This is gym is a 10/10! From the staff to the facilities. My partner and I have been attending the Muay Thai kickboxing classes for about 3 weeks now. Robert, the instructor, is super helpful in both the beginner 1-on-1 sessions and the group classes. A membership here is definitely an investment I would recommend.

Phoenix is a great place. Working out really is fun and the people were very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is peaceful. Everyone feels like family here. The instructor was awesome and made sure you did your full workout. The owners are very nice . The front desk guy is very friendly and helpful. . The workouts is great. You can have your personal workout or groups. I love the groups very motivated. From my observation and talking to some ladies who been there over 5 years I really see the result of their strength. I am a beginner but they were much stronger than me. The years paid of with beautiful results.

I am a competitive swimmer and recently joined Phoenix for dryland training exercises.
The strength training classes are probably some of the best strength training workouts I have ever done. It’s great to have Lacy and Casey as coaches to correct form and socialize with other people during these workouts.
Working on my cardio by doing Muay Thai kickboxing classes with Robert has been a ton of fun. And having structure in place during my gym visits makes it easy and enjoyable to go to the gym.
Thanks to Renee and Ethan for putting together an amazing gym and I would suggest others to try out Phoenix!

While there are gyms much closer to where I live, Phoenix's environment is worth the drive. After visiting a few gyms to check our their boxing programs, I decided on Phoenix because the atmosphere is inclusive, friendly and welcoming. Renee and Ethan (owners), Yamil (main coach), Robert and Brett (other coaches with whom I've worked), and my peers are all extremely encouraging, caring, patient and supportive. Instruction is constructive, thoughtful and pushes just enough to make you feel like you've accomplished a goal after every session. I'm still new-ish to the RVA and have only been going to Phoenix for a few months, yet the gym has quickly offered a sense of community and grounding for this Midwest transplant.

I wish there was a more affordable option for memberships. it’s great for people who do multiple activities like bjj or boxing as well as strength training. But it would be great if there was a plan for people choosing one out of the various activities phoenix offers or people who go 3 days a week instead of 5 or 7 or a student plan. As a 20 year old working part time paying for my own plan, i kept having to justify to family and friends how much i spend monthly as they stare at me in disbelief. my justification was that “it’s like a sport” since i was always training to compete and “it keeps me accountable” and also because it is a great place and great environment. I’ve never been as strong as when i lifted at phoenix. But the price is just unrealistic for someone who doesn’t work full time or is not at a high paying job. I left for unrelated reasons and i plan/ed to come back but i just don’t know if it’s a smart financial decision. Maybe i need a college education and a new job before coming back lol. it is disappointing though because I love this gym and want to keep training there. It doesn’t affect my rating for this gym because it’s truly amazing but it’s hard to refer people especially my age to this gym. I still live at home and i don’t think i can juggle the price of this gym as well as an apartment in this economy even if i worked full time. But if i was rich i would stay here forever. love the coaches, love my gym friends (i miss rebecca :(…)

I joined in March at the insistence and encouragement of my friends. Nearly 40 year old mom here, I generally dislike gyms and have little experience with strength training. Hard to put into words how much this gym means to me. I came to Phoenix 4 years ago hoping to lose weight, get stronger and be consistent with exercising (something I hated to do). Little did I know that this place would become my 2nd home, a place that I truly love and met some of the most important people in my life. Ethan and Renee have created a space that provides everything you could ask for in a gym. Smaller classes and 1 on 1 training with amazing coaches? Check! A place that promotes positivity, that pushes you and holds you accountable? Check! Celebrates all of your milestones? Check! A place to have fun with great people while working out? Check! Unlike any other gym you will encounter! They cap membership to ensure that you have the best experience possible. Everybody knows your name which puts a great personal touch on the place.
All the trainers and martial arts coaches are kind, patient, and will stay after to make sure your questions are answered. Going on a trip? They are kind enough to give you a workout for a small hotel gym.

If you’ve ever signed up for a gym membership with good intentions but then never showed up.. this is the gym for you. I’ve always struggled with low motivation to get off the couch, but since signing up at Phoenix I’m now attending sessions multiple times a week! The schedule provided makes it easy to plan and be held accountable if you miss a class. I showed up here as an adult knowing absolutely nothing about martial arts and was welcomed in with open arms! Coaches Robert and Yamil are excellent and make this a place where anyone at any skill level can be comfortable. It’s easy to forget you’re working hard when you spend an hour jamming to some great tunes and learning how to (safely) throw a punch! You could stick with your old gym and feel guilty about letting your membership collect dust or you can show up here, meet all of your goals, and have fun doing it!

