Really great place, parking is free on weekends and past 4 on week days, employees are friendly and helpful, great climbs, very clean, inviting atmosphere, what more could you ask for? Definitely my favorite climbing spot, recommended for all climbers. There are no autobelays, so the place is much better if you know how to belay, but the test is straightforward and easy, anyone who has belayed will have no problem passing it. All the top-roping routes have great belay devices attached, so no need to bring one unless you plan on lead climbing. The bouldering section is large, has great pads, and lots of diverse boulders. The gym is clean and has all the equipment you would need for a full workout. Highly recommended!!!

Took an intro to ropes course with my partner to try out the gym and try out climbing and was blown away. Heath was so amazing and helpful and we both learned so much. Got to climb the class and Heath came to check back in on us and was super kind and gave great tips. 10/10 would come back!

I used to think Movement was a great gym. It has frequent changes in setting, good and well-maintained ropes, and used to have a good community. Unfortunately, after several months of wondering where our favorite employees went (thinking we just kept missing them at odd hours + seeing lots of new faces) we learned that Gus had been fired due to union busting. He (and several other employees) had been a large part of what made the movement climbing community good and welcoming, and I am disappointed that the gym would choose to do this over fostering community spirit. Also, the membership is expensive and increasing in price, and I doubt they are lacking for funds to pay employees.... Unrelated, but I also think that the setting has become more sandbagged and focused towards taller people recently. This could also be a skill issue.. but I also think they need more variety in climbing and less dynos.

Movement Crystal City is a fantastic gym and fantastic community. It’s the only gym I’ve ever gone to that also sent reminders for you to come back.

The gym itself is clean, and often busy, but the walls are regularly redone so I’m never bored. Teachers for yoga and climbing classes have always been fantastic

This place is huge and the routes are awesome, especially for lead. The lack of auto belays makes it difficult for new people to get into climbing. Also, if I bring a friend it's awesome they get in for free, but I'm basically a belayer for them unless I have another friend who's belay certified. The community here is off putting and lots of times plainly unfriendly. I've been to gyms in various places of the country, but this gym is the only one where I've seen people get upset when others climb on a neighboring route that has no cross over. I even grabbed a rope to try and move it out of someone's way while they were climbing to just be aggressively confronted by their belayer because they thought I was going to climb. Is everyone here a selfish, antisocial, donkey? I don't believe so, but there's lots of them.

Absolutely love this gym. I usually just climb but every now and again I'll do the yoga classes which have been great. I often bring guests here... they all have had a great time too. The staff is wonderful. The climbing partners I've found have been fantastic. (Such a great investment for my mental health!)

I enjoy the gym but hate the crowds. Since 2019, this place has been acquiring more and more members while increasing the membership price. However, the space hasn’t expanded. For people who have been members for multiple years, this is becoming a problem, especially during peak hours.

Large bouldering area is a plus. But I'm a solo climber when I'm traveling, and was disappointed that there are no autobelays on the top rope walls. I'd be back every time I'm in DC, except for that. Bouldering is fun, but I'd rather be on a big wall, and hate to bug other climbers (who are always paired up or in groups, just like I am when climbing at home...) for a charity catch. Autobelays aren't that big of an investment, and a handful would transform this gym's accessibility for solo climbers. Please consider?

You know management sucks when people ask you where you climb and if you say movement, most people who've been around long enough say, "you mean earth treks?" (derogatory)

STOP THE UNION BUSTING! BRING BACK GUS! climbing culture is about community, solidarity, and inclusion, and movement is NOT IT. Take your money elsewhere, vibes are all off at this dingy basement, and that terrible smell? it's not stinky climbers feet, it's the smell of unethical business practices πŸ‘ŽπŸΌπŸ‘ŽπŸΌ

It's fine but is unfortunately run by people who refuse to treat their employees with respect. The union busting and illegal firings make it hard to enjoy. I'm ready for the day that this private equity decides to cash out and we can have our gyms back.

The main positive is the location if you live in DC. If there was a competitor, I wouldn't be here.

I've been a member of this gym since 2017, back when it felt like a real community. Over the years, I've watched it slowly transform into a corporate operation, where climbing culture and care for employees seem to have taken a back seat to profits.

Most recently, the firing of Gus (and Jeremy way back when) was not only disappointing, it was blatantly unjust. It's hard not to see it as a clear act of union busting. This kind of behavior doesn't align with the values that originally drew so many of us to this space.

I hope management reconsiders how they treat the very people who make this gym worth coming to.

