Came in for a trial class a while back - having not done Muay Thai in a while but a couple years of training. These guys definitely know what they're doing. If i didn't live so far I'd 100% train here - hopefully get to come back and train again in the future

Moved to Norfolk from San Diego and was looking for a muay thai gym to continue training at. This place had great reviews so I was excited to check it out but unfortunately, HOMT left me disappointed.

Customer service over the phone was already subpar but I didn’t want to let that define my experience. I arrived to class 15 minutes early so I could sign any waivers, warm up, and get a feel for the space. It is a very small space, which isnt a knock to them, but with a class actively happening and everyones stuff stowed in the front, it left virtually no space to warm up. There was no one at the front desk this entire time. I sat for 15 minutes watching the class, multiple times the instructor would come within feet of me and look in my direction but not so much as smile or say hello.

When the previous class ended, the mats were very sweaty and were very haphazardly cleaned between classes. Poorly cleaned floors indicates poorly cleaned gear to me and an easy way to get a case of ringworm.

Class started with a round of shadow boxing to warmup. A rather insufficient warmup (no jumprope, no stretching..) but a warmup nonetheless. Unfortunately I was unable to warmup because this is when the front desk lady emerged, sweaty from just taking the previous class, to tell me I needed to fill out a waiver. Very convenient for me to have arrived 15 minutes early to mitigate this and instead have it cut into my class time/warmup.

Class itself was ok. Aside from the instructor never introducing himself, which should be standard with new members, he did come around and give individual feedback. There was no music playing during the class which detracted from the fun and intensity of training. I barely broke a sweat. Another man taking class interjected my partner & I intermittently with feedback, this was apparently the owner but he, too, never introduced himself. When class was over no one asked about my experience or gave any sort of sales pitch. We were rushed out so the next class could begin. I left feeling very disappointed.

I came from Victory MMA, Jockos gym, in San Diego, so I know I am a bit spoiled in my experience but you don’t need a sprawling facility to have good customer service, professional staff, cleanliness, and a sense of community. If anything, you would think a hole in the wall place would do a better job with those things. Maybe if you’re a total beginner with no experience to compare things to, this place will be fine but I couldn’t recommend it or see myself returning.

This is without a doubt in my mind, not only the best Muay Thai gym but the best martial arts gym in the area. The instructors are incredibly knowledgeable and noticeably passionate about their profession. Whether you intend to be a competitive fighter or just want to lose the beer gut, I cannot recommend this gym enough.

I highly recommend this gym. I had the opportunity of training at this gym for what turned out to be 7 months. I was recovering from a surgery that prevented me training BJJ, which was my pre-surgery hobby and primary interest. I initially thought I would train Muay Thai at HOMT for a couple of months until my recovery reached the point where I could start rolling on the mats again for BJJ. However, after the first week of training Muay Thai I fell in love with it and stuck with it throughout my recovery. I attribute my enjoyment of Muay Thai to the coaches: Octavian, Landon, Romi, Larue, Jackson, Jeremy, Shamar, and of course head coach Jake, who has instilled a positive learning environment and competitive culture in his gym. All the coaches have the skills, credibility, and care to deliver first-rate instruction and ensure students comprehend the techniques. I am only leaving the gym because I have to move, and it will be the main thing I miss the most about Norfolk. -Felix

I went to my first class here about 3 weeks ago now. I did my intro with Coach Kayla, and then rolled into a fitness kickboxing class. I had such a great experience I signed up for the year, and have been going 4 days a week. Not only are the coaches awesome, but all the members are extremely welcoming and super helpful. I’ve been searching for a gym/ workout that I can stick to for so many years now, and I’m so glad to say I found my routine at The House.

Very impressed with the instructors and what is taught here. My son has been training here for a year now. Even early on after being there a couple months I saw him get better at his training but most importantly his self confidence. There is more than just self defense and striking taught at the children classes. Respect, Honor, and discipline is tied in on a daily basis. I would recommend this to any parent. The team here is remarkable. They also have adult classes.

I went here like 2 years ago and I'm not sure where my comment went but I guess I should repost.

Pros)
1-The owner seems enthusiastic and nice
2-Its a great workout
3-There are lots of available times to go
4-Space is kept clean and you can rent or buy the boxing gloves which are sold there

Cons)
1- Although the owner was nice the rest of his staff seem negligent ( When he was not the teacher no one corrected my form or even checked up on my group at all. His time was spent flirting with a cute new girl)

2- I never got a member card ( I signed up for a year and was told I would get one in 1-2 weeks. I asked every time I went and did not receive one for an entire year. It just made me feel isolated and unaccepted)

3- There is no drop in rate. ( I usually will go to a place a couple times before signing up for months at a time. The smallest amount you could sign up for is a month and it was pretty pricy. I just feel like something is wrong if you require your members to sign up for at least a month after 1 class)

4-The class was repetitive. ( I know repetition is key in honing these martial arts skills, but it just seemed like there was no variation in any class. i.e. It got old quick

Honestly I probably still would have stayed if the rest of the staff was as nice as the owner. I just couldn't go back when:

1-They were not consistently correcting my form( I went there to learn Muay Thai not punch/ kick a bag for an hour.)

2- I was blatantly being ignored on multiple occasions. (I didn't even get a hello how are you from some of the staff)

3- I don't like doing this, but I am black and there are very few minorities in any of the classes.

So, if you want to just punch and kick a punching bag and not really learn anything join this community, but only if your a cute blond.

Absolutely love this place, I've always wanted to learn Muay Thai and BJJ and they got it both with top notch instructors. If you work most of the day they have classes from 5 all the way to 930 and they rotate the hours for Muay Thai and BJJ to really accommodate to everyone. If you are worried about cleanliness during these turbulent times there's no need. They get things very clean and sanitized after every class.

If you are looking for detailed instructions and techniques to either sport or just want to get a good workout with their fitness kickboxing this is a great place, especially if you are completely new to the martial art world.