I've been training at Phoenix Fitness & Martial Arts for the past few months and the experience has been great. The coaches are clearly knowledgable and are invested in seeing your progress. Regardless of your skill level, the coaches and staff create a positive environment where you can learn while pushing yourself. The facilities are clean and classes are well-structured, offering a good balance between improving technique and conditioning. This is a great gym. My work schedule is NOT easy due to working in healthcare but Phoenix Fitness is very understanding! I appreciate that a lot because it’s a hard balance for me. I love the boxing and the instructors are great! I also love the fact people are very comfortable in this gym. There are also so many options which to choose from! The owners Ethan and Renee are wonderful and just nice people! This is the most I have felt comfortable going to a gym and I don’t feel pressure! Just like joining any gym I was nervous and was self conscious of my current skill level. However at Phoenix there is a much different feel. Every time I walk in there is a warm welcoming from either my man Jackson who keeps that place rolling! Or Renee or Ethan who just feel like long time friends! Every encounter before starting a workout sets a wonderful tone. Every coach there is incredibly friendly and supportive. The two I spend the most time with being Yamil (boxing) and Casey (lifting) are two of the greatest role models in my life. Each being outstanding in their craft and deeply knowledgeable. At first I was coming to get a workout but later I was coming because of them and how motivating and encouraging they are. The best atmosphere to succeed and honestly changing your life for the better. If you’re on the fence about what gym is a good fit I highly urge to check out Phoenix because I can’t stress enough how immaculate everyone here is. For context I am one of those people who workout for a week and I give in, but currently I started in July of 24 and I’m still consistent at January of 25 with no plans of changing that. I’m grateful to be a member here 😊

First gym I've been to in years that actually feels like they care you are there. Their classes are top notch, a good workout, and most importantly fun. The instructors will take time to work with you one on one to ensure you are getting everything you can out of the class, and really focus on technique so that you get all the benefits of the workout. Even the other clientele are friendly and willing to work with you to help you be the best you can be. There is no "gym-timidation" here and I highly recommend checking them out. 5/5 stars and I would give them 6 stars if I could.

Amazing local gym. I enjoy a good family owned business vs. a franchise operation. Ethan and Renee made me feel welcomed on day one, and quickly got me acclimated with the trainers and the classes. Class size is never too large, and the trainers actually listened to my needs to prevent injury.
This is not a "meathead" gym where you have to be a jacked 20-something in order to hang.
Phoenix is always immaculately clean and well organized, and rarely is a piece of equipment out of place.
If you are serious about weight training or BJJ, this is the home for you.

This is an amazing gym. I find it is definitely worth the price to have access to coach-led group weight training and gym session, coach-led Muay Thai and boxing, and coach-led BJJ. Furthermore, the class sizes are not too large, which is a plus. This gym has amazing merch as well, and I find myself looking good in it thanks to the workouts this gym puts me through.

This may be the first gym I've gone to that not only supports me but also challenges me. I haven’t been working out at Phoenix very long but it’s quickly become somewhat of a sanctuary for me. I have no background in boxing or muy thai but I’ve quickly learned quite a bit from the help and support of the trainers and other students alike. Everyone is so so welcoming, encouraging, and accepting here, it’s a wonderful environment in general but particularly in regard to a martial arts/fitness gym. Classes are the highlight of my week and getting the opportunity to forge new connections with different people because of these classes has been really rad, just like all the folks over at Phoenix! No matter what it is you’re looking to get into, they will meet you where you are and make sure you experience is comfortable and catered to your needs. Truly spectacular. If you’re considering a gym but are hesitant for any reason, this is the ideal place to spend your time in my humble opinion!! These guys are the coolest!

I first signed up for the strength and cardio class and it was fantastic. It provided me with a wealth of knowledge about various exercises and the proper techniques for performing them. The cardio section was challenging, yet it motivated me to exert more effort, especially with a coach present. Cassy played a key role in enhancing my learning experience in the class.
The boxing session was particularly demanding as it was my first time trying boxing (my arms and shoulders felt so heavy after doing only 15 min of boxing exercises!). Coach Kayla demonstrated great competence, expertise, and patience with her students.
Overall, I’m really satisfied with how the classes are organized, enabling beginners to progress at their own pace while receiving valuable feedback from the coaches. Phoenix Fitness also has a certain charm you don’t see in bigger commercial gyms. Everyone there has a goal to improve their physical health with the support of other’s like minded individuals. As a beginner I did not feel any intimidation or insecurities when joining classes. front desk service is warm, they remember your name, and there is no ambiguity about their fees and membership procedures.