I’ve always appreciated the workers at this location and I hate to see Movement corporate acting illegally and in bad faith to oppose their rights to unionize. I paused my membership for travel reasons and may extend that pause if leadership continues to ignore the community.

I've previously been proud to be a member, but as Movement continues to engage in illegal union busting behavior and has fired several beloved employees, I cannot recommend this gym anymore. I hope Movement will realize the error of their ways and stop the illegal firings, bargain in good faith with their employees, and make right their past mistakes. A gym which doesn't care about it's employees and meeting their basic needs or respecting their legally protected bargaining rights clearly does not care about their members or uplifting the sport we so love either. Movement CC, do better!

I've been a member of this gym since before it was called Movement. To see the changes that have occured over the years is disheartening. I'm especially saddened and angered by the wrongful termination of Gus, who was a long time staff member, and helpful and familiar face at the gym. Seriously, quit it with the union busting.

The facilities and yoga classes are great, but you can really only be as great as the community you create. And that includes your staff.

Will be considering other climbing gym options in the future.

this has been a good gym in the past, very accessible, good route setting, some excellent yoga classes. but I hear they've been working really hard to shut the workers union down and have likely done a few illegal things in the process.. when i emailed them to ask about it there was no reply. I'll update my review after the lawsuit is settled but it's not a good look for the management.

Love this gym, it’s super convenient location wise and has a ton of climbs, plus I’ve been really enjoying yoga classes lately.
HOWEVER they’ve been union busting for YEARS and have recently fired one of Movement Crystal City’s lead union organizers for ridiculous trumped-up reasons. I’ve had several friends ask me about the gym recently, folks who want to get into climbing or are trying to find a home gym, and I unfortunately can’t recommend the gym wholeheartedly anymore with how corporate leadership has been mistreating their employees. Gym staff are what makes ALL movement gyms what they are-please rehire Gus and bargain in good faith!!

Crystal City was my first climbing gym. I learned to climb here. I will always cherish the memories made here. The thing that made Crystal City the wonderful place it isβ€”more than the routes, more than the equipment, more than the locationβ€”was always the community, and the bedrock of our community are the workers. The workers at Crystal City have always been hard working and community focused. The workers went out of their way to make me feel welcome at Crystal City. Gus was one of those workers. I am so dismayed and disheartened to hear that Gus has been illegally fired in an effort to union bust. Rehire Gus and bargain in good faith, Movement. Your workers are what make you great. Remember that.

This gym will always have an incredibly special place in my heart. The community atmosphere is so welcoming and the sets are always fun and exciting. However, the best part of the gym is the wonderful staff. I am so disheartened to learn about the illegal Union busting going on and the illegal firing of the most wonderful human, Gus ❀️. Bargain in good faith with your union and BRING BACK GUS.

2025 Update: This was my first climbing gym, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Unfortunately, it does not hold a special place in its heart for the people who work there.

The persistent union busting activities, including illegal firings of employees who built this gym into what it is (was) - mean that I can't support it in good conscious.

I hope that the leadership changes course and take steps to center the employees who made this gym amazing... but until then, I won't be visiting this gym.

Went to this gym basically every day for a year and loved it. Good setting, nice gym area. But the staff are the best part and the union busting that corporate is pulling treats people as problems rather than the reason Movement makes money at all. Hard to go here in light of that.

Movement as a corporation has killed climbing and what it means to be a community. I started climbing here in 2022, only to see this get increasingly worse with the removal of Gus and their union-busting efforts. I've been a Movement member on and off for a long time - but I'm deeply troubled by their illegal anti-union actions, such as freezing wages and firing unionizing employees a.k.a. union busting. Movement has become a huge corporation that no longer seems to care for the employees or tight-knit communities that it once was. I would really urge this gym and company as a whole to think further on their values and what "climb as you are" really means... because this ain't it.

Went there yesterday, talked to 3 people at the front desk and each one told me something different. I had 3 family members with me, otherwise, I would have just left. I didn’t really understand what was going on and everybody was all over the place and looked puzzled with every question. I get that this has become a place where avid climbers go but atleast be able to answer simple questions. This place was better when it was earth trekks.

Making sure your front desk staff are on the same page about the info they say would really go a long way. I really was thinking about recertifying but I won’t be anymore.

Great gym, good training area, and systems boards. Staff were pretty friendly. Pretty creative routes and a good mix of climbs.

Two nitpicks that keep this from being a 5 star gym:

1. A couple holds were missing set screws near the top and spun.
2. Some of the older sets were pretty greasy and some of the holds were overly polished and probably need to be retired.

