I felt the need to write a review of the Planet Fitness in Salem. I actually live in Christiansburg and have been a Planet Fitness member for about 6 years. My club in Christiansburg recently "upgraded" a lot of their equipment to "plate loaded" type while eliminating many of the machines with cables and pins to set the weight. I personally prefer not to use the plate loaded equipment, as it seems many other people feel the same way it makes it difficult to to get a good workout when so many of the machines are occupied with other members either using them or simply sitting on them playing on their phones. (we all know how that is) Anyway, I decided it would be worth the trip (25 miles) to Salem to see if this club would be a better option. I am so glad I did and although it doesn't make sense to drive to Salem 6 days a week (Saturday is rest day) it is definitely is worth the trip 2 or 3 times a week! I have only been making the drive and this new routine for a couple of months now but I plan on continuing for many reasons. From day one the employees there made me feel as though I have been there for years, with a smile and greeting as soon as I walk in the door. A special shout out to Becca and Darion that seem to have the same schedule as I do. It is easy to see they enjoy working together and always seem to stay busy keeping the gym / equipment / and restrooms clean. The atmosphere in the gym is comfortable and spacious with enough equipment that I haven't had to stand around at all waiting for machines to use. It actually seems like the members here respect other members and don't occupy machines unnecessarily while using their phones. If you are thinking about a new membership to any gym.... I strongly suggest Planet Fitness in Salem and if you choose "Black Card" membership ( way less than a dollar a day) you can go to any Planet Fitness in any town anytime and you can even bring a workout partner (guest) with you as often as you want or "every time" if you want FOR FREE!! If you are tired of paying $40 a month for gym memberships and an extra $7 to use a hydro massage or tanning bed or having to pay a "day pass" to bring a guest... come to Planet Fitness in Same and GET IT ALL for half the cost!

It’s a gym. It has everything you need. I wish the space was used better. Barely a “stretch & abs” area but if you have the ability to warm up at home this is perfect. I didn’t see any employees cleaning equipment or the floors. I personally like the orange ave location. There’s space to not be interrupted, alot of room, super clean. Nun the less it’s a good backup gym

I started going to this gym not that long ago, I have never had a gym membership prior to this one. I was so worried about not knowing how to use the machines properly, judgement, an overwhelming feeling of insecurity. Every time I have gone, the gym is SO CLEAN! This was a big concern for me, as I have an infant at home I was worried of bringing germs back home too. The staff does an amazing job of keeping everything very tidy. One staff member that stood out to me was Monique! (I hope didn’t mess up her name) She has gone ABOVE AND BEYOND to make me feel comfortable everytime she sees me. She answers all questions with enthusiasm, and takes the time out of her shift to explain everything to me. I felt very comfortable in her presence, and I can tell she is a major asset to Planet Fitness in this location. She is so sweet and I look forward to seeing her on my visits! Monique, if you see this, keep being you! You are amazing! Beautiful inside and out!

I have been a member of Planet fitness for a few years. I usually go to the Roanoke location. I recently went to the Salem location. Upon entering, I checked myself and my son in because the two employees were busy talking. They did not greet either of us but then because they weren’t paying attention started to harass my son on whether he belonged there. Even though he said that he was with me, they did not believe him so I had to go and verify that he was my guest. I really feel that if Mori and Daria were doing their job. This would not have occurred and would not have made both myself and my son feel uncomfortable.

This is something that I know is a touchy subject for a lot of people, I am a big critic of the company, I think it's very hypocritical for them to claim to be judgement free, when they judge people who like to work out, and most people that I have met had a choice when they were teenagers , party and do drugs,or go to the gym to excape a bad situation. It's toned down its liberal ideas a lot, but there are a lot of liberal people who go there. I am a conservative person, and I hear people talking about how evil conservatives are, sounds like judgement to me. There are 3 locations in the area I live in, and I can say that I have issues with two locations with the staff, not quite sure what it is, they are very short with me, I just ignore it and go on. But I never had any verbal conflicts with any staff members. My only complaint is I work weird hours, and the gyms are not 24/7 they close at 9 pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Well I do the treadmill every other day starting at level 4 hill climb to eventually level 8 then back down to 4 on speed 3.2 for 60 minutes and same thing every other day for 30 minutes. On the 30 minute days I do 50 sit ups at home and do 5 different exercise machines on those days. I work out every day. I've been doing this for 2 and a half months and went from 329 to 265 as of 2 weeks ago. Thank you Planet Fitness for changing my life. 💪 😊

The facility is pretty clean but there's room for improvement on stocking soaps and sanitizer, as well as the dirty floors, glass windows, and gross tanning beds. The staff isn't very helpful and if you go during lunch you'll have creepy old dudes watching you and after school, all the children hog the mirror and free weights so you can't work out. After 2 years of going to this gym instead of letting me pause my membership, they made me come in and cancel. When I went to cancel they shamed me. Once I'm ready to resume my workout I definitely will not be going back to this location.