I joined Phoenix about six weeks ago. Renee was very nice and upfront about pricing and other aspects of the gym in the sign-up process. Their Strength and Cardio classes, which I attend 3x a week, have been excellent. Lacy keeps things super fun and offers wonderful encouragement, education on the exercises, and corrections on form. Also, because the classes are small, I am motivated to go every time because I know my absence will be noticed. Their facilities are well-maintained and there are always clean towels available. The locker rooms and showers also look well-stocked and I would definitely make use of them if I did not live 5 min away. By far the best gym I have joined and looking forward to gaining strength and increased fitness here!

This place deserves more than 5 stars. I simply cannot say enough good things about the gym and everything this place stands for. I have been here about a week and I already feel like I am apart of a family. The facility itself is so well kept and clean. As soon as you walk in the door, you can feel the motivation and energy running through your veins! Ethan and Renee have done such an excellent job making this place what it is. I have checked out other MMA gyms before but none of them have brought me the same amount of fulfillment as Phoenix. The dedicated one on one time prior to starting classes gives a level of encouragement and confidence before jumping into a first class and every single gym member here is so friendly and welcoming from the moment you meet. If you're looking for a gym, this is the place to go. They have so much to offer with a variety of classes that fit everyone's schedule, and no matter what class you take, each instructor has a plethora of knowledge to share that you just won't find elsewhere. You'll feel like you can conquer the world after your first class but in the most humble way. If you're thinking about joining, you gotta come here, the atmosphere is so healthy and warm. My son has been going to Phoenix Fitness & Martial Arts since summer 2023 and it's been a great experience for him. He needed something to be a part of that allowed him to set fitness goals for himself without the direct competition of most organized sports, which he did not enjoy. It's the only place we've found that had a youth strength training program rather than an adults program that didn't allow for his needs -- physical, mental, and social. Although he focuses on strength training, we love that he has other options like boxing, jiu jitsu, etc. The trainer, Casey, has been a great fit for him, supporting and quietly challenging our son without exceeding his boundaries or pushing too hard. While the owners, Ethan and Renee, have gone out of their way to make us feel welcome and are incredibly responsive and helpful. Our son goes after school, three days a week, and often grumbles going in, but he rarely leaves without a smile on his face or feeling good about what he's accomplished. We're grateful to have found Phoenix Fitness & Martial Arts and highly recommend!

Class size is kept small to make sure you get a good amount of individualized instruction, and large enough to offer enough variety to cover a range of skill levels and goals. As someone who is an introvert I was apprehensive about joining group exercise sessions and was pleasantly surprised. From the very first session Coach Lacy, Renee and Ethan and everyone in the group have been very welcoming and supportive. Exercise is the primary focus. Phoenix FMA understands the needs of its members and has created a welcoming and user-friendly environment. The gym layout is well organized and it’s always spotless. I had always been struggling to going back to gym, but not anymore. As a beginner, who has not a lifted a tiny dumbbell before, I’m proud of where I’m at today. I like how they have laid out a workout plan that works for everyone.

I’ve had three personal training sessions and three group classes. The coaches are great, I’ve worked with Jessica and Robert. They are so nice and push you based on your goals. Before the group class I was so nervous and intimidated by the others’ experience, but everyone on the mat made me feel so welcome and encouraged me. The positive and motivational energy they create at the gym really makes me feel like I can reach my goals without feeling inferior as a new martial arts student. The group classes are small enough that you get individual guidance from the coaches. Their communication at the front desk is top notch. Ethan is always spreading positive vibes and motivating anyone around. Renee doesn’t know that she saved the day this morning when I forgot my body wash. She has the ladies locker room and shower stocked with everything a girl could need. You def get a good bang for your buck. Don’t go out to eat every weekend. Use the money to build confidence, muscle, meet knew friends, learn something new, and punch people. I’ve never left not dripping in sweat. I’ve never left feel unsatisfied with my workout. I’ve never left without someone making me smile.

I travel a lot for my job and my work week always varies from daytime or nighttime work. I happened to work in the Henrico area for nighttime work and stayed at a hotel. I’m not getting any younger (51 years old), so I’m trying to make adjustments to my health by keeping active in the martial arts. Once I arrived in the area, I did a search on Muay Thai academies and Phoenix Fitness & Martial Arts pulled up. I messaged the owners, Ethan and Renee Chandler, and made arrangements to train in the Muay Thai class on Monday evening at 7 pm and Tuesday afternoon at 12 pm. Once I arrived, I was greeted by Renee and she showed me a quick tour of the facility. To say the facility is incredible is an understatement. The facility is your one stop shop for training for health or competing in any competitive sport. They have an amazing Muay Thai instructor, Robert Bane, he’s very in depth on explaining and executing the technique for the class for the Monday evening and Tuesday afternoon classes. I had an amazing opportunity to also train with Ethan and he kept me on my toes during the training and sparring session for the Tuesday afternoon class. I haven’t consistently trained in almost 3-4 years, but the students and instructor had patience with me to work at my own pace and they made me feel like I hadn’t stopped training. If you’re thinking about training again or taking up Muay Thai/Boxing/BJJ for the first time, Phoenix Fitness & Martial Arts will be a great opportunity for you to start.

