Jackie, who met us at the front reception was awesome. She was friendly and helpful. I am a head lifeguard for our city pools in Fort Collins, Colorado. My wife and I are swimmers and have swum in pools around the world. This was one of our favorite experiences; to swim outdoors in early November in a 50-meter pool divided into 20, 25-yard lanes. The pool was clean, the locker rooms were clean and the showers was warm. The Princess Anne Fanily YMCA was a memorable swimming experience. Our son is in the Navy nearby so we'll be back.

Never any lifeguards for indoor pool, and terrible customer service at the front desk. Really had higher expectations, why are we paying so much for membership if we can’t have accessibility to what we got the membership for? They don’t update their website and we waste a whole trip to find out they are closed for no life guards.

I would not suggest to sign your child up for any sports! I signed my daughter up for flag football 4/26, the class was to start 6/3, drove 30 mins just to find out when I got there no one was there for flag football! The lady asked did I get any information or an email I told her the Y NEVER sent any additional information after I paid for the class on 4/26 she apologized for that and I was told I would receive a call from Caesar the manager explaining what’s going on that day, never got a call I had to call him myself on 6/9. When he called me back I was told there weren’t enough kids who signed up so that’s why flag football wasn’t going on NO APOLOGY or anything how would I as a parent know that information??!! He asked if I wanted a credit on the account and to call back for July to see if enough kids sign up, I told him I didn’t want to do that and be in the same situation so I would like a refund, here it is 6/24 I still haven’t received a refund yet! My money shouldn’t have been held this long regardless when the Y noticed there weren’t enough kids signed up for the class to begin with!!

Third year in a row to have issues in the summer with this facility
Today, my only day off wanted to take my kids to the indoor pool that supposed to be open.
I was told it’s closed and wasn’t given any reason why beside an email to the aquatic director.
Pool summer horror stories with this facility is endless

07/22/24
It seems that every year I encounter a new issue at this place.

Iam a member for the last 10years
Today is 07/22/24 @5pm
My kids are being discriminated against at the princesse Anne location
My son who’s 5 weeks from being 5 years old could not access the interactive zone with his sister while there are way younger kid that just went in as I’m watching no questions asked
WHY ??????
Is there any members with more previlage than others is it just our last name and the way we look.
I will need an explanation

I booked swim lessons for my child at this YMCA for a program containing four sessions. The first week was cancelled due to pool maintenance, which is entirely avoidable as they should be planning their programming around this. The third week was cancelled via email at 9 PM the evening prior and calls were made less than 30 minutes before the program start time the morning of. At this point, I have been informed by other parents that they received an email explaining that a full refund would be processed due to the program not meeting YMCA standards. I did not receive said email. The fourth week was not cancelled at that time. The fourth week was cancelled day of with notice made only to members. When asking for more information the receptionist was quite rude. I went out on a limb booking programming through the YMCA since I am not a member and I will never again. Avoid this YMCA if you want to get value out of the programs you are paying for.

The stair machines are old and broken. The elliptical machines are also old. The pool never has set open lap swim hours and the TIDES practice always takes all of the lanes. Very disappointed and might go to another gym due to lack of transparency of the lap swim hours.

My children were on a basketball team. They were kicked from the Y due to the parents and coaches stating that they were too “advanced” yet they had only played 2 years. My children and their team were mistreated by other parents, refs, and staff because of how well they played opposed to the other team. The outcome from all of this is that their team was kicked out of the y and made to travel to only a Norfolk League or forced to get their money back. I’m disappointed in the Y because this was a place where my children felt comfortable with themselves. Not so much anymore. This is pure discrimination.

Great facility but the lifeguards at the pool sometimes do not turn on the slides when they’re supposed to during free swim. When there is no aquatic classes they are supposed to turn on the slides during free swim. If you want the slides on you have to ask them and sometimes they refuse. We complained so hopefully the issue gets resolved.

I’m a Sentara neurotherapy patient and I was recently paralyzed from the waist down during a medical procedure. This facility is equipped to lower me into the pool, has a fully functional pool wheelchair, walker, all the necessary flotation devices, AND allows Sentara therapists to work with me and conduct hour long therapy sessions in the pool. I’ve made so much improvement and am gaining more and more function back every day because of this. As if that wasn’t enough, the facility is always spotless, well stocked and staffed with the friendliest and helpful people you could ever ask for.