I've been a member of Movement for several years. Their facility is a great value, considering the ample wall section (lots of easy/medium/difficult TR, lots of lead, easy/medium/difficult bouldering) plus their general training equipment (barbells, kettlebells, weighted vests, pull up bars, moonboard, tension board, etc.) The staff is extremely friendly, and can help you regardless of experience level. I've been fortunate to personally boulder, TR, and lead at this gym. They also have a yoga studio (free for members), and frequently host events; whether its facilitating climbing outside, friendly local comps, fun themed setting (like buddy boulders for Valentines day). There's no shortage of reasons to join!

I’m a V3 climber. This is the 4th Movement gym I’ve been to. This is the only one I’d rate less than 5 stars. The V0-V3 boulders here are very inconsistent, and often boring. They are also harder than I’m used to. I’m not one to shy away from trying something difficult, but if it’s also boring and straight forward, I’m not interested in continuing. Additionally, the layout of the bouldering section makes crowding an issue. This place is probably better for more experienced climbers.

After a decade with Movement/Earth Treks, recent experiences have me contemplating a switch. The deal on monthly membership discounts based on gym visits fell flat at Crystal City - none of my visits were logged, and their response was "SOL" instead of a proactive "this needs to be rectified." Previously, if I forgot my gear, Movement would give me a free gear rental, considered part of the membership. However, when I went to Movement CC this week , I was told that the previous practice was only a courtesy. Well then, I guess members no longer get courtesy. Frequent price hikes and particularly that last-minute December increase were frustrating. With other things going on too, I just feel like Movement is losing its community vibe and becoming more corporate, which was my main reason of being a loyal customer, so maybe its time for me to explore more affordable gym options as they are no longer loyal to us.

I would not recommend going here. I purchased a holiday special and never received any email follow up or any correspondence about it. Only upon remembering it a year later did I call and find out that they intended it to be used in 60 days or expired. I tried to work with management for a solution but was repeatedly told "I'm sorry that you are frustrated, but those are the contract terms." There is something they could do, but they CHOSE to keep my money and provide nothing in return. A single day pass would have been completely appropriate and an opportunity to make a better impression. It would cost them nothing to do that. I wonder how many specials they advertise but never intend on being used.

Decided to visit Movement with a friend of mine after looking at some climbing gyms in the area. TLDR, this is a solid climbing gym. Nice people and very clean. Plenty of boulder routes and a nice top rope area as well.

Bouldering:
All the boulder walls are fairly graded by the route setters and there are plenty of route to choose from. There is also small top out area as well, which is pretty cool. And, its all pretty spacious so while resting you don't feel cramped and in peoples way.

Top Rope:
Plenty of top rope routes that I saw, but didn't spend too much time there to comment.

Gym:
Very nice and spacious weighting area. Clean and people are very aware with re racking weights. Quality equipment as well for any type of fitness activity.

No autobelays, so if you're traveling alone and trying to rope climb, you'll need to find someone to give you a catch.
I was visiting for the weekend and brought 2 friends that didn't know how to climb. I paid $29 for myself and realized that they didn't have autos until after the fact.
Testing out to top rope was an interesting process even if youve been climbing for years--you can definitely tell this is run like a large business. They want you to use their specific vocabulary, test you about the harness, etc.

Even though they seemed to be strict with some things, I thought it was odd they didn't show my friends how to properly put their harness on or teach them how to check if they are wearing their harness correctly and no orientation was given to them (or me, it was all of our first time here).
Also, the grades for ropes are very soft.
Climbers were friendly enough to give me a catch a few times so it wasn't a total waste of money.

Perhaps they are not equipped/trained for inclusion? However, If i was CEO of this place, I would welcome everyone. YOU ARE IN THE NORTH CAPITAL REGION! THERE ARE ALL KINDS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE NEVER CLIMBED BEFORE. DON'T BE SO PROTECTIVE OF YOUR GYM FOR "MEMBERS ONLY".

Beautiful gym in a convenient location in Crystal City with plenty of free parking. The boulders were really well set with variety of problem types and terrain. Grades are a little soft which is totally fine. Staff were also friendly and enthusiastic, making the overall experience fun and enjoyable. Prices aren't cheap, but seems in line with the area.

I bought a day pass while visiting DC and only tried bouldering. It's a large and nice facility, with a well outfitted workout space and a huge roped climbing area.

My experience with the bouldering area was mediocre, though - many of the holds are old and worn smooth, as well as caked in chalk, so I found it slippery and difficult to climb at my usual level. I also wasn't a fan of the setting, at least at my level (v1-v3) - not very creative or fun, and felt like every climb required the same 4 moves and a lot of big reaches. I was also constantly slipping off even jugs, which made me worried about taking a weird fall.

