Last Friday afternoon, May 10, 2025, around 4pm, I witnessed the most beautiful experience at this YMCA, often not seen or overlooked. I was working out in the area where the Trainer assists others and this very nice lady Trainer, with the beautiful head wrap, was assisting another client. I watched as she demonstrated stretching exercises and lunges, etc. The joy and laughter they both exhibited was infectious. I thought to myself if more people could see how much fun, excitement, and joy can be achieved in working out and getting fit, it would eliminate the misnomer that getting healthy is not fun, painful, and miserable. Those two ladies had such a great time and for me as an observer, it reemphasized the value of the Portsmouth YMCA, connecting people from all over the world, and making a difference. I stopped by the Trainer's desk and told her I would make this review and so now I have! Thank you for blessing me on that day!

I joined the YMCA on high street in Portsmouth a little over a year ago and it's been great !! not only do I get some exercise It's been wonderful meeting new people and getting out of the house sense I retired a couple of years ago. Had a trainer when I first started but the last trainer Pamela she was just great learn a lot from her thanks!

I entered Pamela M.'s Silver Sneakers class using a cane and weak from recovering from a knee joint replacement surgery. Ms. Pamela M. excellent teaching and exercises have helped me to become stronger. She is very attentive to make sure we perform each exercise correctly. I do not enter class with a cane anymore! Visited on a business trip. Staff were friendly and the facility was maintained well, overall. Locker rooms are a bit dated and could use some cleaning, but I have seen much worse. Showers are old-school communal style, if that is a concern for you. This is definitely a facility geared toward an older crowd. On a positive note, though, if you like to lift weights, there is not much crowding in that area. Machines and cardio equipment were pretty busy, but not excessive.

It's very...Portsmouth. Being there, you definitely know you're in Portsmouth. People going there should get a discount since the hot tubs are down indefinitely and have been for months. I'll be going to the Taylorbend one from now on.

I don't understand why the price for swim lessons has gone up so much when the instructors at this location cancel last minute (like youre in the pool waiting for them at class time and they text you theyres no class) so often with no reimbursement or make up classes. I'm FLOORED the kids swim lessons cost 90$!!!!! WILD!!! I will also say both of my sons took swim lessons here for a year and they are both STILL at a beginner level. Time to cancel our ymca membership.

Was told this location is better for older people and not so great for kids; now I understand why. Must be great if you're older than 16.

The womens locker room says 16+ only so the first time we went I used the girls locker room with my daughter. Its bare bones. No hooks or chairs in the showers, no stalls, only 2 have curtains, no swimsuit spinner or hairdryer, and 2 very thin benches. One changing curtain and no chair in there either. I don't want my daughter's clothes on the floor or have to carry a dripping swimsuit through the lobby.

Checked out the womens locker room today and it has everything I expected from a Y so I used it today with my 4 yr old. A staff member came in and saw my daughter's floaty while we were in the shower. She told me the 16+ policy and I responded with my reasoning. She said, "I don't know what to tell you except to bring your own hairdryer." I said ok and thank you (still showering).

While we were changing she comes back in and loudly asks everyone if there are any more under 16 in there. Comes over and tells me theres a family changing room by the 2 pools. I tell her "ok, thank you" again, but now felt slightly attacked. Did she want me go to the other dressing room naked? She already told me, so the second time seemed unnecessary. Also, from what I saw, the family changing room is just a bathroom, no shower.

I understand the reasons for the 16+ rule given the sauna and whirlpool. Just expected the same amenities to be available to families and not only 16+. Won't be returning until its clear families are fully welcomed.

My son was going here for before and after care. I complained several times as some weeks money wasn’t taken out then I’d be double charged without notice, email or reason. Even after going threw my banking statements and cash receipts I was up to date! Per Liz Moore who told me she was corporate and there was no one else to speak to about this matter I owed $492 which wasn’t true and she just kept talking in circles. Per the agreement I signed my account was to be charged once a week which was a Wednesday. Several times it was also charged on a Friday and 4 times double charged! Definitely not what I signed up for. Now I have to cancel my banking account because even after the suspended care and I was given a notice it would 03/27/2023 I was again double charged on 4/6/2023! I refuse to pay something I’ve paid for already or we talked down to because of the negligence of Liz Moore not adhering to my agreement with the YMCA. She was condescended and even though her response to my question as to why my account is double charged her answer was sometimes it be like that. Pure ignorance. As I am in accounting I know I’m paid up but now being over charged and am being told Liz Moore is the final decision maker.I will get to the bottom of this and I’m sure my bank will refund me as I have the letter where the YMCA suspended care due to employee negligence! As well as not adhering to an agreement that I’m charged weekly! Not biweekly or monthly but weekly! I’m debating whether to contact a lawyer as I have my proof and this has happened now 4 times resulting in over draft fees etc

Gym is small and perfect if you don’t like an overcrowded gym. Plenty cardio equipment and basically everything you need from beginner lifters to advance. Only issue I have is bathrooms being locked after hours. People drink water and pre-workout during workouts so in natural someone has to use bathroom. Bathroom situation has to get better for after hours.

