We can't thank Mr. Rivas enough! Our son had such a hard time at the beginning adjusting to constructive criticism and staying focused, but after going through the program for about a year we could see tremendous growth from discipline, attitude, and respect! We were unable to commit to staying longer due to other competing priorities, but when we are ready to get back to Karate we know where to go!

It has been a significant adjustment for us to move here from Spain. The training my son Paco receives at Mt Everest Karate Studio has been really beneficial to him. He now feels more confident as a result. Due to Sensei Rivas, the club as a whole acts as a family and welcomes you in. We wholeheartedly recommend this outstanding studio. You won't be let down.

I can not believe I found this place!! As a previous black belt martial artist of a traditional style, I looked for a long time to find somewhere that I could take my children to help them develop into the best versions of themselves AND know how to protect themselves!
I visited many places, some I visited and walked right out the door because of the ‘Americanism’ of what I saw …watered down ‘fun time’….I wanted my kids to learn discipline, gain confidence and all that I gained by practicing traditional arts…
As soon as I walked in to Mount Everest, I knew I was in the right place…just based on the posting of the dojos principles, values, vision and motto.

And then once, I saw Kiyoshi Rivas in action, my initial intuition was validated. As a commanding presence, Kiyoshi strikes the perfect balance on in his interactions with the children (even as young as my smallest who started at age 4). He provides just the right amount of encouragement, support, coaching, correcting, and disciplining, all while requiring excellence in each and every students.

A true traditional martial arts dojo will help your children holistically develop, allowing them to develop the integrity of their own personal being - developing harmony and coherence between mind, body and spirit. This results in such intangible benefits of developing his/her character and own personal energy field that are truly priceless….they will have lasting skills, development of character and spirit that will serve him/her for their entire lifetime!
- we absolutely love how our dojo is rooted in traditions of being a true warrior, becoming a master of head + heart.
Come check it out for yourself and see!
Plus the rates are super affordable, especially for the level of service we are getting.

As a parent, I am thrilled with how Karate, and Master Rivas's teaching over the past 2.5 years, have helped developed my son's ability to focus his mind and body. Before Karate, my son had a difficult time staying on task and remaining focused on anything for more than a couple minutes. His body was always busy and the kid could not physically remain still. We were going through the process with doctors with possibily getting him diagnosed with ADHD. Karate has been a huge tool for my son in helping him funnel that energy into productivity and have positive outcomes instead of mental chaos.
We are so glad to have found The Dojo and to have that outlet. Thanks for all you do for the kids, families and community around The Dojo!

We have been a part of the Dojo for the last few months, and our son (7) has truly enjoyed learning from Kyoshi Rivas. This has been his first experience with karate, and I am so grateful that we found this gem in Suffolk! Kyoshi Rivas is so kind and welcoming to each and every one of of the kids that come through the door of the Dojo. He holds them accountable, but also shows so much patience and really gets onto the kids’ level to explain. Our son has improved in listening and focusing tremendously since starting, and we can’t wait to see how he continues to grow and improve!

If you’re looking for a passionate and dedicated Karate Instructor, look no further! MT. Everest Karate Studio has what you’re looking for! With each one of his students, Kyoshi Rivas is firm yet fair. He’s aware that every child develops at a different pace. To ensure that no one feels lost or excluded during class, he takes his time. My daughter was quite reserved and shy. She has become more self-aware since beginning her lessons, and we have seen a significant gain in her confidence. Kyoshi Rivas genuinely connects with all children, while teaching discipline, strength and courage. My daughter enjoys going to her Karate lessons, where she’s learning a variety of skills and techniques all while gaining new friends. We are extremely pleased and we highly recommend Mount Everest Karate Studio.

My daughter has been a student of Kyoshi Rivas for 3 years. I can’t say thank you enough for the confidence and strength that each lesson brings. The structure and discipline of each class translates well to the classroom and to other sports that she plays. Our experience at Mt. Everest has been invaluable to development our daughter’s mental fortitude.

My sons both have ADHD so I try to find activities that help with focus and discipline. This dojo was a perfect fit. Kyoshi Rivas is truly passionate and cares about his students. I don’t mean he babies them either. He is firm but respectful and expects excellence without demanding it. My oldest son has issues with slow processing so language is a struggle but in a few months he has been able to learn twenty Japanese words and remember what they mean. My youngest son struggles with balance but you wouldn’t know it now because he holds his legs up for karate for full minutes without falling. It is impressive to watch the transformation physically and mentally.
My oldest son was quiet and docile but part of this dojo instruction is doing the right thing even if it seems hard. My oldest son deals with bullies at school that pick on weaker children. He never fights but by having the passionate desire to do what is right he speaks up and that is enough. The resolve and authentic sense of self he has developed is impressive. I’m a nurse practitioner so I see many children in practice and discipline is missing in some homes. My mother said it best when she said “I’m raising adults for society not babies for societies burdens”. I live by this. Kyoshi Rivas lives by this philosophy as well. Firmness is not meanness but kids need firm guidance and solid boundaries for good development. This dojo helps with those things.