My level obviously limits my options, but I've visited many climbing gyms where I was able to have a ton of fun and do a diverse array of climbs at my level, and this one was just meh. Maybe the setting is better at higher levels, but they are definitely phoning it in on the beginner grades, which is a shame.

Me and my partner were in from the Bay Area and decided to check out this gym to compare to the gyms in our area, and we were thrilled we did. The lady at the front desk was super nice and helped us get settled in for first Friday and we then got to climbing. The routes were awesome and there were some holds that we haven't seen before at our local gyms and it was awesome to try everything. Also loved the bouldering area being its own thing away from the top rope. The members were really nice and welcoming and we really felt at home by the end of the session. If I lived here I would be a member in a heartbeat, both the top rope and bouldering areas were very large and you won't get bored easily.

Erin is an amazing yoga teacher with lessons At six thirty in the morning on tuesdays and furthers.
The gym is much smaller than the one in Columbia or Rockville and I couldn't figure out where to park. Everything is significantly Smaller including the climbing walls, yoga room and the gym. In order to get to the gym you need to. Go down to flights of stairs.

Gym is clean and staff is helpful. Their routes are graded fairly and have good range for all Climbing levels. Only complaint is I wish the holds were cleaned between sets, as the chalk is pretty caked into a lot of them.

The facility was great! There’s a huge variety of TR and boulder routes. The staff were very friendly and helpful when I was taking my belay certification test. It was my first time at this gym, and I really enjoyed it.

It was a little crowded and hard to find a route, but that’s almost a given when coming to a climbing gym in the evening. I wish the bouldering area was larger, but the routes were still fun! I hope to come back in the future.

I really enjoyed this gym. I was traveling from out of town and hit the boulder area. There were a ton of routes over a wide range of grades. Kudos to the route setters who had great variety in styles and types of routes making them a lot of fun. New favorite gym for bouldering when I visit DC.

Parking is odd. That is my only negative comment about this place. One of the best climbing gyms I have been to. Bouldering area is huge and I loved it. They have an awesome spread of difficulty. Any climber would be comfortable here.

Enjoyed the space and setting here. And the staff was really friendly. The bouldering walls have a lot of cave, arch, and inverted slopes that made the routes more physical overall. There were still a lot of variety.

Movement was a great place to climb. There were plenty of routes for all skill levels. Avery was five stars as he showed us how to tie our knots and encouraged us on how to successfully make it to the top. Facility was clean, staff friendly and parking garage easily accessible. We will return and bring the kids next time.

As a long term member I love the staff and quality of the climbs at the gym. What I don’t love is the continuous membership hikes to fund the expansion and acquisitions of new gyms. Also not a fan of waiting in line to use the one single use bathroom because the women’s room toilets are out of order. This is not acceptable.

Edit: still disappointed 5 out of 11 treadmills out of order and one not working that’s not marked. What is going on?

Immediately after lifting the masks they are allowing dry chalk to be flying around the gym like snow flakes while lacking proper ventilators. I am really disappointed since they've had a number of COVID-19 cases and they mandated masks even while on the treadmill (which I'm not completely against) but yet they allow 90000 people to climb at the same time with insane amounts of chalk dust everywhere. Sadly now I have to quit the gym because I have lung problems, and I'm a pretty fit and healthy individual in my 30s.

The gym is HUGE, and offers a wide variety of walls, training tools and weights. The bouldering area was sweltering hot and seemed to have zero ventilation other than a small shop fan running. Holds were filthy and route-setting was mediocre. For the premium price they charge I would expect a higher standard of cleanliness and air quality.

Weight area and bouldering area is 80 degrees in June. Very stuffy and hot and uncomfortable. Big yikes for a gym!

Edit- 2 weeks later, AC is still broken. Membership fees are increasing! The least management could do is have portable fans or AC. Theres only 1 tiny fan as of now.

Failed the belaying certification because I didn't know they had double backing clips on their cheap harnesses. I've only been belaying for 8 years but what do I know. The guy certifying me said my technique was correct besides me not knowing the terms that they use at their gym which is not standardized between gyms

NO AUTO-BELAYS AT THIS LOCATION
Other than that, I stopped through here on my way from Colorado so, understand that is my reference point; big rock, lots of gyms, Olympic walls, etc.... THIS place was surprisingly amazing! Tons of wall space and friendly climbers. I'm not reviewing the staff because I didn't pay to meet them, I paid to climb, and these walls/routes are first rate.