As a side note: I’m also glad that they allow church services there as well, even though I’m not a member of that church. I have my own church family with New Heights Fellowship but it warms my heart to know that God’s love is shared in that building.

My wife and I continue to sign up for classes/events on the website and CONTINUE to face cancellations. We even called ahead for the latest author meet up event at Princess Anne location and was told that it was NOT CANCELED.

Lo and behold we get there, canceled. We are getting extremely tired of this.
Be very wary of signing up for things for the Y, apparently the website is independent of the locations; with things being done locally and not honoring the site.

Don’t bother to sign up for any activities for kids at ymca. I signed up for four things for my kids at different locations. Every single one of them was a cancellation at last minute when we came to the door. No prior email or call or anything prior to the time of the event. I even called 30min ahead of event and was told the event would be happening. Then when we arrived, we were told “oh that’s just props from the call center. The event is cancelled.” No apologies and no remedial actions offered to prevent this from happening again. Extremely unprofessional. I’d give a zero if I could.

What’s the point of an indoor pool if it gets shut down for bad weather? This is the best and largest YMCA in the area, but it still basically forces you to get the 24hr access due to the short daily hours, and It turns into a teenager hangout after hours.

The kid zone and child care for 5+ is disappointing now. They used the have a huge I-zone that was so much fun for my kids. They’d leave dripping in sweat. Then, they turned it into an after school child care room. The area they have now is a tiny space with the babies. They can pretty much color or play video games…neither being exercise. My kids looooved going when they had activities for kids and a space for the older kids. Now, I can’t get them to go. The gym is never open to play basketball, if school is out. So if you’re a member, your kids over 5 have nothing to do. Also, I tried to make the best of it and use the indoor pool…even that is not child friendly. They won’t turn on the water slide or splash pad. Y has always been family friendly and it just isn’t that anymore. If you pay separately for after school childcare, then they can use the basketball court and large play room. We got a membership to rec center so our kids could play there. Cheaper and more stuff for the older kids. The gym, fitness classes, and instructors are great. It’s great for adults and infants.

This is the Dark Knight.
I am telling you that this is the best and cleanest Y in the area. If you choose any other Y, you're WRONG. Updated equipment, plenty of space, clean bathrooms, tons of sanitation wiping dispensers, and nice staff. I miss Sara, but the others have stepped up in their service to fill the void. I have visited 7 other Ys in Hampton Roads for comparison. Mostly everyone wipes the equipment down except for this one Hispanic guy with a hoodie and his son that NEVER do, so I wipe after them whenever I see it. Other locations have too many non-wipers. Come here for the classes, staff, working equipment, cleaniness and atmosphere. Nationwide- only Y I found better is located in Oxnard, CA. LOVE IT HERE

SAFETY:
The last few times I went to the gym I had to do the sweeping myself. There was candy and wrappers and just random things left all over the gym floor. I am a paying customer and decided to clean, so that my son and anyone else playing basketball doesn’t turn an ankle or something worse. Additionally, the floor has been re finished and it is so tacky I can’t even sweep it anymore. A hot swab every night should be done in order to preserve the finish, but I know that isn’t going to be accomplished because just sweeping up must require too much effort. This is a SAFETY concern.

I pay for “24 hour access” and yet this location does not seem to understand what “24 hours” means. Putting a sign outside saying “no access permitted” for whatever reason, negates the validity of “24 hour access”. They need to choose between the customers who pay for 24 hours, and those who rent the facility for other reasons. With the current business model, they are “double dipping”. This is a textbook example of false advertising, especially since they don’t tell you about this when you sign up. I also don’t see why this is necessary, since the group who rents the faculty for “assembly” reasons, is certainly not using the weights and fitness machines. There is no reason to lock us out.

I'm giving this YMCA 5 Stars based on the facilities, employees, and the professionalism and care by the managers that handled the incident of harassment by the church group members towards my wife when she went to work out on Sunday. I still thinks it's worth mentioning that this isn't an isolated incident and I hope it gets corrected, because the YMCA I know does not support that kind of behavior and discrimination.