I signed up for beginning swim lessons one summer and PAID for them. I bought new equipment (suit, cap, goggles, etc) and showed up for the first lesson bright and early. They let me sign in and go change and get into the pool. I waited in the pool ALONE for 20mins and noone came. I changed and went back to the front desk and was told the class had been cancelled a couple weeks ago for that term because noone else signed up.....when was anyone going to tell me? They let me pay my money, show up, and EVEN SIGN IN, and told me nothing. Noone had contacted me beforehand. The person at the front desk didn't even apologize for the inconvenience. Noone did. Dont waste your time here.

I signed my daughter up for summer camp and was told all the weeks was available. I didn’t hear anything the first day of camp so I called and was told my daughter doesn’t have a spot for the first week and she also didn’t have a spot for 2 weeks in July. Now I have to figure out other childcare options for those weeks. The reason for me signing her up was because I have to work and I thought this place would be legit. This is the first and last time I will be using them for childcare. Y’all took my registration fee knowing y’all didn’t have all the weeks available, this is a big inconvenience and this is unacceptable.

At least give us a warning in advance just like you want us to give you a heads up if we have signed up to come and for whatever reason cant. I had a great experience when I went there to register. The front desk staff were very professional and helped guide me through all of the information I needed to know. As well as they let my 4 year old go play so she didn’t have to stand there through the registration process. This gave my daughter a chance to socialize with other children and understand she is going to have a fun time at this new place. Everything was clean and I was very pleased with everything in all.

The Portsmouth YMCA is one of the best YMCA’s in Hampton Roads. It is always clean and the staff are great! They have two indoor pools (an aqua therapy pool and a lap pool), a great closed-off free weight area, a decent cardio equipment section, an array of assisted machines, and basketball courts. They also have aquatic and fitness classes to accommodate everyone’s needs. And I must reiterate how clean the entire facility is. It is refreshing visiting the Portsmouth YMCA.

I enjoy working out at this location, the fitness center has everything I need. The Suna is outstanding they have both dry and steam! The staff is friendly but the atmosphere is somewhat unprofessional. The locker room are not keep very cleaned. When you notified personnel at the front desk about issue in the locker room, cleanliness, bugs, towel dispenser they never reply. They have to many young people working. Management needs to come out of the office!

I joined the Y about 3 or 4 months ago. My membership was 55.00 whopping dollars a month and i was ripped off. Upon my first visit the guy at the desk assumed that I was pregnant and asked for an emergency contact in case I went into labor which was very offensive. The Machinery is very old and out of date. The staff is not very friendly. And the first time I went in the pool I got sick. The next three or four times I went to work out the pool was always unavailable. I tried to cancel my membership gave them my notice and they continued to take the money out of my account. This is the worst gym I've ever been to in my life and I will never do business with them again. I went to one Life Fitness they are amazing very friendly.

Supervisor by the name of James was extremely vocal in his address towards my family that we are guest here from Taylor Bend YMCA. I love this ymca because it's smaller and cozy, not to mention nice and quiet. The machines are not really old imo, they're easy to figure out. I like how there's one little room devoted to the easier strength training machines, the whole layout is very nice and convenient. I'm in my late 20s but i so much appreciate the older crowd that comes to this gym, I'm just starting my workout journey so i don't really feel intimidated among them. Unlike other gyms that are filled with younger, super hot people who are probably judging me. But i digress...

The only thing keeping me from giving 5 stars is some of the people at the front desk. They don't really greet me, I'm ignored when i walk in until i talk first. No one asks how they can help me. I'm not gonna call out anyone specifically, but there is one person in particular who makes me feel like i don't belong there, they are very curt with me and won't look me in the eye, nor will this person smile at me even after i smile at them.

But i give the gym and atmosphere itself 5 stars all the way.

This ymca sucks I joined greenbrier ymca they where good. i started going to great bridge Y and they where great but this Ymca is less then a mile away from my new resident and it is out dated. You spray a paper towel with disinfect spray most ymca have wipes. Machines are old limited space in all areas except for gymnasium this is actually the best part of gym but the young boys hog that. I can say that the old people here seem to love it and it's cool to see them still getting it. if your old this is perfect y for you. They can't scan you in with cell phone app they have to touch my phone an manually enter it. Staff isn't as friendly as greenbrier or great bridge. The Taylor road Ymca is 3 times as far as this one but if I want a good work out with up to date machines this where I go this Y is more so if I just don't feel like going but it's so close I have no excuse to not go.
