself years ago. I have only been going for a couple of weeks now but I've already shed that fear and have started to really focus on my health and strength. The staff could not be nicer and more knowledgeable. Russell runs a very welcoming environment and makes sure that everyone feels at home. August has been an amazing personal trainer that really puts me at ease while giving me a workout that I can already feel results from. I am so happy that I found this gym and these amazing people!!
Update: it’s now been over 3 months training at the gym and my life has really changed. I feel better than I have in a long time and I’m stronger than I’ve ever been!

After the consultation he paired me up with August as a trainer. August has been fantastic!! He’s so supportive and excited for my success. The weekend group classes are amazing. Everyone at the group class is so supportive of each other and welcoming. If you're looking for a glorified elementary school PE class, this is not your place. It's a gym. That said, it's the most welcoming gym possible. Russell’s gift is meeting you where you are, and building a program that caters to your needs and abilities, while still really pushing you to achieve your goals.
Two years ago, I was in a rut, doing the same simple workouts. (But not really doing them well). He opened my eyes to many different workouts and makes sure I have the movement downs rights. He will make adjustments along the way to make sure my form is right. And boy does he push me hard, in such a good and encouraging way.

I’ve been training with Russell for about 18 months now and it has truly changed my life. I came to Russell after my first fitness journey experience became stagnant. From the first phone interview I was hooked and excited in a way I hadn't been before. Russell meets me where I am through thick or thin. I never felt pressured and I have always felt supported and encouraged. He has seen me through injuries, illnesses and days of being bone tired and stressed as a mom of two with two part time jobs. He checks in with me every week before we work out and is patient with me through those periods of life where all I can do is the bare minimum. ‘Just come and we will work with what you’ve got’ he texts me when I say I’m struggling. And I always always, without fail, feel better physically and mentally after. He, Kate and Alex have created an epic and truly wonderful work out environment and community. Moore Than Fitness is one of the only gyms I have EVER been to that meets you where you are and embodies a broader perspective of fitness that goes far above and beyond the detrimental realm of *diet culture*.
My experience with Russell and team has been nothing but positive; they are well-informed coaches who strategically and intelligently work with you to meet your goals, while being honest about the health and well-being of those goals.

I worked out with Russell Moore of Moore Than Fitness for 18 months and I wish I had quit months earlier.
In fairness, things were good for a while. When Russell suggested I try powerlifting, I loved it … at first. But soon I felt like Russell replaced my goals with his own.
I didn’t immediately connect how much worse I felt with what was happening in my workouts; Russell is charismatic, and I didn’t realize how many times I had spoken up about changing my training until I got some distance from him. I thought I was being stupid or difficult. He’s the expert, right? Obviously I just didn’t understand how this worked.
But heavy lifting wore me down. When I said I was exhausted all the time, Russell told me to stop running, even though cardio fitness and endurance were among my top goals. When I asked if we could take a break from powerlifting because I was SO BORED of just squat-bench-deadlift, he laughed and said yeah, you can take a break … after your meet. Another time, I asked why I couldn’t just train in a more balanced and fun way and go to my meet being however strong I was. Russell looked like he didn’t even understand what I was saying and said no, the way to prepare for a powerlifting meet is to train for powerlifting.
Every time I tried to take control of my fitness, I failed.
After 18 months of training at Moore Than Fitness, I was stronger, but I hated working out. Instead of feeling proud of my accomplishments, I felt stupid, inept, and disappointed by what I couldn’t do. I had no faith in myself or my ability to change anything. I didn’t recognize how much of my agency and control I had handed over to someone else or how damaging that was.
Now that I’m training somewhere else -- with kind, experienced coaches who are helping me rebuild my confidence and re-find the joy in working out -- I can see how much I deserved better.

Have done private and small group training here and it has been great. My goal is to improve and correct my form and start getting stronger. In the months I’ve trained with Alex, I have done both and hope to continue to build upon that.
They’ve also been very accommodating when I’ve needed to reschedule, and everyone I’ve met there is genuinely nice and the kind of people you want to know and see on a regular basis.

Moore Than Fitness is hands down the best personal training gym in Richmond. I recently moved back to Richmond and tried two other personal fitness gyms before finally discovering Russell’s gym. Not only is it the most inclusive and fun gym I’ve ever been a part of (two words I would have never used to describe my gym experiences in the past), but the trainers are extremely knowledgeable and genuinely care about my goals and success. We love our trainer, Alex, and are much closer to our fitness goals even after just a few sessions with him. I started training here with Russell a little over three months ago and I can already feel the results of our work both physically and mentally. Whether you're just starting out on your fitness journey, trying to hop back into some sort of fitness routine, or are a seasoned powerlifter, this gym and its trainers will not disappoint. Russell has crafted the most inclusive and welcoming gym in RVA.
I have been going to this gym consistently now for over a year. After years of being on and off with my fitness, Moore Than Fitness has helped me maintain consistency. I have a couple of weak areas and the trainers are extremely receptive to my needs while also pushing me outside of my comfort zone.
I feel like there are so many gyms to choose from here in richmond, but I honestly can't say enough good things about Russell and this gym. I promise, you won't be disappointed and it will be the single best investment you'll make for yourself.

One of the best investments I have ever made for myself. I started with Russell back in Spring 2022 looking to get back into shape. Russell is a great trainer. He has 10+ years of experience and I've learned so much from him both in terms of specific exercises and general fitness knowledge. He really makes fitness feel accessible even if you're just getting started. He's tough but kind when it comes to motivating you to do your best and just overall a really positive influence. He's helped me set and achieve goals and establish healthy habits, which is really something because I'm pretty set in my ways. I met Russell in a local Gym based out of Richmond where he started as my trainer few years ago. I was obese and inflexible then. He started me off on a bi-weekly one hour training combining cardio, core strength training and offering consultation on my diets and lifestyle outside of the gym as well. During each session he goes over the details of my weekly activity and food habits and followed through sincerely. It paid off gradually my weight came off and I started to see the difference. I've trained with Russell for years and was drawn to him because of his understanding of body mechanics and overall movement. As an older "Athlete" I was recovering from surgery and dealing with other pain and joint issues. Regardless of your age, body type, fitness experience, physical abilities/limitations, gender identity, sexual orientation, etc., Russell provides a warm, welcoming, inclusive, and judgement-free environment for all types of folks. His private training space provides a comfortable place to just be you without the fear, self-consciousness, and distractions that can come with working out at a public gym.
Throughout my entire life, I was always terrified of the gym. I felt like I lacked the education I needed to get started and lacked the self-confidence to show up. Working out with Russell changed all that for me. He listens to you and helps you set realistic goals and expectations.
He'll educate you, he'll motivate you, and he'll hold you accountable. He'll challenge you and what you think are your limits. Russell helped me learn that I'm capable of a lot more than I thought possible. And he's an all-around nice guy!

Highly recommend and give Russell at Moore than Fitness, 5 stars. I am in my mid 50’s and have been working out since my 20’s rather unsuccessfully. In the past I could not stick with a workout program more than three or four months before my back or other injuries would vier me off course and I would give up and stop. I started working out with Russell about 2 years ago and have not missed a week yet. Russell always emphasizes that injuries are a part of the process and there is a way to work through and around them so they don’t stop you in your tracks. I am in the best shape of my life and feel better than ever! Russell is very knowledgeable about the body and diet and is a consummate professional. He has a way of pushing you to your limits so that you meet your goals and see your gains so much so you can’t wait for the next session.
