I first visited Massanutten several years ago. What struck me about the property was the incredible conditioning of the golf courses and the attention to detail. At many similar resorts we have visited, golf seems to be secondary, but here at Massanutten, everything is first-rate. From the overall condition of the accommodations to the waterpark and golf courses, every amenity is top-notch.

The resort’s showcase golf course is Mountain Greens. Mountain Greens offers somewhat of a reality check for those who think they’re better than they really are! The course offers four sets of tees with something to suit every golfer. The Blue Tees play 6,443 yards with a par of 72. Less masochistic men – like myself – may choose to play from the White Tees at 6,087 yards, while seniors will have a good time from the Gold Tees at 5,608. The ladies typically play from the Red Tees, which play 4,846 yards. Choose the tees that best suit your game and you're certain to have a good time.

As you would expect, the topography is very hilly with quite a few elevation changes. There are plenty of tree-lined fairways and steep drop-offs on the peripheries; meandering streams frame several fairways as well. It’s more about shot placement and thinking ahead than it is about hitting the ball as far as you can. As you play the course, you’ll notice there are several blind tee shots as well as a few blind approaches. Several greens are multi-tiered, and the breaks are directly influenced by the mountain itself.

Mountain Greens has several memorable holes. Number 2 is a 487-yard, par 5 that will have some players thinking about going for the green in two. With trees lining both sides of the fairway, control and accuracy on your first three shots will provide the best opportunity at par or better. Hitting your layup shot just short of the 100-yard marker will leave the best look into a well-protected and well-undulated putting surface.

At 140 yards, the par-3 8th hole plays uphill and may require an extra club off the tee. There’s an "M" shaped bunker in front, so you’ll need to carry the ball onto the green. After you putt out, look back at the tee and admire the views of the Shenandoah Valley. No wonder this is Mountain Green's signature hole.

The 309-yard 12th hole is a short par 4 that requires some thought. Consider hitting something less than driver off the tee and play your tee shot out to the left, short of the farthest fairway bunker. From there, you'll have an easy pitch shot into the green and a good chance at birdie. This is arguably the most scenic par 4 on the course.

Number 16 is another par 3 that plays 176 yards and requires an accurate shot off the tee into an elevated green. If you favor the right side, the ball should funnel down to the putting surface. Par is a good score here.

We play this course every year as owners
. While it's a challenging course due to the slope of the fairways, Tee Boxes are in really rough shape and a couple of the greens are virtually unplayable in large areas. The starters and Pro Shop people are really friendly, but not enough to make up for the $84.00 to play, given the course conditions.

Played a day after nothing but rain, it was cart path only. The course played great. A couple tee areas had water but overall the course was very playable. The greens rolled well too. You better hit the ball straight because balls roll down the hills if you just miss the fairway.

I’ve visited and played this course twice over the past two years. Conditions and experience was pretty similar both times. Starting with the layout: While I love a good mountain course with lots of elevation changes, I wasn’t a fan of the exclusively tilted fairways on most holes. It punishes good tee shots for no reason and gets old pretty fast. The course conditions are okay at best. fairway grass is in decent shape, tee boxes are pretty beat up, and greens are varied from a few good ones to one or two with full on disease/rot/deadspots. (See photo) bunkers don’t drain well and don’t seem to get daily raking/attention from the grounds crew. In general the course seems to hold moisture and is pretty soft/wet. And to round out the bads….the gnats/bugs are annoying as hell and follow you around the entire time. The goods: the views aren’t bad, the wildlife is rad, they recently got new golf carts which are nice, the staff is always very friendly, and the price isn’t absurd.

It’s definitely worth coming out and giving it a play to experience it for yourself but I don’t think it’s a course I’d enjoy playing over and over again.

We love playing this course. It's a very scenic course. It's a challenging course, but it's enjoyable. In my opinion, it's in the best shape it's ever been in.

The only negative thing I'll say is that they really need to lighten up with the stupid cooler rule. None of us ever bring alcohol with us. It's literally only water and Gatorade. They make you unload your personal cooler into their uninsulated tiny cart cooler that doesn't hold drinks for two people. It's literally the same items, but in a different cooler. What's the big deal?! Sheesh...

Heard a lot of good things about this course but was disappointed. They’re losing a couple greens to mold and the whole course could use some TLC. Really not worth the $77 to ride 18.

A tough course. A majority of the fairways sloped to the right. A left handed golfers might be penalized frequently when driving. My drives down the middle would hit the ground, bounce, and then start rolling right. A couple of holes have guard rails, but not high enough to stop a bouncing ball off the hard fairway. Too many tee boxes sloped. You might be standing slightly above or below the ball when standing on a tee box. The course scenery is beautiful. The staff is excellent. The course is well maintained. Overall, a great one-time experience.

