Steve is one of the best in Hampton roads. He establishes a detailed plan to fit into your daily regimen. If you have any nagging past injuries or flare ups, he adjusts it quickly and efficiently. I started training with Steve Preston of Preston Strength in April 2024. I am 67 years old, so starting a workout program was a big step. Steve specializes in coaching people over 40 years old, although he trains people of all ages. The process starts with an in-person interview with Steve. Here he asks about your goals and evaluates your current fitness level; but most importantly, he finds out about any past and current injuries and designs a workout program tailored to each individual with a focus on minimizing the chance of injury or re-aggravating previous injuries..
Steve uses a holistic approach, focusing on the whole body and not just individual parts of the body. This is not a program where you go in and lift weights for an hour, trying to get ripped or get 6 pack abs. He focuses on core strength through a series of well-designed body weight exercises intended to increase overall body strength and fitness as well as improve flexibility and mobility, all while preventing injury. Weights are used for some exercises, mostly to amplify the effectiveness of the body weight exercises, but no bench press, lat pulldown or traditional workouts you see in a typical program. After every training session, my whole body feels well worked out, but I feel good, feel stronger and feel a real sense of accomplishment. Somehow he knows when to increase the level of difficulty and is able to get more out of me than I thought I was capable of.
Steve has an excellent app which lists each of your exercises for any particular workout. This app provides a video example of each exercise showing proper form as well as tracking your progress in real time. Prior to doing exercises, Steve demonstrates each exercise and while doing the exercises, he closely monitors to ensure the proper form is used to minimize injury.
When I first started, I was very apprehensive and had real doubts about whether I could do this or whether I would stick with it; but Steve encouraged me and assured me that we would start slow and work at a pace I was comfortable with. After only 2 months, I feel stronger than I have in years and have high confidence that I can achieve my goals and beyond. I attribute this to Steve’s motivational style which is very non-judgmental and uplifting. To top it all off, he makes it fun!

Preston Strength has played a pivotal role in enhancing my quality of life, emotional well-being and self-esteem. My strength, cardio fitness and posture have significantly improved, and my back and joints are no longer in constant pain. This has been the most effective solution for me in terms of weight loss, confidence, quality of life AND pain management.

I contacted Preston Strength following spine surgery and physical therapy because everything I had tried previously had aggravated my issues. I soon realized Steve possessed the knowledge and experience I desperately needed. I had tried other facilities and programs, but progress elsewhere was slow and limited, injuries inevitable, and the environments were often intimidating and not particularly supportive of, or conducive to, motivation and discipline. I needed professional coaching in a welcoming, cheerful and comfortable environment.

Steve provides just the right level of encouragement, support, motivation, accountability, education and inspiration, and tailors each client’s training to be safe, efficient and effective. So, despite my own set of limitations I have been able to stick with the program, train without pain, and lose fat while building muscle. Everything that is necessary to achieve the desired results.

Within weeks of beginning my training at Preston Strength I started to notice changes in my body composition. Within five months I had reached my goal weight and a whole-body transformation. The only changes to my diet were sensible eating and portion control, but nothing was off the menu, and I wasn’t hungry. To date, I have lost over 30lbs of body fat and simultaneously gained the necessary muscle my body needs to support my spine.

After some health issues and unexpected events adding considerable stress to everyday life, I put on quite a bit of weight. I have been out of shape before and know how to work out, but this was different. I kept injuring myself, I've developed breathing issues, my cholesterol was up, my left side had grown increasingly weak negatively affecting my balance, and my body was getting twisted which was hurting my ability to work. I wasn't out of shape; I was in bad shape. I had to humble myself and get help. I had some friends highly recommend Preston Strength. I started working with Steve in July. He has helped me change my life. While I see people of all ages and stages at the gym, Steve is adept with the needs of "middle-aged" clients and older. It hasn't been easy but he's helped me dig deep and find the strength in myself. I'm strong. My balance is better. My respiration has improved. I've dropped some weight (I own that it would be more weight if I followed the nutrition advice better). All my bloodwork is back to normal. I feel better and more confident. If you are on the fence, get off, do yourself a favor and just do it. Steve will guide you and he will do it without being in your personal space. You are investing in yourself. You will get out what you put in. Steve will help get you to your goals.

When I walked through the door for the first time to meet with Steve about my goals, I was a frustrated "over 45 and menopausal" woman looking to find something different than what I had spent years doing but found was no longer working for me physically. Wanting to focus more on strength and resistance training, but metabolic conditioning as well, I found that and more in coming to Steve's gym for the past year. Very kind, funny, and sincere, Steve is a great resource for various exercises and programs that fit your goals, whether you're in peak physical fitness, dealing with an injury, or just experiencing normal aches and pains of getting older. I may have said once or twice (or three times) that I just wasn't feeling it that particular day and Steve, each time, offered up understanding and empathy. Then we'd laugh about something going on and I'm back at it and on to the next part of my workout. He knows when to say, "Hey...you can lift more there..." or "Let's try something else today..."

In addition, the other members who attend the same days/times (6:00ish a.m. crew on MWF) as I do are friendly and supportive and just all around great. It's not unusual for all of us to start talking and laughing about something while we're working out. The sense of community and friendship from the get-go has been really nice to experience.

We all hear about the benefits of working out and the positive impact it has on our mind body and soul. Take all those benefits and then multiply them by 100 times and that’s what you get from Preston Strength. He walks the walk and talks the talk.

So here's the deal: Before I met Steve, every exercise program I ever tried, every attempt to make myself stronger, every attempt to build my endurance, and every gym program universally and ultimately resulted in frustration, failure, and injury.

Recently I have been learning thing from Steve about proper form, time under tension, and how to build my strength and endurance without injury. Woo hoooo!!!!

Do yourself a favor: Find a personal trainer (1) who knows what they're doing, (2) has the experience and knowledge, and (3) cares more about your success than even YOU do. If you're close enough to Chesapeake VA, contract with Steve for his personal attention. If you're not close enough for his hands on, in-person training, ask him about the possibilities, and pros & cons for his online, distance options!