I go here because they have nice equipment. I've been a member for roughly 2 years and the last year of that membership I've dealt with some of the rudest most arrogant staff I've had at any gym, even management seems to think they're doing you a favor. Occasionally I'll have a kind respectful employee but 7/10 times they act like theyre doing you a favor. If you're looking for a gym to build friendships and relationships at keep looking but if you can look past the rude staff then you've found a great place to lose weight

Not a friendly family center. I have been a member for a year. The head trainer Cathy, has been out of her office 10 times all together since I have been there. I have seen kids run a muck, playing on equipment and no parent supervision. The day I take my son, which I am a certified personal trainer through NASM, she comes out and explains to me I cannot have my son there. This fitness center does not care about your health and well being or your children's health. I have canceled my membership and will be blacklisting this gym from Military members.

We attended a dual outdoor swim meet this weekend (November 7/8) and were told on Sunday the building was not open for restroom use. The building had multiple facilities that could have been open to limit close proximity. All families and swimmers totaling over 100 people were limited to use the single person restrooms on the pool deck with no attendants available to clean the facility. We were screened upon entering the pool deck, but this was absolutely unnecessary and not safe during the current COVID-19 situation. Unfortunately the host team got the brunt of the blow and had to monitor restroom use, it was disappointing that the YMCA didn’t accommodate for the amount of families that were in attendance for this sporting event.

Friendly staff. The location is nice, but sometimes the family restrooms aren't kept up very well (some showers barely work). The gym is nice. My son was part of the after school program and enjoyed it. Unfortunately we didn't find they were working with our son on his homework. We decided to switch to Joonbi Taekwondo.

My only other complaint would be with their swim lesson program. Whenever they cancel a class, they give you a $5 voucher to sing up for another swim class on the last day of class. It would be nice if they either credited or refunded the money instead of forcing you to sign up again!

This facility is not about improving or maintaining its equipment. The weight lifting equipment is always out of order, cable machine wires are fraying all over, and they drag due to the lack of maintenance. This facility has been told bu myself and others many of times, but rather than improve or maintain the equipment, they put it off until it breaks. This facility is not ideal for those attempting to lift heavy weights.

This facility needs better up to date equipment.

Plus there is three different size carabiners and not enough for every machine.

Seems like every time I come one or more of the machines appears to not work or lacks maintenance. Today the hid sled is not working properly. When i first started here all the machines were maintained and lubricated. Now everything lately has been slowly falling apart and is degrading. With the money people spend here you would figure they would reinvest in the weight lifting equipment and not just the aerobics stuff. Have the aerobic machines are always empty anyways.

Hip sled up one day down the next with a sign of OUT OF ORDER. The next day its back in order and still broke the same as the day prior to it going out of order.

Like they always say the staff is a direct representation of the management and the gym itself.

I can tell you not all YMCAs are like this. The saratoga Springs one was amazing and up to date.

If you want to build muscle and lift weights this isnt the gym for you. Lack of equipment, variety of machines, and machines that are in working order are not here.

I went to check this place out and consider beginning a membership and the first impression was good. Everything seemed good quality and in order. All the machines in the gym are electronic. While an employee was showing me the gym, she told me that there are 3 complimentsry orientation lessons with the membership (that are kind of essential being everything is electronic, plus you need to put your info in a kiosk to give you an exercise plan or something like that). I'm the type of person that asks many questions to make sure that I don't waste my time, so I asked if I had to make an appointment for those lessons or if I could just walk in the first day and ask the person at the desk to assist me. She told me I could just walk in and ask the person at the desk. Well a week later I went to start the free week and the first day was enough to never go back again. After I lost a good 30 minutes signing up, I went in the gym and waited a few minutes to be able to talk to someone, while waiting at the empty desk. Finally someone asked what I need and I explain that I'm new and need the orientation lesson, I also said that I was told I could just ask and have someone available to give me this lesson. Her answer was just "do you want to schedule it?" I said, can't I do it now? And she again, do you want to schedule it? With no explanation or apology for the miscommunication they have between employees. Quickly the conversation became an argument and the employee doesn't apologize once, she insisted with cold blood that I have to schedule the lesson because she is busy and implying she can't lose time with me. She gets angry at me for being upset that I went there and lost hours for their mistakes and said if I had something to say I would have to go to her supervisor which I did it and the supervisor was super nice and professional. That employee at the desk was definitely unprofessional, unapologetic and rude that made me quickly reevaluate my willingness to be part of that environment. There was no way for me to start doing anything that day without anyone explaining to me how to use the machines or any type of orientation. So I started the free week and immediately started losing days and lost at least 3 important hours of my day with nothing to show. I immediately went to the Rec Center and they were more than friendly and professional, 1/3 of the price and the machines are all new, actually this October they are replacing them all again. Now I'm a member at the Rec Center and happy to save money and be in a great friendly place.