Played this course on a family vacation. Very challenging course, with a lot of slopes, blind shots, sloping greens, and hidden creeks. Also, I've got to see a ton of wildlife. Even with it being challenging, it was still a very enjoyable round of golf. Recommend if in the area to play.

I’ll start with the cons, and the biggest is out of their control…the gnats!!! Holy moly haha they were bad but whatever. Some spots were a little patchy in the fairway but the greens were flawless! Very tight fairways, you have to play smart. I enjoyed the challenge and had a blast. All in all, great course πŸ‘πŸΌ

I wish that I could give more than 5 stars, because the customer service was GREAT!!! Mr. Mitch was at my car with my cart before I got my shoes changed, and when I was ready he explained all the trouble areas to try to avoid. Mr. Randy in the pro shop and the other 2 gentlemen I can't remember there names where also GREAT!!! I really enjoyed playing the Mountain Greens course I love tight courses that offer a challenge and make you think before you just wack at the ball, this course is fun and will DEFINITELY make you make you think. Lets not leave out the maintenance crew the course was in great shape...To the entire staff thank y'all again.... I will DEFINITELY BE BACK.

After playing the Woodstone Meadows course 2 days earlier, I was hopeful that this course would be in better condition. I was greatly disappointed. The fairways were cut at a length you would normally find in the first cut of rough. At $75 for the round, they should at least tend to the fairways a bit better.

The only redeeming factors were the beautiful picturesque landscape and deer who enjoyed the course along with the golfers. The course should have received two stars but got three stars for the views.

Next time I come, I'll definitely pass on these two courses at Massanutten and look for some local courses nearby.

Context: I am a golf professional. This week was our family vacation (myself, wife, 2 kids) and we chose to come out to the mountains to hike, do outdoor activities, and play evening golf (my kids are 6 & 7 so we play in the evening to avoid getting in the way of other players). We/I like being last off and using the course as a practice facility (because it is if you aren’t playing in a tournament).

The Course: I only brought 7iron - putter, and I love playing with my wife from the forward tees - I played a few holes from the mens whites, so I am reviewing the course from that perspective. I’m amazed. I’ve played all of the private courses around DC, and I’d rather play here. Mountain golf is special, and Mountain Greens gets it right. The course presents some elevation change which could challenge players that don’t know their distances, but taking an extra club and sending it over the green a little never hurt anyone.

There are so many scenic shots on this course, you can easily find yourself distracted, taking in the views in your preshot routine; I can’t imagine it ever gets old.

The greens were on the slow side of normal, but they were pure as can possibly be, and with the 4+% slopes on many putting greens, you may find yourself quite happy they aren’t faster. The speed was perfectly appropriate for the course, in my opinion. The fairways were pure, and the rough was short, which I like in mountain golf, as it’s already tight and trees/woods can be punishing enough.

The Tee boxes were as lush as the fairways, and I’d love to review the bunkers, but only snobs review bunkers, as they are hazards, and no one reviews the quality of water hazards. Same with carts… they got us to our ball safely, therefore they are perfect.

I could play this front 9 for the rest of my life at 6:15pm and be very, very happy about it.

The staff: I didn’t tell them I was in the industry, point them to any coaching accolades, or anything.. no golf talk. I want to be anonymous. They couldn’t have been more kind, warm, and helpful. Remember I’m with my 40+ handicap wife, remarkably uncoordinated 6 year old, and future stud of a golfer 7 year old. All I care about is how they’re treated - my son is walking on sunshine after a compliment on his touch on the putting green from a professional. This evening, we tee’d off with no one in front of us for 3 holes, and then slammed into a 7some. You read that right. Sevensome. I made my usual advances with golf shots, making our presence known without confrontation, hoping to trigger the golf etiquette of letting us β€œplay through.” It didn’t happen, so we skipped two holes. The complimentary professional somehow knew this happened, came to speak to my wife and I, and made sure we felt comfortable playing 2 extra holes after we finished. Perfect. What more could you ask for?

There is a LOT of poor customer service out there these days, and I didn’t find it here. I don’t know how many staff members there are, but we played Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. I think I met them all.

The wildlife: I fed a deer with my kids, found a baby deer feeding on it’s mother, we β€œrescued” a northern flicker with a broken wing, hawk-like birds scream and soar above you in the evening as you play, and the groundhogs are EVERYWHERE. The non-golfers among you that love nature should pay a cart fee, or whatever the pro shop offers you, and walk the course. Golf won’t spoil the walk.

I was told there was another course here. I drove past it. Said, β€œnot interested,” to my wife. I was told it’s easier. If you’re that bad, play here anyway, and play from a more forward set of tees to make the course shorter and bring down the course rating.

Did I just spend all this time writing this because I can see the course if I turn on a flashlight and am fighting temptation to go hit a couple shots? Maybe.

Play here,

- a golf pro