After 17 years of going to Golds Gym (Airport) I made the move to Planet Fitness... and I'm so glad I did. The facility at PF Salem is always clean, the equipment is nice and well taken care of. Any time something breaks, they service it quickly. They invest in keeping things properly maintained... replacing the bulbs in the tanning beds on a schedule is one example. The staff is super nice and mornings wouldn't be the same without Keesha & Lauren :-) Also super nice that the Black membership is portable and I can work out across town when needed -or- bring a guest. All around, PF Salem earns an A+ and I wish I had made the move as soon as they opened this location.

I travel for three months out of the year all throughout the United States. And I’m a black card member. So far the best location and Jim that I’ve been to is in Salem Virginia. It was the cleanest facility. It smelled great. The staff was very energetic and helpful and showed me throughout the gym. On top of that the showers were the best and cleanest. The people are amazing but the cleanliness is subpar by far. You never see anyone (staff) wiping down equipment. The bathrooms are constantly dirty and out of soap to wash your hands. Again it’s a beautiful place with great potential but the lack of cleanliness is an issue. I think most just deal with it because of the price but regardless of price it should still be cleaned more regularly.

The staff is wonderful and the gym is always super clean. It’s never terribly busy when I go but the only complaint I have is that it’s always so warm in the gym. There’s been times when walking around I feel warm air instead of cool air. While working out I always get very over heated and start to get lightheaded because there’s no cold air blowing to get cooled down between sets. It’s a gym so I believe it should be kept cold at the very least. When I go to the Salem location unfortunately I have to lessen my workout intensity or else I’ll get too over heated. I almost have to step outside to cool down because there’s no place to cool down in the building. I regularly go to the Salem location as well as Christiansburg and I have to say Christiansburg keeps a perfect temperature for a gym at their location. Ive spoken to other people about the issue of it being too warm at Salem so I’m certain I’m not alone. If they’ve only turn on the AC then it would be the perfect gym because both the staff and equipment is top tier.

Only complaint I have is that it seems to be a teenage hangout.
I saw like 6 teenage boys all walking around together. I'm used to people in two's to spot each other, but 6 kids is a bit much. They should split teenagers up when that many children are hanging out together. Machines a clean, like brand new, in great working condition. Saw afew people, especially ones in there 30's and 40's that didn't disinfect the machines after use.

A really nice gym for the price. It's definitely worth the money that you pay. Real cheap! Some equipment is badly worn and needs to be replaced, but still worth it. Only $10/mo + yearly membership fee of $110, which makes it ~$20/mo. Update: 3mths in and there's now an influx of teenagers here taking up most of the equipment due to a deal they have going on. Will be switching to the Salem YMCA

Hooray for the PF "Black Card" membership that gets me a work out at any Planet Fitness in the network! I did the 30 minute circuit - legs, arms, crunches, curls - and then hit the shower. A nice dose of endorphins and now I'm ready to hit the road again.

It is a very nice gym with friendly workers. It would be perfect if there was more water pressure in the showers, and if there was an extra clock near the far end of the building. Otherwise it is as good as it gets!

Clean and friendly staff. Haven’t been to a large chain gym before so this is all new. I haven’t used the full amenities that come with the black membership but based on the gym and equipment alone, I’d recommend it.

Disappointed, as a former member with Planet Fitness member. Upon coming in to sign up the two ladies behind the counter refused to set up an account. “It so much easier for you to do it online “ but we need you to check in here, they walk you to a tablet which just sends you a link (after completing I realized it was saying we took a tour, which we never did) when attempting to set up online, the fee is slightly higher but continued. We were going to set up our membership, but I don’t share my checking information, which I don’t use with anyone. I will use a major credit card for automatic payments. However, they insisted they would need two major credit cards on file for payment as a back up… I think it’s a bit excessive to expect two cards on file. (Excuse: so you won’t get a late fee if your first payment doesn’t go through) Considering I don’t carry balances on my cards but they want a back up. SMH! Especially after seeing other reviews of the payment issues. We left and set up a membership at a competitor without any issues. Actually, got free month for both of us and one free annual fee. This location isn’t as friendly as other our previous location or any location we ever visited.

The salem planet fitness is a clean, high quality gym! I would drive over 20 minutes to come to this gym instead of any others. The bathrooms are big and always so spotless. There is lots of space between each machine. I love the staff at this planet fitness and they are always so helpful!