I also want to add that I took the boxing and BJJ classes. Boxing class, taught by Coach Kayla, is a fast/high paced technical class. Coach Kayla is an excellent boxing instructor with experience and knowledge. BJJ class, taught by Coach Jimmy, is an excellent class for anyone thinking of starting. Both instructors for these classes are absolutely great at teaching and explaining the drills.

I fell in love with the structure of the center. I talked to Renee initially to express my interest and goal. She was very attentive and didn't force any classes for me. Instead she mentioned what aligns to my interest and ofcourse what the center offers in terms of martial arts and personal training.
My coach Robert Bane is phenomenal. I am already running into a month of completion with Muay Thai Kickboxing and he has pushed me to learn techniques and challenges me a great deal. He makes it an absolutely fun workout. The great thing is even Ethan(He and Renee owns the gym) is always a great source of inspiration and he always encourages everyone in gym.

After meeting with Renee I had all my questions answered, wasn’t pushed into any lengthy or overpriced contracts, and showed everything they had to offer. Since joining and working with Casey I’ve built better confidence with weight lifting, gotten stronger, and love the encouraging environment! I never was much of a gym goer. I’ve had trouble staying consistent and engaged. Additionally, I have never been much of a violent individual and assumed martial arts were for people that planned to be in fights at some point.
However, Phoenix provided a welcoming and friendly environment for me to participate in jiu-jitsu and strength training lessons. There are great, experienced instructors here and I never felt threatened by the people I’d practice with. It’s great exercise and I love that I can work my mind AND body at the same time. If you want to stay fit and solve puzzles at the same time, jiu-jitsu might be right for you.
They were also great about making sure I came to class. If I missed too many classes, they’d send a text over asking me to come back in that week. I’ve been far more consistent at this gym than any other I’ve been to.
Coach Casey is a great strength training coach. Often I wasn’t sure of the correct form or weight to use for a particular set, and Casey was always very understanding and patient with me. He’s always happy to reexplain a weight movement or help you find the right weights for you.
Between my jiu-jitsu classes and strength training classes, every week I’d look forward to returning and seeing familiar faces at the gym. I didn’t feel like another person in a warehouse lifting weights, but instead I was bettering myself physically and mentally with people I cared about.
Overall I can't recommend this gym enough. Even if you aren't sure it's right for you, you should drop by and just try it out. You might be surprised like I was.
tl;dr: This is a great gym where anyone can make friends, better themselves physically and mentally, and feel great while doing it.

I've trained at several martial arts gyms in the past and can say of all of them Phoenix has the best atmosphere. Most gyms I've seen either don't provide an adequate challenge to their students resulting in poor self defense skills and minimal health benefits, or throw you to the wolves and expect you to spar heavily with experienced fighters. Phoenix meets you where you are in martial arts by providing you with the right level of training. I've been a member of well over a dozen gyms in my lifetime. Every single one has claimed to have a "sense of community." And until recently, I would have said that every single one was completely lying. Whenever I heard this, I rolled my eyes and thought "yeah, sure you do."
Until I found Phoenix fitness.
The owners and trainers really take the time to learn who their members are and make them feel welcome. They treat everyone as an individual and make you WANT to come back for a workout class to see them. They listen to feedback and will even add classes if enough people want them and they can work it into their schedule. I've been a member here for well over a year now and there's never been a point where I have felt unwelcome or uncomfortable. This is truly a fun place to be.
And that's saying nothing of the quality of the instruction either. If you want to get stronger, you'll have every opportunity to do so. The strength trainers are knowledgeable, safe, and communicative. If you want to practice a martial art, they've got you too. Coach Bane is meticulous in his coaching, always prioritizing safety over power when learning punches and kicks. In jiu jitsu, having access to as many as three black belts at the same time provides you a trove of information for how to improve your game. As someone who started this sport from basically scratch, I never felt like I was being thrown into a situation where I was unprepared. Even when I got beat (often) I knew what I was supposed to be doing. And that is not how I have felt at other gyms when training the same stuff.
Phoenix Fitness is THE best gym in the Richmond area. Hands down. Full stop. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.