Attended a swim meet at the facility. Decent overall with plenty of parking and helpful staff. Plus they had free coffee in the lounge. Which was good since I had to be there by 6:50AM for three days straight. Outdoor pool is good, plus it had chillers for the swimmers. Important when the pool temps could spike due to the hot weather. Recommend.

The Princess Anne Family YMCA of Virginia Beach, Virginia is a great YMCA that gave me a great workout experience, and exceeded my expectations. Here's why I liked the Princess Anne Family YMCA:

Princess Anne Family YMCA has such a large variety of equipment for whatever type of exercise you might be looking for. For example it doesn't matter if you're into cardio, weightlifting, swimming, spinning, running, or cross-fit because there's something for everyone. Not only does the Princess Anne Family YMCA have a variety of equipment, but it's also the newest equipment on the market. This is not only the latest and greatest equipment, but it's also laid out perfectly throughout the Princess Anne Family YMCA. I have been to several other YMCAs, but none compare to the Princess Anne Family YMCA. No other training facilities or gyms can compete with the Princess Anne Family YMCAs equipment, equipment cleanliness, employee professionalism, facility cleanliness, or overall facility as a whole.

Also all employees at the Princess Anne Family YMCA are prompt, professional, courteous, and tactful. Every employee at Princess Anne Family YMCA went above and beyond for me. Princess Anne Family YMCA of Virginia Beach has a welcoming atmosphere that leaves the customer wanting to come back time and time again.

The overall cleanliness of the Princess Anne Family YMCA is above average from other YMCAs I have been to as well.

Finally, the Princess Anne Family YMCA is easy to find, and also has accessible parking.

Excellent place to get in shape the water classes are great for those of us who have sustained back injuries using the water helps with the stress and it's much easier to walk taking the aquatic aerobics class is also a great way to workout without over stressing the body. And a slow walk on the treadmill is helpful it's a bit pricey especially if you're Retired but in the end you'll get excellent service and classes taught by certified instructors. So if you looking to shape up or just keep your mobility the Y is the place that can help with that.

It is still expensive even with Open Doors....there isn't an option to pause your membership with no penalties and then you apparently need to go in face to face to cancel it. Plus, if you can't afford it, you will still owe on that month forever...so hard for people on limited income just trying to excercise at a place that offers childcare during that time. This location just needs better staff training and more flexibility on payment options. All members need to be treated with respect, no matter how much money they make. On a side note, I didn't notice a bunch of teenagers just aimlessly wondering the halls here like at the rec.

My most memorable part of our visit, was the childcare staff letting me take my boys to the play area outside. This is one of my favorite YMCA in my area. They have a indoor splash village with slides and a pool for little kids to play in. It’s a great place for kids to have fun splashing around the pool. I don’t really exercise so I don’t know much about the exercise equipment. This YMCA is a very nice place for kids and adults.

Very friendly staff. The facility is generally very well maintained. The child care is great - your Y membership allows for 2 hours of free childcare per day. There is a nursing room for breastfeeding mothers; however, many members use this as a change room for the pool so when you go to use it there are people in it, then when they leave the nursing chair is wet. There is usually free coffee and tea in the lobby.

This Y is so awesome. Their fitness center is like no other.bthrre pool is a walk in like at the beach without the sand. They also have a walking track in the pool. I used it and it was a great workout. I highly recommend it.