I highly reccomend this dojo to anyone that's seeking a passionate and dedicated karate instructor! Kyoshi Rivas is not only dedicated to teaching high quality martial arts, but he also emphasizes core values such as integrity and respect. He is also very involved in the community and teaches the kids to give back. I have truly noticed an improvement in my grandson's attitude, especially when it comes setting goals and working hard.

Kyoshi Rivas is very good with training kids to their potential. Karate is so dynamic. It teaches physical fitness, learning to focus, goal setting, and the hard work that is needed to reach these goals. An added bonus is my kids are learning Japanese. Through karate my kids are learning that sometimes practicing is not fun like the fun they have when they are just playing, but the self confidence they gain as they reach their goals is priceless. They have come a long way with Sensei Kyoshi! I highly recommend this dojo.

1990 was the year I moved to Newport News Va. from California. My Brother Kyoshi Rivas was just a brown belt. I remember him training under the guise of Frank Hargrove. The Saturday morning he was testing for his black belt was an early 3am start, he trained really hard and passed his test with utmost perfection, my brother has always been very dedicated, loving, caring, disciplined, and most of all a great friend to me and those around him. He took me under his wing when I ran away from home at the young age of 14 1/2. He taught me a lot of things through out the years, and I cherish our relationship. I can tell you that if your looking for a place to instill confidence, discipline, and a no quit attitude for your kids. LOOK NO FURTHER, ENROLL YOUR KIDS TODAY.

So glad we were introduced to the Dojo at our school event. This studio is not your typical daycare, after school outlet, or giveme class. Mr. Rivas truly cares about individualizing each students experience. He learns their weakness, strengths, passion, and builds their whole character through a family orientated mentorship and incorporates this mentality into his martial arts programs. I mostly love that Students are not passed around from random instructors- we know who and what they are learning. They are receiving group-centered privates lessons he personally teaches. He not only encourages family engagement and community involvement but leads by example in that he is a traveling competitor and holds himself to the same standards as his students. When students ask question, he never hesitates to have meaningful conversations. Caleb enrolled in the basic program in November and has grown in every aspect since then. Over the first few months, he quickly gained confidence in his abilities despite his challenges of having permanent hearing loss and wearing hearing aids. His confidence was proven as has recently decided to try more physically demanding skills and higher commitment programs when asked to join the black belt club to explore weapons. He is learning to develop his ability in auditory instruction, focus and balance while having fun. We can already tell this has helped him in all areas- school, home, neighborhood. His accomplishments at the Dojo helps him keep a can do attitude that he brings with him everywhere.

Our child was on track to need behavioral intervention at school when we started at the dojo. Under the direction of Sensei Rivas our child has since learned to focus, physical and mental control, pushing thru challenges, adherence to rules and teachers, and listening; therefore reducing our potential need for school special services. This dojo has definitely started our child on the right road. Tough love and we love it!

I studied under Carlos Rivas and Kyoshi Perry from 1999-2001. Okinawan style martial arts are true martial arts. Based off of the Shaolin style.

Sensei Carlos is an amazing teacher with the capacity to teach students life long lessons through the art of Karate. 20 years later I am grateful. If you are interested in studying martial arts I could not recommend a better school.

For those who want to complain, first you need to understand that martial arts training is not for everyone. It is not FREE. It is not a place to come and think just because you have seen some martial arts movies, that`s how it goes, and you can tell the instructor how to teach your child. The instructor has the right to refuse you service, or terminate your agreement if he or she chooses. So if you want to come on here and try to make this business look bad, you need to look in the mirror. Be an adult and accept that you were not a good fit for that studio. You have the right to move on. I have been knowing Kyoshi Rivas for many years, and he has always been very professional, teaches very good quality martial arts that you can not put a price on. I have referred many people to his studio, and I think Suffolk is proud to have his studio as an asset to the city. With the knowledge of Kyoshi Rivas, any person that he accepts as a student they should be honored to have the opportunity to train with this great master of the martial arts.

If you are looking for a professional Karate studio, looking for your child to actually EARN their belt, to know all fees up front, and for your child to learn discipline. This is not the place that you are looking for. He is good with the kids.... but that's about it. Save your time and money and go else where. I wished we had done our research before wasting hundreds of dollars.

This school teaches true traditional Japanese karate. The instructor, Kyoshi Rivas, is amazing. Students learn self discipline, focus and confidence while training with him. My children take karate classes and do their karate tournament training at this dojo. His training has helped them win several local, state, regional and national championships. If you're looking to learn REAL karate, this is the place to learn it!

My kids love the dojo. My son has been with Kyoshi Rivas for 6 years and karate has made a difference in his life. He has become more confident and more open. My son is now an honor roll student and is a leader in both the classroom and at the dojo. My husband and I are so impressed that we signed our daughter up as well. Kyoshi Rivas trains his students in traditional Okinawan karate. I love what he has done for my kids so much that I drive all the way from Newport News so that they can attend classes. If anyone is looking for a karate dojo, this is the place to be.