Once the secret is out, everyone will come in and sign up for this gym.
They offer personalized one on one training. Family owned fitness center that takes and treasures each client, paring the trainer with the client that will motivate, train and educate the proper way to excerise.
Group classes are available or should I say team classes are available,too.
I have seen trainers working with children building strength and more importantly, confidence.
Personally speaking, Casey has given me the ability to deadlift, bench press - building the muscles and using the proper technique to gain muscle strength.(He's my trainer and will push me til I promise him that I'm not quitting and he's stuck with me.)
Lacy - he's the one if you are not sure about individual training and need to start in a group - come watch the diverse group of people in the morning work together doing various types of training and supporting each other.
I love this gym! It's family environment. It's trash talking about each other. It's celebrating birthdays. It's celebrating milestones of activities you achieve.
It's about respect.
Renee and Ethan have built a solid team. They value their clients and make sure the areas are clean.
So now the secret is out and they will have to expand!

It’s been a little over a year and the results are amazing.. Best I’ve felt since my college days. Casey is a great trainer. Motivates me and keeps things interesting. I”m there 6 days a week, some days on my own for cardio. It’s a welcoming non judgmental environment I’ve become disciplined with my fitness. My wife calls me slim fit. Joining Phoenix Fitness two years ago has been the best health/fitness decision of my life and an incredible return on my investment of time and membership fees. Phoenix has my highest recommendation and support.
Pros:
1) Ethan and Renee are fantastic and care about each member.
2) The cleanest gym around (and that’s a big deal)
3) Fantastic coaches who get to know you and provide individual coaching even in a group setting.
4) Great choice of classes and times that can fit any schedule in addition to plenty of open gym times.
5) Excellent equipment
6) You meet super friendly and supportive individuals in your classes - just regular people doing their best on their own fitness journey in a very supportive environment.
Cons:
1) They do not pay for the new clothes you will need to buy after dropping weight (but that’s OK!)

I absolutely love Phoenix Fitness. I was looking for a gym when I moved down here that offered boxing and was very happy to learn that I could do strength training at the gym too. It didn't take long for me to also join in on the Muay Thai Kickboxing classes. All the trainers and staff there are super professional and friendly. It's perfect for people who have been in the gym all their lives or just starting out. The class sizes are small and everyone in the classes are very friendly and approachable. Joining this gym was the best decision when I moved to Richmond.

BEST GYM EVER!!! I have been going to Phoenix since it opened and loving every minute of it! I had been to many different gyms prior to this one, and all of them felt too big and like I was just another member number, but at Phoenix, I am treated like family and really spoiled by the small class size numbers making it feel like I have my own personal trainer every time I go. The personal attention and assistance I receive while working out is above and beyond anything I've ever experienced elsewhere, and the trainers are so knowledgeable and professional. I always feel safe trying new strength moves and weight that may be out of my comfort zone. The trainers safely push me to achieve new goals and feel successful in the gym. I truly can't say enough good things about Phoenix!

I found Phoenix Fitness while scrolling aimlessly on Facebook. As I was scrolling through their page I was instantly drawn to their style of training specifically Muay Thai and Boxing which involves cardio, technique and light sparring. I've been a member now for over a month and aside from a 1 week vacation I've been going EVERYDAY!! I love the energy of the coaches and owners, Ethan & Renee, it has been a pleasure to work and grow with. I highly recommend this place!!

Phoenix offers a unique gym experience. I’d been doing strength training for a while, but had never tried the major compound movements like deadlifts and squats because I’d never been trained on how to use the rack. I joined Phoenix to step up my strength training and their small group training has been perfect for me. They have awesome trainers who teach you all the movements and give you a refresher at the start of each class. It is an extremely supportive environment where the owners, coaches, and fellow trainers all support you. It is the least intimidating and yet most intense gym experience I’ve ever had. I’m excited to continue my progress and try some of their other classes (like martial arts) in the coming months. Well done to Ethan and Renee (the owners) for creating something really unique and special!

Great gym to learn martial arts, kick boxing or strength training! All the instructors are very helpful and encouraging. The class size is small which means everyone can get coach’s attention to improve on their techniques. Gym has many classes throughout the week and one of the cleanest gyms I have seen. 👍🏼

I’ve been taking the total strength class for a few months now and I love it! The class size is manageable, providing coach Casey the opportunity to engage with you during your sets and assist with any corrections to movement. I have lower back issues and coach Casey is great about giving different alternative exercises to ensure there’s no additional strain on my back. I also like how encouraging people are during class, it’s not unusual to hear/see us cheering someone on as they drive to complete a set.
